The Wines of Germany and a lesson in Trocken (Dry)

2017 Kruger Rumpf Riesling Trocken 2017 Kruger Rumpf Munsterer Rheinberg Riesling Kabinett

For those of you who still need to acquaint yourself with the wines of Germany, here is a terrific opportunity. Please join is this Saturday May 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome our guest host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Fine Wine Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours a selection of German wines from the Skurnik Portfolio. All these wines are produced in a natural, organic or sustainable fashion which allows the true flavor of the grape to show through.

Our trip to Germany first takes you to Nahe and the small village of Munster-Sarmshiem on the western side of the Nahe River where we find the Kruger Rumpf Estate. The first wine we will pour will be the 2017 Kruger Rumpf Riesling Trocken ($17.99). This wine is made primarily from young vines which gives it a light but fruit-filled aroma as you pour it into the glass. On the palate, nuances of grapefruit, tangerine, and a hint on mineral make up the primary and finishes off with a touch of acidity. This leads us to their other wine, the 2017 Kruger Rumpf Munsterer Rheinberg Riesling Kabinett ($19.99). This wine first entices you with its bright yellow hue followed by flavors of citrus, honey and lemon tart, leading into a cool finish with great finesse. These wines are excellent to pair with pork, spicy food, poultry, and sweet and sour Asian food.

2017 Spreitzer Riesling 101 2017 Von Winning Riesling Trocken

Next travel about 100 KM northeast to the Rheingau where we find winemaker Josef Spreitzer toiling away in his vineyards bringing you the 2017 Spreitzer Riesling 101 ($16.99). Another light/bright Riesling, this one offers an aroma of ripe apple, pineapple, citrus. This refreshing wine has terrific fruit to it and is an excellent choice with many baked/grilled white fishes.

2017 Selbach Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

From there if we travel south to the Pfalz region we find our next wine, the 2017 Von Winning Riesling Trocken ($19.99). This wine has a bit more of a spicy style, with a snappy finish. The touch of acidity on this wine makes it perfect with shellfish of any type.

Finally we travel west to the Mosel where we come across the 2017 Selbach Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett ($24.99). This wine has a more delicate taste with great depth and a very fine balance to it. Most notable is the freshness on the nose that truly separates it from other German whites.

Please join us this Saturday, May 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we are joined by our guest host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Fine Wine Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours this incredible selection of German wines from the Skurnik Portfolio.

The Wines of Jean-Paul Brun — A Lesson in Natural Winemaking

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

Jean-Paul Brun is the unheralded Icon of Beaujolais. His 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon is where you will find him toiling away on his property under the domain name of "Terres Dorées." If you are unfamiliar with this region, the wines of Jean-Paul Brun are a great introduction. Long ago, Jean-Paul Brun realized the importance of working in a natural fashion, shunning the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, hand-harvesting his fruit, and using only indigenous yeast.

Please join us this Saturday, May 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour two of his wines.

First we will start off with the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99). Bright yellow with flavors of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, this Chardonnay offers flavors that come directly from the clay and limestone soil from which the vines grow. The ripe pear and apple flavors are followed by bright acidity and a clean taste that are obtained from their stainless steel aging. Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing with a Roast Chicken spiced with the first sprigs of spring tarragon that is currently popping up in the garden.

2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignees"

Next we move to the 2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignees" ($16.99) which is made from 100% Gamay (a close cousin to Pinot Noir) offering a soft and elegant style. The average age of the vines used to make this outstanding wine range in age from 40 to 60 years old, hence the "Vieilles Vignes" designation. Naturally high sugar levels in the fruit due to late harvesting give this wine a deep color and a rich red-fruit aroma. This is a medium to full bodied red with a very flavorful, fresh taste and a long finish. You will recognize notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, and sweet red plum. The wine has enough structure to easily go with a full-flavored T-Bone or Rib-eye you are planning to christen the grill.

2016 The Chocolate Block

In addition to these two lovely wines from Jean-Paul Brun, we will also be tasting a South African red wine, the 2016 The Chocolate Block ($27.99). This wine from the Stellenbosch region of South Africa is made up of 64% Syrah grape, 14 % Grenache, 11% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and finally 1% Viognier. On the nose, it has a very a complex aroma of dark berries with a hint of white pepper while in the mouth flavors of dark, brooding fruit spring forward. For those of you who prefer a full-flavored red wine to go with your grilled steak, look no further.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join Saturday May 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99), the 2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignees" ($16.99), and the 2016 The Chocolate Block ($27.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

The Wines of Domaine de la Pépière — A Day in the Loire

2017 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

France's Loire Valley is home to many of the wines we seek out in the summer months including Muscadet. A discussion about the Loire would not be complete without speaking of the village of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre which houses the Domaine de la Pépière where winemaker Marc Ollivier has become a central figure in the Loire Valley winemaking world.

Please stop in this Saturday May 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste two of the wines from Domaine de la Pépière that have been created by master winemaker Marc Ollivier.

First a little background: Marc Ollivier has no formal winemaking lineage; all he knew is that he wanted to work outdoors and the wine trade was one of the options open to him. He went to Mâcon for a degree in viticulture and came back with a passion for winemaking. In 1984 his neighbor who was a vigneron died unexpectedly and he had the opportunity to buy his winery, which he did. At that time it was a 7 hectare estate which has now grown into a 28 hectare estate. His farming is all organic with all his fruit hand-picked and hand-harvested. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts, which makes his wines so sought after. La Pépière originates from the word "Pépie" aptly meaning "to be thirsty".

This now brings us to our first wine, the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99). This wine is made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape from vines 20 to 70 years in age from a gentle south-facing slope which allows the fruit to ripen to its fullest. The soil features a compressed form of granite as well as amphibolite rocks scattered throughout.

2015 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Clisson

Next we move to the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99). Also made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape this is a beautifully charming and exceptionally delicate wine. The distinguishing feature on this special plot of land where the vines range from 50 to 110 years old is the soil type. This unusual soil is called granite de Clisson which is a particularly hard, compact granite with little clay and a lot of quartz. This helps produce a wine with an exceptional mineral quality that make it stand out from other Muscadets.

Both the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99) are wines that shine for your summer menus. When you pack up to head to the shore this summer and dream of dinners centered around seafood, most notably shellfish, these are the wines you want to have chilled and at hand.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday May 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

Daniel Rion 2016 Côte de Nuits-Villages Mosaic — return to Burgundy

2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Cote de Nuits Villages Mosaic

Burgundy is alive with the spring budding season, so what better time to reacquaint yourself with the wonder that is Burgundy and the fabulous wines this region provides. One such wine comes from winemaker Daniel Rion, and just this week one of his incredible Burgundies arrived in our inventory. Please join us this Saturday May 4th 1:00-5:00 PM as we pour the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99).

The story of Daniel Rion harkens back to 1955 when this family-owned estate began with only two hectares of vines left to Daniel by his grandfather. Up until 1978 Daniel dealt only with other Burgundian negociants until his sons joined him in the family business. The new venture with his sons not only added new parcels of vines, but also a new winery was built with a larger cellar and tasting room. The original two hectares of land has now grown to over eighteen hectares of vineyards in six villages.

This all brings us to the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99). The manageable size of this estate allows them to hand harvest their grapes which they collect in whole bunches. This method preserves the integrity of the grapes and increases their aromatic potential. The Pinot Noir used in the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99) has a beautiful bright red fruit on the nose backed up with hints of black tar, chocolate and licorice. On the palate the texture is chewy and rich with notes of cherry and fresh strawberries. The mild acidity and firm/ripe tannins all lead into a dry, lean finish. So whether you are going to dine inside and cook the last Magret of Duck of the season, or you are going to dine outside and grill the first steak of the season, this is the wine you want to have in your glass.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join this Saturday May 4th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99).

Welcome Spring with 2017 William Fevre Chablis

2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Spring is moving along and we here on the East Coast have been treated to some classic spring days recently. Keeping the back door open in the evenings and enjoying the warmth as the sun sets is all a perfect time to reacquaint yourself with some wines that may have taken a back seat during the winter months. Once such wine is the 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday April 27th 1:00-5:00PM.

Chablis is a wine region with global renown, and Domaine William Fevre also shares the same notoriety among the world of Chablis. The 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99) is where the fabulous wines of William Fevre all start. This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. The 2017 growing season was graced by beautiful weather in August and into September. This allowed the crop of the 2017 season to reach optimum maturity along with achieving perfect balance, great freshness and magnificent purity. So as the spring herbs such as chives and tarragon start to pop up in the garden, this wine would be a perfect match for herb-rubbed chicken either roasted or grilled. The bright flavors of this wine would mesh perfectly with the fresh clean flavors these herbs have to offer. The 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99) is also one to keep in mind as we progress into the warmer months as its elegant bouquet and flinty flavors of wet stone and a beautifully clean finish will pair well with any shellfish — especially one with a briny quality. The clean and crisp finish of this wine is just what you will be looking for as we creep into June and July.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join this Saturday April 27th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99).

2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir — Evolve into Spring

2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir

Spring has been teasing us with a nice day here and there, but with the bounty of spring vegetables arriving at the store, the Spring Lamb in the meat case at the butcher and the perfect wine, you can give spring a little push in the right direction. One such wine is the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday April 20th 1:00-5:00PM.

The Sokol Blosser Winery was founded in 1970 when wide-eyed young couple, Bill Blosser and Susan Sokol Blosser, found a beautiful old orchard around 30 miles southwest of Portland Oregon in the heart of the Willamette Valley and started the dream of owning a winery. Over the next several years this young couple not only made this region their home and started a family, but also delved head first into their passion for Pinot Noir with the goal to produce world class wines. By 1977 the Sokol Blosser Winery and vineyard was finally completed and they produced their first vintage.

The 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) is a very ripe and juicy fruit-driven wine made of 100% Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. This effort from Sokol Blosser was crafted to be an easy and very approachable wine that is ready to drink. On the nose, hints of chocolate covered cherries blend with rose petals, as well as a little spice. On the palate you will taste bright flavors of red and jammy fruits, sweet cherry, and just a hint of toasty oak. Juicy and fruit-driven with a sophisticated silk, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir has rich and round mouthfeel followed by soft tannins and a long and satisfying finish. When perusing through your food magazines or recipe blogs and seeing the many spring lamb recipes, it is the pinot noir grape that should take center stage. While there are many options, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) would definitely be one to consider, especially if you are looking to satisfy a crowd.

2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes"

Also this weekend we will be pouring the 2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($35.99). Jean-Paul Thévenet is the third generation to produce wine at his family estate in Morgon and his Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" is made from two parcels of vines, one 45 years old and the other 110 years old. Biodynamic and manually harvested, this wine which is made from 100% Gamay grape is harvested as late as possible in the season to achieve maximum ripeness. The result is a wine with a beautiful nose of cherry, pomegranates and slight floral nuance.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday April 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) and the 2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($35.99).

2017 Daou Cabernet Sauvignon — Paso Robles Hidden Treasure

2017 DAOU Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

So often when searching for a big, full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon one instinctively looks to Napa, but if you travel roughly 200 miles south of Napa you'll find yourself in the region of Paso Robles which is the home of many magnificent properties.

One such property is Daou Vineyards and they have hit home run after home run on their last several vintages, and certainly have raised the bar with their 2017 DAOU Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.99) which we will be tasting at our Weekly Wine Tasting Saturday, April 13th 1:00-5:00PM.

Located high in the west hills of Paso Robles, Daou Vineyards stands above the morning fog line allowing the sun to shine on the vines all day long and producing fruit that is ripe and intense with flavor. Brothers Georges and Daniel Daou first fell under the spell of winemaking when they were young and found themselves living in Southern France. Life led them to California looking for that perfect plot of land, and they eventually settled in Paso Robles. Practicing sustainable farming methods, Daou Vineyards also uses deficit irrigation (watering the vineyards only when necessary) stressing them to a hearty ripeness and concentrated fruit flavors. There are also no pesticides used in the vineyard, and all grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted.

2017 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel

The result of all these methods is a wine that is impressive the moment you pour their 2017 DAOU Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.99) into your glass. The dark color, classic to Cabernet Sauvignon, will illuminate ruby red when it hits the light while aromas of black currant and cedar rise to stimulate your olfactory senses. On the tongue, flavors of mocha are prevalent while the full bodied weight of the wine rests firmly in your mouth gently guiding itself into a smooth finish. The 2017 DAOU Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.99) is the perfect wine for this time of year. The nights are cool enough to enjoy a wine of this fullness, yet it is not too cold to prevent you from standing out by the grill cooking a Ribeye or T-bone steak to perfection which would be a perfect pairing for this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday April 13th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 DAOU Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.99). Also at our Saturday Tasting Wine we will be pouring the 2017 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99), a terrific white wine that has green apple, white pepper, and nuances of mango leading into a crisp finish and is a great alternative to serve with all your spring menus.

As always if you are unable to join us you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

April Showers and a glass of Flowers

April has arrived and all it takes is a few degrees of warmth to change our mood. Warmer temperatures can also cause some horticultural madness in that we start to see the early spring flowers attracting our attention as we pass the nursery and gardening centers. While the tulips and daffodils are starting to bloom, Francos Wine Merchants has some blossoms of its own with the magnificent wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Please join us Saturday April 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to go back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

One of their prized wines is the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) which uses organic and sustainable farming practices. They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. The wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific ocean. While the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) will pair nicely with a nice piece of halibut or swordfish, if you roast a chicken with the spring herbs of the season, you'd have a smashing pairing.

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your spring menus such as baked ham, lamb and or course beef.

2013 Cyrus Red Blend — Back to Cali

2013 Cyrus - Alexander Valley Vineyards

Our feature wine this week not only brings us back to California, but back to the roots of Alexander Valley Vineyards with the incredible wine for which this region is known, the 2013 Cyrus - Alexander Valley Vineyards ($54.99) that we will be pouring this Saturday March 30th 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

The roots of the Alexander Valley trace back to Cyrus Alexander who arrived in this valley in 1840 and for whom the valley was named. Many years later the six hundred acre homestead of Cyrus Alexander became home to Alexander Valley Vineyards. Eventually the property was purchased by Harry and Maggie Wetzel, and now four generations later the 2013 Cyrus - Alexander Valley Vineyards ($54.99) is a tribute to Cyrus, the region, and the very best this valley has to offer.

The 2013 Cyrus - Alexander Valley Vineyards ($54.99) is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (64%) with the balance made up of Cabernet Franc (20%), Merlot (7%), Malbec (5%), and Petit Verdot (4%). This wine is a Bordeaux Style blend of full bodied richness and firm structure. The first greeting you get from this wine upon pouring it into your glass is the dark purple color. This is immediately followed by intense earthy aromas of cassis and black cherry. In the mouth, flavors of dark chocolate, cherry and other dark fruit are encompassed by a smooth, silky texture. The superb balance of this wine leads seamlessly into a long and structured finish. Serve the 2013 Cyrus with a Florentine-style T-Bone steak and sit back and enjoy the marriage of steak and fresh rosemary with the earthy flavors of this wine.

Please join us Saturday, March 30th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2013 Cyrus - Alexander Valley Vineyards ($54.99).

2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay & 2016 Crossbarn Pinot Noir — California Dreamin'

2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay

While we often travel the globe with our wine selections, we can sometimes forget that there are terrific finds close to home. Some of the most flavorful and lively wines in the world come from right here in the United States, and many from the exceptional vineyards in California. This week at Francos Wine Merchants, we will be tasting two superb wines from this fabulous state and we hope that you will join us.

Please stop by this Saturday, March 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we take a journey to the west coast, and pour the 2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ($24.99) and the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99).

Starting off in Santa Barbara, the 2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ($24.99) is a wine which has truly developed an identity of its very own. One reason this Chardonnay is so unique is that it is a blend from four different vineyard sites: Bien Nacido, Sierra Madre, Los Alamos, and Rancho Vinedo. A fine example of the Au Bon Climat style, this wine has a subtle, yet very refined taste. On the palate, you will taste notes of lemon-lime, as well as soft vanilla. It is balanced and lively, certainly the type of wine which makes you want to pour yourself a second glass. A great pairing for poultry or shellfish, this is a wine that complements a variety of foods. But with the spring mushrooms starting to arrive at the supermarket, pair this wine with the woody flavor of a Chanterelle Mushroom Pasta, and you'll surely be amazed.

2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma

As we leave Santa Barbara County and we take a long, scenic drive towards Northern California we arrive at California's infamous Sonoma Coast. Here is where we find our next California jewel, the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99). The Crossbarn label is produced by California Winemaking legend, Paul Hobbs. Hobbs grew up on his family's farm, and from a young age learned to distinguish fruits that were grown in different locations and climates as well as the benefits of a very "hands on" approach to growing. All this eventually led to his ability to create the variety of wines he produces today. After years of working for some of the most famous vineyards in California, he decided to pursue his own wine-making ventures. The 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99) is one of those efforts and it is made of 100% Pinot Noir. This wine has a vibrant ruby red color in the glass and on the nose dark cherry and perfumed violet nuances are powerful, yet elegant. This is a balanced and refined red, which has a long and exciting finish. Now that the path from the kitchen door to the grill is free of snow, it may be time to think about a nice Skirt Steak to pair with this fabulous Pinot Noir.

Please join us Saturday, March 23rd 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ($24.99) and the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99).

2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera — An Afternoon in Sicily

2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera

Continuing on our tour of Italy this month, we bring you to the island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean just off the toe of Italy's boot. Sicily's temperature is moderated by the warm waters of the Mediterranean and mild temperatures that range from the high 40s in January to the high 80s in August. On this beautiful and wine-rich island there are multiple vineyards that have been around for many generations, each one rich with history and traditions. One of these great wine-producing families is the Tasca family, who has been producing wine at five different estates throughout Sicily for eight generations.

Please join us this Saturday, March 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we take a journey to the Tascante Estate, as we pour the 2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

The highest peak in Sicily is Mount Etna, an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily. It is on the northern side of this mountain that we find the vineyards that produce the 2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99). Surrounded by olive, chestnut and oak trees, this biodiverse ecosystem plays a big role in the personality of this wine. Enter the Nerello Mascalese grape grown in the volcanic soil in the Piano district of Catania. The grapes grown here flourish and ripen in the hot Sicilian summer before being picked in mid to late October. It is these warm days that gives this wines its fresh and ripe flavor and showcases the true personality of this native grape of Sicily. Upon pouring this wine you will first notice its cherry red color in the glass and in the mouth you are treated to a bright, fresh taste and soft tannins. It is the easy drinkability of this wine which makes it fine on its own, but also makes it very food friendly. Our suggestion would be to dig out a traditional Sicilian recipe of Pasta alla Norma or Braciole di Manzo and you will instantly transported to Italy's most famous island.

Please join us Saturday, March 16th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find this wine as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

New Arrivals from Umbria & the Wachau Valley

2017 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel

While we wait for spring in this confusing month of March where one day is sunny and in the 50s and the next day is snowy and below freezing, at least there is the excitement of new wine arrivals. Francos Wine Merchants received three terrific new wines this week and we are excited to share them with you.

Please join us Saturday, March 9th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the following three wines.

If you're familiar with the beautiful European country of Austria you may know the most famous region is the Wachau which produces distinct wines that are crisp and dry. The Wachau is home to the renowned 2017 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99). This wine has a great flavor full of fresh fruit, and has pleasant hints of mineralization as well. Distinct tastes of green apple, as well as white pepper, and nuances of mango are all in balance to create a crisp finish, with a light spice to round out the palate. For those of you looking for white wine that is different, the 2017 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) is a great alternative to serve with various seafood dishes, or a variety of poultry menus. Although, if you are so inclined to dig out a traditional "weiner schnitzel" recipe that would be a classic match for this wine.

2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso

From Austria if we take a quick jaunt to central Italy we arrive in the region of Umbria where we find our next two wines from the Fongoli Estate.

The Fongoli Estate is in the center of the famous Umbrian wine country where the Fongoli Family has been producing wines for over 80 years. The property was first purchased by Decio Fongoli Calvani in 1927 and three generations later is currently owned by siblings Angelo and Simona Fongoli where they still practice organic farming methods on all their wines.

The first wine we will pour from this famous region is the 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99). This is a well-structured wine, with bright, ruby red color comprised of 60% Sangiovese grapes, and 40% Montepulciano grapes. The 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99) has a fruity taste that pairs delightfully with pasta dishes, especially traditional ones from the area such as Rigatoni All'Amatriciana.

2015 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso

The next wine from this famous property is the 2015 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99). A tad drier than its brother, this wine is full of flavors coming from the blend 60% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot and 10% Montepulciano. Carrying a bit more bite to it, this wine has a spicy yet fruity taste in the mouth which opens up beautifully in the glass and would flourish with some decanting. A great wine to have with cheeses, but its true culinary home would be a pairing with some traditional Umbrian dishes such as Pork with Juniper berries or Spring Rack of Lamb with Saffron.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on March 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2017 Domane Wachau Gruner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99), the 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99) and the 2015 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99).

As always, you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

Chateau de Combel-la-Serre — Cahors Galore!

2017 Chateau de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

It's always nice to see the return of an old friend and so we here at Francos Wine Merchants were very happy to see the return of the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99).

Please join us Saturday, March 2nd 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) from the small region of Cahors, the origin of the Malbec grape.

To get to this region one need to travel almost 400 miles south of Paris to Southern France where we come to the area of Cahors. As we travel thru we find winemaker Julien Ilbert toiling among his vines that have been in his family for generations. His 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) is one of his prized efforts. Commonly called "Cot" in this region this grape's thin skin is what makes it so susceptible to climate and soil conditions. In the terroir of the Cahors region this grape produces a very dark colored wine (it is often referred to as the "Black Grape") yet has a tremendous flavor of blackberry fruit. This wine in particular shows off these berry flavors mostly due to the limestone soil that is widespread throughout the region. Unlike its beefier South American cousins, this Malbec is lighter in style, yet still big in flavor and would be a perfect pairing for a Flat Iron Steak or even a more full-flavored Rib-Eye. The Malbec is quite often used as a blending grape in the production of wine from Bordeaux, but this grape has truly found a lovely home in the Southwest region of France, in the Cahors appellation.

2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges"

Also on Saturday, if you are willing to take a quick detour to the northeast, you will end up in the Loire village of Chinon where we find the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99). This wine is made from 100% Cabernet Franc from vines with an average age of 30-35 years. Practicing organic farming methods with wild-yeast fermentation, this wine shows a deep red/black color and beautiful aromas of black fruit and supple strawberry and blackberry flavors and a bright acidity all balanced out by a modest 12.5% alcohol.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, March 2nd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) and the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99).

As always, you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

Masseria Li Veli Verdeca & Passamante — an Afternoon in Apulia

2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Italy always seems to offer something out of the ordinary and this week our feature wines takes us to Apulia. For those of you unfamiliar with Italian geography, this region is also known as "the heal of the boot" located in the southern part of the country.

Please join us this Saturday February 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99).

Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain. Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Apulia.

First we will treat you to the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). Verdeca is an ancient Apulian grape variety that is indigenous to Apulia. This wine has a terrific bright yellow color with subtle green shades that is intense fruity on the nose, with scent of tropical fruit, citrus, pear and fresh spices. On the palate you will find it to be a full, well balanced wine with a good acidity. The fruity, mineral and mildly spicy aftertaste would be perfect if you were whipping up a dish of Cacio e Pepe or classic Pasta Carbonara recipe.

2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante

Next we have the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99) made from the Negroamaro grape. Located beside the vineyard is a forest and in times past, lovers would walk by this vineyard on their way to the forest looking for private time with their paramour. Soon it became known as the Forest of Lovers and took on the name of Passamante from the words "Pass" (to pass) and "Amante" (Lover). But the wine itself has the essence of young lovers in that the nose of this wine is lively and intense with scents full of ripe red fruits as well as hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. This enjoyable, medium-bodied wine has a long and full grip, as well as an acidic touch, giving it a delightfully fresh finish. This wine is an excellent complement to traditional Italian pasta dishes such as Pappardelle with Roasted Tomato Sauce, as well as a delightful pairing for a piece of aged cheese.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we open the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99) and perhaps you too can enjoy a taste of an authentic Italian vineyard, rich in history, and glowing with beautiful flavor.

When Iris Eyes are Smiling — 2015 Iris Pinot Noir

Our feature wine this week is once again a Pinot Noir, but this time from Oregon. Pinot Noir is a finicky grape that grows differently in various climates, but has adapted very well to Oregon's Willamette Valley and this week's wine is from a small vineyard located in this region.

2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir

Please join us this Saturday February 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99).

If you travel to the southern part of the Willamette Valley, you will come up an unassuming gate which brings you down a long, winding country road thru beautiful and peaceful woods. Immediately upon leaving the woods you arrive at a breathtaking view of fifty acres of vines that stretch out before you and you have arrived at Iris Vineyards. Named for the wild Douglas Iris that bloom here in the spring, this south facing, bowl-shaped valley is surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Oregon Coast Mountain Range.

Owners Richard Boyles and Pamela Frye are proud to bring you the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99). They began planting their vineyard in 1996 and their first vintage was in 2001. Their 2015 vintage is crafted under the watchful eye of winemaker Aaron Lieberman who joined them in 2008 and he is now going on his tenth vintage at Iris. What first strikes you with the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99) is the bright ruby color as it hits the light as it leaves the bottle. The aromas of raspberry, plum and blackberry are released as you pour it into your glass. In the mouth you are treated to a deep, rich flavor and a long palate which is what makes this wine so versatile with a variety of foods.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99) and you can taste the fabulous effort from Iris Vineyards for yourself.

Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir — A taste of Mendocino

While there are many Pinot Noirs to choose from the trick is to find one that give you a true flavor of this prized grape. Jason and Molly Drew started out almost 20 years ago with one clear goal: to craft pinot noir that highlighted the traditional character of the varietal.

2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

In 2004 they purchased a 26 acre apple orchard that was for sale in the Mendocino Ridge Appellation. While others saw a daunting task ahead them, Jason and Molly Drew only saw ancient oceanic soil, south facing slopes and a true coastal climate a mere 3 miles from the ocean. They planted their pinot noir vines and 10 years later they produced their first crop.

The 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) is known for the low yields and intense concentration that the grapes produce at this site just west of the Anderson Valley. With their long standing tradition of sustainable farming practices they remain focused on traditional methods that include whole cluster and native yeast fermentation, hand punchdowns, and in most cases no fining or filtering. The grapes grown at this site are smaller in size with thick skins which help produce flavors with deep tones and a mouthwatering aftertaste. You first notice the rich color of this wine which is followed by the intense nose of black cherry, heirloom plum and the classic forest floor base you find in European pinot noir. Once in the mouth you are treated to flavors of pomegranate along with a hint of persimmon which leads into a balance and long mineral finish. We here on the east coast have been lucky enough to be treated to some mild temperatures, so while the snow has melted and the path to the grill is clear, why not find that perfectly marbled New York Strip and open up this prized bottle from the Drew Family?

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday, February 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) and you can taste the fabulous effort from the Drew Family for yourself.

Jordan & Caymus - Super Bowl Battle of the Cabs

2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon

Whether you are a Patriots fan or a Rams fan (or even a Commercial fan) Super Bowl Sunday holds something for everyone. But at Francos Wine Merchants, the battle won't be on the field this weekend; it will be in the glass! We will be pouring two of our best-selling Cabernets at our Weekly Wine Tasting and we invite you to come and root for your favorite one.

Please join us Saturday February 2nd, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99) and the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99).

Hailing from Alexander Valley, the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99) is a consistent favorite among cabernet drinkers. Every vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon strives to achieve that perfect balance of fruit and tannins and the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99), under the watchful eye of Winemaker John Jordan and Rob Davis, is no exception. Upon uncorking the bottle you are met with powerful aromas of cassis and black currants, as well as an intense fragrance of blackberries. Pour it in your glass and beautiful floral notes rise up to greet your olfactory senses and entice you even more. Your first sip reveals a mouthful of ripe cherry flavor surrounded by a solid core that is unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich and seductive flavors are carefully entwined with the fine tannins imparted by the aging in new French oak barrels.

2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

From there if you travel south towards Napa Valley, you will find the home of the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99). This latest offering from Napa winemaking legend Chuck Wagner is a welcome sight whether you are a wine collector or simply a lover of full-bodied California Cabernets. Following in the footsteps of preceding vintages, this wine with its lush, rich flavors of dark Napa fruit all centered around a full-bodied core never disappoints those who love what Napa is all about. Winemaker Chuck Wagner practices a technique called "hang time" where he lets the fruit "hang" on the vine unusually long to develop the suppleness and mature tannins for which Caymus is known. The result of this is a wine with dense opaque purple color and stunning rich flavors of blackberry and cassis.

So for those of you straying from typical Super Bowl Sunday fare and maybe opting for grilling a New York Strip or well-marbled Rib-eye instead, either one of these two California favorites will be the wine to match.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 2nd, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99) and the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99), and you can decide for yourself which one will take home the trophy.

Saturday is also a great day to stop in for your other Super Bowl supplies, whether you need some Bourbon and/or Rye because you are mixing up some pre-game Manhattans (all on our Small Batch American Whiskey link), or maybe you need some Tequila because tacos and guacamole are on the menu. But it may be that all you need is some beer for your secret chili recipe, but whatever it is, Francos will be here to help. We will be open our regular hours on Sunday, Noon-5:00PM, for those of you who need any last minute supplies.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Join the Culture of Cool with the Wines of Jean‑Paul Brun

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

One of the most astonishing conundrums seems to me to be people who go out of their way to go to a market where the produce is known to be local and/or fresh, who examine to see where their beef or chicken originate from, or read up on how the hens are housed with the eggs they buy, yet they do not go to the same length of inquiry with their wine. The wines of Jean-Paul Brun hail from a 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon where you will find winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties in a very "hands on" process where he creates some of the most fabulous wines in the region.

We've often talked of the wines of Jean-Paul Brun and this weekend we will be pouring two of them at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday, January 26th 1:00-5:00PM. Jean-Paul Brun is a master craftsman who focuses on making classically styled wines in a natural fashion with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and also no additives applied in the winery. All this effort brings forth a wine that is both the best of terroir as well as the varietal.

Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing for everything from a Roast Chicken with a simple Lemon/Butter/Thyme marinade to an easy mid-week meal of Chicken Thighs baked on a simple mirepoix bed and drizzled with a flavor infused olive oil.

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Next we move over to the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99). Back in 1989 Jean-Paul Brun was one of the few producers in the region to plant Pinot Noir and thus allowed him to release the wine under the Bourgogne appellation. The bright ruby-red clarity of the wine is evident the moment you pour the wine into the glass. The fresh and energetic nose entices you into that first sip which brings forth flavors of fresh raspberry and cherry flavors and a zesty mineral overtone. A spine of juicy acidity runs straight thru the wine and lifts the fruit flavors thru a long, seamless finish. If it is too cold for some of you to make your way out to the grill, may I suggest you dig out you trusty cast iron pan and cook up a butter-basted pan seared T-bone or Ribeye and pull the cork on this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday January 26th 1:00-5:00PM as we open both the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99) and the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99).

Heat up this Snowy Weekend with 2016 The Arsonist

2016 The Arsonist

For those of us on the East Coast it looks like we are in for some snow in the coming days. So it's a good weekend to settle into some of the playoff football games and dig out a few comfort food recipes. What you will also need is a fabulous wine to pair and Francos Wine Merchants has one that is perfect.

Stop in this Saturday January 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99) — a terrific blend from California.

Taking a break from straight varietal wines such as Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Malbec, 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99) is a terrific option for those of you who prefer a Meritage or Bordeaux style blend. The Arsonist Red Blend is from the Matchbook Wine Company, a family-owned winery in the Dunnigan Hills region in Northern California. The Giguiere family came from Quebec City to Yolo County in the 1850s in search of land and open ground. Five generations later John and Karl Giguiere have a very intimate knowledge of the region's soil and climate. The Arsonist Red is a blend of primarily Petit Verdot (53%) with the balance comprised of Malbec (28%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (19%). Dark ruby red in the glass, the aromas of violets, blackberry and caramel rise up and mingle with the wines nuance of toasty oak and vanilla notes. Opulent and lush in the mouth, the flavors of dried blueberries and juicy plum tantalize the taste buds and then transition seamlessly into a lengthy finish. This full-bodied wine will have no problem standing up to a pan-seared Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon or a Peppercorn-crusted New York Strip Steak. But if it's a lazy Sunday afternoon and you have the time to braise some Short Ribs in tomato, this wine would shine beautifully.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Don't just dream about how nice this wine may taste, stop in on Saturday January 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99) and see for yourself what a beautifully styled wine this is and think about some terrific food pairings.

2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino — Long name, long flavor

2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino

While January weather has been mild for the most part, there are still some cold, damp days that call for an enjoyable red wine to heat up our evenings. The region of Tuscany not only offers up many wines like this, but the 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99) will conjure up images of a picturesque hillside being warmed by the afternoon sun, as soon as you pull the cork. Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring this wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday January 12th 1:00-5:00PM.

Travelling south of Florence about 70 miles, you arrive in the region of Montalcino where is we find the 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99). The brother and sister team of Paolo and Lucia Bianchini are continuing the work of their father, Giuseppe who passed in 2004. The Bianchini family was gifted the estate in 1985 by Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona who had no heirs. The 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99) is organically grown and is made from 100% Sangiovese. The clarity of the ruby red color is what first greets you as you pour this wine into the glass. As you swirl the wine, almost instantly aromas of red berry rise up and burst into a beautiful bouquet. While this wine has a warm approachable style, it is the softness of tannins that create the backbone of flavor. Whether it's a lazy Sunday afternoon and you have time to slow cook a nice Pork Ragu with Garganelli, or you get home late and are making a quick mid-week meal of Bucatini all'Amatriciana, this is the wine you want to pair with your meal.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday January 12th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99).

Ease into January with 2017 Jean Paul Brun Brouilly

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Post-holiday blues have started, visiting relatives have finally left the house, we are back at our desk, and we are still writing 2018 on our checks. So if you need a relaxing glass of wine while contemplating taking down your dried out Christmas tree, Francos Wine Merchants has one that will ease you right into the New Year — the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99) that we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday, January 5th 1:00-5:00PM.

If you were to visit his estate just north of Lyon, it would not be unusual to find Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his property where he creates his wines which have garnered so much attention in both the French and American press. Jean-Paul Brun is one of the most revered winemakers in the appellation working only in a natural fashion. This means he uses no pesticides in the vineyards and only hand picks his grapes when ready to harvest. But his natural ways of winemaking don't stop at just the farming; it also carries over into production. He does not use industrial yeasts, but rather uses only indigenous yeasts. He also believes that wine drinks best at a lower degree of alcohol and therefore sees no need to systematically add sugar to obtain certain levels of alcohol. His wines are made to be pleasurable with the flavors of the true fruit shining through.

The 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99) is nicely structured with elegant fruit and an earthy minerality. The two parcels of 50 year-old vines on a steep section of Brouilly with a south-east exposure lends to the flavors found in the bottle. The deep, clear color you observe as soon as you pour this wine into your glass signifies what an outstanding wine you have chosen. The palate is ripe but balanced with black and red fruit liqueur and fresh, bright acidity that linger in the finish. A beautiful wine ready for current drinking and a perfect match for many of the more simple menus we now turn to at this time of year.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday January 5th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99).

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Ring in 2019 with the Season's most Popular Champagnes

2008 Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee

The week leading up to New Year's Eve always seems to go by quickly, and you don't want to be caught short. If you still are in need of Champagne for your celebration then look no further than Francos Wine Merchants.

If you want to celebrate in style, then the 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal ($275.99) is how to do it. The 2008 is said to be their finest vintage since the much touted 2002, which is why they did not rush and aged it ten years before its release. Complex and intense, this wine shows off a bouquet of candied citrus, yellow fruit, pear and a hint of toasted almond. The 2008 is undeniably well structured yet the smooth entry gives way to underpinned freshness and a soft, velvety texture. If you are looking to ring in 2019 with an elegant dinner and want to pair an elegant Champagne, this is the one.

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99) has never once disappointed a champagne lover. More than an icon in Champagne, Bollinger sees an extraordinary level of care and attention in the winemaking process. The average age of a bottle on release is 7-8 years which adds to Bollinger's unique flavor. Greeted by aromas of Meyer lemon with nuances of currant fruit and toast, this blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier produces a wine with a racy yet refined style. Cristal — Bollinger — Pol Roger. It's Champagne Day at Francos

2008 Louis Roederer Cristal

Champagne. Nothing makes a gathering more festive than to start the evening off with something sparkling. Now that the holidays are upon us, you want to make sure you have plenty of Champagne on hand and this weekend Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring a few for you to consider.

Please join us on Saturday December 15th 1:00-5:00PM for a Champagne Tasting featuring three of the most popular Champagnes of the season.

The star of our Champagne line up is the 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal ($275.99), Louis Roederer's flagship cuvée. Whether for a gift or for the holiday menu, if you are a lover of Champagne this is a wine you don't want to pass you by.

 Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee

Next in line we have the Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99). Enjoy this sparkling wine right through to its mouthwatering, long, spicy finish.

 Pol Roger Reserve Brut Champagne

A discussion of Champagne would not be complete without Pol Roger Reserve Brut Champagne ($48.99). The beautiful straw gold hue sparkles in the fine bubbles of this terrific Champagne. The attractive nose of pear and mango lead into the light flavors of honeysuckle and white jasmine. Once in the mouth the bolder flavors of vanilla and brioche enter in a seamless harmony along with a pleasant freshness all while preserving the structure of this fine wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday December 15th 1:00-5:00PM as we celebrate the holiday season by pouring the 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal ($275.99), the Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99) and the Pol Roger Reserve Brut Champagne ($48.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order these and any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

The countdown to the 25th has started, so if you plan on ordering for the holidays be sure to reference our Delivery Deadline link.

Taste the Wines of the Bergström Estate

2015 Bergström Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir

The wines of the Bergström Family will pair perfectly with your Thanksgiving meal. Whether you enjoy the delicate firm structure of a Pinot Noir or a very expressive full-styled Chardonnay, the Bergströms have you covered. Not only do we have three of their exceptional wines in stock, but we will be pouring them at our Weekly Wine Tasting. So please make time to join us on Saturday, November 17th 2018 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Drew Viner, Northeast Sales Manager of Brescome Barton, to pour these exceptional wines.

The Bergström story begins with John Bergström who grew up in a small agricultural and logging village in northern Sweden. As a teenager he set out for Oregon in search of the American dream which brought him through medical school where he became a successful surgeon. After meeting his wife Karen and raising five children in his new homeland, John decided to return to his agricultural roots and pursue his dreams of owning a vineyard and eventually founded Bergström Wines. Today the vineyards consist of five biodynamic estate vineyards that span across the Willamette Valley's best appellations, crafting wines that are very much in the Burgundian style.

Let us begin our visit with the 2015 Bergström Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir ($41.99). This pinot noir is an artistic blending from their five estate farmed properties which highlights the fresh fruit character, sweet spices and warm earthiness that the Willamette Valley is best known for. Dark and vibrant, this cherry colored wine has explosive aromas of dark cherries, black currant and blueberries. The silky mouthfeel and mouthwatering finish will have you dreaming of how it will pair with the melody of flavors at the Thanksgiving table.

2015 Bergström Silice Pinot Noir 2015 Bergström Sigrid Chardonnay

Staying with the Pinot Noir grape, we move over to the 2015 Bergström Silice Pinot Noir ($69.99). This wine has a deep and vibrant ruby red color, a youthful violet hue, and a bouquet of candied fruit, warm spices and savory herbs which rise up from the glass. The Bergström Silice has flavors of just-ripe berries that are bursting with juicy acidity, yet not over-ripe or jammy. The firm structure is enhanced by the complex nuances of smoke, spice and exotic wood. This is a fresh and vibrant pinot noir with a solid core of sweet fruit flavors. Dig out your Aunt's famous oyster stuffing recipe because this is the wine that will stand up to it.

Finally we move over to their landmark white wine, the 2015 Bergström Sigrid Chardonnay ($89.99). Known throughout the world, this estate grown, biodynamic wine is the finest expression of Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley. The striking golden color with slight green hue of the 2015 vintage is probably the most mineral and floral Chardonnay they have crafted to date. The bouquet of citrus blossoms, fruit, flint and smoke makes for a lively bouquet that magically does not overpower itself. The flavor profile of this wine is noticeably citrus in the front of the mouth, yet texturally complex in the back of the mouth. The flavors of lemon, lime and grapefruit combine magically and all come together in a silky, crème fraiche finish. The brightness, firmness and elegance of this wine will stun you with its complexity and brings you back to Chardonnay's Burgundian roots.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday November 17th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour wines of the Bergström Estate. As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Jolly Bolly — Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée

 Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee

Whether you are one who drinks Champagne only at the holidays, or one who drinks it year round, the next few weeks are the weeks where the two will meet. So for the casual Champagne drinker and the serious Champagne drinker we have in stock one that will please you both — the Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99).

First a little history: Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 by Joseph Bollinger, a widely travelled German who had left his country to learn about the Champagne wine trade. Eventually, the Champagne house was taken over by his sons Joseph and Georges and under the guidance of the two brothers it started to gain great renown and they extended their vineyards considerably. The vineyard was passed down through the family surviving wars, phylloxera blight, and untimely deaths. Then in 2008, for the first time in its history, the Champagne House was placed in the care of Jérôme Philipon, a chairman who was not a family member. Under Jérôme's tutelage the House has continued to preserve its traditional expertise while incorporating the best of new technologies.

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99) has a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier. The dosage is a moderate 8 to 9 grams per liter which produces an elegant and dry champagne. You are first captured by the bright golden color and the very fine bubbles for which the Champagne is known. On the nose, you are treated to a beautiful aromatic complexity with aromas of ripe fruit and a touch of spice. Also of note are the hints of baked apple and peach. The real joy comes with your first taste which exudes a subtle combination of structure, length and vivacity. The flavors of pear, brioche and notes of fresh walnut are carried by the Champagne's lively effervescence. The flavors make you think past just using the wine for celebratory purposes and instead make you dream of meals where shrimp, prawn, poultry or lobster take the helm.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday November 10th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99). As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order this wine or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Que Syrah, Syrah — 2016 Chateau Campuget 1753 Syrah

2016 Chateau Campuget 1753

The Rhone Valley is where we tend to turn to in the fall season, as we seek out wines to go with our heartier menus. While many of the wines with which we are familiar tend to be the Cote du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape, there are plenty of smaller bottlings from the Rhone Valley that have a lot to offer and Francos Wine Merchants is pouring one this weekend.

Please Join us on Saturday November 3rd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Chateau Campuget 1753 ($20.99).

This 100% Syrah from the Rhone Valley takes its name from the earliest date mentioned in documents found at Chateau Campuget. This appellation of the Rhone Valley, known as the Costieres de Nimes, is the southernmost appellation in the Rhone. It is a fantastic place to grow grapes with 2,700 hours of sunshine a year which is reflected off the rocky/gravelly terrain and onto the vines allowing them to ripen fully.

2016 Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone

The 2016 Chateau Campuget 1753 ($20.99) exemplifies the extraordinary qualities of the Syrah grape. This wine has a beautiful dark ink color in the glass along with nuances of blackcurrant, blackberry and hints of cocoa. Once on the palate, the flavors of violet and licorice explode on the tongue. The tannins have an easy elegance to them and they lead into round and velvety notes. All these flavors trail off into a long, refined finish that reminds us of what a quality Rhone Syrah is meant to be. So if you are dying to make that first beef stew of the season, or perhaps you have access to some venison or other game meats, you will find that this classic Rhone wine from Chateau Campuget will make for the perfect pairing.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday November 3rd, 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the wonderful 2016 Chateau Campuget 1753 ($20.99). Also on Saturday, we will be pouring another Rhone favorite, the 2016 Kermit Lynch Côtes du Rhône ($13.99).

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these wines or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Celebrate Autumn with The Arsonist & Vajra Dolcetto

2016 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto D'Alba

These cool autumn nights may have you pulling out a Braised Beef Ragu recipe or it may have you standing in the cool night air grilling that final steak of the season. Whichever you choose, Francos Wine Merchants has two terrific wines which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this weekend that will pair perfectly.

Please join us on Saturday October 27th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome our host Ms. Ana Bermudez of The Winebow Group as she pours two wines from the Winebow portfolio.

First Ana will bring you to Northern Italy where we find the 2016 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto D'Alba ($17.99). This wine is 100% Dolcetto grape farmed from two of their vineyards located in the town of Barolo. This vintage was preceded by a harsh winter but mild spring and a warm summer. The result was an early ripening of the grapes, reduced yields and decreased acidity producing a soft, rich colored Dolcetto. The vibrant purple color is both deep and brilliant in the glass. The nose is a symphony of red fruit and cherry with notes of licorice. Once in the mouth you will find this wine to be lively and complex with silky tannins and a bright freshness. All these characteristics make for a wine that is versatile and food friendly.

2016 The Arsonist

Ana will then bring you back to the United States to California where we find the next wine we will be showing, the 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99). For those of you who prefer a Meritage or Bordeaux style blend will feel right at home with this wine. 2015 The Arsonist is a blend of primarily Petit Verdot (53%) with the balance comprised of Malbec (28%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (19%). So get that Pan-Seared Filet Mignon recipe going or find that Peppercorn-crusted New York Strip and pop the cork for a delicious pairing.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday October 27th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Ms. Ana Bermudez of The Winebow Group as she pours both the 2016 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto D'Alba ($17.99) and the 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99).

2016 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape — A Robert Parker 97

2016 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape

When an outstanding property and a perfect growing season collide, we all benefit. Beaucastel is perhaps the most famous Chateauneuf du Pape dating back to 1549 and this weekend we will be pouring their most famous wine the 2016 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape ($79.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting Saturday October 13th 1:00-5:00PM.

Beaucastel is foremost a family story, the story of the Perrin family. The story starts in the 16th Century when records show Pierre de Beaucastel buying land in Coudoulet. Jump to 1909 when Pierre Perrin purchased the land from his father in law and the property has stayed in the Perrin family ever since. After Pierre Perrin, Beaucastel was managed by Jacques Perrin until 1978, and after that Jacques' sons Jean Pierre and Francois Perrin have managed the family property.

Beaucastel is known for planting all 13 varietals allowed by AOC Law: Grenache, Mouvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, Vaccarese, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc and Roussane. The rocky terrain absorbs the sunlight and holds the heat from the sun and transfers the heat to the vines after sunset. Beaucastel farms their property using sustainable farming techniques and, in fact, was one of the first estates in Chateauneuf du Pape to begin to farm their vineyards organically. Given a solid 97, the Robert Parker review reads as follows:

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Bottled only a week before my visit, I was blown away by how well Beaucastel's 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape was showing. It's full-bodied, creamy, lush and rich, with layers of raspberry fruit, garrigue and spice that unfold across a seamless palate. No doubt it will go through cycles of being open and closed throughout its lifespan, but it would be a mistake to simply order a case, put it into storage and forget about it without trying one first and swooning over the sheer lusciousness and youthful complexity. (JC) (8/2018)

Exploring Italy from Asti to Abruzzo

2016 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne

From north to south, Italy has so much to offer the world of wine and this weekend Francos Wine Merchants will have three Italian offerings at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us on Saturday October 6th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour three Italian red wines, two from the Abruzzo region and one from up north in the region of Asti. Two regions, three wines and a variety of autumn menus that can be used as a pairing, these wines will not disappoint.

First we will start up north in the small medieval village of Castiglione Falletto in the province of Asti where the Vietti winery is now being operated by the fourth generation of that family, and where we find the 2016 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne ($16.99). Made from 100% Barbera grape, this wine has a stunning ruby/purple color that is accompanied by ripe cherry aromas with hints of spice. A medium bodied red wine with refreshing acidity, this wine is well balanced with slight integration of oak, good complexity and a long, soft finish. While it can be paired with many pasta, chicken or pork dishes, this wine would shine with a traditional Coniglio alla Sarda.

2015 La Valentina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo "Spelt"

From there we travel down to the region of Abruzzo where we find the two other wines we will be pouring. First we come to the town of Spoltore where we have the 2015 La Valentina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo "Spelt" ($21.99). You are first impressed with an intense purple color and aromas of pomegranate and licorice which are followed by a velvety taste and polished tannins that make this wine so voluptuous and savory. The La Valentina Spelt will definitely help stave off those cold winter nights so our suggestion is to find your favorite meat Bolognese recipe and pop open the cork.

2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

Next up in the region is the 2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99). This small estate bottled wine has a bright ruby red color with a bouquet of violet and tobacco. This wine with its attractive nose of red cherry is what you are looking for to warm up an easy mid-week meal. Made from the flagship grape of Abruzzo, the Montepulciano from the Masciarelli Estate is uniquely round, rich and drinkable. Medium in weight with flavors of black currant and a little spice, this wine would pair perfectly with anything from a simple Mushroom Marinara to a more full flavored dish such as Bucatini all'Amatriciana.

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday October 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne ($16.99), the 2015 La Valentina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo "Spelt" ($21.99) and the 2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99).

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these wines or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Last Call for 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal

2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal

Summer is winding down and so is our supply of the most popular $30 wine in our inventory. The 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal ($29.99) started out as a 75 case stacking and has dwindled down to less than 10 cases. So if you have not had the opportunity to taste this wine this may be your last chance.

Please join us on Saturday September 29th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the last of the 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal ($29.99). In our inventory since last spring with the arrival of our 2015 Bordeaux shipment, unlike many of the other 2015 Bordeaux, this wine is drinking beautifully right now and is a perfect wine to consider for the holidays which will soon be up on us.

The left bank in Bordeaux (which would be the southern bank of the river) is home to several growing regions including the appellation of Pessac-Léognan (in the region of Graves), home to Chateau de Fieuzal. The 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal ($29.99) is the second label to their famous Bordeaux and was such a great value that we purchased 75 cases and put it out at this very sharp price. Over the past few years L'Abeille de Fieuzal has developed a strong identity of its own. Like most wines in this region, it is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine offers aromas of fresh red fruit such as strawberry, raspberry and cherry which carry on through to the palate. Oak is present but subtle and discreet. The weight and length on this wine is gorgeous and combined with its structured richness makes it the perfect wine for your fall menus.

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Also on Saturday we will be pouring the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99). Made from 100% Gamay grape and not only made in a natural fashion with no pesticides or added sulfites, but if the temperature rises you can put both of these wines in the fridge for about 20 minutes as they can be enjoyed with a slight chill on them without muting the true flavor of the Gamay grape. His Cote de Brouilly is light bodied with elegant fruit and earthly minerality.

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday September 29th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal ($29.99) and the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99).

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these wines or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

2014 Grgich Hill Chardonnay — Short on vowels, long on flavor

2014 Grgich Hills Chardonnay

Napa Valley is home to some our most loved wines and Grgich Hills Estates is no exception. Francos Wine Merchants just received a shipment of the 2014 Grgich Hills Chardonnay ($44.99) and we will be showcasing this wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, September 22nd 1:00-5:00PM.

Miljenjo "Mike" Grgich founded his namesake winery in 1977 and became immediately known as "The King of Chardonnay". Jumping to present day Mike, along with his daughter Violet and his nephew Ivo Jeramaz are committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability and farm their estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides and rely on wild yeast fermentation to handcraft food-friendly wines that are balanced and elegant.

Enter their 2014 Grgich Hills Chardonnay ($44.99) as one of their star players. Their Chardonnay vines grow in their American Canyon and Carneros vineyards in the southern tip of Napa Valley, near San Pablo Bay. The cool maritime breezes and morning fog allow the grapes to slowly ripen, producing complex flavors and a natural acidity that is impossible to achieve in warmer climates. The 2014 weather was on the dry side which produced small berries packed with concentrated flavors. The wine displays ripe peach, mango and tropical flavors. A note of minerality means this wine can be enjoyed with fresh seafood as well as roasted chicken and grilled pork.

2018 Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday September 22nd 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2014 Grgich Hills Chardonnay ($44.99). Also on Saturday, we will be pouring the 2018 Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre ($22.99) — a delightful Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley.

All the Way with Coudoulet — 2016 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone

2016 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone

Nothing welcomes autumn like the wines of the Rhone. Hearty and robust, they are the type of wine you want to serve when you start to uncover your Fall recipes such as stews, goulash and ragouts. The 2016 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($28.99) is one of the wines you should consider. We will be pouring this wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, September 15th 1:00-5:00PM.

After Pierre Perrin, Beaucastel was managed by Jacques Perrin until 1978, and after that Jacques' sons Jean Pierre and Francois Perrin have manages the family property.

The Coudoulet vineyard which produces the 2016 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($28.99) is immediately adjacent to the Beaucastel which produces their famous Chateauneuf du Pape. Their property extends to a tiny dirt road which acts as a border between the two properties. The same limestone plateau spreads across both properties with its clay, layer of sandstone and great number of rounded rocks known as "galets" making up the terroir. The wine is so incredibly long and rich you will find it difficult to believe it is a Cotes du Rhone. The cepage is Grenache 30%, Mouvedre 30%, Syrah 20% and Cinsault 20% from vines that are over 80 years old. Flavors of blackberries and spice abound in the glass and Robert Parker boasts in his review that it is potentially the best Coudoulet ever produced.

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday September 15th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($28.99).

Don't be a Bore, Serve Cahors

2017 Chateau de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

Nowadays when you say "Malbec" most people think of Argentina but it is in France where this grape originated, specifically from the region of Cahors in Southern France. Francos Wine Merchants just received shipment of a classically styled Malbec from this region that we will be pouring this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us Saturday, September 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) from Cahors. While Malbec has played a supporting role in Bordeaux as a blending grape for years, it is when you move to Southwest France, particularly the Cahors appellation, where this grape has flourished. In both Cahors as well as the Loire, this grape is often referred to as "Cot" by the locals.

As we travel to Cahors we find winemaker Julien Ilbert toiling among his vines that have been in his family for generations. His 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) is one of his prized efforts. Often referred to as the "Black Grape," this grape's thin skin is what makes it so susceptible to climate and soil conditions. In the terroir of Cahors regions this grape produces a very dark color and tremendous flavors of blackberry fruit. This wine in particular shows off these berry flavors mostly due to the limestone soil that is widespread throughout the region. Unlike its beefier South American cousins, this Malbec is light in style, yet still big in flavor and would be a perfect pairing for a Flat Iron Steak or even a more full-flavored Rib-Eye.

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday September 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99). It will be a great opportunity to taste a wine from the region where it originated.

You Say Burgundy and So Do We

2016 Jean Manciat Macon-Charnay

Labor Day is here which signifies the unofficial end of Summer but those of us who hate to see it go hope that the seasonal temperatures will last a few more weeks. But with a three-day weekend looming, Francos Wine Merchants has two fabulous wines from Burgundy that are perfect to tote along to any holiday weekend gathering both of which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday September 1st 1:00-5:00PM.

First up we have the 2016 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay ($16.99) — an excellent example of white Burgundy from the Mâconnais. When Jean Manciat took over his family estate he replanted extensively but kept as many of the old vines as possible. Jean Manciat's vines are grown sustainably on just 9 hectares of land and produce low yields of intensely flavored grapes. Manciat's philosophy of natural farming extends to his cellars, where the wine is made using only the grape's natural yeast to best express terroir. Maturing in stainless steel best preserves the vibrant fruit characteristic of Mâcon-Charnay and helps express the fruity, floral aromas and flinty minerality that characterize the best Chardonnay in the region.

2015 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Remaining in the Burgundy region but focusing on the red wines, we have the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99). In 1731, Michel Bouchard founded Bouchard Pere & Fils. While they are known for some of the most famous wines in Burgundy, their simple Reserve Bourgogne Pinot Noir shows off its elegance right from the start with the bright ruby color in the glass. There is no denying that the old world nose, classic to true Burgundies, is present here. Nuances of cherry and plum rise up to the nose, and once on the palate, the wine's red fruit core meshes well with the flavor of wood spice and strong limestone minerality which is all balanced out by the wine's excellent acidity.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday September 1st, 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2016 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay ($16.99) and the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99).

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

2017 La Val Albariño & Taste of the Town Stroll

2018 La Val Albarino

The 8th Annual "Taste of the Town Stroll" is this Thursday, August 23rd and we welcome you to join us. This annual event involves numerous different participating stores and restaurants and benefits the New Canaan Food Pantry. Francos Wine Merchants will be participating by offering a Wine Tasting featuring one of Spain's most celebrated white wines, the 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99).

Please join us Thursday night, August 23rd from 6:00-8:00PM as we pour this wonderful wine which is perfect for the remaining summer nights left in the season.

Traveling thru Spain's Northwest region you find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas. There, a very young and well respected winemaker named Jose Maria Ureta has made himself very well-known and the wine community is definitely taking notice. The 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99) is one of the prized wines from this 150 acre vineyard and it should be noted that La Val produces this wine strictly from grapes grown on this estate. Dry on the palate, this wine offers up zesty flavors of lemon and Anjou pear. The steamy August heat often beckons for a wine that is refreshing with a clean and racy style and the Albariño grape definitely delivers. So if you are grilling some halibut, making your favorite lemon/chicken pasta or simply enjoying a cold shrimp salad, this is the wine you should be pouring.

Taste of the Town Stroll is a "food-raiser" for the New Canaan Food Pantry, and the New Canaan Chamber will collect donations during the event. Activities and culinary delights will be available at each of the participating venues throughout downtown, along with prizes and raffles. Details for this event and how to donate to the New Canaan Food Pantry can be found on the New Canaan Chamber website.

Saturday Wine Tasting: For those of you unable to attend the Taste of the Town Stroll, we will also be pouring the 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99) again at our weekly wine tasting on Saturday August 25th from 1:00-5:00PM.

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order this wine or any of the wines we taste by clicking any wine link in our email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Got a Minet? 2017 Régis Minet Vieilles Vignes Pouilly Fumé

2017 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes

Importer Kermit Lynch is once again showing us the wonders of the Loire Valley. While he was raised in San Luis Obispo CA, his name has become synonymous with French and Italian wines. For those who are not familiar with his wines, he has concentrated his success on small artisan producers all who work in some sort of natural and/or organic fashion.

2017 Régis Minet Pouilly Fumé Vieilles Vignes ($21.99) is one of the stars in the Kermit Lynch Portfolio. In 1976 Régis Minet continued the tradition of winemaking started by his grandfather Robert at the beginning of the 20th century by founding his domaine and soon partnering with Kermit Lynch. Régis' vineyards sit at 750 feet, surrounded by hills on the far east of the Loire River, and centered proudly on the prized Kimmeridgian soil found in this part of the Loire. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grape, this gem from the appellation of Pouilly Fumé, is quite distinctive from the neighboring villages, mostly due to this unique clay/limestone soil. This wine has a mouth-watering acidity, depth of flavor and fleshy texture that help make it so unique and a perfect pairing for so many of your seafood dishes. So whether you are serving Grilled Swordfish with a fresh parsley/mint gremolata, Grilled Halibut with a seasonal corn salsa or perhaps you are simply the recipient of a bushel of fresh littleneck clams — this is the wine that will have your guests coming back for more.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, August 18th from 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 Régis Minet Pouilly Fumé Vieilles Vignes ($21.99).

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these or any of the wines we taste by clicking any wine link in our email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

2017 Costamolino Vermentino Argiolas — Your Summer Sardinian Escape

2017 Costamolino Vermentino Argiolas

Sardinia, with its miles of coastline, sandy beaches and mountainous interior, is also home to many native grapes including Vermentino. This white wine made from the Vermentino grape is a favorite on this island in the Mediterranean sea and Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring the 2017 Costamolino Vermentino Argiolas ($14.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, August 11th 1:00-5:00PM.

First a little background on the vineyard. Founded in 1938 by Antonio Argiolas the estate now has 600 acres of vines and is run by Franco and Giuseppe Argiolas along with Winemaker Mariano Murru. The grapes are usually harvested in August or September and are vinified in stainless-steel tanks which helps retain its nice acidity. It is the quality and care by the Argiolas family that makes them Sardinia's leading producer which all shows thru in their wines.

The 2017 Costamolino Vermentino Argiolas ($14.99) is named for the area on Sardinia (Costamolino) where the Vermentino grape is grown. A very aromatic white grape variety, Vermentino thrives in the Mediterranean climate of Sardinia. This wine first greets you with aromas of pine and mint along with flavors of ripe stone fruit and a touch of citrus. This wine would pair nicely with a variety of summer menus from a Grilled Sea Bass with Lemon/Garlic butter to a simple Shrimp Salad with Key Lime Vinaigrette or even a Scallop Linguini with Meyer Lemon and toasted Pignoli nuts.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, August 11th from 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 Costamolino Vermentino Argiolas ($14.99).

2015 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon — Another offering from Loire

2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges"

While we have been showcasing white wines from the Loire such as Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, we need to remember that the same region brings us some fabulous red wines as well. Francos Wine Merchants has one such wine that we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us this Saturday, August 4th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99).

Bernard Baudry is one of most renown producers in the appellation of Chinon. After completing his studies at the Viticultural School in Beaune, Bernard returned to the Loire Valley and started to consult. By 1975 he had purchased his first two hectares of land and over the years the domaine has grown to twenty five hectares and he has now been joined by his son Matthieu. The Baudrys work vineyards composed of gravel, sand, limestone, silica, and clay. The variations of terroir and vinification methods make their wines unique and distinct. The 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99) is made from 100% Cabernet Franc from vines with an average age of 30-35 years old. Practicing organic farming methods and wild-yeast fermentation, this wine shows a deep red/black color and beautiful aromas of ripe red and black fruits with hints of earth, black pepper and violet. The palate is dense and sapid with supple strawberry and blackberry liqueur and mineral flavors lifted by bright acidity. The fruit is quite ripe but the wine is well balanced at 12.5% alcohol. So whether you are grilling a simple skirt steak, a tasty petit filet or full flavored Ribeye, this wine will not only pair perfectly with your favorite steak, but its firm structure and modest weight also pairs well with summer temperatures by not being too weighty for the warmer weather.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, August 4th from 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99).

Calling all Lobsters — 2017 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

2017 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

As the ocean's most beloved crustacean, the lobster, nears its peak season, you need to consider the perfect wine with which to pair. So whether you are making a traditional Maine Lobster Boil, or perhaps fancy it up by preparing Stuffed Lobster or just keeping it simple with a Lobster roll, you want to consider the 2017 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting Saturday, July 28th 1:00-5:00PM.

Hippolyte Reverdy's family has been making wine in the quaint village of Verdigny (a commune of Sancerre in the eastern Loire) for generations. Shortly after World War II Hippolyte and his three sons began bottling small quantities under their own label to satisfy the increasing demands from Paris. Hippolyte was joined by his son Michel in 1971 and in 1983 they joined forces with Importer Kermit Lynch. Shortly thereafter Hippolyte Reverdy passed on and Michel had to deal with the untimely death of his two brothers and was left with his mother to bear the responsibility to run the vineyard his own. Today Michel farms fourteen hectares of vineyards on his own and Kermit Lynch says that since Michel has taken the reins Reverdy has since become the benchmark domaine of our day.

2017 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99) made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc has an enticing lemon yellow color and a crisp mineral driven flavor with notes of citrus and floral/flinty aromas on the nose. In true Kermit Lynch fashion the vineyards of Hippolyte Reverdy see no pesticides, the yeasts are of indigenous nature and no extra sulfites added. Very pure and fresh, this wine broadens itself once on the palate and you literally taste it from the moment it hits your lips until if trails off the back of your tongue. Oysters, clams or lobster create singular harmony with this fabulous effort.

2017 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes

If you have had your fill of Lobsters (is that possible?) and are moving over to Scallops, Swordfish or Sea Bass, you should consider the 2017 Régis Minet Pouilly Fumé Vieilles Vignes ($21.99). Also from the Loire Valley and a Kermit Lynch Import, it is also 100% Sauvignon Blanc yet has its own distinctive qualities from its neighbor of Sancerre. This wine has a mouth-watering acidity and a depth of flavor that is a perfect pairing for meatier fish. If you are a lover of wines from the Loire, this one will have you racing back for more.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, July 28th from 1:00-5:00PM as we taste both the 2017 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99) and the 2017 Régis Minet Pouilly Fumé Vieilles Vignes ($21.99).

Aix Marks the Spot — 2017 Aix Rosé

2018 Aix Rose

As summer nears its peak there is always a wild scramble on the weekend either after a day of golf, relaxing at the beach, or even doing yardwork to invite people over and throw together an easy meal for casual entertaining. When these impromptu events transpire we often need a casual wine with which to pair and Francos Wine Merchants has some choices for you.

Charred Romaine Salad with Grilled Shrimp, Chicken Kabobs with a Chili-Lime Sauce, Grilled Swordfish with Lemon/Pepper Marinade, Steamed Mussels with fresh Mint — what are all these recipes missing? The perfect wine pairing. This is where the 2018 Aix Rosé ($18.99) (Pronounced "X") comes into play. With its beautifully ripe flavors of strawberry and mango, along with a hint of spice and a wonderfully crisp style, this Provence rosé is the perfect match to meld to all the flavors of summer cooking. The 130 years old winery of Maison Saint Aix is one of the largest domains in the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence. This vineyard sits on a plateau at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level. These remarkable 75 hectares are what helps produce a consistent wine year after year. The warm 2017 growing season produced pristine growing conditions for the Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault — the grapes used to produce the Aix Rosé.

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

If perhaps you are thinking about Grilled Balsamic Skirt Steak, Garlic Grilled Flank Steak or some delicious Chili-Rubbed Ribeyes then you may want to consider the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99). This is an incredible Pinot Noir from one of France's best winemakers. Brun makes his wines in a natural fashion, with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and with no additives applied in the winery. This delicious red wine is vibrant and fruit-driven, but earthy, subtle, and complex and is perfect in both style and price for casual entertaining.

Le Contesse Prosecco — Making the Sidewalk Sale Sparkle

 Le Contesse Prosecco

You know it's July in New Canaan when the Annual Sidewalk Sale arrives. While the street will be full of hot deals, Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring some cold wines at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us Saturday, July 14th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Branden Hylwa, Account Manager for Murphy Distributors as he pours the Le Contesse Prosecco ($14.99). Branden has also graciously offered as a special treat to pour his 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99) as well.

The bright straw-yellow color of the Le Contesse Prosecco ($14.99) is what first draws you in with this sparkling wine. This northern Italian gem made from 100% Glera grape is rife with aromatic nuances of acacia flowers and wisteria. Tasty, well balanced and low in sulfites, this brut-styled prosecco has a dry aftertaste which makes it an excellent choice for an aperitif as well as a commendable choice for any summer get-togethers, showers and other jubilant celebrations.

2018 La Val Albarino

If any of your summer menus call for a terrific dry white wine, then you have to consider the 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99). This wine is both Estate Grown and Estate Bottled and delivers aromatic citrus fruit with hints of chalky minerality. Dry on the palate, it offers up zesty lemon and Anjou pear flavors. La Val produces its wines solely from the grapes grown on their 150 acre estate. Jose Maria Ureta is a young and extremely well respected winemaker and one definitely making his mark in Rias Baixas. So, as the summer gets into full swing and our tastes turn to wines that are refreshing with a clean, racy finish, look no further than La Val Albariño.

New Canaan Sidewalk Sale: Also happening on Saturday is is the 53rd Annual New Canaan Sidewalk Sale. For those of you not familiar with this yearly event, it begins on Friday July 13th 10:00 - 4:00PM when stores put out their merchandise on the sidewalks of town at sale prices, but the big focus is on Saturday July 14th, when Elm & Main Streets in downtown New Canaan will be blocked off from vehicular traffic and turned into a one day pedestrian mall. In addition to the stores' terrific sale prices, restaurants set up on the street serving adapted menus and there will be music and activities going on all day. This event takes place rain or shine and is a fun day for all.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order our tasting wines by clicking any wine link in our email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

A Trio of Summer Wines

2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc

Our first heatwave of the season is scheduled to arrive this weekend so it's a perfect time to escape the heat of the kitchen, fire up the grill, and enjoy the great outdoors. While you will probably put some thought into which type of foods you want to grill, you should put as much thought into the wine you want to pair, and Francos Wine Merchants has a few in mind which we will have open at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday June 30th 1:00 - 5:00PM.

Starting in France's Burgundy region we settle in the small appellation of Saint-Bris where we find the 2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc ($14.99). Hailing from Northern Burgundy, the small appellation of Saint-Bris is the only appellation where Sauvignon Blanc is allowed to grow in Burgundy. From vines grown in predominantly limestone soil, this wine has an incredible pale gold color. The bouquet offers up nuances of white fruit, which transitions into bright citrus upon aeration. Fresh and delicate in the mouth along with a touch of minerality and lively finish, this wine is going to be a perfect pairing for any white fish with Beurre Blanc sauce or lemon chicken recipe.

2016 Enrico Serafino Gavi di Gavi

Moving from France and over to Italy, we travel north to Piedmont and the region of Gavi where we find the 2016 Enrico Serafino Gavi di Gavi ($14.99). Made from Cortese grape, this wine comes from the region of Gavi from the town of Gavi (hence "Gavi di Gavi") This wine with its clean, unoaked flavor spends a good amount of time on its lees which helps develop the rich mouth-feel. With its enticing pale straw-yellow color and the floral and citrus aromas, this wine is definitely a refresher on a warm summer evening.

2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges"

The Loire has many incredible wine appellations, and while most people's thoughts turn to the white wines of the region they produce a number of red wines as well. One such wine is the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99). Another fine wine from importer Louis/Dressner, this wine is made from 100% Cabernet Franc grape from vines with an average age of 30-35 years. Like all wines imported from Louis/Dressner this wine is produced in a natural fashion. Domaine Bernard Baudry uses organic farming methods, uses wild-yeast fermentation, and no pesticides are used anywhere in their vineyards. This wine shows a deep red/black color and beautiful aromas of ripe red and black fruits with hints of earth, roast meat, black pepper and violet. The palate is dense and sapid with supple strawberry and blackberry liqueur and mineral flavors lifted by bright acidity. The fruit is quite ripe but the wine is well balanced and the modest 12.5% alcohol makes this wine extremely easy to drink when the mercury is on the rise. To sum it up briefly, Cabernet Franc has all the qualities of heftier red wines — rich fruit, good body, firm tannins — but without being hugely heavy or weighty for these warm summer days.

So please join us Saturday, June 30th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we taste these excellent Summer Wines.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order our tasting wines by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

An Array of Rosé

2018 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rose 2018 Aix Rose

We have been treated to some Summer heat this week, and there is no better way to counter the heat than with the refreshing taste of Rosé. Francos Wine Merchants has a selection of Rosé wines that we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday June 23rd 1:00-5:00PM.

Our selection of Rosé will start off in Provence where we find the 2018 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rosé ($17.99). This rosé is made with the little known Tibouren grape almost exclusively found in Provence. Pale pink in color with a clean nose of citrus combined with fresh acidity makes for an incisive and lively palate that is most refreshing on a warm summer afternoon. Staying in Provence we also have the 2018 Aix Rosé ($18.99). A classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault gives this rosé fruit aromas of strawberry and mango. A perennial warm weather favorite, the Aix Rosé pairs perfectly with seafood or grilled chicken.

2017 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendomois Rose 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rose

Moving over to the Loire, we find the 2017 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($13.99). The Pineau d'Aunis grape, which is native to the region, produces a very dry rosé with hints of strawberry and citrus. Staying in the Loire but moving to the appellation of Sancerre, we find the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosé ($26.99). Produced by Michel Reverdy and imported by Kermit Lynch, this Sancerre Rosé is comprised entirely of Pinot Noir Grape from vines with an average age of 30 years. Its invitingly pink color hints at aromas of soft red fruit and flavors of strawberry with noted minerality. While delicate in color, this wine has a bold flavor and would pair perfectly with grilled red meats as well as grilled white meats.

2018 Wolffer Estate Rose

Leaving France and coming back to the states and out to Long Island, NY we land at Wolffer Estate Vineyard and the 2018 Wolffer Estate Rosé ($17.99). The bright salmon-copper color is what first entices you with this elegant wine. The floral and flinty aromas segue seamlessly to the peach and apricot flavors on the palate. While this wine can be enjoyed on its own, the blend of 50% Merlot and 26% Chardonnay (with the balance made up of Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Gewurztraminer) gives it the ability to shine with any number of your summer menus.

So please join us Saturday, June 23rd 1:00-5:00PM for our Rosé Tasting.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order our tasting wines by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page. You can browse our entire selection of Rosé by clicking on our Refreshing Summer Rosé link.

By 1980 Rombauer Vineyards was established and 38 years later the winery remains owned and operated by first, second and third generation members of the family.

2016 Alta Mora Bianco — Sicily's Secret

2016 Alta Mora Etna Bianco

Memorial Day Weekend is here which marks the unofficial start of summer. While the temperatures may not quite be up to speed, Francos Wine Merchants is ready with a selection of wines perfect for Summer entertaining and we will be pouring one such wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday May 26th 1:00-5:00PM.

Let us introduce to you the 2016 Alta Mora Etna Bianco ($24.99) hailing from Etna, Sicily. Brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano have taken the native grape variety called Carricante and crafted it into a delicious, crisp, refreshing white wine. Their vineyard is located on the slopes of the famous active volcano on Sicily, Mount Etna, on roughly 8 hectares of vines at an altitude of about 600-800 meters above sea level. The name Alta Mora translates as "tall black" representing the great height of the vineyard and the rich, dark, black volcanic soil which feed the vines that have an average age of fifteen years. This allows the Carriante grape to ripen fully and give us a wine that is tempered and elegant.

Upon being poured in the glass, the 2016 Alta Mora Etna Bianco ($24.99) first greets you with its bright lemon yellow color. The wine immediately offers up subdued aromas that suggest Spanish broom and chamomile flower. Reflecting the nose, the lean, linear palate is also restrained, offering citrus, lemon zest and a hint of beeswax. One might almost mistake this wine for a Sancerre or other Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire as it has many of the same characteristics of that region. It is fresh with great minerality and is a great classic to pair with your favorite seafood dishes.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, May 26th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste 2016 Alta Mora Etna Bianco ($24.99). Being Memorial Day Weekend you may also want to check out our Summer Rosé selection as well as our collection of Tequila, both perfect for your holiday gatherings.

2015 Bouchard Pinot Noir & 2017 William Fevre Chablis — the Perfect Entrance into Summer

2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2015 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Even though Mother Nature seems to be arguing with us, summer is just around the corner. Now that the covers are off the patio furniture and our pots and planters have sprung to life, it's time to get out by the grill and enjoy these wonderful weeks ahead. Francos Wine Merchants has two terrific French Burgundies in inventory that are Perfect to keep on hand for those last minute gatherings on the patio. We will have both of these wines open this Saturday May 19th 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Starting off in the appellation of Chablis we have the 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99). This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. In addition to the very elegant bouquet, this wine shows flinty flavors of wet stone and a beautifully clean finish. Any shellfish — especially one with a briny quality — will pair exceptionally well with this wine as will almost any chicken recipe that has tarragon or lemon thyme as one of the main herbs. The clean and crisp finish of this wine is just what you are looking for as those hot day loom on the horizon.

Staying right in Burgundy, we move over to a fabulous red, the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99). Salmon on the grill, a well marbled Rib-eye or a simple Flat Iron Steak are what this wine whispers when opened. Once again, as the warmer months arrive, it's time to put away those heavier and weightier wines and go with wines that match the season.

2015 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir

Wine Dinner: Francos Wine Merchants is hosting a Wine Dinner on Monday May 21st at 7:00PM at The Elm Restaurant in New Canaan featuring the wines of Domaine Serene. 2015 Chateau Gloria - An Introduction to the Fabulous 2015 Bordeaux Vintage

2015 Chateau Gloria Saint-Julien

The 2015 Bordeaux have arrived! There has been much anticipation for the arrival of this vintage which was a star on both the left and right bank in Bordeaux. These wines arrived here this week at Francos Wine Merchants and we will have one of them open at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us this Saturday, May 12th 1:00-5:00PM as we celebrate the 2015 Bordeaux Vintage with the 2015 Château Gloria Saint-Julien ($58.99) from the appellation of Saint-Julien. This wine first dazzles you with its deep garnet-purple color as you pour it into your glass. You are next treated to a bouquet of dark cherries with hints of cedar as you swirl the wine and the aroma rises. Once in the mouth you will find it to be well balanced, clean and pure with fine tannins. The flavors of dark plums and blackberries add to its solid core along with a chewy and earthy finish. Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) along with Merlot (27%) with the balance made up of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this is perhaps one of the more approachable Saint Julien wines of this vintage and should drink nicely over the next 20 years.

This is a terrific opportunity to see what the incredible 2015 vintage has to offer and there are some very good opportunities to buy into this vintage. Be sure to see our entire selection by following the 2015 Bordeaux link here or on our Home Page.

Battle of the Cabs — 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal & 2015 Bella Union Napa Valley

2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal

Cabernet Sauvignon can definitely be divided up into two camps, the subtle refined French Cabernet and the bold, muscular California styled Cabernet. Francos Wine Merchants will have two such wines open at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, May 5th 1:00-5:00PM and you can see for yourself if you prefer the finesse of Bordeaux or the boldness of Napa.

The wines of the left bank in Bordeaux (which would be the southern bank of the Seine) is home to several growing regions including the appellation of Pessac-Léognan (in the region of Graves) which is home to Chateau de Fieuzal. The weight and length on this wine is gorgeous and combined with its structured richness makes it the perfect wine for when you fire up the grill for the season.

2015 Bella Union Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Traveling back across the pond and across the country to California's Napa Valley is where you will find our next wine, the 2015 Bella Union Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($69.99). Bella Union is the old Bella Oaks site that once graced the Heitz Portfolio and is now part of the Far Niente family. The blend of 89% Cabernet with the remaining 11% being Malbec, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc helps create the Bordeaux-like style of this wine. Treated to aromas of black cherry and cassis, rich flavors of dark plum and a layered progression of warm, toasty oak, this wine with its supple tannins and bright acidity is the wine you want to consider to inaugurate the grilling season.

Saturday is also when two of harbingers of spring collide; we have the running of the Kentucky Derby as well as the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. If you are having people over or attending a Derby or Cinco de Mayo party, you will want to check out our vast collection of Bourbon for your Mint Juleps. You may also want to consider our Small Batch American Whiskey as well as our selection of Tequila, for those of you planning on mixing up some margaritas or looking for that smooth tequila on which to sip.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, May 5th 1:00-5:00PM as taste both the 2015 L'Abeille de Fieuzal ($29.99) and the 2015 Bella Union Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($69.99).

An Afternoon in Germany — The Wines of Rheinhessen & Mosel

2016 Gunderloch Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett 2016 Gunderloch Riesling Trocken

The wondrous wines of Germany are often passed over by people because they are locked into a belief that the wines are singular in style. But here is your chance to taste three fabulous wines side by side, each with their own identity and form this weekend at Francos Wine Merchants.

Please join us this Saturday, April 28th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome Ms. Ana Bermudez of The Winebow Group as she pours a selection of wines from famed German Importer Rudi Wiest from the regions of Rheinhessen and Mosel.

Traveling slightly southwest of Frankfurt brings you to the region of Rheinhessen where in 1890 Carl Gunderloch founded the estate by investing his fortune into the top vineyards of the "Roter Hang" (red slope) area of the Rheinhessen appellation. Five generations later Agnes Gunderlock married winemaker Fritz Hasselbach who has now bequeathed to his son Johannes this thriving estate. The first wine Ana will be pouring is the 2016 Gunderloch Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett ($21.99). Here you will find aromas of juicy peach, pear and a touch of lime that first greet you. The wine is well proportioned with flavors of grapefruit and tangerine all leading into a long, mineraly textured finish. From there we experience another one of their wines, the 2016 Gunderloch Riesling Trocken ($21.99). The aromas in this dry Riesling show off citrus, herb and smoked nuts. On the palate vivid smoky mineral notes appear along with flavors of peach. This wine is full of yellow fruit, which have great structure and fine acidity essential for aging.

2016 St Urbans Hof Bockstein Riesling Kabinett Nik Weis

From Rheinhessen we continue southwest where till we end up in the region of Mosel. Here in 1947 Weingut St. Urbans-hof was first established by Nicolaus Weis. The estate is now run by his son Hermann and daughter in law Ida who are now carrying forward his winemaking traditions. From this fabulous property we will be pouring the 2016 St Urbans Hof Bockstein Riesling Kabinett Nik Weis ($22.99). The vines are planted on the very deep south facing slopes where the water slowly drains and the evening breezes cool down the vines come nightfall. The result is an aromatic wine featuring intense minerality along with flavors of green apple, peach and Bosc pear. This all leads into a steely finish that offers notes of white stone and fresh herbs.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, April 28th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome Ms. Ana Bermudez of The Winebow Group as she pours this selection of wines from importer Rudi Wiest.

The Indispensable 2014 Chateau de Pez

2014 Chateau de Pez

While the left bank of Bordeaux is home to some of the world's most cellerable wines, it is also home to many approachable wines perfect for current drinking. The 2014 Château de Pez ($48.99) from the appellation of Saint Estephe is one of those wines.

Chateau de Pez is one of the oldest Bordeaux wine making estates in the Saint-Estephe appellation going all the way back to 1452. Like many of the vineyards in the Medoc, Chateau De Pez passed through countless owners until it was most recently purchased in 1995 by Jean-Claude Rouzaud. Blessed with good natural drainage, the estate of Chateau De Pez is planted to a vine density of 6400 vines per hectare with an average age of 25 years.

All this brings us to the 2014 Château de Pez ($48.99). The vineyard of Chateau De Pez is mostly grown to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with some Merlot and a small amount of Petit Verdot. The nose first greets you with aromas of small dark cherries and candied fruit which rise from the glass. The palate welcomes a nice medium-bodied wine with fine tannins upon entry and shows off classic Saint Estephe characteristics with rich fruit and firm core. Supple and flavorful in the mouth with impressive rich fruit, this wine is solid on the tongue while it treats you to a variety of lively flavors before the fine tannins make a reappearance again at the finish. So take a break from domestic reds and reintroduce yourself to the wines of Bordeaux.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Here is your chance to see for yourself what this wine has to offer. Please join us this Saturday April 21st 1:00-5:00PM, to taste the 2014 Château de Pez ($48.99).

Great finds from Italy & California

2016 Abbazia di Novacella Sauvignon Blanc

Looking for unusual wines can bring us to every part of the world, and this weekend Francos Wine Merchants has two gems on our Tasting Schedule; please join us this Saturday April 14th 1:00-5:00PM for our weekly Wine Tasting.

Our first wine brings you to Northern Italy to Trentino Alto Adige which is in the Italian Alps on the border of Switzerland and Austria. Dotted with medieval castles and Renaissance palaces, this region is also home to many vineyards. Here we find the 2016 Abbazia di Novacella Sauvignon Blanc ($19.99). This white wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc where the vines grow in the gravelly soil which is found throughout the region. Fermentation in both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels provides you with the tropical fruit aromas that first greet you. Once on the palate, the wine doles out ripe flavors of honeydew melon and passion fruit. All this come to a clean finish with a slight note of nectarine. So if you have one of your recipes that highlight spring vegetables such as Pasta Primavera, this wine would pair perfectly.

2014 Seventy Five The Sum

Leaving Italy and traveling back to America, we end up in St Helena, California where Tuck Beckstoffer has continued the family tradition of winemaking. Here we present the 2014 Seventy Five The Sum ($21.99). This wine is a Bordeaux blend comprised of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being made up of Syrah and Petite Syrah. Full-bodied and multilayered, this wine shows off aromas of mixed berries and dark chocolate. On the tongue, flavors of dried blackcurrant and cherry glide seamlessly across the palate while notes of raspberry and roasted coffee bring you into a long, silky finish. So look for that Grass-fed Tomahawk steak in the butcher case and open up a bottle of The Sum and you will not be disappointed.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday April 14th 1:00-5:00PM, to taste the 2016 Abbazia di Novacella Sauvignon Blanc ($19.99) and the 2014 Seventy Five The Sum ($21.99).

Newton Day — Come to Play

2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay

Newton Vineyards has been giving us quality wines since it was founded in 1977. This weekend, Francos Wine Merchants will have two of their wines from Sonoma County open at our Wine Tasting Saturday April 7th 1:00-5:00PM..

Starting off we will have from Sonoma the 2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay ($19.99) (formerly known as Newton Red Label). The 2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay ($19.99) greets you with vibrant aromas of peach and honeysuckle as soon as the wine is poured into your glass. The peach aromas follow through with your first sip and once on the tongue flavors of baked apple along with subtle oak notes become prevalent. As the wine finishes up, one cannot help but notice the nice crispness with notes of minerality as it shows off its posh finish. So this is a good choice whether you are roasting some Cornish hens flavored boldly with rosemary, or perhaps flavored more subtly and gently with tarragon or lemon thyme.

2015 Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon

Next up also from Sonoma is the 2015 Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon ($21.99) (also formerly Newton Red Label). The dark aromas of blackberry and cassis are prominent on the nose of this fabulous effort sourced from several vineyards throughout Sonoma. The dark berry aroma continues on to the palate with blueberry and boysenberry notes which are highlighted along with an ample mouthfeel. The supple tannin core and rich finish leaves you dreaming of your next sip. So whether you are pan frying a Ribeye steak in garlic butter, or standing out by the grill on a cold spring night, this is the wine with which you want to enjoy your steak.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday April 7th 1:00-5:00PM, to taste the 2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay ($19.99) and the 2015 Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon ($21.99).

Is Spring a Myth? The 2015 True Myth Cabernet

2015 True Myth Cabernet Sauvignon

Another week, another Nor'easter which, at this rate, is becoming old hat and leaves us wondering if spring will ever arrive. There is however, one positive aspect in that we still have time to enjoy our heartier menus and heartier wines. Francos Wine Merchants will be tasting two sturdy reds and a fantastic white wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday March 24th 1:00-5:00PM.

Often overlooked by those focused in on Napa, Paso Robles — located 300 miles south of Napa — also offers some terrific wines and the 2015 True Myth Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.99) is one of them. This rich yet smooth Cabernet Sauvignon from the Niven Family is loaded with elegant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, pepper, and cassis. Once on the tongue flavors of dark red fruit with hints if cedar spice, cocoa and caramelized oak are realized. This Cabernet Sauvignon is not only very approachable, but is also an excellent example of how this grape grows to the unique terrain and climate of the Central Coast. So if the snow has melted enough to get to the grill, you may want to pair this wine with your first grilled steak of the season.

2016 Vina Cobos Felino Malbec

From California, we travel down to South America to Mendoza Argentina, where the 2016 Viña Cobos Felino Malbec ($18.99) is found. Deep red in color, this Malbec displays aromas of black fruit with notes of white pepper and cloves. On the palate, flavors of licorice and chocolate coat your taste buds as the wine's elegance and balance stands firm in your mouth. The bold tannins are at the core of this wine that lead into a long and persistent finish.

2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc

But if you are stubborn and want an escape — thoughts of sitting on your patio with the warm sun shining on you and the smell of spring flowers in the air — then the 2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc ($14.99) will transport you there.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 24th 1:00-5:00pm to taste the 2015 True Myth Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.99), 2016 Viña Cobos Felino Malbec ($18.99), and the 2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc ($14.99).

2000 Fonseca Port - Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?

2000 Fonseca

After the third Nor'easter this month, it is apparent that winter intends to hold on for a bit. So why not fight fire with fire and extend the port drinking season as well? Francos Wine Merchants still has all our ports on sale including the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99) which we will be pouring at our weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, March 17th 1:00-5:00pm.

The venerable Port House of Fonseca Guimaraens was established in 1822 and is one of the standard bearers among the world's port houses. While the port house itself needs no introduction, the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99) is a "standout" vintage for them garnering a 96 rating from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Showing off a magnificent deep purple color, dense structure and intense concentration, the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99) has a reputation that cannot be surpassed. The bold, fortified flavors - blackberry, juniper berries and licorice - are all underpinned by very fine tannins, elegant texture, and just the right amount of acidity. All of these characteristics make this port one destined to be a classic.

2003 Croft Vintage Port

Do you know the Bishop of Norwich? There are many rules on the proper way to serve port, such as always passing the port to the left after pouring a glass for your neighbor to your right. The decanter (vintage port is always decanted because of the sediment) should never stop its clockwise travel around the table until all have been served. If the decanter should ever be stalled it is considered impolite to ask for it. Instead you ask the person monopolizing the decanter "Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?" If they are familiar with port etiquette they will realize their faux pas and pass the decanter along. If not and they are confused by your question you follow up by saying "He's a terribly good chap but he always forgets to pass the port." History is unclear which absentminded Bishop of Norwich is responsible for this particular rule of etiquette.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So, once again, please join us this Saturday, March 17th 1:00-5:00pm to taste the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99). Also being tasted is the 2003 Croft Vintage Port ($72.99). So be sure to stop in, and hopefully you will not be asked if you know the Bishop of Norwich!

As always, if you are unable to join us you can order this wine by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page, or browsing our complete inventory of Port.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Flower Power — Flowers Chardonnay & Pinot Noir

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Horticultural Madness is in the air with the wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery. While the tulips and daffodils are battling the snow to bloom, the savings with Flowers has definitely blossomed with two of their wines on sale this month — the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99). We will be pouring both of these wines at our weekly Wine Tasting Saturday March 10th, 1:00-5:00PM.

On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific. So if you are looking for full-flavored Chardonnay then your search begins and ends with the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99).

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry and spice representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your spring menus as the weather starts to warm.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 10th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99).

2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin

2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin

While there may be another dip in temperatures or snow storm left in this winter, it's not too early to start thinking about spring lamb recipes that are around the corner. The villages of Burgundy have many options as do the wines of Joseph Drouhin and we will be tasting one of his most outstanding wines this Saturday, March 3rd 1:00-5:00PM — the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99).

First a little background on the region and of Joseph Drouhin. Burgundy is one of the most complex winemaking regions in the world with a rich history of viticulture dating back to the first century. Seeing opportunity, in 1880, Joseph Drouhin at the youthful age of 22 settled in Beaune and put all his focus into building his reputation. His love of wine became a passion he passed down to each new generation of his family. Assembled parcel by parcel over the years, today properties of Joseph Drouhin comprise 73 hectares of vineyards in Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis. It is one of the most important domaines in Burgundy, with more than two thirds of the vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Crus. The House of Joseph Drouhin is now run by Joseph's four grandchildren who carry on the tradition started by their grandfather.

This brings us to our featured wine for the week, the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99). The village of Gevrey Chambertin almost needs no introduction as some of the most prized Burgundies hail from here. This wine of Joseph Drouhin's greets you with an intense nose of prominent fruit including dark cherry and wild blackberry that immediately rise from the glass with an underlying hint of damp earthiness. On the palate the flavors of mild spice such as nutmeg and woodsy mushroom tantalize the tongue, all brought together by the wine's delicate tannins. So whether you are eyeing that Crown Roast at the butcher or thinking about Roast Lamb season that is about to be upon us, this is the wine you want to accompany your meal.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 3rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we again sample the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99). You can see the complete list of the family's wines by clicking on the Joseph Drouhin Wines link here or on our Home Page.

2015 Masciarelli Redux

2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

In all the years we have been sending out emails, never before have we sent out an email about the same wine two weeks in a row. But the 2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) has been such a hit, we felt the need to tell you about it once again.

As usual, Presidents' Day coincides with start of school vacation and it is a quiet weekend for business. But during a three day weekend when half the population is out of town we sold 30 cases of the 2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) and we have just received another shipment this week. The wine is good, even the fragrance is unusually noticeable. The wine is mid-weight and versatile. We all come home late on occasion to a quick meal of pizza or some leftovers. Or perhaps you are throwing together a simple meal and you are looking for a casual wine to match. This wine is all that, plus it is estate bottled, delicious and priced right.

For those of you who may have missed last week's email about this wine, the region of Abruzzo is due east of Rome. Made from 100% Montepulciano, this small, estate bottled wine has a bright ruby red color and a bouquet of violets and red cherry that immediately draws you in and is only enhanced once the wine hits your palate.

The 2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) is on sale at $10.99 per bottle, but due to the incredible response to this wine we will reduce the price to $9.99 per bottle if purchased by the Case (12 bottles). This adjustment — to $119.88 for the case — will be made before your order is processed, if not shown at the time you place the order.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, February 24th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we again sample the 2016 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) ($9.99 by the case).

Annual Port Sale — Warm up your Winter

2000 Fonseca 2003 Taylor Fladgate

February is here, the ground hog has seen his shadow and 40 degree days are considered warm. But Francos Wine Merchants has a terrific suggestion on how to shake off the chill on these gray days and cold nights — a glass of Vintage Port.

First a little background on Vintage Port. Vintage Port is one of the world's great iconic wines. Vintage Port represents the very best produce of a single outstanding year. It remains in vat for only about two years and after that it is aged in the bottle. Although Vintage Ports can be enjoyed when young, they will improve for many decades in the cellar and are among the most long-lasting of all wines.

Port wine begins life in much the same way as other wines. Around mid-September, the grapes are picked and harvested by hand from a wide range of traditional grape varieties, most of them native to Portugal's Douro Valley. The best known red varieties include the Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela and Tinto Cão but in total there are around thirty types of Port grape. Most of these varieties have relatively small thick-skinned berries which produce the dense concentrated must (grape juice) needed to make Port. During fermentation about half of the natural sugar of the grape juice turns into alcohol by fermentation. At this point the wine maker starts the fortification process which is when a very clean young wine brandy is added. The addition of the spirit raises the strength of the wine to a level where the yeasts responsible for fermentation can no longer survive. The fermentation stops before all the sugar in the juice has been turned into alcohol and some of the natural sweetness of the grape is thus preserved in the finished wine.

Super Saturday Superiore — 2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba

2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Bricco Boschis Cuculo Superiore

Super Bowl Weekend is here and whether you are hosting a large party to cheer on the Eagles and/or Patriots, or just going to enjoy the game at home sporting your team's colors, Francos Wine Merchants is here to help you along.

While there are many options for food on Super Bowl Sunday, if you stray away from the traditional choices you may just enjoy our newest arrival — the 2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Bricco Boschis Cuculo Superiore ($30.99). Crafted from 100% Barbera, this wine offers fuller body, aromas and flavor than typical Barberas. So much of this can be attributed to the calcareous clay soils and west-southwest exposure of the vineyards. This particular Barbera is released a year later than its counterparts which gives it the weight, purity and balance of a wine twice its size. Garnering a solid 91+ points from Parker, this wine will be perfect if you stray away from the Chili and instead decide to braise some short ribs in tomato and serve it over Rigatoni.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday February 3rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our guest host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours the 2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Bricco Boschis Cuculo Superiore ($30.99). As always, you can read more about this wine as well as order by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Super Bowl Sunday is full of options, so if you decide to instead whip up a batch of Manhattans or perhaps an Old Fashioned to start off the party, Francos has a wide selection of Bourbon and Rye which can all be found on our Small Batch American Whiskey link. Should you decide on Nachos or to set up a Taco Bar and serve up some Margaritas, check out our selection of Tequila by using the link here or simply typing "Tequila" in the search field.

Super Bowl Sunday: Just a reminder that Francos Wine Merchants will be open 12:00-5:00PM on Super Bowl Sunday for any of your last minute Super Bowl party needs.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Warm up your Menus with 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo

2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo

While the temperature refuses to budge you can always warm up your evening with a great bottle of wine. Francos Wine Merchants recently received a shipment of the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99) and it would be a perfect match for many of your winter menus.

The history of Vietti Winery traces back to the 19th Century, but it is at the beginning of the 20th century when Vietti started bottling its own wine. Patriarch Mario Vietti in 1919 slowly transformed the family farm into a grape-growing and wine production business. By 1953 Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti's husband) cultivated and grew the Vietti Winery to one of the top-level producers in Piemonte and was one of the first wineries to export to the USA market.

Made from 100% Nebbiolo and offering a modest 13.5% alcohol, vinification of the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99) comes from different vineyards from the Langhe/Barolo area. For all intents and purposes the Vietti Perbacco is a declassified Barolo. Aged approximately 2 years in oak and blended in steel tanks prior to bottling, this wine offers up a mid-weight style perfect for food pairing. With generous fruit and spices, this wine shows complexity and elegance without giving up any of its intensity of dark fruit, spice and licorice. This wine would be the perfect choice for hearty stews, roasted red meats and aged cheeses.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, January 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99).

As always, you can read more about this wine as well as order by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

In the blink of an eye we are in mid-January and we take a turn away from the rich, full flavored meals of the holidays and instead turn to meals with a few fresh ingredients. We also make a turn with our wines looking for ones that are simple and straightforward in flavor and one such wine is one of our January Cellar Specials.

Francos Wine Merchants is always excited when a wine from winemaker Jean-Paul Brun is in stock, and currently we have his 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99).

Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing for everything from a Roast Chicken with a simple Lemon/Butter/Thyme marinade to easy mid-week meals of Baked Chicken Thighs on a simple mirepoix drizzled with a favor infused olive oil.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday January 13th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99).
