2015 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne

The wines of Jean Paul Brun are no strangers to us here at Francos; we have carried many of his wines and he never disappoints. The 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne ($21.99) is another home run from this fabulous producer. Jean Paul Brun has perfected the art of natural wine making. All of his wines are produced using no chemical pesticides or fertilizers nor are any additives applied at the winery. The results are a wine that is vibrant and fruit-driven with earthy but subtle flavors of cherry and red berries. Complex in structure, this wine has a spine of juicy acidity that lifts the red fruit flavors through the wine from start to finish. This will enable you to easily enjoy this wine with everything from burgers to steak on the grill.

2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses"

Saturday Tasting: Please join us on Saturday May 27th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne ($21.99). Also being poured is the 2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses" ($20.99). This wine is made from Cabernet Franc and has expressive dark fruit and cassis flavors; it is also a very "steak friendly" wine, perfect for any weekend barbeque you may be planning.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Rosé for May

As we make our way thru May, our list of Rosé wines has grown. There are the classically styled ones from Provence, the delicately styled ones from the Loire and bolder styled ones from California. Whatever style you prefer, Francos Wine Merchants has a selection from which to choose.

2016 Aix Rose 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendomois Rose

The ultimate expression of Provence Rosé can be found in every bottle of 2016 Aix Rosé ($17.99). With its seasonal fruit notes of strawberry and mango, this lively summer wine Aix has a pale, bright pink color, soft, ripe fruit with a hint of crisp acidity at the finish. A warm weather favorite, Aix can be paired with herb rubbed chicken or grilled salmon, as well as pasta salads with citrus dressings.

Moving north from Provence to the Loire, we find the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99). This Rosé is made from a grape variety called Pineau d'Aunis which can be found growing thoughout the Loire. Very dry with hints of strawberry and citrus and a beautifully tart finish, this Rosé, like many wines from the Loire, is a classic match for your summer seafood favorites.

2016 Lawer Estates Rose 2016 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

Traveling across the pond and then across the U.S. to California's Sonoma County we find the 2016 Lawer Estates Rosé ($17.99). Made from the Syrah grape, this Rosé is a tribute to the sustainable farming methods practiced by Lawer Estates. This wine is dark pink in color and bursting with vibrant young berry flavors while strawberry, raspberry and hints of cranberry make up the aromatics of this youthful Rosé. On those hot summer days to come, this wine would pair perfectly if you were going to grill a flank steak but wanted a more refreshing option to a red wine.

You can see a complete list of our Rosé wines on the "Refreshing Summer Rosé" link here or on our Home Page, including the Domaine Ott which just arrived today.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday May 20th from 1 to 5pm as we pour the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99), along with the 2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja ($9.99), a terrific red wine from Spain made from Tempranillo grape and perfect for your backyard BBQ meals.

Krug Grande Cuvée - A Mother's Day Tasting

Mother's Day is this weekend and we love to put out the Red Carpet for her. Whether you are serving Mom breakfast in bed, fixing her brunch, or simply want her to know that the day is all about her, there is no better way to do it than with champagne. The House of Krug has built its reputation on the fine quality Champagne that it produces and Francos Wine Merchants will have one of their champagnes open this weekend.

 Krug Grande Cuvee

Please join us Saturday May 13th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Joe Polizzi, Ambassador for Moet Hennessy, as he pours the Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99).

Since 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has embodied the utmost in excellence that Joseph Krug, founder of the House of Krug, sought to give his clients; a Champagne of extreme generosity and absolute elegance, the very best every year.

The Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99) captures your interest immediately with its deep golden color and fine vivacious bubbles. Almost instantly aromas of flowers, marzipan and gingerbread rise from the glass along with nuances of both ripe and citrus fruit. But it is on the tongue where this champagne captures your heart with its flavors of hazelnut, nougat, brioche and honey. It is the combination off all these characteristics that makes Krug one of the most sought after champagnes on any wine list.

Over 20 years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée with a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages and three different grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is assigned a six-digit number located on the back label that actually lets you go to their webpage and research the provenance of the very bottle you are drinking.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday, May 13th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome our host, Mr. Joe Polizzi, Ambassador for Moet Hennessy, as he pours and educates you on the Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99).

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

2015 La Val Albariño - Break into Summer

Traveling to North West Spain you will find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas that is home to many vineyards and wines, but mostly Albariño. Francos Wine Merchants has one that we recently came across and we will be pouring it at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 La Val Albarino

Please join us this Saturday May 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99). Established in 1985, Bodegas La Val produces its wines solely from their estate grown grapes. Winemaker Jose Maria Ureta keeps a careful eye on the 150 acres of Albariño in this typically very humid and rainy climate; hence the use of the pergola system which elevates the grape clusters, allowing more sun for ripening and also allowing air to circulate underneath the vines. Albariño is a thick-skinned grapes wich allows it to grow and prosper in this damp, maritime climate. The result of all this is a wine that shows aromas of lemon, melon and apple along with fresh green herbs. In the mouth this wine is fresh and zesty with notes of citrus and a touch of refreshing minerality followed by a long, clean, racy finish. As the warmer days approach, this wine will pair perfectly with almost any sword or white fish as well as a simple cold pasta salad with a lemon dressing. This wine would also be a good pairing for your favorite fish taco recipe.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Also on Saturday, we will be pouring the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99). Jean Paul has two plots of 50 year old vines that grow on this south-east facing in the Côte de Brouilly. Here the Gamay grape thrives in the granitic soil and produces a wine with dark berry fruit and lots of minerality. The exceptional, pretty aroma of fresh strawberries and raspberries is extremely floral, which leads into a very ripe palate that is very well-balanced. Jean-Paul's Côte is a medium bodied wine that is smooth, fresh and round. The low 12.5% alcohol allows the fresh flavors of this wine to show through without taking away from its live, energetic and vivid characteristics.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday, May 6th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we sample the 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99) and the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99).

Loire Valley Wine Tasting

The Loire Valley offers us so many choices from Sancerre to Chinon to Muscadet, and Francos Wine Merchants has three Loire wines that we will be pouring this weekend at our Saturday Tasting. Please join us Saturday April 29th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome back one of our favorite hosts, Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours from his portfolio.

2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendomois Rose 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Amphores Chateaumeillant Rose

Alex will have two Rosé wines from Henri Bourgeois that he will be pouring, starting out with the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99) which is made from a rare grape variety called Pineau d'Aunis. This grape is found only in the Loire and produces a Rosé that is very dry with hints of strawberry and citrus with a beautifully tart finish. Also from Henri Bourgeois we have the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Amphores Chateaumeillant Rosé ($13.99). This Rosé is made from Gamay grape and you are immediately presented with its bouquet of wild berry and red cherry. When served with the perfect chill, the bright acidity will stimulate the tongue as it eases off into a perfectly dry finish. While enjoyable on their own, being from the Loire either of these wines will be perfect for your summer seafood recipes.

2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses"

Completing our loop around the Loire we come to the village of Chinon and the 2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses" ($20.99). The vines on this plot are all around 50 years old, growing on a very steep slope with a chalk/limestone base. The expressive flavors of dark fruit and cassis are evened out with the terrific mineral content and good acidity known throughout the Loire. This wine spends 2-3 years in oak which goes a long way in softening the tannins. Earthy with hints of orange zest, the mineral complexity will guide you directly into a superb and smooth finish.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, April 29th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons and sample the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99), the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Amphores Chateaumeillant Rosé ($13.99) and the 2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses" ($20.99).

Organic Wines for an Earth Day Tasting

Earth Day is Saturday and among the selection of Natural, Biodymanic and Organic wines we carry at Francos Wine Merchants, we have selected two that we will be pouring this weekend. Join us on Saturday, April 22 (Earth Day) from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour these two wines.

2015 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

Now that the weather has started to warm up, sometimes a crisp white wine comes to mind and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) is such a wine. Marc Ollivier of Domaine de la Pépière is a winemaker who has a primary goal of making wines simply. The terrior of his Gras Moutons vineyard is mostly clay and amphibolite stones which shows through in this wine. Very bright and lively, this wine has aromas of lemon, almond and pear. The expressive palate shows off flavors of white fruit, mild herbal flavors all within a ripe core and firm acidity. Loire Valley wines go hand in hand with both fish and shellfish and this effort from Marc Ollivier is no exception. With summer around the corner, this is the wine you want to stock up on to carry you through the warmer months.

2014 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Moving east from the Loire, we end up in Burgundy where in 1731 Michel Bouchard founded Bouchard Pere & Fils. While they are known for some of the most famous wines in Burgundy, the 2014 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99) — a Pinot Noir — shows off its elegance right from the start with the bright ruby color in the glass. There is no denying that the old world nose, classic to true Burgundies, is present here. Nuances of cherry and plum rise up to the nose, and once on the palate, the wine's red fruit core meshes well with the flavor of wood spice and strong limestone minerality which is all balanced out by the wine's excellent acidity. Salmon on the grill, a well marbled Rib-eye or a simple Flat Iron Steak are what this wine whispers when opened. Once again, as the warmer months arrive, it's time to put away those heavier and weightier wines and go with wines that match the season.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, April 22nd 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2014 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99).

'14 David Phinney "Disciples" & '15 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc - Wines for your Spring Menus

Now that we have gotten a taste of Spring, we can start thinking about our spring menus and the wines with which to pair with them. Francos Wine Merchants has two such wines — both from California's Napa Valley — that we will be pouring at our Saturday Tasting this Saturday, April 15th 1:00-5:00PM.

2015 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc

We first start out at Spottswoode Estate where we are pleased to offer the 2015 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($39.99). Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery is one of Napa Valley's great family-owned wineries started by Jack and Mary Novak in 1972. Their 2015 Sauvignon Blanc by winemaker Aron Weinkauf is a complex and richly textured wine with a vivacious acidity and a dazzling aroma of white peach, lemon grass and wet stone. So bring on the oysters or bay scallops because this expressive and balanced wine would make a perfect pairing with its crisp minerality and long, textured finish.

2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel

Spring Lamb is something that is on everyone's menu. Often accompanied by flavorful herbs such as rosemary and garlic, the wine you choose should be one that can pair nicely with both the piquancy of the aromatics as well as from the meat itself. The 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99) from wine guru David Phinney (of "Prisoner" fame) with its robust flavors is almost tailor made for lamb. The dark ruby color and the deep, rich, complex palate mesh perfectly with the hardy flavors that accompany most lamb dishes as well as other full-flavored meats such as Chateaubriand. This wine is comprised of 93% Zinfandel with 7% Petite Sirah added for complexity, giving you a rich wine of untamed berries and a long nuanced finish leaving you wanting more.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, April 15th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($39.99) and the 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99).

Come Taste 2015 Lafon Viré-Clessé - Certified Organic and Biodynamic

The region of Burgundy has been bringing us some of the world's most famous wines and Francos Wine Merchants has been diligent about seeking out some of the best winemakers from the best regions. We have come across a terrific White Burgundy that recently arrived in our inventory, and we will be pouring it this weekend.

2015 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Vire - Clesse

Please join us this Saturday, April 8th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours the 2015 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé ($36.99).

Founded in 1999 when the Lafon family purchased a domaine in the Maconnais renaming it Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, followed by another purchase a few years later, so that by 2003 they had amassed about 14 hectares producing seven different wines in all including Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé.

The entire operation is under the supervision of Dominique Lafon with winemaker Caroline Gon at his side. Having great faith in the hidden potential of their land and wanting to showcase the true flavor of both the fruit and terrior, their wines are now certified organic and they practice biodynamic farming methods.

The 2015 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé ($36.99) is 100% Chardonnay and along with its modest 13.5% alcohol shows off a bouquet of poached pear and apple. The wine's well-balanced acidity and minerality holds firm in the mouth and gradually tapers off to a delicate finish. A roasted capon or chicken seasoned with lemon and thyme would be a perfect pairing for this wine.

Saturday Tasting: So please join this Saturday, April 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours the 2015 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé ($36.99).

Come Taste the Simple Pleasures of Burgundy and Bordeaux

Burgundy and Bordeaux bring us some of the world's most famous wines, but both of the growing regions have wines that can bring us everyday pleasure within a reasonable price range. Francos Wine Merchants will have two such wines open this Saturday, April 1st from 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

2014 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy with generations of experience in winemaking. While Bouchard has brought us some of the most famous wines in Burgundy, it is the sign of true winemaker when even his entry-level Bourgogne is outstanding. The 2014 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99) shows off its elegance by the bright ruby color once poured into the glass. Immediately the old world nose of this wine rises from the glass replete with nuances of cherry, plum and smoke. Bright and full of zest on the palate, the wine's red fruit core meshes well with the slight suggestions of wood spice along with a pungent limestone minerality all balanced out by good acidity. If you want to experience what red Burgundy is all about without the hefty price tag, this wine will deliver.

2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Leaving Burgundy and traveling southwest to Bordeaux, we arrive in the region of Saint-Emilion on the right bank where we find a very talented winemaker named Denis Durantou hard at work. Here the 35 year old vines grow in terroir of limestone, clay and gravel producing the fabulous 2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru ($28.99). Dark purple in color with an intense, deep nose, this wine with its 5 years of bottle age is ready to drink and enjoy. Focused on flavors of cherries and black raspberry along with a hint of spice, this wine is perfect for those cool spring nights still ahead. The strong flavors follow straight through to a soft finish with notes of black cherry and make this wine perfect for that first grilled steak of the season.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us Saturday April 1st 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2014 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99) and the 2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru ($28.99).

The Amazing Wines of Jean-Paul Brun

This 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon is where you will find owner and winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties where he creates these beautiful Beaujolais wines which have garnered so much attention in both the French and American press. Francos Wine Merchants has just received shipment of two of his exceptional wines and we will be pouring them Saturday, March 25th from 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Starting off with the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99) Jean Paul has two plots of 50 year old vines that grow on this south-east facing in the Côte de Brouilly. Here the Gamay grape thrives in the granitic soil and produces a wine with dark berry fruit and lots of minerality. The exceptional, pretty aroma of fresh strawberries and raspberries is extremely floral which leads into a very ripe palate that is extremely well-balanced. Jean-Paul's Côte is a medium bodied wine that is smooth, fresh and round. The low 12.5% alcohol allows the fresh flavors of this wine to show thru without taking away from its live, energetic and vivid characteristics.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Fleurie

Headed due north about 13km from Côte de Brouilly we find ourselves in the village of Fleurie which is home to another fabulous wine of his, the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Fleurie ($22.99). As with all Beaujolais, this wine is 100% Gamay grape and in addition this particular wine is aged in burgundian oak barrels. This wine offers deep aromas of black cherry, pomegranate and fresh herbs and is also modest in alcohol (13%) which allows deep, full-bodied and plush flavor to show through. The modest tannins and superb length grip the palate and stays focused right through its flavorful finish.

Both the Fleurie and Côte de Brouilly of Jean-Paul Brun are perfect wines for the transitional period of spring as well as being very complimentary of many of your spring menus. Also, Jean-Paul Brun has always worked in a natural fashion, so all of his wines are hand-picked, hand-sorted with no pesticides and use of natural yeasts.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us Saturday March 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99) and the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Fleurie ($22.99).

Come Taste the Newly Released 2014 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon

Since 1972, Clos Du Val — located in the heart of the Stags Leap District — has been offering up some of the best Cabernet Napa Valley has to offer. This coveted land features acres of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in North America. Only three miles long, Stags Leap District is often referred to as a "valley within a valley," and this Saturday we will be sampling their newest release.

2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Please join us Saturday, March 18th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Scott Gayman of Plymouth Wines as he pours the newly released 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($48.99). The 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($48.99) resembles none of their Cabernets of the past. While earlier vintages were made with fruit from outside the estate, the 2014 is made exclusively from estate fruit. The 2014 vintage had a growing season that brought warm, even days which helped produce perfectly developed fruit on all their vineyards. This wine has an intense inky-purple hue with aromas of coffee and blueberry. The lush and silky texture is full in flavor, with tannins that are approachable now, but will also mellow out if you decide to place this wine in your cellar for a few years. It's hard to believe after this week that grilling season is on the way, but eventually it will be here. Maybe there are even a few of you who have already shoveled a path through the snow out to the grill and are ready to fire it up. But whenever you are ready, there is no better pairing than the Clos Du Val Cabernet and a Dry-aged steak from the local butcher.

2013 Robert Craig Affinity Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Also from the Plymouth Wines, Scott will be pouring the 2013 Robert Craig Affinity Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($68.99). The 2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of producing this wine located just south of Stag's Leap on the east side of Napa. This wine is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and the balance being made up of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Showing a terrific dark red color and density with supple red plum, tobacco and hints of spice, this wine immediately shows off its pedigree. Well balanced and layered, this wine is approachable now, or of desired, the tannins allow for this wine to cellar for several years to come.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us Saturday March 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Scott Gayman of Plymouth Wines as he pours both the 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($48.99) and the 2013 Robert Craig Affinity Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($68.99).

Disciples — a Heavenly New Release from David Phinney

David Phinney of Orin Swift fame never seems to disappoint, and his new venture called "The Crane Assembly" is centered around a unique vineyard located in the gravel rich soils of southern St. Helena where back in 1885 George Beldon Crane first established this site.

2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel

Among the limited wines produced on this phenomenal eight acre site is the 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99). Dark crimson in color, the briar fruit and wild strawberry aromas leap out upon being poured into your glass. Delivering broad weight as well as strength, this wine boasts flavors of blackberries and chocolate that only vines of this age can deliver. The viscosity is fabulous and this wine should drink well for the next 5 to 7 years.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99). It is a unique opportunity to taste this remarkable wine.

We will be tasting the following wines this Saturday as well:

2013 Dievole Chianti Classico 2013 Alexander Valley Vineyards Sin Zin

2013 Dievole Chianti Classico ($17.99) — When you have classic Italian dishes on the menu, it's always fun to turn to Tuscany and the Sangiovese grape. This Chianti Classico is intense with beautiful floral notes and flavors of ripe cherry and dark spices. Paired with soft and elegant tannins, the Dievole brings you the best of what Tuscany has to offer.

2013 Alexander Valley Vineyards Sin Zin ($15.99) is a great little zinfandel that offers spicy aromas of pepper and vanilla and flavors of plum, cherry and a hint of cocoa. For those of you wandering out to the grill on these cool spring nights, this wine would pair perfectly with that first grilled burger of the season.

In Like a Lion — a Tasting Trio for Our First Saturday in March

It seems like February came in like a lion and left like a lamb, so I'm not sure what to expect for March. But Francos Wine Merchants will have some exciting tastings set up for the month and we are starting off with three wines for this Saturday, March 4th from 1:00-5:00PM.

2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Cotes du Rhone

Our newest arrival came in the other day, the 2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja ($9.99). A "great value" Rioja, the 2013 Sierra Cantabria is made from 100% Tempranillo grape. This wine is perfect for an easy drinking midweek wine, yet at $9.99 it's also a perfect wine to stock up on for any casual gathering. The bright/fresh bouquet and mild flavors of cherry and slight hints of pepper mesh well together. The mid-palate finish and soft tannins are what give this wine its versatility and ease of drinking.

Traveling from Spain to Southern France, we happen upon the 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99). This blend of classic Rhône grapes such as Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault are all grown on 40+ year old vines. Winemaker Eric Texier works his vineyards biodynamically and makes all his wines in a natural manner. The wine's aromatics of dark plum and sweet herbs combine with its dark garnet color and even darker fruit flavor. Expansive and dense in the mouth, this wine has a long, yet easy finish. These flavors make this wine a perfect pairing for a variety of beef stews or braised beef.

2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes"

Moving due north of the Rhone we enter the appellation of Morgon where we find the 2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($32.99). Guy Breton took over his family's domaine from his grandfather in 1986 and started out to make a name for himself. Following examples from traditionalists such as Jules Chauvet, Marcel Lapierre and Jean-Paul Thevenet, Guy made a return to old practices of viniculture and vinification. He did so by starting with old vines (his Morgon Vielle Vignes is from 80 year old vines), never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides as well as practicing harvesting late and rigorously sorting grapes to remove all but the healthiest grapes. The end result allows Morgon to express itself naturally, showcasing its rustic and spicy style, deep red color and lengthy finish.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 4th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the trio of the 2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja ($9.99), the 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99) and the 2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($32.99).

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

A Tantalizing, Tongue-Twisting Red Blend

Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch are two grapes you don't come across often, unless you are looking at the wines of Austria. But as an everyday wine to pair with simple foods, the wines of Austria often fit the bill.

2013 Heinrich Red

One such wine is the 2013 Heinrich Red ($14.99) which is a terrific blend of some native grapes of Austria and a perfect wine for your simple, midweek meals. Made from a blend of 50% Zweigelt, 40% Blaufrankisch and 10% St. Laurent, this wine is fermented in Stainless Steel and then aged in used Austrian oak casks. Heinrich Red comes from three growing regions: Leitha range, where the vines are planted in Limestone, Parndorfer where the soil is gravelly and Heideboden where the soil is a sandy loam. The blend of these grapes in combination with the various soil compositions is what helps make this wine so unique. Purple in color with a vibrant cherry nose, the bouquet also holds hints of floral and spice characters. But it is the round tannins, refreshing acidity and lower alcohol (12.5%) that makes this wine so approachable and easy to drink. Upon tasting this wine I pictured this as a perfect picnic wine given the characteristics described above, but alas while there have been spring-like temps lately we are still in February. Taking it home one night I paired it with a pasta recipe I had which contained Caramelized Cabbage and Sausage where it showed wonderfully. Also, if one decided to omit the pasta portion and served it with some simply browned sausage links on a bed of the caramelized cabbage, it would also be a culinary delight when paired.

2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc

Saturday Tasting: Please stop by this Saturday, February 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2013 Heinrich Red ($14.99). We will also be tasting the 2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc ($15.99). You may recall that we tasted this wine last weekend and it really got a terrific response so we are tasting it again this Saturday as we know a lot of you were out of town for the long weekend last week. A great little Cabernet Franc hailing from Argentina. Fabre Montmayou's ruby red color and firm, round tannins makes this a great wine for your winter menus.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Frank Family Vineyards — Come Taste Napa's Best Kept Secret

There are plenty of gems that dot the Napa Valley and the Frank Family Vineyards is definitely one of them. This month Francos Wine Merchants is featuring their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon.

2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) just arrived at our door and so we put it on sale at the phenomenal price of $44.99 and asked Mr. Branden Hylwa, Account Manager for Murphy Distributors to come in and conduct an In-Store Wine Tasting this Saturday, February 18th from 1:00-5:00PM.

The 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) has a varietal composition of 80% Cabernet, 13% Merlot with the balance split evenly between Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. The 2013 growing season produced a wine of beautiful elegance with an incredible dark ruby/purple color and nuances of blueberry and black raspberry fruit in the mouth. This wine is full-bodied with primary flavors of berries and dark chocolate which become apparent as the wine opens up. Drinkable now, this wine should continue to evolve gracefully and improve over the next 10 to15 years.

Le Contesse Prosecco 2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc

Branden will also be pouring two other wines of his, the most exciting being a new Prosecco, Le Contesse Prosecco ($14.99). We could not pass up on buying this Prosecco with its brilliant straw yellow color along with its fruitful and floral nose. All that combined with its refined taste and balanced acidity just made it too enticing to not purchase, so come taste for yourself. Also, Branden will have the 2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc ($15.99), a great little Cabernet Franc hailing from Argentina. Fabre Montmayou's ruby red color and firm, round tannins makes this a great wine for your winter menus.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, February 18th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Mr. Branden Hylwa, Account Manager for Murphy Distributors as he pours these wines from the Murphy Distributor portfolio.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Cahors, France — Where Malbec Began

Nowadays when you say "Malbec" most people think of Argentina but it is in France where this grape originated. Francos Wine Merchants just received shipment of a classically styled Malbec from a region where it has been grown for centuries, Cahors, France.

While Malbec has played a supporting role in Bordeaux as a blending grape for years, it is when you move to Southwest France, particularly the Cahors appellation, where this grape has flourished. In both Cahors as well as the Loire, this grape is often referred to as "Cot" by the locals.

2015 Chateau Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

But let us travel to Cahors where we find winemaker Julien Ilbert toiling among his vines that have been in his family for generations. His 2015 Château Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($13.99) is one of his prized efforts. Often referred to as the "Black Grape," this grape's thin skin is what makes it so succeptible to climate and soil conditions. In the terrior of Cahors regions this grape produces a very dark color and tremendous flavors of blackberry fruit. This wine in particular shows off these berry flavors mostly due to the limestone soil that is widespread throughout the region. Unlike its beefier South American cousins, this Malbec is light in style, yet still big in flavor and would be a perfect pairing for a Flat Iron Steak or even a more full-flavored Rib-Eye.

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday, February 11th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Château Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($13.99). It will be a great opportunity to taste a wine from the region where it originated.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Super Bowl & Super Syrah

Whether you are a Patriots Fan, Falcons Fan, Lady Gaga Fan or Commercial Fan, Super Bowl Sunday holds something for everyone. So before you settle down for kickoff, Francos Wine Merchants will be here to make sure you have everything you need for your party guests.

Please join us this Saturday, February 4th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome our host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits, who will be pouring the 2010 Paul Jaboulet "Domaine de Thalabert" Crozes Hermitage ($44.99).

2010 Paul Jaboulet "Domaine de Thalabert" Crozes Hermitage

Paul Jaboulet purchased this vineyard in 1834 and the domaine is the oldest vineyard in the appellation. This wine is made from 100% Syrah grape from vines that are 60 to 80 years old. While the vineyard produces many wines, it is his 2010 "Domaine de Thalabert" that has garnered a 93 rating from Robert Parker and he calls it one of the best buys in the Northern Rhone. The dense purple color along with beautiful perfume of black currants, licorice and dense fruit capture your eyes and nose and draw you in immediately. Full bodied and intense, the supple tannins along with a firm core will ensure this wine will drink well over the next 10-15 years. Classic winter meals such as cassoulet, rack or roast of lamb, or any meal of a hearty nature will make a perfect pairing for this wine.

Reintroduce yourself to the Gamay Grape

2015 Nicole Chanrion Cote-de-Brouilly

If you tune out once you hear someone say "Beaujolais" then you are missing out on one of the true gems of France. I know that many people's association with Beaujolais are the village level wines often simply labeled "Beaujolais Village" and "Beaujolais Nouveau" but the region of Beaujolais is so much more, especially when you get to the very famous villages such as Brouilly and Morgon.

Please join us this Saturday as we welcome back Ms. Christelle Marilhet, Wine Director for The Winebow Group, as she pours two outstanding wines from the villages of Brouilly and Morgon — both located in Beaujolais.

Starting out in the appellation of Côte-de-Brouilly, Christelle will first pour you the 2015 Nicole Chanrion Côte-de-Brouilly ($19.99). On this estate is where you will find Nicole Chanrion working all 6.5 hectares, pruning the vineyards, driving the tractors as well as the winemaking and bottling. With six generations of family tradition preceding her, she scoffed at those saying that winemaking was a man's work when she took over her family domaine in 1988. In 2000 she became the president of the Côte-de-Brouilly appellation and is now affectionately referred to as "La Patronne de la Côte," or the "Boss of la Côte." Using traditional methods such as hand harvesting and whole cluster fermentation help produce a wine that has thick, meaty tannins and a solid backbone. 100% Gamay grape, this wine is pure and fruit forward and the long finish leaves you craving another sip. As you peruse your cooking magazines for winter recipes, this wine will be an excellent match for many of them.

2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes"

Moving due north from Côte-de-Brouilly, Christelle will take you to the appellation of Morgon where we find the 2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($32.99). Guy took over his family's domaine from his grandfather in 1986 with one view in mind which was to break the mold of the one-dimensional uniform wine style that he felt was overtaking the region.

Saturday Tasting: So please make time to join us this Saturday January 28th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Ms. Christelle Marilhet, Wine Director for The Winebow Group, as she pours and tells you about these offerings from a fabulous region.

The Wines of Portugal — a Comprehensive Tasting

2014 Joao Ramos Marques de Borba

From Douro to Alentejano, Portugal is home to many fabulous and value driven wines. Often, we only think of Port from this famous wine growing region, but the area has so much more to offer and this Saturday we will be tasting three fabulous wines from Portugal.

Please join us this Saturday January 21st from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome our host, Ms. Christelle Marilhet, Wine Director for The Winebow Group as she pours three fabulous wines from the Winebow Portfolio.

Starting out in the appellation of Alentejo in Portugal we have the 2014 Joao Ramos Marques de Borba ($14.99) from winemaker Joao Ramos. The limestone soil for which this region is known is key in the making of this intriguing red. A blend of mostly indigenous grapes, this wine is easy drinking and had good color and balance. The fermentation in stainless steel tanks keeps the flavor bright, clean and fresh, and the four months of oak aging imparts some depth of flavor.

2013 Joao Ramos Reserva 2013 Duorum Colheita

Staying right within the appellation of Alentejo, we have another wine from Joao Ramos: the 2013 Joao Ramos Reserva ($14.99). Also a blend of mostly indigenous grapes, this Reserva has a touch of Syrah which gives the wine its much noted added body. Unoaked, this wine is fresh and full of fruit flavor while offering a plush mouthfeel. Aromas of ripe red berries and dried herbs lead into a palate that has a touch of spice and a long finish.

Moving Northwest, we come to the Douro Valley where we find the 2013 Duorum Colheita ($17.99). The word "Duorum" means "from two" and represents the merging of two of Portugal's famous pioneer winemakers Joao Ramos and José Franco. Also born of native grapes, this wine comes from two different parcels of land at two different altitudes. The result is a wine richly aromatic with black cherries, tar, mocha and hint of violets. On the palate this wine's rich texture is balanced perfectly against the zesty acidity and finely integrated tannins. The long finish makes this wine perfect for your favorite beef stew recipe.

Saturday Tasting: So please make time to join us this Saturday January 21st from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Ms. Christelle Marilhet, Wine Director for The Winebow Group, as she pours and tells you about these incredible wines she is offering.

2015 Domaine Dupeuble from Kermit Lynch Imports

2015 Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais

The hamlet of Le Breuil in the Southern Beaujolais is home to the Gamay grape and is where we find Domaine Dupeuble. This domaine has changed names only three times since 1512, the last time being in 1919 when Anna Asmaquer married Jules Dupeuble.

Now run by Anna's son Paul and her grandchildren Ghislaine and Stéphane Dupeuble, every generation brings something to the table including increasing the property to the almost one hundred hectares that it is today. Kermit Lynch first met Ghislaine and Stéphane's father in the late 1980s and they have been working with each other ever since. The wines of Dupeuble represent some of the best values in Beaujolais today, and are widely regarded for their very high quality and eminently reasonable price.

This brings us to the 2015 Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais ($13.99). Naturally produced, this wine is Estate Bottled and made using organic farming practices. The 50-100 year vines of the Gamay grape used to produce the Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais are harvested manually and hand sorted. Flavors of blackberries, cherry and red currants are all part of the multi-layered facets of this wine. The natural yeast used in fermentation is what gives this wine its elegance, freshness and bright fruit flavor. This wine will brighten up any roasted meat, beef stew or roasted chicken recipe. To get an Estate bottled wine at this price is quite an unbelievable find.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, January 14th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais ($13.99). It is a great opportunity to taste the fabulous Estate Bottled wine and taste the effort the Dupeuble Family puts into every bottle they produce.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Ease into January with Eric Texier Cotes du Rhone

2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Cotes du Rhone

As we settle back into a regular post-holiday routine, finding an easy going wine helps as our menus back away from rich foods we have been eating to the more comfort food of the winter like stews and other beef dishes.

Whether it's a light snow or a cold rain, the Rhône Valley has always given us wines that adapt well to winter nights. The 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99) delivers not just warmth on a frigid night, but also delivers on flavor. Most of this is due to the blend of classic Rhône grapes such as Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault all grown on 40+ year old vines. But before we can even get to that, we have Eric Texier himself. A onetime nuclear engineer, he left to study enology in 1992 and by 1995 had produced his own vintage. Now with his own vineyards in Brézème (located in northern Rhône) he also acts as a negociant across other appellations in the Rhône and Mâconnais. Eric Texier's winemaking techniques have put the small appellation of Brézème back on the map. He now works his vineyards biodynamically and makes all his wines in a natural manner.

The 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99) has aromatics of dark plum, earth and sweet herbs. Its dark garnet color has an even darker fruit flavor. Expansive and dense in the mouth, this wine has a long, yet easy finish. These flavors make this wine a perfect pairing for a variety of beef stews or braised beef. Or, if you were roasting a chicken with strong herbs such as sage, bay leaf or rosemary, this wine would pair perfectly as well.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, January 7th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99) at our weekly Saturday Tasting.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Sparkling Selections for New Year's

 Krug Grande Cuvee

When it comes to ushering in the New Year, Champagne is the first image to come to mind. This year, Francos Wine Merchants has an array of Champagne, Prosecco and Sparkling Wine on sale and ready to chill as the clock approaches midnight.

Our selection begins with Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99) where back in 1843 founder Joseph Krug set out to create a Champagne of absolute elegance. This delicious cuvee is a blending of many vintages which is what gives this Champagne its uniqueness. The deep golden color, fine vivacious bubbles and aromas of marzipan and gingerbread with hints of citrus is where this champagne starts. Once in the mouth, flavors of hazelnut, almonds and brioche abound. What makes this cuvee stand out from the others is a blend of 120 wines from ten or more different vintages and three grape varieties. This is definitely our pick to ring in 2017.

Taittinger Brut La Francaise Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve

In other non-vintage Champagnes, we have the Taittinger Brut La Francaise ($39.99) which is wonderfully crisp with lean, brisk flavors of citrus and pear. We also are offering on sale the Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve ($44.99), with vibrant aromas of fresh apple and pear. If you are looking for a Champagne with bright flavors of strawberry and raspberry, we have two Rosé Champagnes that fit the bill — the Champagne Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé ($61.99) and the Billecart Salmon Brut Rosé ($74.99).

You can see our complete list on the Champagne link here or on our Home Page. Or if you prefer a Sparkling Wine from other regions, please check out the "Prosecco & Other White Sparkling Wines" link here or on our Home Page.

Drouhin Laurene & Di Gresy Barbaresco — Come Taste the best of Oregon and Italy

2012 Domaine Drouhin Laurene Pinot Noir

While the countdown to the holidays dwindles, your wine choices are increasing. Francos Wine Merchants has two exceptional wines that recently arrived at our doorstep, and we will be tasting them this Saturday.

Please join us Saturday, December 17th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome back as our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours the 2012 Domaine Drouhin Laurene Pinot Noir ($69.99) and the 2011 Di Gresy Martinenga Barbaresco ($49.99).

2011 Di Gresy Martinenga Barbaresco

The Drouhin Family roots go back to 1880 Burgundy, where Joseph Drouhin began the family winemaking business. After over a century of perfecting the growth and production of Pinot Noir in Burgundy, the family ventured over to Oregon in the 1980s and established Domaine Drouhin in the picturesque region known as Dundee Hills. The Drouhin family goal was to craft wines naturally with gentle treatment and minimal manipulation to ensure a wine of classic finesse, elegance and true reflection of the terroir. There is no better example than their most well-known wine, the 2012 Domaine Drouhin Laurene Pinot Noir ($69.99).

Named after Joseph Drouhin's great-great grandaughter, the 2012 Domaine Drouhin Laurene Pinot Noir ($69.99) is their flagship wine and is 100% Pinot Noir. All of the fruit is handpicked, destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The 2012 Laurène Pinot Noir has an intense, bright ruby color in the glass. On the nose, there is a vibrant mix of red and black berries, fresh spice and wild herbs. Complex and layered, this extremely structured wine with its long, beautiful finish is just the wine you are looking for to pair with your holiday Crown Roast. Or, if you are shopping for a wine lover on your gift list, the 2012 Domaine Drouhin Laurène has the energy and definition to age easily for 10 to 15 years.

Traveling to Northern Italy, we arrive in the Barbaresco area of Piedmont where we find the historic estate of Marchesi Di Grésy. This estate never fails in its quality and the 2011 Di Gresy Martinenga Barbaresco ($49.99) is no exception. The gentle slopes of this south-facing vineyard allow this wine made of 100% Nebbiolo to grow in absolutely perfect conditions. On the nose, this wine offers sensations of sweet tobacco, leather and spice. It is fresh and jammy, rich in structure with good backbone and great harmony. Full and harmonious this wine with its brilliant garnet red color, rich complexity, intense flavors and slight hint of cloves on the nose is a classic match for both red and white meats richly seasoned with strong herbs such as rosemary, sage and thyme.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday December 17th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours the 2012 Domaine Drouhin Laurene Pinot Noir ($69.99) and the 2011 Di Gresy Martinenga Barbaresco ($49.99).

Taittinger and the Holiday Stroll — A Perfect Pairing

 Taittinger Brut La Francaise

December starts off here in New Canaan with the 12th Annual New Canaan Chamber Holiday Stroll, and our month of exciting Wine Tastings starts off this weekend. Regardless of whether you shop with us at our Elm Street location or shop with us online, you have access to the wines we will be highlighting this month.

The Holiday Stroll kicks off Friday Night, December 2nd 6:00-8:00PM where we will be joined by Mr. Jordon Ross, Connecticut State Manager for Kobrand Corp., as he pours one of the most popular Champagnes of the season, the Taittinger Brut La Francaise ($39.99). Nothing is more enjoyable during the holidays than a bracing glass of Champagne. The Taittinger Brut La Francaise is wonderfully crisp with its lean, brisk flavors of citrus and pear. In the mouth this sparkling wine is well cut and firm with a slight smoky underpinning on the finish. All this is what makes the Taittinger Brut La Francaise a staple at the holiday and the perfect way to start off any entertaining event you may be hosting over the holidays.

Please remember that on Friday night, Elm Street will be closed to vehicular traffic for this event.

2000 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2000 Fonseca

On Saturday December 3rd the Holiday Stroll continues and Jordon Ross will return in the afternoon to pour more of the Taittinger Brut La Francaise ($39.99) from 1:00-5:00PM, for those of you who may have not made it into town on Friday night.

This will be a great time to browse and do some early shopping to get some good ideas for people on your gift list. Two items of note are the large shipment of "Jadot Burgundy" we received this week, and our vast "Port" selection from producers such as Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca, and Croft.

Our shipment of Jadot Burgundy just arrived today. This shipment offers a wide selection of wines from throughout the villages of Burgundy. Some have been added to our online database but be sure to check back over the weekend to see the complete list by following the "Jadot Burgundy" and "Port" links here or on our Home Page.

So please join us during the Holiday Stroll this weekend as we welcome Mr. Jordon Ross of Kobrand Corp and sample the Taittinger Brut La Francaise ($39.99).

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Far Niente, Flowers & Dunn — A Turkey Trio Tasting

2014 Far Niente Chardonnay

Thanksgiving is a week away and if you are undecided as to what wine to serve, than Francos Wine Merchants has a fantastic tasting to help you make the perfect choice for your turkey dinner.

Please join us this Saturday, November 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome back as our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons. Alex will be pouring three outstanding wines, each a contender for your Thanksgiving dinner.

Our tasting will start off with the 2014 Far Niente Chardonnay ($54.99). Winemaker Nicole Marchesi carefully crafts this classic Napa Valley wine with care, selecting the best fruit from the cool growing region of Coombsville. The Far Niente Chardonnay opens with a light, tropical aroma of citrus and bright melon. On the tongue the silky entry leads into layers of toasted oak and other mineral flavors. This all ushers into a creamy structure and a long, mouthwatering finish. When you think your turkey with a light brown skin roasted to perfection, and then think of a Chardonnay with which to pair, it is this classic Napa Valley wine that should come to mind.

2014 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there, Alex will pour the 2014 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($46.99). Boasting a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry and spice, this Pinot Noir represents the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness are at the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with the many flavors of the various roasted vegetable side-dishes at the Thanksgiving table as well as the rich flavor of the turkey's dark meat.

2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

If a full flavored red wine is where you want to be, then the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99) is tailor-made for you. This cabernet is a powerhouse of flavor - it is deep, lush and rife with plenty of red berry and plum nuances. With 85% of the fruit coming from their Howell Mountain vineyard and 15% coming from their Napa vineyard, this bold wine will satisfy every cabernet lover at the table. If you are looking for a wine to stand up to the potatoes Anna, turnip mash, candied carrots, creamed onions, and roasted sweet potatoes, then look no further than the 2013 Dunn Napa.

In addition to the wines we are tasting, we also have an excellent selection of 2014 Joseph Drouhin Burgundy, Single Malt Scotch, American Whiskey and Port, also suited for your Thanksgiving table.

So please join us this Saturday, November 19th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons and taste all three of these fabulous wines.

Billecart-Salmon Champagne Tasting

 Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve

November is upon us and with Thanksgiving just a couple weeks away we here at Francos Wine Merchants have excellent wines in stock to help you pair with your Thanksgiving meal. In addition, we also have an exciting tasting lined up with Champagne Billecart-Salmon.

This Saturday, November 12th from 1:00-5:00PM we will welcome Mr. Clement Calleja, Northeast Brand Ambassador for Champagne Billecart-Salmon to our store to pour from the Champagne Billecart-Salmon portfolio.

Starting off, Clement will be pouring Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve ($44.99). A blend of 40% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir & 30% Chardonnay, this champagne is bright in the glass with a soft, straw-yellow color along with vibrant aromas of fresh cut apples and pear. Once on the tongue, layers of tropical fruit and flavors of honey and lemon abound, all leading into a full bodied mouthfeel with hints of fresh dough on the finish. This champagne is always a great approach to any meal.

 Billecart Salmon Brut Rose

Moving along to something a little more festive, Clement will also be pouring the Billecart Salmon Brut Rosé ($74.99). Always a treat, the Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé has a beautiful pale pink color with soft, golden edges once in the glass showing off its blend of 20% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir & 40% Chardonnay. Notes of red fruit and ripe raspberry rise from the glass and entice the taste buds. Once in the mouth, the gentle flavors of lemon and strawberry prevail as the fragrant yeasty notes lead into a finish that is clean and minerally. This Champagne would be a great addition to any Thanksgiving table.

A little background on Billecart-Salmon: The Billecart family has been living in Mareuil-sur-Ay since the 16th century. In the early 1800s Nicolas Francois Billecart married Elisabeth Sallmon and the two families' long held vineyards were married as well, and in 1818 the house of Billecart-Salmon was founded. It is currently managed by the seventh generation with brothers Francois and Antoine Roland-Billecart at the helm.

Our host, Clement Calleja, is a native of the Alsace region in France where he first developed his passion for wines. He also holds a Master's degree in Management from Reims Management School with a major in Wine & Champagne Marketing. He joined Billecart-Salmon as a Brand Ambassador in 2013 and currently lives in New York City and travels throughout the United States.

So please make the time on Saturday afternoon November 12th from 1:00-5:00PM to visit with Mr. Clement Calleja, Northeast Brand Ambassador for Champagne Billecart-Salmon as he pours these exceptional Champagnes and offers some very interesting insights into these incredible wines.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order these wines by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

November Specials — Readying for the Holidays

2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Far Niente Chardonnay

It's hard to believe that November is here; Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and then it's full speed ahead thru December. Francos Wine Merchants has some fantastic November Cellar Specials that will plant some ideas for your needs ahead.

Among our Cellar Specials this month is the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99). This effort from Dunn Vineyards takes fruit from both their Howell Mountain Vineyards as well as fruit from their Napa Vineyards. What is delivered is a powerhouse of flavor rife with red berry and plum nuances. While this wine drinks well right out of the gate, it could easily be laid down for 15 or so years.

If a Chardonnay is more to your preference, the2014 Far Niente Chardonnay ($54.99) also hails from California's Napa Valley. The gravelly loam/volcanic ash soil helps deliver a wine that is subtle with the tropical flavors we have long associated with Far Niente. As the Thanksgiving holiday rapidly approaches, it is the bright melon and citrus notes along with the layers of toasted oak and mineral that makes this wine so appealing to pair with the holiday turkey.

2003 Croft Vintage Port Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve

Garnering 90 points from both Robert Parker and Stephen Tanzer, the 2003 Croft Vintage Port ($72.99) would be a welcome sight on any Thanksgiving table. The exotic nose and hints of cherry liqueur and dark chocolate will definitely entice your dinner guests. Finishing big and broad with succulent flavors of black fruit, this port is ready to drink.

Always a welcome sight, the Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve ($44.99) comes to us from one of the most well regarded houses in Champagne. The soft, stray-yellow color, nuances of honey and lemon, and a mouthfeel that is full of fresh dough flavor, this champagne is sure to please. Oregon & Spain — Our October Surprises

2014 Argyle Willamette Valley

We have seen some excellent wines come our way this month, and we have two more reds to add to the list that definitely deserve a look. Both of these wines have some beautiful characteristics that would pair extremely well with many of your autumn menus.

First we start out in Oregon with the 2014 Argyle Willamette Valley ($22.99). If you are in search of a true example of what Oregon's Willamette Valley has to offer, then look no further. Aromas of dark cherry and raspberry are the first nuances to greet you with this wine. Once on the tongue, it is evident that the hand-picked fruit is handled with care producing a wine that is lush, yet firm in the mouth with a silky texture and an earthy minerality. As your food magazines start to revisit such recipes as the classic Beef Stroganoff or even a simpler country beef stew, this wine with its building density and mild tannins is the wine you want to use as a pairing.

2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto

From the cool climate of Oregon we travel over to Northwest Spain where 5th generation winemaker, Pedro Rodriguez toils away at Adegas Guimaro and brings us his 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99). This single vineyard offering of the Mencia grape is from 90 year old vines which are grown on steep 70 degree slopes of granite/slate/sand soil. Foot-treading, partial whole-cluster fermentation and long maceration on the skins as well as organic farming practices all figure into the production of this age-worthy wine of Adegas Guimaro. This wine greets you with a nose of bright red and blackberry fruit and the flavor is bold and spicy with excellent balance and a slight acidity to complement its soft, tasty texture. If the autumn season brings you some wild game such as venison, this wine is tailor-made for such meat. Even that final grilled steak of the season would be a very satisfying match for this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday October 29th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we sample both the2014 Argyle Willamette Valley ($22.99) and the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99). 2014 Joseph Drouhin Chassagne Montrachet 2014 Joseph Drouhin Meursault 2014 Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet

Please join us this Saturday, October 22nd from 1:00-5:00PM for a very special Tasting event. We have as our hosts Mr. Bruce Cole, National Sales Director for Dreyfus Ashby, who imports the wines of Joseph Drouhin, and Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons who is the exclusive Distributor of the wines of Joseph Drouhin in Connecticut.

Burgundy, France is one of the most complex winemaking regions in the world with a rich history of viticulture dating back to the first century. Seeing opportunity, in 1880, Joseph Drouhin at the youthful age of 22 settled in Beaune and put all his focus into building his reputation. His love of wine became a passion he passed down to each new generation of Drouhins. Assembled parcel by parcel over the years, today properties of Joseph Drouhin comprise 73 hectares of vineyards in Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis. It is one of the most important domaines in Burgundy, with more than two thirds of the vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Crus. The House of Joseph Drouhin is now run by Joseph's four grandchildren who carry on the tradition started by their grandfather.

2014 Joseph Drouhin Cote de Beaune Villages 2014 Joseph Drouhin Cote de Nuits Villages 2014 Joseph Drouhin Chorey Les Beaune

More than just Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the various regions, terrains and terroir of the many villages of Burgundy give both of these grapes their own individual and unique characteristics and personalities. If you have never had the chance to taste these different regions side by side, then don't miss this opportunity. For 2014 Joseph Drouhin White Burgundy, we plan to have open the 2014 Joseph Drouhin Chassagne Montrachet ($62.99), the 2014 Joseph Drouhin Meursault ($53.99) and the 2014 Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet ($58.99). 2012 Saintayme St Emilion Grand Cru - Quality driven and affordable

Along with the arrival of crisp autumn mornings, October is also a great time for exciting wine arrivals. Just this week, we received shipment of an impressive Saint Emilion Grand Cru that will definitely be a great addition to any of your autumn menus.

2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru

From the Right Bank of Bordeaux, we have the 2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru ($28.99). Winemaker Denis Durantou has several properties throughout Bordeaux and he has worked his magic again at this tiny Pomerol estate and elevated the quality of wine that it produces. The 2012 Saintayme Grand Cru is focused on its cherry and black raspberry flavors that are produced from these 35 year old vines. A pioneer of the green harvesting movement, Denis Durantou is famous for crafting terroir driven wines and the 2012 Saintayme is no exception. Grown in the increasingly popular commune of Saint Etienne de Lisse, the soil here is primarily limestone, clay and gravel. Youthful and voluptuous, the focus of flavor on this wine is dark red berries and black cherry. The fleshy black plum nose along with its cherry freshness is immediately enticing in the mouth as the layered flavors reveal themselves. Medium bodied with a bold entry, flavors of red cherry and raspberry nicely intermingle on the palate with a slight hint of oak. As your red meat choices move from the bold flavors of the patio grill to the subtle roasted flavors of the oven, this is the wine you want to consider.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Join us this Saturday October 15th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we sample the 2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru ($28.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting. Discover Italy ...

October is a great month to reacquaint yourself with Italy as our cooking switches from outdoors to indoors. Last week we talked about our new arrivals from Sicily and this week we head a bit further north to both Tuscany and Verona where we find two extraordinary red wines.

2014 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino

Starting out in Tuscany we have the 2014 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99). Organically grown, this red wine made from 100% Sangiovese grape immediately transports you to the sunny Tuscan hillsides of this Montalcino Estate. The ruby red color and aromas of red berry are the characheristics that first greet you with this wine. In the mouth the soft round tannins are what creates the backbone of flavor and its warm, approachable style that sets it apart from others. Classic pasta dishes such as Bucatini with Pancetta or Garganelli with Pork Ragu would be perfect pairings for this wine.

2014 Mazzi Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Sanperetto"

Heading even further north, we come to the province of Verona where in the hills of Negrar we find the 2014 Mazzi Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Sanperetto" ($17.99). In 1960 Roberto Mazzi finished his studies in Agriculture and began work at his family Estate. Now that work is carried out by his sons Stefano and Antonio who produce this Valpolicella Classico Superiore. Primarily Corvina (65%), the balance of this wine is made up of Rondinella, Corvinone and Molinara. Bright red in color with aromas of cherry, violet and pepper, this wine is round the mouth, with a slight acidity from the chalky loam/clay soil. Not too weighty, this wine could easily be paired with rosemary flavor of your favorite Tuscan Roasted Chicken recipe.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Join us this Saturday, October 8th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2014 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99) and the 2014 Mazzi Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Sanperetto" ($17.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order any of the wines we pour at our Wine Tastings by clicking on the name or picture here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2014 Joseph Drouhin Burgundy: We recently received a large shipment of 2014 Joseph Drouhin Burgundy. We are very excited to have these wines in stock and will be writing more about them in the next week or two as well as scheduling an In-Store Tasting. New Arrivals from Sicily

Arianna Occhipinti may not be a name you are familiar with, but this young winemaker is one you will be hearing about and is known throughout Sicily. Arianna released her first vintage in 2004 at the age of 21 and is a rising star in the biodynamic movement. She has created a line of wine under the label Tami and we just got in stock two of these wines and both are excellent examples of what is coming out of Sicily.

2014 Tami Frappato

The first wine is the 2014 Tami Frappato ($15.99) — a varietal not known to many, but one that is very food friendly. Native to Sicily, Frappato greets you with aromas of plum and black cherry. On the palate, it's exactly what one looks for in an easy drinking wine with its light ruby color and fresh berry flavor. Unoaked and made with native yeasts, this wine showcases the biodynamic and organic farming practices of Arianna Occhipinti. An excellent everyday wine, this would pair perfectly with any classic tomato pasta dish, and if it were one made with creamy burrata cheese melted into it, it is a match made in heaven.

2014 Tami Nero d'Avola

Next up we have the 2014 Tami Nero d'Avola ($15.99). This grape, which is also native to Sicily, is darker in color then its sister wine, Frappato. Tami Nero D'Avola follows the same all natural/organic winemaking process as the other Occhipinti wines. The aroma is notable with its dark, black cherry color and a warm/comforting smell that draws you right in. Vivid and energetic, this wine has good weight and elegant tannins. There could not be a more perfect example of Nero D'Avola than this wine from Occhipinti. With all the end of season tomatoes in the market place, I suggest you serve this wine with a sautéed chicken breast covered in a classic tomato/sage/butter sauce.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Join us this Saturday, October 1st from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2014 Tami Frappato ($15.99) and the 2014 Tami Nero d'Avola ($15.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order any of the wines we pour at our Wine Tastings by clicking on the name or picture here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2015 Lapierre Morgon — Natural Wine at its Best

There are some wines releases we are always excited about when we see them, and the Lapierre Morgon is certainly one of them. This naturally produced wine from Mathieu Lapierre and imported by Kermit Lynch is one that never disappoints. We just received a 25 case shipment and, with its reputable history and recent 93 rating from Robert Parker, it has already started to move out the door.

2015 Lapierre Morgon

The 2015 Lapierre Morgon ($28.99) hails from the Beaujolais region in the village of Morgon, but if we want to really talk about this wine, we have to go back a few years to 1973. It was then that Marcel Lapierre took the reins of the vineyard over from his father who was one of the original preachers of "natural wines" from back in the 1950s. No pesticides, late harvest, rigorous sorting, no added sulphur and natural yeasts define this wine. And it is these practices which makes it stand out from the other wines in the region. Five years ago Marcel's son Mathieu took over upon his father's death, but the tradition of producing natural wines lives on.

The methods practiced by Lapierre are what sets him apart from the majority of mass-produced wines in the region. Decomposed granite compromises most of the eleven hectares and the vines are an average age of 45 years old. Lapierre picks his grapes at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit and then ages his wines on fine lees for at least nine months which sets it apart from the other wines from Morgon. Bottled unfiltered, this wine is bright in color, and shows extraordinary complexity with floral and berry aromas and an enjoyable mouthfeel from start to finish.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Join us us this Saturday, September 24th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Lapierre Morgon ($28.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order any of the wines we pour at our Wine Tastings by clicking on the name or picture here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

In-Store Tasting: 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto - New Arrival from Spain

From Northwest Spain, in the appellation of Riberia Sacra, we have a new arrival — the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) — an outstanding red wine made from the Mencia grape from winemaker Pedro Rodriguez of Adegas Guimaro.

2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto

Please join us this Saturday, September 17th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits, who will be pouring and chatting about the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) as well as its "little brother," the 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Tinto ($15.99).

Pedro Rodriguez — 5th generation winemaker at Adegas Guimaro — produces several wines, but it is his 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) that is one of his stars. This wine is a single vineyard offering of the Mencia grape from 90 year old vines grown on steep 70 degree slopes of granite/slate/sand soil. This is their original family-owned vineyard on a southeast plot where these old vines thrive, producing this age-worthy wine. This wine gets a unique vinification with foot-treading, partial whole-cluster fermentation and long maceration on the skins. Add to this organic farming practices along with wild yeast fermentation, and you have a wine that stands out among its rivals. Open and aromatic, this wine is rife with red and blackberry fruit while being both earthy and spicy; yet it is also balanced and juicy. Expect some moderate acidity to complement its soft tasty texture. This is a serious wine to be paired with wild game, braised beef, stews, and roasted or grilled meats.

Also from Pedro Rodriguez at Adegas Guimaro is the 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Tinto ($15.99) made from the Mencia grape as well. While crafted from younger vines with an average age of 40 years, this wine is un-oaked and pure with flavors of lush red fruit, spices and the distinctive slate-laden minerality of the other wines at Guimaro. Any dishes with chorizo, pork or a little spice would be a perfect match for this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, September 17th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines, and taste both the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) and the 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Tinto ($15.99).

Price Correction: The wine we featured last week was priced incorrectly in our email, the 2014 Domaine de Roally Viré-Clessé ($22.99) is priced at $22.99 on Sale and not the $24.99 listed in the email.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order any of the wines we pour at our Wine Tastings by clicking on the name or picture here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2014 Domaine de Roally $24.99 — Burgundy without Breaking the Bank

With the waning days of summer upon us, we still have warm days but the nights cool off very quickly. As the temperature changes we gradually turn from our lighter style white wines to those with a little more weight. Burgundy definitely has some wines that are perfect for this transition and Francos Wine Merchants has one that fits the bill.

2014 Domaine de Roally Vire-Clesse

The 2014 Domaine de Roally Viré-Clessé ($22.99) is an outstanding white wine from Burgundy's Maconnaise district. Made from 100% Chardonnay yet crisp in style it satisfies both the drinker who yearns for a wine with good weight, but also satisfies the wine drinker who enjoys a crisp finish. The fresh nose with hints of almond lead into flavors of lush, layered fruit and crisp minerality. Upon tasting this wine immediate thoughts of a free range chicken rubbed with lemon oil and fresh thyme from the garden grilled slowly over a low fire come to mind. Domaine de Roally Viré-Clessé would pair perfectly with the chicken's natural juices and the fresh flavor of the herbs. But if you are in the mood for some fresh swordfish or perhaps some grilled salmon, this wine still keeps you in good company. Being from the Maconnaise it will be both clean on the palate and trail off into a crisp finish.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, September 10th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2014 Domaine de Roally Viré-Clessé ($22.99) at our weekly Saturday Wine Tasting.

Taste of the Town Stroll featuring Chandon Sparkling Wines — this Thursday

The 5th Annual "Taste of the Town Stroll" is this Thursday, August 25th starting at 6:00PM. This annual event involves twenty different participating stores and restaurants and benefits the New Canaan Food Pantry. Francos Wine Merchants will be participating by offering a Wine Tasting featuring Chandon Sparkling Wines.

 Chandon Brut Classic

Please join us Thursday night, August 25th from 6:00-8:00PM along with our host, Mr. George Haverly — Ambassador for Chandon USA — as he pours two wines from the Chandon Portfolio.

First, George will be pouring the Chandon Brut Classic ($17.99). The Chandon Brut Classic is a refreshing soft yet dry sparkling wine, delivering complex apple and pear characteristics. It is the fresh brioche nose that first entices you followed by a nutty flavor and a refreshingly dry finish. If you are in need of a summer sparkler, the Chandon Brut Classic in its seasonal white and blue packaging will be a hit at any gathering.

 Chandon Sparkling Rose

Moving on, we come to another one of the Chandon wines, the Chandon Sparkling Rosé ($17.99). Primarily Chardonnay, with a bit of Pinot Noir, the Chandon Sparkling Rosé is the perfect wine for summer entertaining. The light pink color in the glass is festive on its own, but soon after pouring, aromas of ripe strawberries rise from the glass. But it is the abundant flavors of red cherry and plum that make this wine so food friendly with dishes such as seafood, sushi and a variety of spicy dishes. Even solo, this wine is a joy to drink. Also in a great white and pink summer packaging, this wine makes any event a party.

Taste of the Town Stroll is a "food-raiser" for the New Canaan Food Pantry, and the New Canaan Chamber will collect donations during the event. Activities and culinary delights will be available at each of the participating venues throughout downtown, along with prizes and raffles. Details for this event and how to donate to the New Canaan Food Pantry can be found on the New Canaan Chamber website.

Saturday Wine Tasting: If you are unable to join us on Thursday night, we will also be tasting both the Chandon Brut Classic ($17.99) and the Chandon Sparkling Rosé ($17.99) this Saturday, August 27th from 1:00-5:00PM at our weekly Saturday Wine Tasting.

2014 William Fevre Chablis — Bring the shore to you for only $21.99

As this August heatwave continues, many of us are already back home from our beach vacations. But if your mind is still at the shore, and your taste buds are still dreaming of shellfish and lobsters, Francos Wine Merchants can transport you back to the shore even if it's only for a brief few hours with a great wine we have in stock.

2015 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Chablis is a wine region with global renown, and Domaine William Fevre also shares the same notoriety among the world of Chablis. The 2015 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99) is where the fabulous wines of William Fevre all start. This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. The 2014 growing season was graced by beautiful weather in August and into September. This allowed the crop of the 2014 season to reach optimum maturity along with achieving perfect balance, great freshness and magnificent purity. In addition to the very elegant bouquet, this wine shows flinty flavors of wet stone and a beautifully clean finish. Any shellfish — especially one with a briny quality — will pair exceptionally well with this wine as will almost any chicken recipe that has tarragon or thyme as one of the main herbs as an ingredient. The clean and crisp finish of this wine is just what you are looking for on these hot days we've been experiencing, so chill up a bottle tonight and enjoy!

Saturday Wine Tasting: Stop in this Saturday, August 20th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99) at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 Clos de la Roilette — Estate Bottled & Produced Wine for Only $19.99

While to find a delicious bottle of wine for under $20 is always great, to find one that pairs perfectly with your seasonal menus is even better; to find one that is organic is terrific, but to find one that has all these attributes as well as being estate bottled and produced is fantastic!

2015 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie

The 2015 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99) is a wine that we are always happy to have in stock. Hailing from the appellation of Fleurie, this selection from Louis/Dressner Imports is a wine that is more than perfect if you are looking for a summer red. Winemaker Alain Coudert is one of the most respected producers in Beaujolais. Alain works his magic with the Gamay grape and proves that it is so much more than a grape of youthful drinkability. The naturally produced 2015 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99) is a wine that is very easy drinking. The first thing you notice about this wine is its deep purple/black currant color. On the nose, aromas of bright berry and crème de cassis are prevalent and carry right over into the mouth. The black cherry flavor and slight nuttiness are a definite mouthful and the lingering taste eases off to a finish that has a little zest of acidity. What is perfect about this wine is that if it is a hot August evening you can easily place this wine in the fridge for twenty or so minutes and put a slight chill on it without muting the true flavor of the Gamay grape. So whether you are thinking about a delicious Flat Iron steak with fresh parsley gremolata, grilled Sockeye Salmon, or a spatchcock chicken dressed with fresh herbs from the garden, this is the wine you want in your glass.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Stop in this Saturday, August 13th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99) at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

Summer Selections continue with 2015 Honig Sauvignon Blanc — On Sale $16.99

2016 Honig Sauvignon Blanc

While Summer lets us enjoy many crisply styled wines, such as a Refreshing Summer Rosé and Sauvignon Blancs from places like the Sancerre, Loire and New Zealand, let's not forget that we have many Sauvignon Blancs from right in our own back yard — and Francos Wine Merchants has one that is perfect for August.

Honig Vineyards in Napa Valley has been producing wines in the Rutherford area of Napa since 1964 and among their prize wines is the 2016 Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($17.99). A blend of 95% Sauvignon Blanc with the balance being 4% Semillion and 1% Muscat, the fruit for this wine comes from their sustainably farmed vineyard planted by founder Louis Honig. The wine's bright acidity lends a crisp freshness to the subtle peach and lemongrass flavors. But it is Honig's juicy and refreshing taste combined with the aromas of jasmine and grapefruit that is truly enticing. The medium-bodied weight and lingering finish make this the perfect wine for summer, meant to be paired with cracked crab, cold lobster salad or even freshly caught scallops over a creamy mushroom risotto. So why not chill up a bottle and enjoy!

2015 Chateau Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

Saturday Wine Tasting: Come taste the 2016 Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($17.99) this Saturday, August 6th from 1:00-5:00PM at our Saturday Wine Tasting. Along with this wine we will also be tasting the 2015 Château Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($13.99). You may recall that this wine was listed for our tasting last week, but our email on this wine produced such a positive response that we actually sold out of the wine before Saturday's tasting. So we ordered 15 more cases to ensure we have enough for this week!

Celebrate Summer with 2014 Newton Red Label Chardonnay & 2014 Chateau Combel la Serre Cahors

2014 Newton Red Label Chardonnay

While the recent heatwave has made us seek out more refreshing wines, such as Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc, it does tend to keep us away from some other varietals. Seeing that this week has offered a little bit of relief from the heat and humidity, we would love to tell you about a wonderful Chardonnay and excellent Malbec we have in stock.

The 2014 Newton Red Label Chardonnay ($24.99) is the first tier of chardonnay with the famous Newton Vineyards. A blend of grapes from both their Sonoma and Napa vineyards gives this chardonnay both amazing depth of flavor and length of finish. The aromas of ripe melon and apple are evident as soon as you pour this wine into your glass. The aroma transitions almost seamlessly from the nose to the mouth with its full, round flavor and velvetly mouthfeel. It is the lush and approachable flavors of apple and pear that make this the perfect wine for those cooler nights when you are out on the patio enjoying the evening sunset. If you have ever tried a Grilled Orange Chicken recipe, this wine would be superb as it would mesh well with the primary ingredients of orange, garlic and paprika. But also, a Grilled Lemon Swordfish garnished with some fresh mint from the garden would be perfect as well. Newton has been making wines since 1977 so if nothing else, they have perfected how to grow chardonnay grapes.

2015 Chateau Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

From California we travel over to southern France to the region of Cahors where winemaker Julien Ilbert toils among the vines that have been in the Ilbert family for generations. His 2015 Château Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($13.99) is one of his prized efforts. Recently certified as organic, this 100% Malbec has been produced using natural farming methods for years. A beautiful deep color in the glass, this wine has flavors of raspberry and currant along with a fresh and easy flavor. Unlike its beefier Chiliean cousins, this Malbec is lighter in style but still big in flavor and would be a perfect pairing for any grilled flank, ribeye or NY strip.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Come taste both the 2014 Newton Red Label Chardonnay ($24.99) and the 2015 Château Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($13.99) this Saturday, July 30th from 1:00-5:00PM at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc $29.99 - a perfect wine for the shore

2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

When it comes to choosing summer wines, Sauvignon Blanc is definitely on the short list. Depending on the region and terroir, this wine can have many different characteristics. A favorite locale for Sauvignon Blanc are ones from New Zealand and Francos Wine Merchants just received shipment from one of the New Zealand's most notable vineyards.

The 2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99) is the crown jewel of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Hailing from the Marlborough region where most of the Sauvignon Blanc is grown, Cloudy Bay is one of the five original vineyards. Bright from the moment you pour it into your glass, the aromatics of grapefruit and kaffir lime are prominent in the nose. On the palate, layered flavors of lemongrass, honeysuckle and lime zest abound along with a racy acidity. All these citrus flavors make this the perfect wine to pair with all seafood from clams/oysters to lobster and fish. If you are planning a week or weekend at the shore, this is the wine you want to definitely tote along.

2015 Clos d'Alari Grand Clos

Still in the height of Rosé season, the 2015 Clos d'Alari Grand Clos ($19.99) is one that you need to explore. The blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Rolle and Mourvèdre comes together beautifully in this classic Provence Rosé. The delicate nose with aromas of white peach and pear is a perfect counterbalance to these hot, humid days. Balanced and supple, it makes for a great pairing with an easy dinner of grilled chicken burgers topped with guacamole.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Come taste both the 2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99) and the 2015 Clos d'Alari Grand Clos ($19.99) this Saturday, July 23rd from 1:00-5:00PM at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 Groiss Grüner Veltliner & Sidewalk Sale Days — two signs of Summer!

2015 Groiss Grüner Veltliner Landwein

We all have our favorite summer standby wines — Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadet, etc. — but one refreshing yet often overlooked wine is Grüner Veltliner and Francos Wine Merchants has a terrific one that is perfect for many of your summer menus.

The 2015 Groiss Grüner Veltliner Landwein ($9.99) comes to us from Austria where most of the world's Grüner Veltliner is grown. The primary flavors in Grüner Veltliner tend to lean toward citrus flavors combined with a bright acidity. It is actually the bright vein of acidity throughout the wine that makes Grüner Veltliner so unique. Perfect for summer, Grüner Veltliner is low in alcohol (usually around 12%) and its refreshing flavor, and very comfortable price add to its warm weather allure. The flavors of lemon/grapefruit make this wine pair so well with many seasonal simple dishes. On a hot summer evening, a cold steak salad, poached salmon or even take-out sushi is almost tailor made for this wine. The pale yellow color with a greenish hue (Grüner translates as "green") is almost as inviting as the smooth taste and dry finish of this wine. Grüner Veltliner is a wine you drink young, so you always want to look for a recent vintage. The 2015 Groiss Grüner Veltliner not only fits this description but the One Liter bottle gives you a little extra "bang for your buck" with an extra glassful in each bottle.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Come taste the 2015 Groiss Grüner Veltliner Landwein ($9.99) this Saturday, July 16th from 1:00-5:00PM at our Saturday Wine Tasting. As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order this wine by clicking on the name or picture here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

New Canaan Annual Sidewalk Sale: Also this Saturday is the 51st Annual New Canaan Sidewalk Sale. For those of you not familiar with this yearly event, on Saturday July 16th, Elm & Main Streets in downtown New Canaan will be blocked off from vehicular traffic and turned into a one day pedestrian mall. Stores will put out their merchandise at sale prices and restaurants set up on the street serving adapted menus. This event takes place rain or shine and is a fun day for all.

Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosé & New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale - Two ways to beat the heat

2015 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosi¿½

We had two new arrivals last week just in time for this mini heat-wave that is now upon us. So whether you are a lover of a refreshing Rosé or you prefer the thirsting quenching taste of an Amber Ale, Francos Wine Merchants has you covered.

One of the jewels of the Loire comes from village of Sancerre where producer Michel Reverdy's linage as a wine making family goes back centuries. The 2015 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Ros ($24.99) arrived at our doorstep just in time to be featured as one of our July Cellar Specials. Comprised entirely of Pinot Noir grape, the grapes are harvested from vines with an average age of thirty years. Don't let the light pink color and aromas of strawberry fool you, this wine is rife with flavors of red fruit and a noted touch of minerality. While delicate enough to serve swordfish, grilled halibut and Chilean sea bass, the firm structure of the Pinot Noir allows you to also serve it with a variety of red meats and would be a perfect pairing for a grilled skirt steak with a fresh parsley gremolata.

New Belgium Brewing Fat Tire Amber Ale

For years one of most requested items has been the New Belgium Brewing Fat Tire Amber Ale ($10.99)/6-Pk, and it has finally arrived in Connecticut. Fat Tire Amber Ale is made in the Belgian style with a medium body and hoppy freshness and this ale is full of flavor. The caramel malt flavor and the slight bitterness of the hops combine together along with just the right carbonation to make this ale the perfect drink for the rising mercury. So throw a juicy burger on the grill and top it with cheese, red onion and one of the first tomatoes of the season and you are good to go!

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday July 9th from 1:00-5:00 as we taste both the 2015 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Ros ($24.99) and the New Belgium Brewing Fat Tire Amber Ale ($10.99)/6-Pk.

2015 La Pépie & 2015 Bourgeois Sancerre Rosé — A trip thru the Loire

2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Jeunes Vignes Sancerre Rose

The Loire Valley is home to some of our favorite wines and Francos Wine Merchants have found two more to add to your list. What is great about the Loire Valley is that while we enjoy many of their wines year-round, most of them really shine when it comes to your summer menus. Never too heavy or weighty and full of fresh flavor and refreshing in style, these wines deserve a look

Starting off at the eastern end of the Loire we arrive in the village of Sancerre where we find the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Jeunes Vignes Sancerre Rosé ($17.99). Made entirely from Pinot Noir grape, this elegant and refined wine is flush with berry notes and a refreshing minerality classic to the wines of Sancerre. But it is the three to four months of maturation on its lees which make this wine so intense in aroma and bold in flavor. The full red fruit flavor makes this wine perfect for many grilled fish you might have on the menu, including salmon, tuna and Chilean sea bass.

2015 La Pepie Cot

Traveling directly due west in the Loire we find winemaker Marc Ollivier of Domaine de la Pépière hard at work producing some of the best wines in the region. Among his array of wines is the 2015 La Pépie Côt ($13.99), made from the Malbec grape which goes by the more familiar name of Côt in the Loire Valley. Produced from younger vines between six and eleven years in age, this wine is vibrant, bright and full of fruit. The flowery violet notes on the nose and its soft, juicy, raspberry flavor on the palate give us a wine that is uncomplicated yet utterly enjoyable. This fun, fresh wine is slightly less opulent than its cousins in Argentina, which makes it perfect for the upcoming barbarque season and the warm summer evenings because you can put a very slight chill on this wine if you choose.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, June 25th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Jeunes Vignes Sancerre Rosé ($17.99) and the 2015 La Pépie Côt ($13.99).

Mencia & Verdejo — Spain's distinctive grapes

2015 Naia Verdejo

Spain offers us so many wines of interest and we are excited to have two wines of distinctive quality that are just perfect for June entertaining. Not only do we have these wines to offer, but we will be tasting them at our Saturday Wine Tasting this Saturday, June 11th, 1:00-5:00PM.

First from Rueda in Northern Spain, we have the 2015 Naia Verdejo ($13.99), a Spanish white wine which is made from 100% Verdejo. The vibrant yellow color catches the eye as the aromas of pear and apple waft up from the glass. Round and full in the mouth, it's the wine's refreshing nuances of lime must and kiwi that make it so perfect for summer. The wonderful fresh flavor along with its firm acidity brings to mind a dinner of grilled halibut over rice pilaf, or perhaps skewered shrimp in a citrus marinade.

2013 Petalos Bierzo

Traveling even further north from Rueda and a little bit west we come to Bierzo where we find a beautiful Spanish red wine: the 2013 Petalos Bierzo ($19.99). Renowned producer Descendientes de José Palacios meticulously grows his Mencia grapes on the hillside vineyards in the region. Benefitting from cool climate combined with the mineral-laden soil, the Mencia grape is made into a wine with great concentration and complexity. Expressive with flavors of black cherry, current and licorice are tasted throughout this wine. With its smoky flavor and gentle but firm structure, this wine is perfect for a grilled Flat Iron Steak cooked medium rare and served with a fresh parsley gremolata.

Celebrate Memorial Day with Two Classic American Wines

2014 Newton Red Label Chardonnay

The unofficial start of summer arrives with Memorial Day and while Francos Wine Merchants has plenty of wines to choose from for your holiday weekend, we have two superb Napa Valley wines that would make excellent choices for your Memorial Day menus. We will be tasting these two wines along with a fabulous Rosé at our Wine Tasting this Saturday May 28th from 1:00-5:00PM.

First, from Newton Vineyards we have the 2014 Newton Red Label Chardonnay ($24.99). This Chardonnay is a blend of their Sonoma and Napa vineyards. The lush flavors of this wine are what makes it so approachable and food friendly. Enticing aromas of citrus and pear in the bouquet draw you in, while on the palate, flavors of vanilla spice appear in the forefront. The refreshing nuances of ripe melon and pineapple fill the mouth and carry right through to the finish. For those of you considering some grilled swordfish, halibut or chicken this weekend, the Newton Red Label Chardonnay will complete the picture.

2010 Heitz Cellar Napa Cabernet Sauvignon

Staying right within Napa, we have the 2010 Heitz Cellar Napa Cabernet Sauvignon ($49.99). While most California producers are on more recent vintages, Heitz Cellar typically holds back their releases and the extra couple of years of bottle-age is definitely noticeable. Elegant and well proportioned, this Cabernet with its bouquet of violets and ripe red fruit on the nose immediately leads into a full and firm feel in the mouth. Tenderloin, Rib-eye, NY Strip or Delmonico steaks easily come to mind when tasting this incredible Napa Cabernet. So fire up the grill, open a bottle and you are set for the weekend.

2015 Pelle Rose Menetou-Salon Morogues

While the last wine brings us out of the country, it is still a wine perfect to welcome summer — the 2015 Pelle Rose Menetou-Salon Morogues ($16.99). Just sitting in the glass, this wine is an inviting sight with its pale pink color and delicate floral bouquet. Made from 100% Pinot Noir grape, this Rosé has a fresh berry flavor up front and a slightly dry finish perfect for your warm evenings on the patio and tailor-made for a dinner of cold poached salmon or the mélange of flavors in a steak salad.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Come taste all three of these wines this Saturday, May 28th from 1:00-5:00PM while you stop in to stock up on the rest of your Memorial Day supplies. As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order these wines by clicking on their names or pictures here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.
