The Indispensable 2014 Chateau de Pez

2014 Chateau de Pez

While the left bank of Bordeaux is home to some of the world's most cellerable wines, it is also home to many approachable wines perfect for current drinking. The 2014 Château de Pez ($48.99) from the appellation of Saint Estephe is one of those wines.

Chateau de Pez is one of the oldest Bordeaux wine making estates in the Saint-Estephe appellation going all the way back to 1452. Like many of the vineyards in the Medoc, Chateau De Pez passed through countless owners until it was most recently purchased in 1995 by Jean-Claude Rouzaud. Blessed with good natural drainage, the estate of Chateau De Pez is planted to a vine density of 6400 vines per hectare with an average age of 25 years.

All this brings us to the 2014 Château de Pez ($48.99). The vineyard of Chateau De Pez is mostly grown to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with some Merlot and a small amount of Petit Verdot. The nose first greets you with aromas of small dark cherries and candied fruit which rise from the glass. The palate welcomes a nice medium-bodied wine with fine tannins upon entry and shows off classic Saint Estephe characteristics with rich fruit and firm core. Supple and flavorful in the mouth with impressive rich fruit, this wine is solid on the tongue while it treats you to a variety of lively flavors before the fine tannins make a reappearance again at the finish. So take a break from domestic reds and reintroduce yourself to the wines of Bordeaux.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Here is your chance to see for yourself what this wine has to offer. Please join us this Saturday April 21st 1:00-5:00PM, to taste the 2014 Château de Pez ($48.99).

Great finds from Italy & California

2015 Abbazia di Novacella Sauvignon Blanc

Looking for unusual wines can bring us to every part of the world, and this weekend Francos Wine Merchants has two gems on our Tasting Schedule; please join us this Saturday April 14th 1:00-5:00PM for our weekly Wine Tasting.

Our first wine brings you to Northern Italy to Trentino Alto Adige which is in the Italian Alps on the border of Switzerland and Austria. Dotted with medieval castles and Renaissance palaces, this region is also home to many vineyards. Here we find the 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Sauvignon Blanc ($19.99). This white wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc where the vines grow in the gravelly soil which is found throughout the region. Fermentation in both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels provides you with the tropical fruit aromas that first greet you. Once on the palate, the wine doles out ripe flavors of honeydew melon and passion fruit. All this come to a clean finish with a slight note of nectarine. So if you have one of your recipes that highlight spring vegetables such as Pasta Primavera, this wine would pair perfectly.

2014 Seventy Five The Sum

Leaving Italy and traveling back to America, we end up in St Helena, California where Tuck Beckstoffer has continued the family tradition of winemaking. Here we present the 2014 Seventy Five The Sum ($21.99). This wine is a Bordeaux blend comprised of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being made up of Syrah and Petite Syrah. Full-bodied and multilayered, this wine shows off aromas of mixed berries and dark chocolate. On the tongue, flavors of dried blackcurrant and cherry glide seamlessly across the palate while notes of raspberry and roasted coffee bring you into a long, silky finish. So look for that Grass-fed Tomahawk steak in the butcher case and open up a bottle of The Sum and you will not be disappointed.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday April 14th 1:00-5:00PM, to taste the 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Sauvignon Blanc ($19.99) and the 2014 Seventy Five The Sum ($21.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order these wine by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Newton Day — Come to Play

2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay

Newton Vineyards has been giving us quality wines since it was founded in 1977. This weekend, Francos Wine Merchants will have two of their wines from Sonoma County open at our Wine Tasting Saturday April 7th 1:00-5:00PM..

Starting off we will have from Sonoma the 2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay ($19.99) (formerly known as Newton Red Label). The 2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay ($19.99) greets you with vibrant aromas of peach and honeysuckle as soon as the wine is poured into your glass. The peach aromas follow through with your first sip and once on the tongue flavors of baked apple along with subtle oak notes become prevalent. As the wine finishes up, one cannot help but notice the nice crispness with notes of minerality as it shows off its posh finish. So this is a good choice whether you are roasting some Cornish hens flavored boldly with rosemary, or perhaps flavored more subtly and gently with tarragon or lemon thyme.

2015 Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon

Next up also from Sonoma is the 2015 Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.99) (also formerly Newton Red Label). The dark aromas of blackberry and cassis are prominent on the nose of this fabulous effort sourced from several vineyards throughout Sonoma. The dark berry aroma continues on to the palate with blueberry and boysenberry notes which are highlighted along with an ample mouthfeel. The supple tannin core and rich finish leaves you dreaming of your next sip. So whether you are pan frying a Ribeye steak in garlic butter, or standing out by the grill on a cold spring night, this is the wine with which you want to enjoy your steak.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday April 7th 1:00-5:00PM, to taste the 2016 Newton Skyside Chardonnay ($19.99) and the 2015 Newton Skyside Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.99).

2014 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir

We can finally put winter behind us and what better way to welcome spring than with a selection of wines perfect for your Ham, Spring Lamb and early season vegetables. Alex will be pouring a selection of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from California, Oregon and Burgundy this Saturday, March 31st from 1:00-5:00PM.

The featured wine of the Tasting will be from Domaine Serene. Founded in 1989 by Grace and Ken Evenstad in the Dundee Hills region of the Willamette Valley, the Evenstad's have always had a deep appreciation for the wines of Burgundy and from early on had faith in Oregon as a growing region. They named the winery after their daughter Serene and their first vineyard on the estate was named after their son Mark Bradford Evenstad. Today Domaine Serene produces a variety of wines from several vineyard estates spanning the Willamette Valley all while practicing sustainable vineyard management and winemaking techniques intended to maximize the quality and ensure complex, balanced and elegant wines. We have just received shipment of the 2014 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir ($74.99) which Alex will be pouring on Saturday. Showing provocative notes of black current and dark cherry, this wine draws you in immediately. On the palate, flavors of blueberry come to light along with velvet tannins, depth and concentration all leading into a long weighted finish. One taste and you will see what this is the flagship wine of Domaine Serene.

Also being poured on Saturday are wines from Flowers Vineyard & Winery including the 2015 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($44.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($46.99). Is Spring a Myth? The 2015 True Myth Cabernet

2015 True Myth Cabernet Sauvignon

Another week, another Nor'easter which, at this rate, is becoming old hat and leaves us wondering if spring will ever arrive. There is however, one positive aspect in that we still have time to enjoy our heartier menus and heartier wines. Francos Wine Merchants will be tasting two sturdy reds and a fantastic white wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday March 24th 1:00-5:00PM.

Often overlooked by those focused in on Napa, Paso Robles — located 300 miles south of Napa — also offers some terrific wines and the 2015 True Myth Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.99) is one of them. This rich yet smooth Cabernet Sauvignon from the Niven Family is loaded with elegant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, pepper, and cassis. Once on the tongue flavors of dark red fruit with hints if cedar spice, cocoa and caramelized oak are realized. This Cabernet Sauvignon is not only very approachable, but is also an excellent example of how this grape grows to the unique terrain and climate of the Central Coast. So if the snow has melted enough to get to the grill, you may want to pair this wine with your first grilled steak of the season.

2015 Vina Cobos Felino Malbec

From California, we travel down to South America to Mendoza Argentina, where the 2015 Viña Cobos Felino Malbec ($18.99) is found. Deep red in color, this Malbec displays aromas of black fruit with notes of white pepper and cloves. On the palate, flavors of licorice and chocolate coat your taste buds as the wine's elegance and balance stands firm in your mouth. The bold tannins are at the core of this wine that lead into a long and persistent finish.

2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc

But if you are stubborn and want an escape — thoughts of sitting on your patio with the warm sun shining on you and the smell of spring flowers in the air — then the 2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc ($14.99) will transport you there. Hailing from Northern Burgundy, the small appellation of Saint-Bris is the only appellation where Sauvignon Blanc is allowed to grow in Burgundy. From vines grown in predominantly limestone soil, this wine has an incredible pale gold color. The bouquet offers up nuances of white fruit, which transitions into bright citrus upon aeration. Fresh and delicate in the mouth along with a touch of minerality and lively finish, this wine is going to be a perfect pairing for any white fish with Beurre Blanc sauce or lemon chicken recipe.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 24th 1:00-5:00pm to taste the 2015 True Myth Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.99), 2015 Viña Cobos Felino Malbec ($18.99), and the 2016 Bailly Lapierre Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc ($14.99).

2000 Fonseca Port - Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?

2000 Fonseca

After the third Nor'easter this month, it is apparent that winter intends to hold on for a bit. So why not fight fire with fire and extend the port drinking season as well? Francos Wine Merchants still has all our ports on sale including the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99) which we will be pouring at our weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, March 17th 1:00-5:00pm.

The venerable Port House of Fonseca Guimaraens was established in 1822 and is one of the standard bearers among the world's port houses. While the port house itself needs no introduction, the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99) is a "standout" vintage for them garnering a 96 rating from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Showing off a magnificent deep purple color, dense structure and intense concentration, the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99) has a reputation that cannot be surpassed. The bold, fortified flavors - blackberry, juniper berries and licorice - are all underpinned by very fine tannins, elegant texture, and just the right amount of acidity. All of these characteristics make this port one destined to be a classic.

2003 Croft Vintage Port

Do you know the Bishop of Norwich? There are many rules on the proper way to serve port, such as always passing the port to the left after pouring a glass for your neighbor to your right. The decanter (vintage port is always decanted because of the sediment) should never stop its clockwise travel around the table until all have been served. If the decanter should ever be stalled it is considered impolite to ask for it. Instead you ask the person monopolizing the decanter "Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?" If they are familiar with port etiquette they will realize their faux pas and pass the decanter along. If not and they are confused by your question you follow up by saying "He's a terribly good chap but he always forgets to pass the port." History is unclear which absentminded Bishop of Norwich is responsible for this particular rule of etiquette.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So, once again, please join us this Saturday, March 17th 1:00-5:00pm to taste the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99). Also being tasted is the 2003 Croft Vintage Port ($72.99). So be sure to stop in, and hopefully you will not be asked if you know the Bishop of Norwich!

As always, if you are unable to join us you can order this wine by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page, or browsing our complete inventory of Port.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Flower Power — Flowers Chardonnay & Pinot Noir

2015 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Horticultural Madness is in the air with the wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery. While the tulips and daffodils are battling the snow to bloom, the savings with Flowers has definitely blossomed with two of their wines on sale this month — the 2015 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($44.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($46.99). We will be pouring both of these wines at our weekly Wine Tasting Saturday March 10th, 1:00-5:00PM.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to go back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

One of their prized wines is the 2015 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($44.99) which uses organic and sustainable farming practices. They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. The wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific. So if you are looking for full-flavored Chardonnay then your search begins and ends with the 2015 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($44.99).

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($46.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry and spice representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your spring menus as the weather starts to warm.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 10th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($44.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($46.99).

2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin

2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin

While there may be another dip in temperatures or snow storm left in this winter, it's not too early to start thinking about spring lamb recipes that are around the corner. The villages of Burgundy have many options as do the wines of Joseph Drouhin and we will be tasting one of his most outstanding wines this Saturday, March 3rd 1:00-5:00PM — the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99).

First a little background on the region and of Joseph Drouhin. Burgundy is one of the most complex winemaking regions in the world with a rich history of viticulture dating back to the first century. Seeing opportunity, in 1880, Joseph Drouhin at the youthful age of 22 settled in Beaune and put all his focus into building his reputation. His love of wine became a passion he passed down to each new generation of his family. Assembled parcel by parcel over the years, today properties of Joseph Drouhin comprise 73 hectares of vineyards in Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis. It is one of the most important domaines in Burgundy, with more than two thirds of the vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Crus. The House of Joseph Drouhin is now run by Joseph's four grandchildren who carry on the tradition started by their grandfather.

This brings us to our featured wine for the week, the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99). The village of Gevrey Chambertin almost needs no introduction as some of the most prized Burgundies hail from here. This wine of Joseph Drouhin's greets you with an intense nose of prominent fruit including dark cherry and wild blackberry that immediately rise from the glass with an underlying hint of damp earthiness. On the palate the flavors of mild spice such as nutmeg and woodsy mushroom tantalize the tongue, all brought together by the wine's delicate tannins. So whether you are eyeing that Crown Roast at the butcher or thinking about Roast Lamb season that is about to be upon us, this is the wine you want to accompany your meal.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 3rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we again sample the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99). You can see the complete list of the family's wines by clicking on the Joseph Drouhin Wines link here or on our Home Page.

2015 Masciarelli Redux

2015 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

In all the years we have been sending out emails, never before have we sent out an email about the same wine two weeks in a row. But the 2015 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) has been such a hit, we felt the need to tell you about it once again.

As usual, Presidents' Day coincides with start of school vacation and it is a quiet weekend for business. But during a three day weekend when half the population is out of town we sold 30 cases of the 2015 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) and we have just received another shipment this week. The wine is good, even the fragrance is unusually noticeable. The wine is mid-weight and versatile. We all come home late on occasion to a quick meal of pizza or some leftovers. Or perhaps you are throwing together a simple meal and you are looking for a casual wine to match. This wine is all that, plus it is estate bottled, delicious and priced right.

For those of you who may have missed last week's email about this wine, the region of Abruzzo is due east of Rome. Made from 100% Montepulciano, this small, estate bottled wine has a bright ruby red color and a bouquet of violets and red cherry that immediately draws you in and is only enhanced once the wine hits your palate.

The 2015 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) is on sale at $10.99 per bottle, but due to the incredible response to this wine we will reduce the price to $9.99 per bottle if purchased by the Case (12 bottles). This adjustment — to $119.88 for the case — will be made before your order is processed, if not shown at the time you place the order.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, February 24th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we again sample the 2015 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo ($10.99) ($9.99 by the case).

Annual Port Sale — Warm up your Winter

2000 Fonseca 2003 Taylor Fladgate

February is here, the ground hog has seen his shadow and 40 degree days are considered warm. But Francos Wine Merchants has a terrific suggestion on how to shake off the chill on these gray days and cold nights — a glass of Vintage Port.

First a little background on Vintage Port. Vintage Port is one of the world's great iconic wines. Vintage Port represents the very best produce of a single outstanding year. It remains in vat for only about two years and after that it is aged in the bottle. Although Vintage Ports can be enjoyed when young, they will improve for many decades in the cellar and are among the most long-lasting of all wines.

Port wine begins life in much the same way as other wines. Around mid-September, the grapes are picked and harvested by hand from a wide range of traditional grape varieties, most of them native to Portugal's Douro Valley. The best known red varieties include the Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Amarela and Tinto Cão but in total there are around thirty types of Port grape. Most of these varieties have relatively small thick-skinned berries which produce the dense concentrated must (grape juice) needed to make Port. During fermentation about half of the natural sugar of the grape juice turns into alcohol by fermentation. At this point the wine maker starts the fortification process which is when a very clean young wine brandy is added. The addition of the spirit raises the strength of the wine to a level where the yeasts responsible for fermentation can no longer survive. The fermentation stops before all the sugar in the juice has been turned into alcohol and some of the natural sweetness of the grape is thus preserved in the finished wine.

2003 Delaforce 2003 Croft Vintage Port

Our inventory represents the best that Portugal has to offer from the major Port Houses including Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca, Croft, Grahams and Delaforce. Of special note in our Annual Port Sale are the 2000 Fonseca ($99.99), the 2003 Taylor Fladgate ($99.99), the 2003 Delaforce ($61.99) and the 2003 Croft Vintage Port ($72.99). For those of you looking for large format bottles, we have the 2000 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port ($184.99). And for those who prefer something for a small romantic evening for two, we have the 2007 Graham's ($51.99) in a half bottle (375ml) size. You can see our entire inventory of Port (both Vintage and Non-vintage) by clicking on the Port link here or on our Home Page.

Super Saturday Superiore — 2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba

2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Bricco Boschis Cuculo Superiore

Super Bowl Weekend is here and whether you are hosting a large party to cheer on the Eagles and/or Patriots, or just going to enjoy the game at home sporting your team's colors, Francos Wine Merchants is here to help you along.

While there are many options for food on Super Bowl Sunday, if you stray away from the traditional choices you may just enjoy our newest arrival — the 2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Bricco Boschis Cuculo Superiore ($30.99). Crafted from 100% Barbera, this wine offers fuller body, aromas and flavor than typical Barberas. So much of this can be attributed to the calcareous clay soils and west-southwest exposure of the vineyards. This particular Barbera is released a year later than its counterparts which gives it the weight, purity and balance of a wine twice its size. Garnering a solid 91+ points from Parker, this wine will be perfect if you stray away from the Chili and instead decide to braise some short ribs in tomato and serve it over Rigatoni.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday February 3rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our guest host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours the 2015 Cavallotto Barbera d'Alba Bricco Boschis Cuculo Superiore ($30.99). As always, you can read more about this wine as well as order by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Super Bowl Sunday is full of options, so if you decide to instead whip up a batch of Manhattans or perhaps an Old Fashioned to start off the party, Francos has a wide selection of Bourbon and Rye which can all be found on our Small Batch American Whiskey link. Should you decide on Nachos or to set up a Taco Bar and serve up some Margaritas, check out our selection of Tequila by using the link here or simply typing "Tequila" in the search field.

Super Bowl Sunday: Just a reminder that Francos Wine Merchants will be open 12:00-5:00PM on Super Bowl Sunday for any of your last minute Super Bowl party needs.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Guy Breton Cuvée Marylou

2016 Guy Breton Beaujolais Villages Cuvee Marylou

As we close out the month of January you may want to take a closer look at one of our featured wines of the month. Guy Breton is known throughout the appellations of Morgon and Régnié for his winemaking and his 2016 Guy Breton Beaujolais Villages Cuvée Marylou ($23.99) is no exception to his fine work.

First a little background: Guy Breton took over the family domaine from his grandfather in 1986. Up until that point the family was selling their fruit to the large cooperative wineries which dominated the region, and were turning the wines of Beaujolais into one-dimensional wines lacking the true expression of the native terroir. Working along with other traditional winemakers of the region such as Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Jean Foillard, these men were soon dubbed the "Gang of Four". The Gang called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration.

This brings us to the 2016 Guy Breton Beaujolais Villages Cuvée Marylou ($23.99). Named after his daughter, it is the wine's ruby color from the Gamay grape that first draws you in followed quickly by the subtle fruit on the nose. Practicing organic farming, this wine is from one of Guy Breton's 2.5 acre properties where the vines are at least 45 years in age and grown in soil mostly made up of granite and rocks. With a modest 12.5% alcohol, this wine is not only well structured, but also easy to drink and a perfect pairing for your casual winter menus.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, January 27th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Guy Breton Beaujolais Villages Cuvée Marylou ($23.99).

As always, you can read more about this wine as well as order by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

You may also want to take advantage of the small amount of the 2016 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($34.99) that we have left in stock. This flagship wine of Guy Breton is from 80 year old vines; it is juicy with ripe tannins and is definitely worth a look.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Warm up your Menus with 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo

2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo

While the temperature refuses to budge you can always warm up your evening with a great bottle of wine. Francos Wine Merchants recently received a shipment of the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99) and it would be a perfect match for many of your winter menus.

The history of Vietti Winery traces back to the 19th Century, but it is at the beginning of the 20th century when Vietti started bottling its own wine. Patriarch Mario Vietti in 1919 slowly transformed the family farm into a grape-growing and wine production business. By 1953 Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti's husband) cultivated and grew the Vietti Winery to one of the top-level producers in Piemonte and was one of the first wineries to export to the USA market.

Made from 100% Nebbiolo and offering a modest 13.5% alcohol, vinification of the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99) comes from different vineyards from the Langhe/Barolo area. For all intents and purposes the Vietti Perbacco is a declassified Barolo. Aged approximately 2 years in oak and blended in steel tanks prior to bottling, this wine offers up a mid-weight style perfect for food pairing. With generous fruit and spices, this wine shows complexity and elegance without giving up any of its intensity of dark fruit, spice and licorice. This wine would be the perfect choice for hearty stews, roasted red meats and aged cheeses.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, January 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99).

As always, you can read more about this wine as well as order by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

In the blink of an eye we are in mid-January and we take a turn away from the rich, full flavored meals of the holidays and instead turn to meals with a few fresh ingredients. We also make a turn with our wines looking for ones that are simple and straightforward in flavor and one such wine is one of our January Cellar Specials.

Francos Wine Merchants is always excited when a wine from winemaker Jean-Paul Brun is in stock, and currently we have his 2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99). Jean-Paul Brun is one of the most revered winemakers in the appellation working only in a natural fashion. This means he uses no pesticides in the vineyards and only hand picks his grapes when ready to harvest. But his natural ways of winemaking don't stop at just the farming; it also carries over into production. He does not use industrial yeasts, but rather uses only indigenous yeasts. He also believes that wine drinks best at a lower degree of alcohol and therefore sees no need to systematically add sugar to obtain certain levels of alcohol. His wines are made to be pleasurable with the flavors of the true fruit shining through.

Bright yellow with flavors of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, this Chardonnay offers flavors that come directly from the clay and limestone soil from which the vines grow. The ripe pear and apple flavors are followed by bright acidity and a clean taste that are obtained from their stainless steel aging. Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing for everything from a Roast Chicken with a simple Lemon/Butter/Thyme marinade to easy mid-week meals of Baked Chicken Thighs on a simple mirepoix drizzled with a favor infused olive oil.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday January 13th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99).

As always, you can read more about this wine as well as order by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Practicing organic farming, this wine is from one of Guy Breton's 2.5 acre properties where the vines are at least 45 years in age and grown in soil mostly made up of granite and rocks. With a modest 12.5% alcohol, this wine is not only well structured but easy to drink.

Next up is the 2014 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($25.99). Made from 100% Nebbiolo and offering a modest 13.5% alcohol, vinification of this wine is comprised of different vineyards from the Langhe/ Barolo area. For all intents and purposes the Vietti Perbacco is a declassified Barolo. Aged approximately 2 years in oak and blended in steel tanks prior to bottling, this wine offers up a mid-weight style perfect for food pairing. This wine would be the perfect choice for the hearty stews and aged cheeses of winter.

2014 Chateau Gloria Saint-Julien 2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

If you feel like stepping it up a notch, the 2014 Château Gloria Saint-Julien ($42.99) is for you. Château Gloria is a consistently excellent wine from Saint-Julien. Its deep inky purple color gives one an idea of the wine's immense and flavorful profile. A bouquet rich in red and black currant, blackberry, licorice, and spice betrays the full-bodied and rich palate, which is deep and layered and beautifully textured. So order that Rib Roast from the butcher and pop open a bottle.

And if you need a casual white wine to get you through some of your favorite fish or chicken recipes, the 2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99) could not be more perfect. Schooled in the craft of natural farming/production methods, Jean Paul Brun uses only natural yeast, no pesticides, and no added sulfites. Creamy and flavorful, the Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay perfectly balances lively tropical and citrus fruit notes with smooth vanilla, leading to a long, elegant finish.

As always, you can order any of these wines by clicking on the wine name or picture in this email, or in the Cellar Specials section of our Home Page.

Sparkling Selections for New Year's

 Krug Grande Cuvee

When it comes to ushering in the New Year, Champagne is the first image to come to mind. This year, Francos Wine Merchants has an array of Champagne, Prosecco and Other Sparkling Wines on sale and ready to chill as the clock approaches midnight.

Our selection begins with Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99) where back in 1843 founder Joseph Krug set out to create a Champagne of absolute elegance. This delicious cuvee is a blending of many vintages which is what gives this Champagne its uniqueness. The deep golden color, fine vivacious bubbles and aromas of marzipan and gingerbread with hints of citrus is where this champagne starts. Once in the mouth, flavors of hazelnut, almonds and brioche abound. What makes this cuvee stand out from the others is a blend of 120 wines from ten or more different vintages and three grape varieties. This is definitely our pick to ring in 2018.

Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve Champagne Veuve Clicquot Brut Rose

We also are offering on sale the Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve ($44.99) with vibrant aromas of fresh apple and pear. If you prefer a Rosé Champagne with bright flavors of strawberry and raspberry, we have three selections: the Champagne Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé ($61.99), the Billecart Salmon Brut Rosé ($74.99) and the Schramsberg Brut Rosé ($36.99).

Billecart Salmon Brut Rose Schramsberg Brut Rose

2015 Joseph Drouhin Burgundy Tasting

2015 Joseph Drouhin Meursault 2015 Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet

If you have never treated yourself to a comprehensive tasting of what the Burgundy region of France has to offer, then here is your chance. We recently received a large shipment of 2015 Joseph Drouhin Burgundy and we will have a selection of them open this weekend.

Please join us this Saturday, December 16th from 1:00-5:00PM for a very special Tasting event. We have as our host Mr. Bruce Cole, National Sales Director for Dreyfus Ashby, who imports the wines of Joseph Drouhin.

2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin 2015 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny

Burgundy, France is one of the most complex winemaking regions in the world with a rich history of viticulture dating back to the first century. Seeing opportunity, in 1880, Joseph Drouhin at the youthful age of 22 settled in Beaune and put all his focus into building his reputation. His love of wine became a passion he passed down to each new generation of Drouhins.

2015 Joseph Drouhin Vosne Romanee 2015 Joseph Drouhin Nuits St. Georges Proces 1er Cru

Wines to be opened at Saturday's Tasting include the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Meursault ($53.99), 2015 Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet ($59.99), 2015 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin ($58.99), 2015 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny ($75.99), 2015 Joseph Drouhin Vosne Romanée ($89.99), and the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Nuits St. Georges Proces 1er Cru ($105.99).

More than just Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the various regions, terrains and terroir of the many villages of Burgundy give both of these grapes their own individual and unique characteristics and personalities. If you have never had the chance to taste these different regions side by side, then don't miss this opportunity.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday December 16th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the wines of Joseph Drouhin with our special host Mr. Bruce Cole, National Sales Director for Dreyfus Ashby.

December Arrives with 2016 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

As we get deeper into the Holiday Season we are constantly seeking out wines that, at a comfortable price point, can cover both small and large gatherings. Such is the case with this fabulous Pinot Noir from Mendocino Ridge that just arrived at our doorstep this week.

2016 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

The 2016 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) hails from Mendocino Ridge. This rather extreme coastal site in Northern California resides just north of the Sonoma Coast border and immediately southwest of the Anderson Valley. Grapes grown at this elevation produce low yields and intense concentration that are overall refreshing. The climate produces smaller berries and thick skins on the fruit which makes for flavors with deep tones and a mouthwatering aftertaste. This richly colored wine has an intense nose of black cherries and heirloom plum all along a forest floor base flavor. In the mouth, the nuances of pomegranate and hint of persimmon are balanced out by a long, mineral finish. As you think of any slow-cooked roasts for the holiday, this is the wine you want to consider serving.

2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday, December 9th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) along with the return of the 2016 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99). Creamy and flavorful, this Chardonnay from the Beaujolais offers lively tropical and citrus fruit notes with smooth vanilla all leading into an elegant finish, and is an excellent wine to use as a "party pour" for any holiday gatherings you may have this season.

Holiday Gift Giving: Whether you know what you are looking for or if you need assistance, Francos Wine Merchants is here to help. Gifts for wine lovers can be found on both our Older Vintage Bordeaux or Jadot Burgundy links, or if you have a spirits lover be sure to check out our Single Malt Scotches and Small Batch American Whiskey links.

In the mouth this sparkling wine is well cut and firm with a slight smoky underpinning on the finish. All this is what makes the Taittinger Brut La Francaise a staple at the holiday and the perfect way to start off any entertaining event you may be hosting over the holidays.

A Saturday in Sicily

2015 Tasca Lamuri Nero d'Avola

Now that comfort food weather has begun to move in, the hunt for casual drinking wines starts. Francos Wine Merchants has two excellent wines from Sicily that are very versatile and will work with a variety of your autumn menus. We will be tasting both of these wine this Saturday, November 11th 1:00-5:00PM.

Located in the mountainous heart of Sicily we find the 2015 Tasca Lamuri Nero d'Avola ($16.99). Owned by the Tasca d'Almerita family since 1837, this wine made from 100% Nero d'Avola grows wonderfully in the rich volcanic soil found throughout Sicily. Lamuri offers up lush aromas of black cherry, vanilla and wild herbs on the nose. Once on the palate the velvety tannins and bright acidity make for an elegant and expressive wine that is sure to please any crowd. This wine would pair perfectly with a Bolognese sauce, or any traditional pasta dish.

2014 Alta Mora Rosso

Staying on the island of Sicily but moving a little closer to Mount Etna, brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano have taken another native Sicilian grape, Nerello Mascalese, and transformed it into a superbly made red wine, the 2014 Alta Mora Rosso ($22.99). Their 12 hectares of vines on the slopes of Mount Etna allow this indigenous grape to ripen fully and give us a wine that is both tempered and elegant. The bright ruby color is what first reels you in followed up by aromatic intensity. The bouquet of wild berries and cassis is enticing and the six months in oak casks helps bring out the tobacco and dry earth flavors. Carrying good structure and weight this wine can easily stand up to most any cut of beef roasted, grilled or braised and, if you make use of all the fall root vegetables that are arriving at the local farmers markets, you have a real winner. This wine with its wonderful array of flavors is easily the best wine under $25 in the store.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday November 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Tasca Lamuri Nero d'Avola ($16.99) and the 2014 Alta Mora Rosso ($22.99).

As always, you can order any of the wines we feature by clicking on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Sensational Spottswoode Estates - Come Taste the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon & 2016 Sauvignon Blanc

2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc

What better way to start off November than with a Wine Tasting from one of California's most well-known Estates? Please join us Saturday November 4th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome back Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Director of Slocum & Sons to our store to pour the wines of Spottswoode Estates.

Spottswoode Estates, founded in 1882, was purchased by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972 and today is run by daughters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak. Situated on the western edge of St. Helena at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, the Spottswoode terroir — with its clay loam, superb drainage and cool maritime breezes — is an ideal place for growing. Around forty acres total, most is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Spottswoode Estates has been organically farmed since 1985 and certified organic since 1992.

2014 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Starting off, we will whet your appetite with the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99). This classically styled Sauvignon Blanc has layers of flavor offering up nuances of white peach, guava and nectarine. This wine has surprising complexity and the lemon meringue creaminess in the mouth is juxtaposed with its bright freshness and vivacity. Expressive, balanced and sophisticated, this wine is perfect for some late season Fish en Papillote cooked on the grill.

Moving on, we come to the jewel of Spottswoode Estates, the newly arrived 2014 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($199.99). Given a 96+ rating from Robert Parker the 2014 Vintage of this fabulous wine is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple in color, this wine offers up notes of blueberries and blackcurrant with hints of spice that are constantly evolving. Rich, concentrated and full-bodied with layers of fruit, this wine builds on the palate while the tannins coat your mouth and climaxes with a long and intense finish. Le Petit Vin d'Avril — A New Rhone Classic

 Le Petit Vin D'Avril

The Rhone Valley offers us everything from simple Cote du Rhone to classic Chateauneuf du Pape but the Avril Family of Clos de Papes fame has something a little different to offer — Le Petit Vin D'Avril ($17.99).

The Avril family has been making wine since the 18th century. Following in his father's footsteps, Paul-Vincent Avril trained in Dijon and then went on to join the family business. Working diligently to produce their family's famous Chateauneuf de Pape, Paul started to produce an everyday non-vintage wine which has now become a perennial favorite. Le Petit Vin d'Avril is affectionately known as "Big Nose Red" in reference to the hand-sketched character on the label with his nose enjoying the aroma of this delicious but simple wine.

Le Petit Vin D'Avril ($17.99) is a Rhone styled blend loaded with deep dark flavors of black fruit and pepper for which Rhone wines are known. Juicy with lots of red cherry flavor, this wine shows classic flavors associated with the blend of Grenache, Syrah, Merlot and Carignan. This wine has a deep, rich color which, along with the great blend of flavors, makes it an easy wine to drink as well as to pair with some of your simple autumn menus. So whether you are making a casual Tuesday night dinner of sausage & peppers or an easy Flat Iron Steak with sautéed mushroom and onions, this wine will make for a perfect pairing.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday October 28th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the Le Petit Vin D'Avril ($17.99).

2013 Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon — A Napa Gem

Napa Valley is the heart of California's Wine Country, and with all the terrible loss we have seen from California this week it seems like a good time to support those who work and live in one of the most picturesque parts of California.

2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

While both Rich and Leslie Frank's careers are in the Television Industry, it was their love of Napa Valley wines that brought them together to form Frank Family Vineyards. The original stone winery on this historic property was founded in 1884 and is still standing to this day. The property used to be part of the Larkmead Winery (which is located nearby) and was purchased by Rich Frank in 1990

The 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) is a varietal composition of 80% Cabernet, 13% Merlot with the balance split evenly between Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. The 2013 growing season produced a wine of beautiful elegance with an incredible dark ruby/purple color and nuances of blueberry and black raspberry fruit in the mouth. This wine is full-bodied with primary flavors of berries and dark chocolate which become apparent as the wine opens up. Drinkable now, this wine should continue to evolve gracefully and improve over the next 10 to 15 years. What is perfect about this time of year is that the days are sunny and warm but the nights cool off quickly and make it perfect to enjoy a wine with a little more weight. So our suggestion is to visit your local butcher and peruse the selection of full flavored Ribeye or Tomahawk steaks and pair it with the fabulous 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99).

Saturday Wine Tasting: : Please join us on Saturday October 14th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99). As always, you can order any of the wines we feature by clicking on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2014 Alta Mora Rosso — Sicily's Mount Etna Offers up a Surprising Red

2014 Alta Mora Rosso

While Summer is hanging on, at some point Autumn will win over and the cool nights will have us searching for red wines appropriate for both temperatures and time of year. Francos Wine Merchants received such a wine in a recent shipment that hails from Sicily's Mount Etna region.

Let us introduce to you the 2014 Alta Mora Rosso ($22.99) hailing from Etna, Sicily. Brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano have taken the native grape variety called Nerello Mascalese and crafted it into a delicious red wine. Their vineyard is located on the slopes of Mount Etna on about 12 hectares of vines at an altitude of about 600-800 meters above sea level. This allows the Nerello Mascalese to ripen fully and give us a wine that is tempered and elegant.

Grapes are harvested and blended from three separate vineyards, Verzella, Pietramarina and Feudo di Mezzo with only 23,500 bottles produced. Offering up a bright ruby color and aromatic intensity, the bouquet of wild berry and cassis is what first reels you in. Aged in large oak casks for only six months really allows for the true flavor of the grape to shine. Reflecting the pumice laden soil of the region, this wine is intense with flavors of tobacco and dry earth. Carrying good structure and weight, this wine can easily stand up to most any cut of beef, roasted or grilled. But should you happen to be perusing the local farmers market and seeing all the late season vegetables, something like a warm and hearty Ratatouille or even a recipe of sausage in a fresh tomato/basil coulis, would make this wine absolutely shine.

For collectors: October arrives this weekend which means many new wine releases will be on the way. Our first arrival of the season is the 2014 Duclot Collection. This special set of eight Bordeaux includes one of each of Lafite, Mouton, Haut Brion, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Mission Haut Brion, Petrus and Yquem. These wines are some of the most prized in all of Bordeaux. The set is packaged in a black lacquered, polished wood, latched case and is worth a look even if only to dream.

Saturday Wine Tasting: : So please join us on Saturday September 30th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2014 Alta Mora Rosso ($22.99).

Please join us Saturday September 23rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we are joined by one of our favorite hosts, Mr. Alex Meier-Tompkins, Fine Wine Director at Slocum & Sons as we taste through the Mount Eden Portfolio.

Mount Eden Vineyards was originally planted by Martin Ray in the early 1940s where he started with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and then added Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the 1950s. Today the winery is owned and operated by husband and wife team of Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson. Then in 2007 Mount Eden acquired an additional 55 acres in the Saratoga foothills which was christened Domaine Eden and these wines are quickly becoming stars in their own right.

Spottswoode Cabernet & Sauvignon Blanc — A Tasting you don't want to miss

2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc

What better way for Francos Wine Merchants to start off September than with a fabulous Wine Tasting from one of California's most celebrated vineyards, Spottswoode Estates?

Spottswoode Estates, founded in 1882, was purchased by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972 and today is run by daughters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak. Situated on the western edge of St. Helena at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, the Spottswoode terrior — with its clay loam, superb drainage and cool maritime breezes — is an ideal place for growing. Around forty acres total, most is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Spottswoode Estates has been organically farmed since 1985 and certified organic since 1992.

Starting off, we will first be pouring the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99).

2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Moving on, we come to the jewel of Spottswoode Estates, the 2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($199.99). Garnering a 99+ rating from Robert Parker, this vintage of Spottswoode Cabernet seems to be their finest effort to date. Extremely sought after and extremely finite, this wine exudes both power and elegance with every sip. With plenty of ripe red berry fruit and notes of mocha, carob and butterscotch, this wine is dense and focused. The strong backbone of this wine along with its discernable tannins are what makes this wine a hallmark of what will be another long-lived collectible wine from Spottswoode Estates. For you true lovers of classic California Cabernet Sauvignon, it does not get much better than this.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 16th, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99) and the 2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($199.99). Please don't miss this opportunity to taste these extraordinary wines. Magnificent Malbec: 2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block

2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block Malbec

Even though September's weather may make the temperature dip a bit, it is not all bad news. While it may be only a few degrees difference, the drop makes for a chilly evening which also means we can start turning back to our more full-flavored red wines and Francos Wine Merchants has the perfect one for you.

If you travel down to Argentina to the well-known wine region of Mendoza you will eventually come to the majestic Andes. At the foot of the Andes at an elevation of 4,000 feet Alejandro Sejanovich and Jeff Mausbach found the right conditions to produce the 2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block Malbec ($16.99)). Meaning "black wine" in Spanish, TintoNegro is known for its dark, blackish color and after one look as you pour this wine into your glass, there is no mistaking that this is definitely a TintoNegro. Medium bodied and silky, this wine has a nice, tight core and flavors of dark cherry. The rocky lime stone soil (from which the name "Limestone Block" comes) lends itself to the finely grained tannins in this wine. The bright and lively flavor in your mouth and the unique vinification techniques showcase the concentration and complexity of this celebrated grape. All these characteristics ease off to a long finish and one instantly thinks of a simple Skirt Steak on the grill to accompany this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block Malbec ($16.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our wine tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Don't miss our 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting

2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon

This August uncharacteristically has brought us quite a few evenings on the cooler side. While we are hopefully weeks away from a fire in the fireplace, the cool weather has offered a few opportunities for a full flavored Cabernet Sauvignon to be served.

While Napa always has plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon to offer, let's not forget that traveling northwest a bit, the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County also offers many choices in Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery in picturesque Alexander Valley is one such producer. Since 1972 Jordan Vineyards has been serving up some of the finest wines that California has to offer. Their 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($61.99) is another home run for this winery founded by Tom and Sally Jordan.

Every vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon strives to achieve that perfect balance of fruit and tannins and the 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($61.99), under the watchful eye of Winemaker John Jordan and Rob Davis, is no exception. Upon uncorking the bottle you are met with powerful aromas of cassis and black currants, as well as an intense fragrance of blackberries. Pour it in your glass and beautiful floral notes rise up to greet your olfactory senses and entice you even more. Your first sip reveals a mouthful of ripe cherry flavor surrounded by a solid core that is unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich and seductive flavors are carefully entwined with the fine tannins imparted by the aging in new French oak barrels. So our suggestion is to peruse the meat case at the local butcher and pick out a well aged porterhouse, a perfectly marbled Ribeye, or a full flavored T-bone steak and then fire up the grill. Once that is done the 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($61.99) will do the rest.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday August 19th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($61.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our Saturday Wine Tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner — secretive gem from the Italian Alps

2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner

While the warm evenings of August fall upon us, why not enjoy a white wine grown in the cool climate of the Italian Alps. The 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner ($19.99) is such a wine and perfect for summer nights.

As you travel to northern Italy and into the region of Trentino and the appellation of Alto Adige, you come to the little burg of Novacella in the Isarco River Valley. Here Abbazia di Novacella has been known for producing world class white wine for centuries. Their reputation as a winery is stellar and, in addition to winemaking, there is a small school devoted primarily to the study of viticulture.

But let is return to one of their most prized wines, the 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner ($19.99). While not a very well-known grape you will be fascinated by this wine produced on this centuries old property. What first captures your attention are the nutty/floral characteristics that are found on the nose of this wine. Once on the palate you are treated to flavors of green fruit with overtones of almond and nutmeg. It is no surprise that fruits and vegetables are also farmed on the property all of which take on earthy flavors from the gravelly marine soil. The wine is crisp and clean mostly due to being vinified in stainless steel tanks and the flavor is kept true by organic farming practices and the use of indigenous yeasts. Cold summer pasta dishes, grilled white fishes with herbs fresh from the garden or even some tilapia garnished with a fresh garden salsa with a hint of spice would all pair perfectly with this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on this Saturday August 12th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner ($19.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our Saturday Wine Tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Producer Michel Reverdy's family has been making wines in the Loire for centuries and they produce two fabulous wines that are perfect for summer entertaining. 2015 Minet Pouilly Fumé — Lobsters Beware!

The end of June has arrived, with the 4th of July and the rest of the summer ahead of us. As the temperature rises, our taste buds crave wines that are crisp and refreshing. Francos Wine Merchants does its best to seek out these types of wines, one of which we will be pouring this weekend at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes

A Kermit Lynch Import, the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($20.99) is a gem from the eastern side of the Loire Valley. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc this wine from the appellation of Pouilly Fumé is quite distinctive from the neighboring villages of the Loire, mostly due to the clay/limestone soil and the flavor it imparts. This wine has a mouth-watering acidity, depth of flavor and fleshy texture that is not only dry and crisp, but also a perfect pairing for any lobster bake or seafood menus you may be serving. This wine with its refreshing flavor will definitely have you pouring yourself another glass.

2015 Les Heretiques

Also being poured on Saturday is the 2015 Les Hérétiques ($8.99), a fabulous effort from the Languedoc. André Iché, who passed away in 2007, was an ardent disciple of natural wines and a pioneer of great wine in the Languedoc. Fortunately for the natural wine movement, his family continues his passion for natural wine making. Made from 100% Carignan grape, this wine is perfect as a casual red for your 4th of July barbeque and an excellent example of how a pioneer elevated the quality of the wines in this region.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday July 1st from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($20.99) and the 2015 Les Hérétiques ($8.99).

The Return - 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

Now that we have reached the official start of Summer, it is time to turn to wines that work for those warm summer evenings; wines that refresh both the mind and the palate. And, as it happens, one such wine from Kermit Lynch Imports has just arrived at Francos Wine Merchants' doorstep and we will be tasting it this weekend.

2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

Please join this Saturday, June 24th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($24.99) — a wine perfect for the rising mercury in the weeks ahead.

In the small village of Verdigny, a commune of Sancerre in the eastern Loire, the Hippolyte Reverdy family has been making wine for generations. In 1971 Michel Hippolyte joined his father; soon after, in 1983, he started working with Kermit Lynch bringing his wines to the forefront including the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($24.99). In true Kermit Lynch fashion, the vineyards of Hippolyte Reverdy see no pesticides; the yeasts are of indigenous nature and no extra sulfites are added. Very pure and fresh, this wine broadens itself once on the palate and you literally taste it from the moment it hits your lips until it trails off the back of your tongue. Oysters, clams or lobster create singular harmony with this fabulous effort, so not only is this wine perfect for the casual Sunday seafood dinner, but also is a candidate to bring along with you for any beach holiday you have planned.

2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rose 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes

Also of note from Kermit Lynch Imports is the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosé ($24.99). A little more finite than the Blanc, this wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir and, as weather turns warm, you can easily serve this wine with fish, hanger steak, veal or chicken. If you are a lover of Loire wines, Kermit Lynch also brings us the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($20.99), a wine also made from Sauvignon Blanc in the appellation of Pouilly Fumé yet quite distinctive from the neighboring village of Sancerre, mostly due to the clay/limestone soil. This wine has a mouth-watering acidity, depth of flavor and fleshy texture that will have you racing back for more.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday June 24th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($24.99), a fine example of what Kermit Lynch has to offer.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

June Tastings Continue with 2013 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet

With Father's Day creeping up on us, it may be time to start thinking about a gift for Dad. Right on the heels of our Caymus Cabernet Tasting last week, we now have another terrific Napa Cabernet to taste this weekend as well as a fantastic Chablis.

2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Please join this Saturday, June 10th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99) and the 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99).

Starting off in California, we have the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99). Famous for their world renowned wines, Dunn Vineyards is a winery that never disappoints. The cepage contains 85% Cabernet from their Howell Mountain vineyard and 15% Cabernet from their Napa Valley Vineyard. Dunn Napa is full of deep flavors of red berry and plum, and if you are looking for a powerhouse red that is full-bodied with a firmly structured core, then this is the wine to consider. While this wine is ready to drink right out of the gate, you can easily lay it down for 15 years or more. If you are local and have not yet visited South Avenue Butcher, and seen their selection of meat, our suggestion would be to purchase a bottle of the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and then make South Avenue Butcher your second stop and find the perfect cut of meat with which to pair.

2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Moving from California over to Burgundy and focusing on the region of Chablis, we come to the 2017 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99). A Tasting Duo - Caymus Cabernet & Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

While it's always a good day to taste Caymus Cabernet, we are even more excited to be pouring it this Saturday as we just received shipment of the last cases available in Connecticut, and then put it on Sale for $64.99.

2015 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Please join this Saturday, June 3rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours the 2015 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($74.99) as well as the 2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99).

This latest offering from Napa winemaking legend Chuck Wagner is a welcome sight whether you are a wine collector or simply a lover of full-bodied California Cabernets. The 2014 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon follows in the footsteps of its predecessors with its lush, rich flavors of dark Napa fruit all centered around a full-bodied core. Wine Advocate's Robert Parker gives this wine a solid 94 point rating giving credit to its dense opaque purple color and its flavors of blackberry and cassis. For those who can't wait, Parker talks about this wine's immediate accessibility, but says for those with patience, this wine has plenty of staying power and depth, going on to say you can easily drink it now as well as over the next 15 years. Now that summer is here, this wine is a reminder that it is tailor made for a big styled, simply seasoned steak such as an aged, well-marbled Rib-Eye grilled to perfection. Also, with Father's Day just a few weeks away, there would be no better gift for Dad.

2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

Also being poured on Saturday is the 2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99) from New Zealand. This outstanding Sauvignon Blanc exhibits aromas of honeysuckle and lemon verbena with a complex array of flavors of grapefruit and lime. This wine is perfect for any of your shellfish or lobster recipes which you may be using as a spring board for your summer menus.

Krug Grande Cuvée - A Mother's Day Tasting

Mother's Day is this weekend and we love to put out the Red Carpet for her. Whether you are serving Mom breakfast in bed, fixing her brunch, or simply want her to know that the day is all about her, there is no better way to do it than with champagne. The House of Krug has built its reputation on the fine quality Champagne that it produces and Francos Wine Merchants will have one of their champagnes open this weekend.

 Krug Grande Cuvee

Please join us Saturday May 13th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Joe Polizzi, Ambassador for Moet Hennessy, as he pours the Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99).

Since 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has embodied the utmost in excellence that Joseph Krug, founder of the House of Krug, sought to give his clients; a Champagne of extreme generosity and absolute elegance, the very best every year.

The Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99) captures your interest immediately with its deep golden color and fine vivacious bubbles. Almost instantly aromas of flowers, marzipan and gingerbread rise from the glass along with nuances of both ripe and citrus fruit. But it is on the tongue where this champagne captures your heart with its flavors of hazelnut, nougat, brioche and honey. It is the combination off all these characteristics that makes Krug one of the most sought after champagnes on any wine list.

Over 20 years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée with a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages and three different grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is assigned a six-digit number located on the back label that actually lets you go to their webpage and research the provenance of the very bottle you are drinking.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday, May 13th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome our host, Mr. Joe Polizzi, Ambassador for Moet Hennessy, as he pours and educates you on the Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99).

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

2015 La Val Albariño - Break into Summer

Traveling to North West Spain you will find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas that is home to many vineyards and wines, but mostly Albariño. Francos Wine Merchants has one that we recently came across and we will be pouring it at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2016 La Val Albarino

Please join us this Saturday May 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 La Val Albariño ($14.99). Established in 1985, Bodegas La Val produces its wines solely from their estate grown grapes. Winemaker Jose Maria Ureta keeps a careful eye on the 150 acres of Albariño in this typically very humid and rainy climate; hence the use of the pergola system which elevates the grape clusters, allowing more sun for ripening and also allowing air to circulate underneath the vines. Albariño is a thick-skinned grapes wich allows it to grow and prosper in this damp, maritime climate. The result of all this is a wine that shows aromas of lemon, melon and apple along with fresh green herbs. In the mouth this wine is fresh and zesty with notes of citrus and a touch of refreshing minerality followed by a long, clean, racy finish. As the warmer days approach, this wine will pair perfectly with almost any sword or white fish as well as a simple cold pasta salad with a lemon dressing. This wine would also be a good pairing for your favorite fish taco recipe.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Also on Saturday, we will be pouring the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99). Jean Paul has two plots of 50 year old vines that grow on this south-east facing in the Côte de Brouilly. Here the Gamay grape thrives in the granitic soil and produces a wine with dark berry fruit and lots of minerality. The exceptional, pretty aroma of fresh strawberries and raspberries is extremely floral, which leads into a very ripe palate that is very well-balanced. Jean-Paul's Côte is a medium bodied wine that is smooth, fresh and round. The low 12.5% alcohol allows the fresh flavors of this wine to show through without taking away from its live, energetic and vivid characteristics.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday, May 6th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we sample the 2016 La Val Albariño ($14.99) and the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99).
