Broadbent Vinho Verde — The Summer Wine of Portugal

 Broadbent Vinho Verde

The Summer is moving along and as our casual get-togethers seem to happen more and more, you need a wine that's perfect for both the weather and your menu. One of our favorite wines for the season is Vinho Verde — the delicious white wine from Portugal tailor-made for summer weather.

The most important thing to know is that Vinho Verde is not a grape, but a region in northern Portugal. While there are several origin stories behind its name, the most common is that Vinho Verde translates as "Green Wine" as it is harvested early and meant to be drunk young. As a matter of fact, it can be so young that it is not unusual for many Vinho Verde to not have a vintage to them.

All this brings us to our wine of the week, the Broadbent Vinho Verde ($9.99). Winemaker Bartholomew Broadbent has created a blend of indigenous grapes — Loureiro, Trajadura, & Pedernã — to make this fabulous wine. The soils of this region are acid-rich and granite-based with areas of slate and clay. This, combined with the gentle slopes of the region, produces a wine that is beautifully fresh with flavors of tart green apple, white peach, and melon. Deliciously crisp with a zesty finish, this wine enjoys a slight effervescence (also a common characteristic of this wine) which makes it very enjoyable on a summer afternoon. This wine also boasts a modest 9% alcohol content which makes it all the more perfect for backyard enjoyment. As for food pairings, all over Portugal, seafood is the dominant cuisine, particularly meaty white fish. So if you visit the fish market and see monkfish, sea bass or even some fresh cod, don't pass up the chance to pair it with this wine. Even many basic shrimp salad recipes will be a perfect pairing for this every-day wine of Portugal.

You can find this wine right on our Home Page as it is one of our Cellar Special for July.

Fire up the Grill for Grgich Hills

2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay

Summertime means patio time, and time to fire up the grill and make the best of these summer evenings. As you put together your menu for the grill, don't forget to think about the wine you want to pair with your meals and if you are thinking about Napa, Francos Wine Merchants has two great choices for you.

Miljenjo "Mike" Grgich founded his namesake winery in 1977 after winning the 1976 Paris Tasting when he was winemaker for Chateau Montelena. Jumping to the present day, Mike, along with his daughter Violet and his nephew Ivo Jeramaz, is committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability. He farms his estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, and relies on wild yeast fermentation to handcraft food-friendly wines that are balanced and elegant. All his wines are 100% Certified Organic and 100% Estate grown.

Starting off, we have with their 2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay ($38.99) as one of their star players. Their Chardonnay vines grow in their American Canyon and Carneros vineyards in the southern tip of Napa Valley, near San Pablo Bay. The cool maritime breezes and morning fog allow the grapes to slowly ripen, producing complex flavors and a natural acidity that is impossible to achieve in warmer climates. The wine displays ripe peach, mango and tropical flavors. A note of minerality means this wine can be enjoyed with fresh seafood as well as chicken and grilled pork.

2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

If the butcher case with its selection of Ribeyes and T-Bone steaks is calling you, then you want to consider the 2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.99). Made with a blend of grapes from both their Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards, this prize-winning Cabernet Sauvignon greets you with a garnet/black color and aromas of dried cassis, cranberry and spiced plums. Full-bodied with chewy tannins, this wine enjoys a moderate oak flavor and a bit of acid to spare. Their organic farming methods very much allow you to enjoy the true essence of the vineyard sites.

Francos Wine Minute — if you have 60 seconds spare, check out this week's installment of our Wine Minute as we talk about the 2019 La Val Albariño ($14.99). You can find our Wine Minute on our Home Page.

The Village of Saint-Véran

2019 Domaine Chagnoleau Saint Veran "Prelude"

It's the small producers that make Burgundy such an interesting region and the village of Saint-Veran is home to many of them. Francos Wine Merchants recently received shipment of a superb white Burgundy that is not only perfect for your summer menu but also a great value.

Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau is a small estate in the heart of the Mâconnais run by talented wine-makers Frantz Chagnouleau and his wife Caroline Gon. Caroline worked in both Napa Valley and Burgundy and Frantz has a degree in Oenology and worked for Olivier Merlin, also in Burgundy.

This duo is one of the most talented in Burgundy and have earned their reputation by farming the old fashioned way. This means among other things the use of hand-pruning, hand-picking, and indigenous yeast. Harvest is done by a plot by plot basis allowing each vine to achieve the appropriate balance of sugar and acidity before being picked.

All this brings us to our feature wine, the 2019 Domaine Chagnoleau Saint Véran "Prélude" ($29.99). The vines that make up this Burgundian white wine are at least 50 years in age and produce a wine that is well balanced and brimming with flavor. The palate treats you to nuances of peach and grapefruit on the entry with an underlying notes of apricot towards the finish. Wines from the Mâcon, particularly from the village of Saint-Véran, are among the driest in Burgundy a perfect complement to your summer menus. The sharp price of $29.99 makes the 2019 Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau Saint-Véran "Prélude" quite the bargain for a Burgundian wine of this quality.

Wines for Your 4th of July

2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2018 William Fevre Saint Bris

The 4th of July is the high point of summer and whether you are packing up the car and traveling to the beach or only going as far as your backyard, Francos Wine Merchants has some perfect wine choices for any destination.

If you are planning to celebrate your 4th of July with seafood or shellfish, then you want to look towards producer William Fevre. Their 2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($26.99) always makes for a classic pairing. Delivering a nose of mineral and green apples along with flinty flavors of wet stone makes this a perfect selection for seafood with a briny quality. If you prefer the crisp quality of Sauvignon Blanc, consider their 2018 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99). The small village of Saint-Bris is the only white Burgundy AOC made from Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh and round on the palate, this wine has an exquisite lightness which makes it the ideal wine for your grilled fish, oysters or a simple charcuterie board.

2017 Rombauer Merlot 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

If your plans for the 4th are to throw a steak on the grill the 2017 Rombauer Merlot ($33.99) enjoys a deep ruby color and aromas of cedar and blackberry and solid framework of plum and blueberry. If you are thinking about some burgers then the ideal choice is the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99). This wine is made from 100% Gamay grape which has the structure you are looking for when pairing with red meat, but the mouthfeel has an easy-drinking medium weight to it. The other benefit of choosing Gamay grape for a summer day is that if the weather gets to the hot and humid side, you can put a slight chill on this red wine (20 or 30 minutes in the fridge should do it) which allows you to enjoy this wine without muting the true flavor of the Gamay grape.

Francos Wine Minute — If you have 60 seconds to spare, tune into this week's Wine Minute as we highlight a delicious White Burgundy, the 2019 Domaine Chagnoleau Saint Véran "Prélude" ($29.99). You can view the Francos Wine Minute on our Home Page.

2020 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle

2020 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

The warm days of summer beckon wines that elevate our summer menus while offering a respite from the warm evenings; enter the wines of Provence, specifically Rosé.

The market offers many choices when it comes to Rosé, but today we are starting with the classic from the Estate of Domaines Ott. The roots of this historic estate go back to 1896 when Marcel Ott traveled to Provence and purchased several estates with the determination to create great Provencal wines from noble grape varieties. Today, 120 years later, cousins Christian and Jean Francois Ott carry on the family tradition dedicating their life to their ancestor's love for the land.

Today we are going to focus on a wine from one particular property, the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($55.99). This estate was acquired by Marcel Ott in 1912 and the soil is a mix of gypsum, red clay, dolomite and sandstone all in gravel and stone. The estate enjoys a microclimate of mild winters, early springs and warm, dry summers with plenty of sunshine. The growing conditions combined with the various grape varieties are what bring the magic to this highly rated Rosé. It is the Grenache grape which provides this wine its exquisite pale pink color; Cinsault gives the wine its delicate softness and Syrah and Mouvedre usher in the expressive fruit flavor. Whether you are packing up for some time at the shore, heading to the park for a summer concert, or simply enjoying a night in the back yard, the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($55.99) is the wine that will add summertime magic to the most humble of evenings.

You can hear more about the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($55.99) in the Francos Wine Minute, as well as view our entire selection of Rosés by clicking on the Refreshing Summer Rosé link, both located on our Home Page.

2019 La Val Albariño — Break into Summer

2019 La Val Albarino

The first heatwave of the season is upon us, and while we will certainly get back to more seasonable temperatures, it does serve as a reminder of wines you will want to have on hand for those hot summer days. One such wine is the Spanish Albariño, which is a white wine grape perfect for both the summer weather and your summer menus, and today we have an old favorite that has made its return.

Traveling to Northwest Spain you will find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas that is home to many vineyards and wines, but most famously, Albariño. The 2019 La Val Albariño ($14.99) is one of the prize wines from Bodegas La Val. Established in 1985, Bodegas La Val produces its wines solely from their estate grown grapes. Winemaker Jose Maria Ureta keeps a careful eye on the 150 acres of Albariño in this typically very humid and rainy climate; hence the use of the pergola system which elevates the grape clusters, allowing more sun for ripening and also allowing air to circulate underneath the vines. Albariño is a thick-skinned grape which allows it to grow and prosper in this damp, maritime climate. The result of all this is a wine that shows aromas of lemon, melon and apple along with fresh green herbs. In the mouth this wine is fresh and zesty with notes of citrus and a touch of refreshing minerality followed by a long, clean, racy finish. As the warmer days approach, this wine will pair perfectly with almost any sword or white fish as well as a simple cold pasta salad with a lemon dressing. This wine would also be a good pairing for your favorite fish taco recipe or even some sea bass right off the grill.

So, as the summer gets into full swing and our tastes turn to wines that are refreshing with a clean, racy finish, look no further than 2019 La Val Albariño ($14.99) which can be found on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

2019 Caymus Cabernet — Elevate your Memorial Day

2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Memorial Day Weekend is here and the unofficial kickoff of summer has started. Francos Wine Merchants has plenty of ways to help you celebrate the long weekend and at the top of the list is the Star of Napa Valley from the Wagner family.

The Wagner family needs no introduction; their long, rich history of grape growing and winemaking precedes them. For 47 years the Wagner Family has been producing astounding wine from this estate and they honor their craft with every vintage. The 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) boasts a traditional elegance unique even among Napa Cabernets. Filled with layers of lush, rich, dark fruit, these flavors frame a full-bodied core that is classic Napa. The Wagner family practices a technique called "hang time" where they let the fruit "hang" on the vine unusually long to develop the suppleness and mature tannins for which Caymus is known. The 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) is the wine you want for the casual get-togethers we are able to enjoy this year, not to mention the perfect wine to pair with the NY Strips, Tomahawk or Ribeye steaks you'll be grilling up this weekend.

2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2018 William Fevre Saint Bris 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

For those of you doing seafood this weekend, we have two great choices from William Fevre. The 2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($26.99) is where you want to be if you are in the mood for a French Chardonnay with a crisp, mineral style and notes of green apple and wet stone. If Sauvignon Blanc grape is more your style, we recommend their 2018 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99) with its fresh, intense, bright bouquet and notes of exotic fruit. Either one of these white wines will pair perfectly with your grilled fish, seafood and oyster recipes as well as with a simple charcuterie board. If you are thinking grilled chicken of any type, you can move over to California where you will find the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99).

Whatever your needs are for the weekend, Francos will be at the ready to help you with your choices. Please check below for our Holiday hours.

Wines from the Honig Family

2019 Honig Sauvignon Blanc

Acquaint yourself with Honig Vineyard & Winery, a family operation in Rutherford, California in the heart of Napa Valley. If there is one thing Francos Wine Merchants enjoys, it's highlighting and supporting another family enterprise and today we are pleased to bring you this exceptional family business.

In 1964 Louis Honig purchased 68 acres in Rutherford with dreams of a family run winery. He planted the vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Louis worked establishing the vineyard while holding down his advertising job in San Francisco. Eventually he passed the baton down to his grandson Michael Honig who continued his grandfather's vision. He was soon joined by other family members and elevated the operation to focus on sustainable farming and solar power. The hard work and dedication has paid off and today they have fulfilled Louis Honig's dream of running a socially responsible family business.

Today we present two of their prized wines from the Honig Portfolio. First we have the 2019 Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($18.99). This wine is 96% Sauvignon Blanc grape with the balance being Semillion and Muscat grapes. Bright and fresh, this wine greats you with aromas of lemon and white grapefruit. The body is medium weight with a crisp and lengthy finish, perfect for most herb chicken recipes, scallops or a creamy mushroom risotto.

2017 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2017 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99) is the perfect rich, opulent wine that one looks for when your outdoor grill is beckoning you to bring home that delicious Ribeye steak. The dark purple color ushers in flavors of crushed blackberries, black currant and a hint of charcoal. The palate is full-bodied, firm and enjoys a core of solid, Napa fruit. This wine is an absolute pleasure right to the savory finish.

You can find both the 2019 Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($18.99) and the 2017 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99) on the Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link. You can also hear about this wine in this week's edition of the Francos Wine Minute which can also be found on our Home Page.

2018 Vietti Barbera D'Asti — Nuance of Northern Italy

2018 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne

This week our Italian tour bring us up north to Piedmont, a region of Italy bordering France and Switzerland. Sitting at the foot of the Alps, Piedmont is true to the meaning of its name, foot of the mountain. Piedmont is known for their sophisticated cuisine and of course their wines.

The Vietti family has been making fine wine in Piedmont since 1919, and four generations later the winery has earned a reputation for excellence in quality and dedication to craftsmanship, and is universally recognized today as being one of the very finest Italian wine labels. The Vietti artistry is evident in their organic farming methods as well as in every bottle the estate produces.

The 2018 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne ($16.99) is one of the wine produced by winemaker Luca Currado Vietti. This vibrant and youthful red wine displays pretty notes of ripe red cherry, as well as subtle mineral qualities. Medium-bodied and well rounded, it culminates in a long, easy finish. Barbera is an especially food-friendly wine that brilliantly complements a variety of recipes. You can keep it simple and serve it with a simple grilled chicken, or dive deep into the Piedmontese culinary delights and try some gnocci in a tomato/cream sauce or a traditional Panissa Vercellese which is a risotto from the Vercelli area that actually uses Barbera wine as one of its ingredients.

Masseria Li Veli Verdeca — Puglia Pleaser

2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Spring is the perfect time to visit Italy. The menus of Italy abound with spring vegetables and each region of Italy has its own wines with which to pair. One of those regions is Puglia, located in southern Italy in the area commonly referred to as "The heel the boot."

The vineyard of Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain in Puglia in Southern Italy. Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Puglia.

While Masseria Li Veli produces many organically farmed wines, one of their most ancient and prized varetials is an indigenous grape called Verdeca and from that is derived their 2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). The region is known for its reddish, clay-like soil which is full of gravel and tuff. This makes it perfect for the vine roots to access the water beds deep underground from the long, wet winters which helps them survive the dry, hot summers. It is all these factors that contribute to what makes this wine so special starting with its inviting, bright yellow color. After admiring the enticing color, the nuances of tropical fruit and citrus start to beckon you to the full-flavored mouthfeel which is complimented by well-balanced acidity. Located in the Ionian and Adriatic Sea, the region has a heavy Greek influence, and the wine pairs perfectly with the bright lemon flavor of your favorite Greek Chicken Recipe but will also shine with a classic Pasta Carbonara or Cacio e Pepe recipe.

2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) is one of our Cellar Specials for May, as well as on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines link on our Home Page.

2018 William Fevre Saint Bris

If you have not had a chance to try the 2018 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99) — a terrific Sauvignon Blanc from Northwest Burgundy — you can hear about it on the Francos Wine Minute which can be found on any of our social media sites as well as our Home Page.

Bourbon Winners for Derby Day

 Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon

The 147th Running of the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday and whether you are a thoroughbred horse fan year round, or just on Derby Day — it's hard not to celebrate without a celebratory glass of Kentucky Bourbon or fabulously refreshing Mint Julep in hand. If you have never looked over Francos Wine Merchants selection of bourbons, here are a few of our favorites.

What better way to celebrate the Run for the Roses than with the outstanding Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon ($37.99). This outstanding whiskey is from one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky. Many of you are familiar with the name but if you have never tasted it you will first be enticed by the spice and richness on the nose, followed by hints of sweet oak and caramel as it first hits your palate. This all leads into a finish which is soft, smooth with definite length. If you want a bourbon made in a classic style, Four Roses is for you.

 Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon

Next we have the Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon ($36.99) where you will find a very crisp nose that is bright and fresh. What you will notice with the Jefferson's is on the taste, you will find lots of creamy vanilla, and a warm, spicy flavor. With notes of oak, toffee and a hint of smoke, this will all lead into a finish that is quite easy going and very quaffable — mostly from the aging in barrels that have a very light char to them. Jefferson's is smooth and light with hints that keep it interesting.

Basil Hayden's Artfully Aged Bourbon Kentucky Owl Confiscated

The classic Basil Hayden's Artfully Aged Bourbon ($44.99) is a bourbon that people are always happy to see on the bar. Basil Hayden's small batch bourbon boasts a blend with more rye than a traditional bourbon. Bottled at a smooth 80 proof, its spicy finish and golden amber color invite enjoying it straight or mixed into your favorite bourbon cocktail.

If you feel the need to treat yourself very well, then our suggestion is the Kentucky Owl Confiscated ($149.99). The distillery was founded in 1879 by local pharmacist Charles Mortimer Deadman who turned a parcel of land gifted to him and his bride as a wedding gift into a distillery which eventually became Kentucky Owl. The Kentucky Owl Confiscated ($149.99) has notes of gardenia, banana bread and toasty sourdough bread with flavors of red apple lingering in the background and a hint of cayenne on the finish.

You can see a complete list of all our bourbon as well as the rest of our American Whiskeys on the Small Batch American Whiskey link on our Home Page.

2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon — Discover Santa Cruz

2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

The great thing about spring evenings is the cool air that sets in once the sun goes down. Still warm enough to stand out by the grill and cook your favorite cut of beef, yet cool enough to enjoy the warming feeling of a delicious full-flavored Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wines of Domaine Eden are no stranger to us, we have long been fond of this vineyard located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. The vineyards, founded in 1983 by the late Tom Mudd bottled under the Cinnabar label until it was purchased in 2007 and now known as Domaine Eden whose major focus is Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

Expressing the true heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99) is comprised of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) along with a little Merlot (15%) and the balance being Petit Verdot and Malbec. The cool weather and ample rainfall of 2016 enhanced the growing season and the long harvest gave the grapes sufficient time to develop and ripen. Fermentation is with native yeasts and after two years of aging in both French and American Oak, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. So after you pick up a bottle of the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99) your next stop should be the butcher to select the perfect Ribeye, T-Bone or NY Strip as an accompaniment. For those of you who have a Chardonnay lover in your group, we also have the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) in stock and perfect for your favorite chicken recipe for the grill.

To expand on the topic of California Cabernet Sauvignon, be sure to listen to the most recent installment of the Francos Wine Minute where we feature one of the stars of Napa Valley, the 2018 Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($119.99) which can be found on our Home Page.

2018 William Fèvre Saint-Bris — Unconventional Burgundy

2018 William Fevre Saint Bris

Burgundy is home of the Chardonnay grape, but there are a handful of exceptions and one such exception is the village Saint-Bris. The small village of Saint-Bris produces the only white burgundy AOC made from Sauvignon Blanc and today we highlight one from William Fèvre.

The year was 1959 when William Fèvre declared his first crop and marked the birth of this domain. William was a descendent from a family who had lived in the region for over 250 years. Starting off with a modest 7 hectares of vineyards, over the years the domain grew to 78 hectares and 90 separate parcels. To preserve their environment, the vineyards are carefully managed to limiting yields, hand harvesting, and the biggest factor being cultivating their organic farming methods over the years.

William Fèvre retired in 1998, but the domain was taken over by Joseph Henriot and under his formidable team headed by winemaker Didier Sequier, they have continued the Fèvre philosophy.

All this brings us to our feature wine, the 2018 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99). This wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grape and has a fresh and intense bouquet. Round on the palate, this wine has an exquisite lightness with delicate notes of black currant and boxwood. Clean and silky in the mouth, this wine will lead you into a crisp and satisfying finish. While terrific with grilled fish, seafood and oysters, this wine will also pair perfectly with a simple charcuterie board or travel all the way up the ladder to scallops in a lemon/saffron cream sauce.

2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

You can find this wine on the New Arrivals link as well as our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link, both located on our Home Page. You may also want to take note of the 2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($26.99) which is of course made from the traditional white grape of Burgundy, Chardonnay.

2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre "Chavignol" — Loire's Secret Village

2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre "Chavignol"

The Loire valley always holds the best surprises in the various regions and villages that dot the terrain. The most famous area is that of Sancerre known for its stunning white wines. Today we are featuring something a little more special, a Sancerre that hails from the tiny village of Chavigonal.

Located in the heart of the Sancerre region, Domaine Delaporte is a family business passed on from father to son since the 17th century. The Domaine's home is in the picturesque village of Chavignol within the region of Sancerre. Since 2010, Matthieu Delaporte has been at the helm focusing on further improvement of the Domaine to highlight the unique terroir of this land.

Today we focus on the 2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre "Chavignol" ($30.99). The vines that make this delicious white wine grow on slopes with a southeast exposure and enjoy a great deal of sun during the average day. The Sauvignon Blanc vines that produce this wine have an average age of 35 years and thrive in the limestone soil for which this region is known. Using no herbicides or insecticides, the grapes for this wine are hand-picked and stainless steel fermented. The result is a wine that has a beautiful pale gold color with a very expressive nose of boxwood, marigold and even a hint of kiwi. Bright and fresh on the palate, this wine has a delicate but zesty flavor. Well balanced and harmonious, the mouthfeel stays lively right through the clean and lingering finish. This wine is perfect with everything from takeout sushi to some delicious grilled fish and a definite contender as a summer white as the warmer weather starts to creep our way.

You can find this one on our Home Page as one of our Cellar Specials for April.

2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay 2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

We are also featuring the organically grown 2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay ($38.99) and 2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.99) on sale this month and the subject of this week's Francos Wine Minute which you can also view on our Home Page.

Flowers Vineyard — Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking

2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

April has arrived and all it takes is a few degrees of warmth to change our mood. Warmer temperatures can also cause some horticultural madness in that we start to see the early spring flowers attracting our attention as we pass the nursery and gardening centers. While the tulips and daffodils are starting to bloom, Francos Wine Merchants has some blossoms of its own with the magnificent wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to go back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

One of their prized wines is the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) which uses organic and sustainable farming practices. They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. The wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific Ocean. While the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) will pair nicely with a delicious piece of halibut or swordfish, if you roast a chicken with the spring herbs of the season, you'd have a smashing pairing.

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your seasonal menus such as Baked Ham and of course a classic Spring Lamb Roast.

You can find both of these wines on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link on our Home Page.

Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino — Organic from Tuscany

2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino

A trip to Tuscany is just a cork away, and what better means to let your mind escape to Tuscany than with a fabulous Brunello. The rolling and sun-drenched hills of this famous region await, so let's take a quick trip.

The hill town of Montalcino in the province of Siena, Tuscany is where we find the estate of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona; an estate that dates back to the 17th century. Originally under the control of Fabivs de' Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino it was purchased by the Countess Eva Bernini Cerretani in 1868 who sold it nine years later to the Ciacci family. After a marriage to the Count Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona and a century of control, in 1985 the Countess Elda Ciacci (who had no heirs) bequeathed the entire property to Giuesppe Biachini, who was a farmer on the estate. Eventually after his death the estate was left to his son and daughter, Paolo and Lucia. The entire estate extends over 220 hectares of both vines and olive groves. It is on this idyllic land where the Biachinis produce several world class wines through organic farming methods.

Today our focus is on their 2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino ($61.99). This wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grape where the vines grow in a soil mixture of sand, silt and clay high above sea level. It's these growing conditions that help create the incredible rich garnet color and deep red berry bouquet that is both intense and fruit forward with delicate spicy notes. Warm and extremely balanced on the palate, this wine is well structured with soft tannins and a long, smooth finish. The 2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino ($61.99) would pair perfectly with a simple game menu, a classic beef braciole, or any traditional pastas dishes where red meat takes center stage.

You can find this wine on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link or hear about it in this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute, both located on our Home Page.

Domaine Eden Chardonnay — Go West Young Man

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

March has arrived which means some days are spring and some days are still winter. Trying to balance out the two can make it a tad difficult to plan our menu and thus makes it difficult to find the right wine. For a white wine that often takes us to Chardonnay and today our search brings us to California.

South of San Francisco in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains we find the home of Domaine Eden. Purchased in 2007 the vineyards of Domaine Eden were founded and built by the late Tom Mudd in 1983 when it was the former Cinnabar Winery. Now, under the ownership of Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson, the vineyards of Mount Eden Estate have begun a new life. At their vineyards located just a short distance away from Mount Eden, the Pattersons have redirected their focus on all their wines, one of which is the incredible 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99).

The 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) offers up wonderful flavors of smoke and dried pear with a hint of toasted nuts. Supple and polished on the palate, this wine is noted for its purity, freshness and rock-solid finish. Some exceptional food complements include a simple Shrimp Scampi, lemony Salmon Croquettes, and Chardonnay is always a great pairing for a roast chicken. But no matter what your food taste, the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) has much to offer. So please wander in or visit us online and let us show you this wonderful wine from Domaine Eden.

Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir — Escape to Mendocino

2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

While there are many Pinot Noirs from which to choose, the trick is to find one that gives you a true flavor of this prized grape. Enter Jason and Molly Drew who started out almost 20 years ago with one clear goal: to craft pinot noir that highlighted the traditional character of this popular varietal.

In 2004 they purchased a 26 acre apple orchard that was for sale in the Mendocino Ridge Appellation. While others saw a daunting task ahead them, Jason and Molly Drew only saw ancient oceanic soil, south facing slopes all a few miles from the ocean. They planted their pinot noir vines and 10 years later they produced their first crop.

The 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) is known for the low yields and intense concentration that the grapes produce at this site just west of the Anderson Valley. With their long standing tradition of sustainable and organic farming practices they remain focused on traditional methods that include whole cluster and native yeast fermentation, hand punchdowns, and in most cases no fining or filtering. Also a big factor were the south facing slopes (1250 foot elevation) which put them just above the fogline and offering a true coastal climate, with the ocean a mere 6 miles away. The grapes grown at this site are smaller in size with thick skins which help produce flavors with deep tones and a mouthwatering aftertaste. You first notice the rich color of this wine which is followed by the intense nose of black cherry, heirloom plum and the classic forest floor base you find in European pinot noir. Once in the mouth you are treated to flavors of pomegranate along with a hint of persimmon which leads into a balanced and long mineral finish and the 13.5% alcohol makes for smooth, enjoyable drinking. We here on the east coast are finally experiencing some mild temperatures the last few days, so while the snow has melted a path to the grill you can certainly enjoy that perfectly marbled New York Strip with this Pinot Noir, but if you are still focusing your efforts indoors, may we recommend pairing with a roast chicken or pork tenderloin with a side of roasted carmelized butternut squash.

You can hear more about the 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) in this week's episode of the Francos Wine Minute and you can find this wine listed under our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines link, both of which can be found on our Home Page.

Bourbon — Your Winter Warmer

 Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon

The Northeast weather pattern has been a bit relentless as of late, and while we may not be able to escape to the sunnier climates this February, there are still ways to warm up your winter. Bourbon is one such warmer; whether you enjoy it straight, on the rocks, or in a tasty Old Fashioned or Manhattan, bourbon is very versatile.

 Jefferson's Reserve Bourbon

There are a few bourbons of note, but seeing that we have just celebrated President's Day, why not start with Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon ($36.99) and the Jefferson's Reserve Bourbon ($57.99). Trey and Chet Zoeller have been crafting the Jefferson's Bourbon line for almost a quarter century and have continued to push the boundaries of bourbon whiskey while holding up the traditions set forth.

Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon

If you prefer something a little more rooted in history, you can't get much more so than Four Roses Bourbon. Hailing back to 1884, Founder Paul Jones, Jr., moved his thriving business to Louisville Kentucky to a section of Main Street known as "Whiskey Row." A few years later he trademarked the name Four Roses after he became smitten by a Southern belle who accepted his proposal of marriage by wearing a corsage of four roses to the night of the Grand Ball, and thus Four Roses Bourbon was born. Today we are proud to offer you the Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon ($22.99)), the Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon ($37.99) and the Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon ($49.99).

 Kentucky Owl Confiscated

If you feed the need to treat yourself very well, then our suggestion is the Kentucky Owl Confiscated ($149.99).

2019 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Saint Véran - The Return

2019 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Saint Veran

When a bargain Burgundy comes along a wise man will take notice. Dominique Lafon has been filling the void when it comes to white Burgundy and so when a limited amount of another one of his releases came to market, we snapped up as much as we could.

For those of you unfamiliar, Dominique Lafon makes some of the most famous and sought after wines in Cotes de Beaune under the Domaine du Comte Lafon label. In 1999 he founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, a biodynamic trailblazing effort in the Mâconnais. Unlike other Beaune producers who did the same, Dominique Lafon did so not by trying to produce a Beaune style wine from this famed region, but rather by striving for wines of quality while keeping the characteristics of the Mâcon region as the goal; and this is where we are going to focus today.

Dominique Lafon's 2019 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Saint Véran ($39.99) is one of the wines that has put this winemaker on the map. Working alongside of winemaker Caroline Gon, the wines of Héritiers du Comte Lafon are certified organic and biodynamic showcasing the true flavor of both the fruit and terrior. This vintage of his Saint Véran is from 25 year old vines and made from 100% Chardonnay grape. Using only indigenous yeasts, this wine is of medium weight showing off a nice lemon-tinged acidity along with a nice satiny palate and a mineral finish. This wine is all at once dry with a little bit of complexity.

2018 Les Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette

This wine would make for a perfect pairing for a menu of any classic roast chicken recipe or also a perfectly seared duck breast. You can find this wine on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link on our Home Page where you will also find another wine of his, the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99).

2019 Les Hérétiques — Legend from the Languedoc

2019 Les Heretiques

While we may be stuck at home these days, luckily we can still travel the world by simply uncorking a bottle of wine and pairing it with a regional recipe. This week Francos had a return visit from an old favorite from one of the most famous wine-making families in the Languedoc, the Iché family.

A topic of discussion in the world of wine is about the new quality of wines from the Languedoc region as of late. This is partly due to the diligent efforts of trailblazers like André Iché. Today our focus in southern France brings us his 2019 Les Hérétiques ($10.99). This wine is a product of the Iché family which was founded by André Iché and who remained at the helm until his death in 2007. Now carried on by his children, André's legacy was one of being an ardent disciple of natural wines. André personified the region and was a leader in elevating it from a producer of bulk wines to a region of wines reflective of its ancient vines and wonderful terroir. 2019 Les Hérétiques ($10.99) is a blend of 80% Carignan grape and 20% Grenache and a perfect choice for those looking to expand their winter wine selection. It has a very floral personality yet provides a firm structure and works perfectly with many of your comfort food recipes that dominate winter menus. So whether you are coming home and throwing together a meatloaf, or you set a stew to simmer all day in the crock pot, this wine is the perfect, casual companion to meals of that fare.

You can find the 2019 Les Hérétiques ($10.99) on the Organically & Naturally Produced Wine link on our Home Page. We were so enamored by this wine from the Iché family that we have purchased 50 cases and it will be one of our Cellar Specials for February.

2018 Spreitzer Estate Riesling Trocken

Also, for those looking to expand their palate in the area of white wines, be sure to check out this week's edition of the Francos Wine Minute where you can hear about the 2018 Spreitzer Estate Riesling Trocken ($17.99). This feature is located on our Home Page.

Winter in the Rhône — Marcel Richaud à la Source

2019 Marcel Richaud a la Source

Winter recipes are in full swing — stews, braised short ribs, ragouts, and ratatouille. All are recipes that cook slowly over several hours as the flavors gradually meld together to a hearty meal. This is a good time to select wines that are also a blend, and one region where we can always find such wines is the Rhône.

Back in 1974 Marcel Richaud became the 5th generation to take over his family domaine in the Rhône. While his family had always sold their grapes, Marcel was determined to sell his own bottles. This meant a total change in operation, mainly his decisions to work with specific parcels of land and grape varietals. But the biggest decision was that he started working organically from day one of taking over the family estate. Marcel learned to work the soil with no chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. His focus was on the earth and vines because he knew that healthy soil leads to healthy vines.

This brings us to the 2019 Marcel Richaud a la Source ($19.99). This enjoyable red wine is a classic blend of four Rhône grape varietals of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. This wine comes from the estate's younger vines and new plantations. The vines have adapted to the rocky, clay and limestone soil for which the region is known. All these factors produce a young, spirited wine that is bursting with flavor. The intense nose greets you with notes of green peppers with just a hint of spice. On the palate the tongue is tantalized by flavors of crushed red fruit and with a beautifully balanced tannic backbone. The native yeasts and the methods of no filtering or fining all add to the overall nuance of this wine. So as you browse your food blogs or read thru that new cookbook you received over the holiday, this is the wine you want to keep in mind as you select a recipe.

As noted above, Marcel doesn't fine nor filter and uses natural methods to adjust the flavors of his wines. While he has gradually handed over the domain to his son and daughter they have dedicated themselves to perpetuating his beautiful work. You can find the 2019 Marcel Richaud a la Source ($19.99) on our Home Page either under our January Cellar Specials or on our Organically and Naturally Produced Wine link.

Masseria Li Veli Verdeca — Ease into January

2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

While 2021 has arrived, it has already taught us that we can't quite unbuckle our seatbelts yet. This makes for a perfect time to fall back on our comfort food recipes and pair your meal with a wine that holds just as much comfort. Where better to find wines such as this than where both such food and wines co-exist, Italy.

The vineyard of Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain in Apulia in Southern Italy, commonly known as "the heel of the boot." Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Apulia.

Located in the Ionic and Adriatic Sea, this region has a heavy Greek influence and would pair perfectly with the bright lemon flavor of your favorite Greek Chicken Recipe but will also shine with a classic Pasta Carbonara or Cacio e Pepe recipe.

2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) is one of our Cellar Specials for January, as well as on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines link. You can also hear about it in this week's Wine Minute. All these links are located on our Home Page.

Champagne to Welcome 2021

2012 Louis Roederer Cristal

Most of us are happy to see 2020 come to an end and if you are excited to welcome 2021 then Francos Wine Merchants has the champagne to ring in the New Year.

 Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee

If you want to welcome 2021 in style, then 2012 Louis Roederer Cristal ($249.99) (sku 2491) ($249.99) is how to do it. Complex and intense, this wine shows off a bouquet of candied citrus, yellow fruit, pear and a hint of toasted almond. The 2012 is undeniably well structured yet the smooth entry gives way to underpinned freshness and a soft, velvety texture. If you are looking to ring in the New Year with an elegant dinner and want to pair an elegant Champagne, this is the one.

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99) (sku 13610) ($59.99) has never once disappointed a champagne lover. More than an icon in Champagne, Bollinger sees an extraordinary level of care and attention in the winemaking process. The average age of a bottle on release is 7-8 years which adds to Bollinger's unique flavor. Greeted by aromas of Meyer lemon with nuances of currant fruit and toast, this blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier produces a wine with a racy yet refined style. Enjoy this sparkling wine right through to its mouthwatering, long, spicy finish.

 Pol Roger Reserve Brut Champagne

Without a doubt, the Pol Roger Reserve Brut Champagne ($48.99) (sku 11432) ($48.99) is our biggest seller of the season. The beautiful straw gold hue sparkles in the fine bubbles of this terrific Champagne. The attractive nose of pear and mango lead into the light flavors of honeysuckle and white jasmine. Once in the mouth the bolder flavors of vanilla and brioche enter in a seamless harmony along with a pleasant freshness all while preserving the structure of this fine wine.

You can see your complete selection by clicking on the Champagne link on our Home Page as well as our Prosecco & Other Sparkling Wine link to view our other sparkling selections.

The Fall Arrival of Lafon Mâcon Chardonnay "Clos de la Crochette"

2018 Les Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette

The white shorts have been put away, the evening sweatshirt has come out of the closet, and your favorite food blogs have started to feature the comfort foods of fall. Now is the time to start to transition our wines towards those with a bit more weight as we welcome the change of the season.

Dominique Lafon has been at in command of his family's property for over thirty years. This property came under the control of the Lafon family when his grandfather, Jules Lafon took the helm in 1931. The biggest changes Dominique Lafon has made in his 30 year reign has been acquiring complete control by bringing an end to all their sharecropping agreements and of course making the domaine completely organic and biodynamic.

While Dominique Lafon has over 17 hectares throughout Burgundy, today we are going to focus on their property in Mâcon and specifically the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99). The grapes of Clos de la Crochette are usually the first to be picked on Lafon's Mâconnais estate. The south-facing slope combined with the clay-limestone soil ripen the fruit to near perfection which gives this wine an enticing oyster-shell reduction reminiscent of a wine of Chablis. Beautifully scented with floral orchard fruit, one can easily pick up the notes of Williams pear, Cox apple and citrus on the nose. Bright and clear this seductive wine beckons you with a beautiful lemon-yellow hue from the moment you pour it into your glass. The substantial weight has a satiny texture and good concentration with a lively acidity throughout. The apple and herb flavors build on the palate as one enjoys the intense, long and gathered structure of this fine effort from Dominique Lafon.

With so many Saturday night dinners now being cooked at home, why not make your first Roast Duck of the season, or perhaps a Chicken & Prosciutto Rollatini or even a simple Baked Halibut Florentine, and pop open a bottle of the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99) and suddenly the end of summer won't seem so bad.

You can find this wine on both our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines and New Arrivals links on our Home Page.

Welcome September with 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

September is underway and we can feel it in the cool mornings and chilly evenings, a subtle sign from Mother Nature to start transitioning out of our summer habits and into fall. One way we do that is with our wine as well as our menus which brings us to the wines of Domaine Eden.

Some exceptional food complements include a simple Shrimp Scampi, lemony Salmon Croquettes, and even the first Roasted Chicken of the fall season flavored with late season herbs from the garden and roasted root vegetables which will soon be appearing at the local farmers markets. But no matter what your food taste, the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) has much to offer.

Hours of Operation during Covid-19 - Until further notice, our Hours of Operation are Tuesday - Saturday 10:00AM - 6:00PM.

Wines for your Labor Day Weekend

2019 Terres de Saint Louis Rose 2019 Aix Rose

Labor Day Weekend is here, with summer starting to wind down, and while fall is a wonderful season we hope to have a few more weeks of warm weather before we start to break out the sweaters. But we here at Francos have talked about some fabulous wines over the past couple of months, so let us recap the highlights which will be perfect for your Labor Day Weekend.

2019 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rose 2019 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

If you are going to bid adieu to summer with lobster then you need to turn to rosé. Francos has some of your favorites on sale from the 2019 Terres de Saint Louis Rosé ($12.99), 2019 Aix Rosé ($19.99) and 2019 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rosé ($19.99) all the way up to the famous 2019 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99). Rosé makes a perfect pairing for any lobster cookout. You can find these wines on our "Refreshing Summer Rosé" link.

2019 Granbazan Albarino Broadbent Vinho Verde

If seafood or clambake is more your style, you have a couple of options to choose from. If you head over to northwest Spain you will find the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99). This classic white wine from Spain's Rias Baixas is made from 100% Albarino, hand-picked and sustainably grown from 35 year old vines. The fresh citrus and orchard fruits accent the bright and mineral-accented nose and palate, making this wine a great pairing with most any seafood. You can also travel over to Portugal where you will find the white wine for which this region is known, the Vinho Verde. The Broadbent Vinho Verde ($9.99), like most, is non-vintage as they are meant to be consumed while young. This wine is a blend of 50% Loureiro, 40% Trajadura, & 10% Pedernã. Clean and balanced with a lively citrus flavor, this wine is a modest 9% in alcohol which makes it perfect for the warmer weather.

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Keeping Labor Day simple with burgers or steak on the grill? Then gamay grape is the way to go. Our suggestion is to revisit the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99). Valérie Forgues own a 16 hectare estate in the Loire and this wine she produces is made from 100% gamay. The vines average 20 years of age and grow in the clay-limestone soil for which the region is known. Working organically (and soon to be certified) Valérie Forgues has produced a gamay that has a fresh, mixed berry nose followed by a pure, fruit flavored palate with a nice touch of acidity.

You can hear about all these wines and more in this week's installment of Francos Wine Minute.

Holiday Hours — Our Hours for the Labor Day Holiday are as follows:

Friday & Saturday 10:00AM - 6:00PM
Sunday & Monday (Labor Day) : Closed

Please note we will be completely Closed on Sunday & Monday with NO Curbside or Delivery services.

Summer lives on with Granbazàn Albariño

2019 Granbazan Albarino

August is here, the sun is blazing and everyone is looking for a wine to take them to a cooler place. So why not take a quick trip to Spain and refresh your wine world with the Albariño grape?

Today we are going to set our sights on the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99). This classic, crisp white wine from the Rias Baixas region in Northwest Spain is 100% Albariño grape. In 1988, the Appellation of Rias Baixas in Northwest Spain was formally established as a Denomination of Origin, and Albariño became the white wine grape of the region.

Granbazàn Vineyards farms about 17 hectares of Albariño vines which are trained in the traditional pergola fashion in the granite based soil for which the region is known. Winemaker Jesus Otero produces this wine from 35 year old vines. The grapes of Granbazàn are sustainably grown and are all hand harvested. The warm summer days along with evenings which are cooled down by the Atlantic breezes all factor into this fantastic wine. Pale golden in color with a slight green hue, the complex aromas of this wine are what first entice you. Nuances of green apple, citrus and tropical fruit first show up along with a secondary layer of white flowers. In the mouth, the tantalizing sensation of crispy acidity along with more floral intensity of honeysuckle greet your taste buds. This wine shows off a medium to full-bodied weight followed by a deep-set core of flavor and texture ending with a dry, brine-like finish.

These qualities of the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99) are what make it not only a lively, bright wine to enjoy at the end of a warm summer day, but also makes it a great pairing for so many foods. While this wine is perfect with raw oysters and clams, don't hesitate to pair it with some lighter fish dishes or even your favorite seafood ceviche recipe.

You can find 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page and we also talk about it in this week's Wine Minute which you can find on our social media sites as well as our Home Page.

Gamay — The Perfect Red for Summer

2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

While hot summer days are a great time to enjoy a crisp white wine or bracing glass of Rosé, sometimes your menu calls for a red wine, so Francos Wine Merchants brings you the Gamay grape.

Gamay is a very close cousin of the Pinot Noir, meaning that it can have enough structure to stand up to full-flavored meals yet not feel heavy in the mouth. While we mostly find the Gamay grape in villages like Brouilly, Morgon and Fleurie, it can also be found in many other growing regions throughout the world. What makes Gamay a great wine for summer, in addition to the easy mouthfeel, is that on a hot day you can actually put a slight chill on this wine without muting the true flavor of the grape; about 20-30 minutes in the refrigerator should do it.

Today we present you with two wines made from the Gamay grape, the first being the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99). This wine from one of our favorite winemakers always gets a great reception from people. As noted on the bottle, this wine is a "Vieilles Vignes" which means it comes from older vines. In this case, they are Jean-Paul Brun's oldest vines which come in at 40-60 years old. These vines grow on a sandy clay-limestone hillside in the village of Charnay, in the southern region of Beaujolais. The farming with Jean-Paul Brun is always organic with manual harvest, and this wine is no exception. The aromas are high-toned and ripe with red currant, raspberry and wild strawberry. On the palate, lush flavors of berry and bright fruit along with a touch of acidity and a long sappy length finish off this wine.

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Next we travel to the Loire Valley and land in Touraine where we find the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99). Valérie Forgues was driven by a desire to make a success of her venture and one of the big changes she made was to start farming organically. With the help of her brother she mastered how to properly work the soils all the while managing her vines and her yields. The result is an organically produced wine that is delicious and well balanced. The deep raspberry color and elegant, fruity nose are the first to entice you. In the mouth the suppleness and structure give this wine a firm mouthfeel and the modest 12% alcohol makes it an easy summertime wine.

So whether you are going to spatchcock a chicken, throw on a steak, or just enjoy a simple burger on the grill, the Gamay grape is where you want to turn. You can find both of these wines on our Organic & Naturally Produced wine link on our Home Page, and they are the subject of this week's Wine Minute, also on our Home Page right under the cellar specials.

2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean — Take a quick trip to the Shore

2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean

If you are not going to the shore this year, it is easy enough to bring the shore to you which can be simple to do with the right wine. The last couple of weeks we have brought you to Spain and Portugal, but this week Francos Wine Merchants brings you back to France.

While the white wines of Burgundy can bring us incredible wines from the villages of Meursault, Chassagne and Puligny which can be very structured in style, sometimes the summer heat calls for a wine that has more crispness to help counter the summer heat; enter Chablis. The vineyards of Chablis in Northern Burgundy are rich in limestone, which is what gives the wines of this region such incredible minerality and sharpness.

Domaine Louis Max owns more than 230 hectares of vineyards, all of which are organically farmed. Their dedication to organic practices allows them to focus on quality rather than quantity. Under the guidance of David Duband, Louis Max has made sustainability their key focus as they want to ensure the Domaine will be passed on to future generations.

The vineyards that bring us their 2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean ($23.99) are spread across hillsides rich in limestone in the north of Burgundy. Here the continental climate, hot in the summer and very cold in the winter all factor into the production of this fabulous white Burgundy. This wine greets you with a yellow/gold brilliant hue with beautiful green reflections. Aromas of honey tantalize the nose while in the mouth we are treated to citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit along with an underlying delicate touch of mineral and a lengthy finish. The briny quality of this Chablis makes it a classic pairing with oysters and seafood, but this wine is also very at home with some simple goat cheese or even a creamy, rich wedge of gruyere.

You can find the 2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean ($23.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page as well as our Organic & Naturally Produced wine link.
