2016 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino — December in Tuscany

2016 Il Poggione Brunello Di Montalcino

December is here and time to start your holiday shopping. There are only three shopping weekends on this year's calendar so there's no time to waste, and today our wine brings you to Italy and Tenuta Il Poggione.

The story of this famous vineyard brings us back to the end of the 19th century and Landowner Lavinio Franceschi who was fascinated by tales told by a local shepherd who moved his sheep between pastures around the hills of Montalcino that he visited and ended up purchasing land there. Franceschi's greatest achievement was to recognize the area's potential for vine cultivation and winemaking and to see the possibilities of the Sangiovese grapes that had always been grown in the area. Today, Tenuta Il Poggione is one of Montalcino's largest wineries with both vineyards and olive groves. Still owned by the Franceschi family, they have always practiced diversified farming by planting different crops on their land. More recently, solar panels have been installed on the winery's roof, reducing the environmental impact of its wines.

All this brings us to our feature wine, the 2016 Il Poggione Brunello Di Montalcino ($84.99). This star wine from the Tenuta Il Poggione is produced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes picked by hand from the vineyards' oldest vines. The 2016 Vintage of this wine first greets you with a beautiful dark and concentrated appearance followed by exuberant and expressive aromas of candied cherry with hints of tobacco and smoke. The ruby red color in the glass is very intense and flavors of red fruit notes burst forward in the mouth. While ready to enjoy now, the warm, well-balanced flavor is home to firm and youthful tannins that will mellow out with aging for those of you patient enough to wait. This wine is tailor made for red meats and even game meats as well as mature cheeses. So if there is a lover of classic Italian wines on your holiday gift list, the 2016 Il Poggione Brunello Di Montalcino ($84.99) will put a smile on their face.

2013 Louis Roederer Cristal — Celebrate your Turkey

2013 Louis Roederer Cristal

As your Thanksgiving menu comes together, you may want to consider making room for something special. The Champagne House of Louis Roederer has been making champagne since 1833 and his Cuvées have been sought after ever since.

Entrepreneur Louis Roederer took a visionary approach to his champagnes, forging the wine's unique style and character. After acquiring some grand cru vineyards in the mid-nineteenth century, Louis Roederer set out to make his mark in contrast to contemporary practices. While other Champagne houses purchased their grapes, Louis Roederer nurtured his own vines and familiarized himself with each parcel of his land. Louis Roederer's guiding principle was that all great wines depend on the quality of soil, and thus his mark was made.

All this leads us to our featured wine, the 2013 Louis Roederer Cristal ($249.99) which is the pinnacle of the Louis Roederer portfolio. The 2013 Vintage has set a new standard, receiving a 98 point rating from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate; thus we could not help but purchase all the remaining stock available in Connecticut. The aroma of clear honey and crisp, green orchard fruit are your first introduction to this amazing vintage. Starting with the previous vintage, the Louis Roederer Cristal is now produced from 100% organically farmed fruit marking a new chapter for Louis Roederer. This vintage has a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and winemaker Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon has once again outdone himself with the 2013 vintage. The broad, textural and muscular style of this champagne is ready to stand up to any celebration from Thanksgiving through the holiday season.

You can find the 2013 Louis Roederer Cristal ($249.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

Flowers Winery for Thanksgiving — The Perfect Bouquet

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Thanksgiving is a mere two weeks away and time to start thinking about the wine you will want to serve. Last week we presented to you a wine from Bordeaux and this week we come back to America and have a delicious offering from California's Sonoma Coast and Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to travel back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

Starting off, we first have the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99). Joan and Walt Flowers carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. Using only organic and sustainable farming practices, the wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific ocean. While the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) is a year round favorite to pair with many meals, it takes stage front and center when it comes to people looking for the perfect Chardonnay to pair with their Thanksgiving turkey.

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

For those of you who prefer a red wine with your Thanksgiving meal, many turn to Pinot Noir and there are few better choices than the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99). Also benefiting from the same cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing not only with your holiday turkey, but with many of the other flavors from vegetables and side dishes that are on the Thanksgiving table.

You can find both of these wines by visiting our Home Page where you can also listen to this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute where we also talk about both the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) and the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99).

2018 Chateau La Vieille Cure — Holidays on the Horizon

2018 Chateau La Vielle Cure

November has arrived and time to start thinking about wine for the holidays. Over the next few weeks we will have many suggestions, but today let's start in France.

Traveling to Bordeaux we land on the right bank of the Gironde River. Adjacent to the regions of Saint Emilion and Pomerol we find the appellation of Fronsac and the home of our featured wine, the 2018 Château La Vielle Cure ($34.99).

The 2018 Château La Vielle Cure ($34.99) is one of the benchmark producers on the right bank. Here the vines are an average of 40+ years old and thrive in the heavy limestone soil. This wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and a stronghold in the northern part of Bordeaux. Practicing sustainable farming methods and hand-harvesting as well as the use of indigenous yeast all factor into this wine. This wine first greets you with cedar notes highlighted by a hint of graphite and subtle tree bark scents. In the mouth flavors of ripe blackberries, stewed plumbs and cherry compote are enhanced by herbal notes of Sichuan pepper and star anise. The full-bodies palate is cloaked in oak with loads of exotic spice all supported by grainy tannins. Our recommendation is to stop in aand try a bottle today and we think you will agree that the 2018 Château La Vielle Cure ($34.99) is definitely a contender for your Thanksgiving table and you will see why Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave this wine a solid 92+ rating.

You can find this wine as one of our Cellar Specials for November as well as hear about it in this week's installment of Francos Wine Minute, both of which can be found on our Home Page.

Cantina Sociale de Gattinara - End October in Italy

2019 Cantina Sociale de Gattinara Vino Rosso

As we wind up October let's return to one of our favorite spots, Italy. As we head up north to Piedmont, we are reminded that this area is home to one of the noble grapes of the region, Nebbiolo.

Today we are in Gattinara, an appellation in the northwestern part of Piedmont. The wines here are required to contain at least 90% Nebbiolo grape.

Our Gattinara travels today bring us the 2019 Cantina Sociale de Gattinara Vino Rosso ($19.99). Founded in 1908, Catina Sociale de Gattinara is a group of independent wine growers from several vineyards such as Borella, Castelle, Lurga and Osso. This group of families have a total of about 15 hectares of vines rooted in the zone's pure volcanic soil. Producing over 2000 cases of wine annually, they display the simple elegance and purity of Gattinara.

The 2019 Cantina Sociale de Gattinara Vino Rosso ($19.99) is 100% Nebbiolo grape and is hand harvested and destemmed prior to pressing. Native fermentation takes place in large Slavonian casks for at least two years and then an additional year in cement tanks before being bottled. The result is a red wine that shows off a nose of tobacco and cedar before greeting your palate with flavors of red and black berries. The firm and fine tannins lead you into a very long and very gentle finish.

You can find the 2019 Cantina Sociale de Gattinara Vino Rosso ($19.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

Also, if you missed out on reading about the 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Bourgogne Rouge ($31.99) in last week's email you can hear about it in this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute, also on our Home Page.

Burgundy for Fall from Fontaine-Gagnard

2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Bourgogne Rouge 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Rouge

Autumn and Burgundy seem to go hand in hand as fall is the time that wines are released from this historic French region. While the family history of working the vineyards of Burgundy goes back several centuries, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard was founded in 1985 by the marriage of Richard Fontaine to the oldest daughter of the Gagnard family, Laurence.

Jumping to present day, the domaine is now managed under the watchful eye of Céline Fontaine. The heart and soul of the domain are their Chassagne Montrachets of which they own a fine clutch of premier cru vines. The style of their wines tend to run deep and intense with ample complexity and always with fine expressions of terroir.

Today we highlight four of their wines, starting off with the 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Bourgogne Rouge ($31.99). Greeting you with a dash of spice on the nose, simple Bourgogne travels far above its modest name. Racy and intense, this red wine enjoys a classic Burgundian style and is a perfect pairing for any Beef Bourgogne recipe.

Going up a tier, we have the 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Rouge ($59.99). This wine offers up a round and velvety texture along with impressive structure and medium weight. Aromas of plum, earth and pepper nuance greet the nose as the subtle but perceptible wood lingers in the background. If you are looking for a Burgundy with a youthful and austere finish with a touch of rusticity, look no further.

2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Blanc 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Les Vergers 1er

Moving on to their white wines, we have the 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Blanc ($73.99). A ripe nose with fresh aromas of herb and citrus is your first introduction to this white Burgundy. The fine richness is succulent and seductive and the medium weight is not only satisfying but beckons to be played off the fat of a roast chicken or duck breast.

For those of you who prefer Premier Cru, we have a very limited amount of the 2019 Domaine Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Les Vergers 1er ($97.99). This white Burgundy is one of the stars of the Fontaine-Gagnard portfolio. Cool hints of citrus greet you in the glass and lead you into rich, delicious and vibrant fruit flavors. Tightly wound at the start, this wine opens up beautifully and carries you into a youthful, austere finish. From the first sip one can tell that the Vergers Vineyards is the beneficiary of the air currents flowing across the valley.

You can find all the wines from Domaine Fontaine Gagnard on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

Vietti Winery — Next Stop Italy

2019 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne

What better way to warm up an October evening then to pull the cork on some terrific Italian wines. Italy brings to us some of the most food-friendly wines of Europe and today our travels take us to Northern Italy.

The history of Vietti Winery traces back to the 19th Century, but it was not until the 20th century that Patriarch Mario Vietti slowly transformed the family farm into a grape-growing and wine production business which is now one of the top producers in Piemonte.

Starting off, we have the 2019 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne ($16.99). This vibrant and youthful red wine displays pretty notes of ripe red cherry, as well as subtle mineral qualities. Medium-bodied and well rounded, it culminates in a long, easy finish. Barbera is an especially food-friendly wine that brilliantly complements a variety of recipes.

2018 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo 2017 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

Next we move to the 2018 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($27.99). Made from 100% Nebbiolo grape, this wine comes from different vineyards from the Langhe/Barolo area. For all intents and purposes the Vietti Perbacco is a declassified Barolo. Aged approximately 2 years in oak and blended in steel tanks prior to bottling, this wine offers up a mid-weight style with generous fruit and spices. A perfect choice for hearty stews, roasted red meats and aged cheeses.

Last but most assuredly not least, we present the 2017 Vietti Barolo Castiglione ($55.99). Barolo is the crown jewel of Piedmont, and the Vietti Castiglione demonstrates why this is the case. In the glass it is a beautiful pale ruby color, complemented by rising aromas of rich cherry and soft hints of floral spice. The palate is rich and masculine, with full flavors balancing the supremely elegant structure. This is a food-lover's wine that greatly complements a wine-lover's meal.

2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria

Just search "Vietti" on our Home Page and you will find these fabulous wines. If you'd like to hear about another terrific Italian wine, be sure to tune into this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute also located on our Home Page to hear about the 2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria ($19.99) from Sicily.

2019 Caymus Cabernet — Warm up your October

2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

As the coolness of October settles in we look towards wines to warm up our evenings. As we man the grill in a light jacket or sweater there is even a better reward waiting for you in the wine rack, the 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99).

The Wagner family needs no introduction; their long, rich history of grape growing and winemaking precedes them. For 47 years the Wagner Family has been producing astounding wine from this estate and they honor their craft with every vintage. The 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) boasts a traditional elegance unique even among Napa Cabernets. Filled with layers of lush, rich, dark fruit, these flavors frame a full-bodied core that is classic Napa. The Wagner family practices a technique called "hang time" where they let the fruit "hang" on the vine unusually long to develop the suppleness and mature tannins for which Caymus is known. The 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) is the wine you want for the casual get-togethers you will be enjoying this fall as you gather with friends and family. This classic California Cabernet is the perfect wine to pair with the NY Strips, Tomahawk or Ribeye steaks that beckon you from the butcher case at the market.

You can find the 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) as one of our October Cellar Specials on our Home Page.

Our Fabulous Fall Collection of Bordeaux under $20

Now that Fall is here accompanied by the cooler nights, we can once again start to turn to wines a little more full in flavor. While this leaves many options open, today we are going to turn our eyes towards France, specifically Bordeaux.

While Bordeaux often conjures up thoughts of higher end wines from the many famous regions and chateaux of France, there are plenty of modest wines that we can enjoy as we explore the region.

2016 Château Mayne Vieil 2018 Château Fongaban

Our journey takes us to the region of Saint-Emilion on the right bank of the Gironde river. Here we find the appellation of Fronsac right at the estuary of this famous river which is the home of the 2016 Château Mayne Vieil ($15.99). This merlot-based wine has minimal barrel again which allows it to show off flavors of raspberry and black currant that are fresh and plush.

Travelling due west of Fronsac, we come to Puisseguin Saint-Emilion in the northern part of the region which is home to the 2018 Château Fongaban ($17.99). This biodynamic wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc which shows off brooding dark fruit flavors as well as depth and complexity.

2016 Château Haut Plaisance 2018 Château de Parenchère

Traveling to Montagne Saint-Emilion we are greeted by the 2016 Château Haut Plaisance ($18.99). This northern appellation wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. An amazing amount of structure comes out of this modest bottle and complex mouthfeel leads you into a pleasant herbal and tobacco finish.

From the eastern end of this region near Perigord comes the 2018 Château de Parenchère ($16.99). This full-flavored Merlot based wine has lively fruit notes along with classic earthy nuances displaying intense red fruit aromas of cassis and black cherry. There is a notable balance between the ripe fruit expression and the elegant soft tannins.

You can find all these wines on the New Arrivals link as well as hear about them in this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute, both found on our Home Page.

2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria

Summer is officially over and it's time to set our eyes on fall. This means to start slowly shifting the meats we select, the sauces we create and the herb combinations we use. This also means a shift in the wines we use as pairings for these meals, and this week our choice brings us to Southern Italy.

For five centuries and seventeen generations the Planeta family has been part of Sicilian agriculture. Their work on this island off the tip of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea has contributed to the revitalization of Sicilian winemaking. Planeta Winery began on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Fast forward to mid-1980s and Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta under the guidance of Diego Planeta brought this family estate into the 20th century without losing its old-world winemaking traditions.

Today we are going to focus on their 2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria ($19.99). Vittoria is a town in the southern part of the island of Sicily in the province of Ragusa. Here between the sea and the Iblean mountains are the vineyards that grow the grapes used in this incredible red wine. The 2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria ($19.99) is a blend of 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Frappato, grapes indigenous to the island of Sicily. The vines thrive in the warm summer temperatures of this region where the soil is mostly comprised of red sand. It's a unique wine, recognizable and unforgettable for its youthful flavors and aromas of cherry, strawberry and pomegranate, due to the particular soil and climate in which the grapes are cultivated. Bursting with flavor, this versatile wine pairs well with many classic southern Italian pasta sauces, as well as with almost any red meat. Should you decide to search out a traditional Sicilian recipe such as Pasta alla Norma or perhaps Spaghetti alla Nerano from the nearby Sorrento peninsula, the pairing will immediately whisk you away to the Mediterranean's most famous island.

You can find the 2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria ($19.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay — Welcome September

2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay

While Meteorological Summer has ended and Astronomical Summer is closing in, Francos Wine Merchants has options to stave off the inevitable, and one such way is with the 2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay ($38.99).

First, let's reacquaint ourselves with the background of this famous Napa Valley Estate. Miljenjo "Mike" Grgich founded his namesake winery in 1977 after winning the 1976 Paris Tasting when he was winemaker for Chateau Montelena. Jumping to the present day, Mike, along with his daughter Violet and his nephew Ivo Jeramaz, is committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability. He farms his estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, and relies on wild yeast fermentation to handcraft food-friendly wines that are balanced and elegant. All his wines are 100% Certified Organic and 100% Estate grown.

Bringing the focus back to their 2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay ($38.99), we need to travel to the southern tip of Napa Valley. Their Chardonnay vines grow in their American Canyon and Carneros vineyards near San Pablo Bay. The cool maritime breezes and morning fog allow the grapes to slowly ripen, producing complex flavors and a natural acidity that is impossible to achieve in warmer climates. The wine displays ripe peach, mango and tropical flavors. A note of minerality means this wine can be enjoyed with fresh seafood as well as chicken and grilled pork. So while the days are still warm, and the nights have a pleasant crispness in the air, our suggestion is to have a bottle of the 2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay ($38.99) on hand for those mid-September evenings on the patio.

You can find this wine on our Home Page as one of our Cellar Specials for September.

2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Also, for those of you who enjoy a full-bodied, firm Cabernet, look no further than the 2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.99).

Garofoli Farino Rosso Piceno — A September Trip to Italy

September is upon us and the change of season is in the air. While there are still warm days ahead, the evenings are cooling off signaling us to change our wine. While it is a bit early to dive into the full-bodies and hearty reds, there are plenty of wines that will help us slowly transition to the Fall season.

2020 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno

So today let's travel to the Marche in eastern Italy, located between the Apenne Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Here in the southern-most part we find the Garofoli Family who toil away in this picturesque part of Italy. Garofoli is run by the fourth and fifth generations — brothers Carlo and Gianfranco Garofoli and their three children Gianluca, Caterina, and Beatrice. Carlo Garofoli, as head winemaker, carefully crafts the wines of their four vineyard sites and one of these wines is the 2020 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno ($11.99).

This wine is a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese with an emphasis on Montepulciano. Gianfranco & Carlo Garofoli named this wine after a beautiful mountain pass in Monti Sibillini National Park. This blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese is aged in stainless steel tanks producing a bright, lively wine meant to be consumed in its youth. This wine shows a poignant fruit bouquet of good intensity. Notes of ripe plum along with delicate tannins produce a gentle structure in this wine that is remarkably easy to drink. This wine is a perfect pairing for Spaghetti coi Moscioli, a traditional dish from the region, or can also be enjoyed with any red pasta sauce made with fresh, seasonal tomatoes and herbs. But if a simple Pizza Margarita is on the menu, this wine will do just fine to pair.

You can find the 2020 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno ($11.99) on the New Arrivals link located on our Home Page.

2019 Domaine Jobard Bourgogne Cote d'Or — Welcome Burgundy

The reviews for the 2019 Burgundy Vintage are in and the vintage is going to be a winner. While we wait for the bulk of this vintage to arrive, a few have started to float in and they are a true harbinger of what is to come.

2019 Remi Jobard Bourgogne Cote d'Or "Vieilles Vignes"

One such burgundy is from Domaine Rémi Jobard and a glimpse of this vintage is evident in his 2019 Remi Jobard Bourgogne Cote d'Or "Vieilles Vignes" ($39.99).

Rémi Jobard is the son of Charles Jobard and nephew to Francois Jobard and he grew up learning from these legendary brothers. Eventually, Rémi took control of the vineyard in 1996 and found himself presiding over their property in both Meursault and Puligny. Since 1994 the domaine has not used any herbicides or pesticides and when Rémi took over he rose to the next level converting to organics and eventually getting certification in 2011. All of their wines showcase breathtaking clarity of terroir which is a direct result of their natural and sustainable farming methods.

While they have several vineyard sites, today we are going to focus on the 2019 Remi Jobard Bourgogne Cote d'Or "Vieilles Vignes" ($39.99). Farmed from 6 parcels within Meursault, this white wine is a Vieilles Vignes and is crafted from 40 year old Chardonnay vines. The use of only indigenous yeast and their impeccable and meticulous farming techniques combined with a simple "hands-off" approach in the cellar make this a superb bottle of wine. Upon opening, you are greeted with a fruity and floral aroma. In the mouth the firm texture offers a bright palate of citrus and peach leading you directly into a silky and lengthy finish. The 2019 Remi Jobard Bourgogne Cote d'Or "Vieilles Vignes" ($39.99) will be the perfect accompaniment to any of your seafood menus and the perfect wine for those of you who are taking a late season trip to the shore.

You can find the 2019 Remi Jobard Bourgogne Cote d'Or "Vieilles Vignes" ($39.99) on our New Arrivals link as well as hear about in in this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute, both located on our Home Page.

2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien — Cool down your August

August is here, the heat is on, as is the search for wines for the hot weather. While there are plenty of choices for you white wine drinkers, it can be a bit more of a challenge for you red wine drinkers. That being said, while it's a challenge, it's not impossible.

2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

Jean-Paul Brun is a French winemaker who has earned his notoriety from his ardent use of natural and sustainable farming methods. Starting with just four hectares of vines, Jean Paul Brun has truly created a self-made empire. All told, he now produces well over 20 different wines from over 60 hectares and he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Today we are going to examine his 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($17.99). Made from 100% Gamay grape, this wine is a "Vielles Vignes" which translates as "old vines" as these vines range from 40 to 60 years old and produce flavors that are unique to vines of this age. These factors combined with the soil makeup of clay, limestone and granite and you have a wine that shows off aroma of black cherry that is incredibly enticing. The modest 13% alcohol content helps elevate the flavors of red fruit and hints of earth, exotic spice and sexy overtones. But one of the best features of the Gamay grape is that on a hot, summer day you can put a slight chill on this wine (about 20-30 minutes in the refrigerator) without muting the true flavor of this grape. The 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($17.99) is also very versatile, so regardless of whether it's some herb marinated chicken, a simple burger on the grill, or a well-marbled steak from the butcher, this fantastic effort from Jean-Paul Brun will not disappoint.

If you missed it, you can hear about the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($17.99) on our recent Francos Wine Minute or you can find this wine as one of our Cellar Specials on our Home Page.

2019 Bodegas Naia Verdejo — Your Spain Escape

August is here and whether you head to the beach, the mountains or the backyard, you want a relaxed wine to accompany you. We here at Francos Wine Merchants do our best to provide you with interesting summer choices and today's choice brings us to Spain.

2019 Bodegas Naia Verdejo

Traveling thru northwest Spain you will happen upon Rueda in the province of Valladolid which is home to the small village of La Seca as well as Bodegas Naia. The soil of this area is composed of calcareous clay upon layers of sandy-clay mixed with cobbles. It is here where we find the 2019 Bodegas Naia Verdejo ($15.99). Among these vineyards where the average age of the vines are 30-40 years old, Bodegas Naia has perfected their commitment to the Verdejo grape. The Mediterranean continental climate with its dry, cold winters and hot summers enjoys a contrast of temperatures between day and night during the growing season. All these factors produce a wine with a stunning straw-yellow color enhanced by bright, enticing nose. The aroma of stone fruit such as peach and apricot is highlighted by a citrus nuance. The round, inviting flavor offers up Meyer lemon, grapefruit and orange blossom. Our recommendation is to find your favorite Lime Chicken recipe or Herbed-Rubbed Pork Loin for the grill and pair it up with this wine. But if it's a laid back evening and you simply want to pair it up with fish or meat tacos from your favorite take-out restaurant, it makes for a nice alternative to margaritas.

You can find the 2019 Bodegas Naia Verdejo ($15.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

Broadbent Vinho Verde — The Summer Wine of Portugal

 Broadbent Vinho Verde

The Summer is moving along and as our casual get-togethers seem to happen more and more, you need a wine that's perfect for both the weather and your menu. One of our favorite wines for the season is Vinho Verde — the delicious white wine from Portugal tailor-made for summer weather.

The most important thing to know is that Vinho Verde is not a grape, but a region in northern Portugal. While there are several origin stories behind its name, the most common is that Vinho Verde translates as "Green Wine" as it is harvested early and meant to be drunk young. As a matter of fact, it can be so young that it is not unusual for many Vinho Verde to not have a vintage to them.

All this brings us to our wine of the week, the Broadbent Vinho Verde ($9.99). Winemaker Bartholomew Broadbent has created a blend of indigenous grapes — Loureiro, Trajadura, & Pedernã — to make this fabulous wine. The soils of this region are acid-rich and granite-based with areas of slate and clay. This, combined with the gentle slopes of the region, produces a wine that is beautifully fresh with flavors of tart green apple, white peach, and melon. Deliciously crisp with a zesty finish, this wine enjoys a slight effervescence (also a common characteristic of this wine) which makes it very enjoyable on a summer afternoon. This wine also boasts a modest 9% alcohol content which makes it all the more perfect for backyard enjoyment. As for food pairings, all over Portugal, seafood is the dominant cuisine, particularly meaty white fish. So if you visit the fish market and see monkfish, sea bass or even some fresh cod, don't pass up the chance to pair it with this wine. Even many basic shrimp salad recipes will be a perfect pairing for this every-day wine of Portugal.

You can find this wine right on our Home Page as it is one of our Cellar Special for July.

The Village of Saint-Véran

2019 Domaine Chagnoleau Saint Veran "Prelude"

It's the small producers that make Burgundy such an interesting region and the village of Saint-Veran is home to many of them. Francos Wine Merchants recently received shipment of a superb white Burgundy that is not only perfect for your summer menu but also a great value.

Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau is a small estate in the heart of the Mâconnais run by talented wine-makers Frantz Chagnouleau and his wife Caroline Gon. Caroline worked in both Napa Valley and Burgundy and Frantz has a degree in Oenology and worked for Olivier Merlin, also in Burgundy.

This duo is one of the most talented in Burgundy and have earned their reputation by farming the old fashioned way. This means among other things the use of hand-pruning, hand-picking, and indigenous yeast. Harvest is done by a plot by plot basis allowing each vine to achieve the appropriate balance of sugar and acidity before being picked.

All this brings us to our feature wine, the 2019 Domaine Chagnoleau Saint Véran "Prélude" ($29.99). The vines that make up this Burgundian white wine are at least 50 years in age and produce a wine that is well balanced and brimming with flavor. The palate treats you to nuances of peach and grapefruit on the entry with an underlying notes of apricot towards the finish. Wines from the Mâcon, particularly from the village of Saint-Véran, are among the driest in Burgundy a perfect complement to your summer menus. The sharp price of $29.99 makes the 2019 Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau Saint-Véran "Prélude" quite the bargain for a Burgundian wine of this quality.

Wines for Your 4th of July

2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2019 William Fevre Saint Bris

The 4th of July is the high point of summer and whether you are packing up the car and traveling to the beach or only going as far as your backyard, Francos Wine Merchants has some perfect wine choices for any destination.

If you are planning to celebrate your 4th of July with seafood or shellfish, then you want to look towards producer William Fevre. Their 2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($29.99) always makes for a classic pairing. Delivering a nose of mineral and green apples along with flinty flavors of wet stone makes this a perfect selection for seafood with a briny quality. If you prefer the crisp quality of Sauvignon Blanc, consider their 2019 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99). The small village of Saint-Bris is the only white Burgundy AOC made from Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh and round on the palate, this wine has an exquisite lightness which makes it the ideal wine for your grilled fish, oysters or a simple charcuterie board.

2017 Rombauer Merlot 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

If your plans for the 4th are to throw a steak on the grill the 2017 Rombauer Merlot ($33.99) enjoys a deep ruby color and aromas of cedar and blackberry and solid framework of plum and blueberry. If you are thinking about some burgers then the ideal choice is the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($17.99). This wine is made from 100% Gamay grape which has the structure you are looking for when pairing with red meat, but the mouthfeel has an easy-drinking medium weight to it. The other benefit of choosing Gamay grape for a summer day is that if the weather gets to the hot and humid side, you can put a slight chill on this red wine (20 or 30 minutes in the fridge should do it) which allows you to enjoy this wine without muting the true flavor of the Gamay grape.

Francos Wine Minute — If you have 60 seconds to spare, tune into this week's Wine Minute as we highlight a delicious White Burgundy, the 2019 Domaine Chagnoleau Saint Véran "Prélude" ($29.99). You can view the Francos Wine Minute on our Home Page.

2020 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle

2020 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

The warm days of summer beckon wines that elevate our summer menus while offering a respite from the warm evenings; enter the wines of Provence, specifically Rosé.

The market offers many choices when it comes to Rosé, but today we are starting with the classic from the Estate of Domaines Ott. The roots of this historic estate go back to 1896 when Marcel Ott traveled to Provence and purchased several estates with the determination to create great Provencal wines from noble grape varieties. Today, 120 years later, cousins Christian and Jean Francois Ott carry on the family tradition dedicating their life to their ancestor's love for the land.

Today we are going to focus on a wine from one particular property, the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99). This estate was acquired by Marcel Ott in 1912 and the soil is a mix of gypsum, red clay, dolomite and sandstone all in gravel and stone. The estate enjoys a microclimate of mild winters, early springs and warm, dry summers with plenty of sunshine. The growing conditions combined with the various grape varieties are what bring the magic to this highly rated Rosé. It is the Grenache grape which provides this wine its exquisite pale pink color; Cinsault gives the wine its delicate softness and Syrah and Mouvedre usher in the expressive fruit flavor. Whether you are packing up for some time at the shore, heading to the park for a summer concert, or simply enjoying a night in the back yard, the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99) is the wine that will add summertime magic to the most humble of evenings.

You can hear more about the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99) in the Francos Wine Minute, as well as view our entire selection of Rosés by clicking on the Refreshing Summer Rosé link, both located on our Home Page.

Father's Day Favorites for Dad

2018 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Dominus Napanook 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Father's Day is this weekend and some Dads are Wine drinkers and some Dads are Whiskey drinkers, but no matter what is his favorite drink, Francos Wine Merchants has all the best on sale for Father's Day.

Most Dads like to celebrate their day out by the barbeque. If Dad enjoys throwing a delicious Ribeye or T-bone steak on the grill, then that means Cabernet Sauvignon. You can start with something modest like the 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($49.99) with its dark ruby color and rich flavors of opulent blackberry. You can also move up the ladder to the 2016 Dominus Napanook ($79.99). This wine, which received a 93+ from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, will wow Dad with its deep garnet color and vivacious aromas of fresh blueberry and black cherry all wrapped around a core of solid tannins and bold freshness. Staying in Napa, you can also treat Dad to the classic 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) with its signature dark style and velvety tannins, it never disappoints.

2020 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

If Dad prefers a wine with a little more finesse, then you have to consider Pinot Noir. The 2020 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) will pair with Dad's steak with its intense plum nose and rich cherry aroma. Also consider the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99) boasting a deep garnet color and floral aromas of cherry and spice extending into a full and lengthy finish.

For the Dads that are Whiskey drinkers, we also have them covered. Check out our Single Malt Scotch and Small Batch American Whiskey links on our Home Page for Dad's favorites in Scotch, Bourbon and Rye.

Next week our email will focus on the 2020 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99), but you can preview this wine in this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute on our Home Page.

2019 La Val Albariño — Break into Summer

2020 La Val Albarino

The first heatwave of the season is upon us, and while we will certainly get back to more seasonable temperatures, it does serve as a reminder of wines you will want to have on hand for those hot summer days. One such wine is the Spanish Albariño, which is a white wine grape perfect for both the summer weather and your summer menus, and today we have an old favorite that has made its return.

Traveling to Northwest Spain you will find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas that is home to many vineyards and wines, but most famously, Albariño. The 2020 La Val Albariño ($14.99) is one of the prize wines from Bodegas La Val. Established in 1985, Bodegas La Val produces its wines solely from their estate grown grapes. Winemaker Jose Maria Ureta keeps a careful eye on the 150 acres of Albariño in this typically very humid and rainy climate; hence the use of the pergola system which elevates the grape clusters, allowing more sun for ripening and also allowing air to circulate underneath the vines. Albariño is a thick-skinned grape which allows it to grow and prosper in this damp, maritime climate. The result of all this is a wine that shows aromas of lemon, melon and apple along with fresh green herbs. In the mouth this wine is fresh and zesty with notes of citrus and a touch of refreshing minerality followed by a long, clean, racy finish. As the warmer days approach, this wine will pair perfectly with almost any sword or white fish as well as a simple cold pasta salad with a lemon dressing. This wine would also be a good pairing for your favorite fish taco recipe or even some sea bass right off the grill.

So, as the summer gets into full swing and our tastes turn to wines that are refreshing with a clean, racy finish, look no further than 2020 La Val Albariño ($14.99) which can be found on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

2019 Caymus Cabernet — Elevate your Memorial Day

2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Memorial Day Weekend is here and the unofficial kickoff of summer has started. Francos Wine Merchants has plenty of ways to help you celebrate the long weekend and at the top of the list is the Star of Napa Valley from the Wagner family.

The 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99) is the wine you want for the casual get-togethers we are able to enjoy this year, not to mention the perfect wine to pair with the NY Strips, Tomahawk or Ribeye steaks you'll be grilling up this weekend.

2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2019 William Fevre Saint Bris 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

For those of you doing seafood this weekend, we have two great choices from William Fevre. The 2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($29.99) is where you want to be if you are in the mood for a French Chardonnay with a crisp, mineral style and notes of green apple and wet stone. If Sauvignon Blanc grape is more your style, we recommend their 2019 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99) with its fresh, intense, bright bouquet and notes of exotic fruit. Either one of these white wines will pair perfectly with your grilled fish, seafood and oyster recipes as well as with a simple charcuterie board. If you are thinking grilled chicken of any type, you can move over to California where you will find the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99).

Whatever your needs are for the weekend, Francos will be at the ready to help you with your choices. Please check below for our Holiday hours.

Memorial Day Weekend Hours: Our hours for the holiday weekend are as follows:

Friday May 28th 10:00AM - 6:00PM
Saturday May 29th 10:00AM - 6:00PM

Wines from the Honig Family

2020 Honig Sauvignon Blanc

Acquaint yourself with Honig Vineyard & Winery, a family operation in Rutherford, California in the heart of Napa Valley. If there is one thing Francos Wine Merchants enjoys, it's highlighting and supporting another family enterprise and today we are pleased to bring you this exceptional family business.

In 1964 Louis Honig purchased 68 acres in Rutherford with dreams of a family run winery. He planted the vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Louis worked establishing the vineyard while holding down his advertising job in San Francisco. Eventually he passed the baton down to his grandson Michael Honig who continued his grandfather's vision. He was soon joined by other family members and elevated the operation to focus on sustainable farming and solar power. The hard work and dedication has paid off and today they have fulfilled Louis Honig's dream of running a socially responsible family business.

Today we present two of their prized wines from the Honig Portfolio. First we have the 2020 Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($19.99). This wine is 96% Sauvignon Blanc grape with the balance being Semillion and Muscat grapes. Bright and fresh, this wine greats you with aromas of lemon and white grapefruit. The body is medium weight with a crisp and lengthy finish, perfect for most herb chicken recipes, scallops or a creamy mushroom risotto.

2017 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2017 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon ($47.99) is the perfect rich, opulent wine that one looks for when your outdoor grill is beckoning you to bring home that delicious Ribeye steak. The dark purple color ushers in flavors of crushed blackberries, black currant and a hint of charcoal. The palate is full-bodied, firm and enjoys a core of solid, Napa fruit. This wine is an absolute pleasure right to the savory finish.

You can find both the 2020 Honig Sauvignon Blanc ($19.99) and the 2017 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon ($47.99) on the Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link. You can also hear about this wine in this week's edition of the Francos Wine Minute which can also be found on our Home Page.

2018 Vietti Barbera D'Asti — Nuance of Northern Italy

2019 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne

This week our Italian tour bring us up north to Piedmont, a region of Italy bordering France and Switzerland. Sitting at the foot of the Alps, Piedmont is true to the meaning of its name, foot of the mountain. Piedmont is known for their sophisticated cuisine and of course their wines.

The Vietti family has been making fine wine in Piedmont since 1919, and four generations later the winery has earned a reputation for excellence in quality and dedication to craftsmanship, and is universally recognized today as being one of the very finest Italian wine labels. The Vietti artistry is evident in their organic farming methods as well as in every bottle the estate produces.

The 2019 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne ($16.99) is one of the wine produced by winemaker Luca Currado Vietti. This vibrant and youthful red wine displays pretty notes of ripe red cherry, as well as subtle mineral qualities. Medium-bodied and well rounded, it culminates in a long, easy finish. Barbera is an especially food-friendly wine that brilliantly complements a variety of recipes. You can keep it simple and serve it with a simple grilled chicken, or dive deep into the Piedmontese culinary delights and try some gnocci in a tomato/cream sauce or a traditional Panissa Vercellese which is a risotto from the Vercelli area that actually uses Barbera wine as one of its ingredients.

2018 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo 2017 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

You can find the 2019 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne ($16.99) as one of our May Cellar Specials on our Home Page and you can also find it on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link where you will also see their 2018 Vietti Perbacco Nebbiolo ($27.99) and their 2017 Vietti Barolo Castiglione ($55.99).

Masseria Li Veli Verdeca — Puglia Pleaser

2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Spring is the perfect time to visit Italy. The menus of Italy abound with spring vegetables and each region of Italy has its own wines with which to pair. One of those regions is Puglia, located in southern Italy in the area commonly referred to as "The heel the boot."

The vineyard of Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain in Puglia in Southern Italy. Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Puglia.

While Masseria Li Veli produces many organically farmed wines, one of their most ancient and prized varetials is an indigenous grape called Verdeca and from that is derived their 2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). The region is known for its reddish, clay-like soil which is full of gravel and tuff. This makes it perfect for the vine roots to access the water beds deep underground from the long, wet winters which helps them survive the dry, hot summers. It is all these factors that contribute to what makes this wine so special starting with its inviting, bright yellow color. After admiring the enticing color, the nuances of tropical fruit and citrus start to beckon you to the full-flavored mouthfeel which is complimented by well-balanced acidity. Located in the Ionian and Adriatic Sea, the region has a heavy Greek influence, and the wine pairs perfectly with the bright lemon flavor of your favorite Greek Chicken Recipe but will also shine with a classic Pasta Carbonara or Cacio e Pepe recipe.

2020 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) is one of our Cellar Specials for May, as well as on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines link on our Home Page.

2019 William Fevre Saint Bris

If you have not had a chance to try the 2019 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99) — a terrific Sauvignon Blanc from Northwest Burgundy — you can hear about it on the Francos Wine Minute which can be found on any of our social media sites as well as our Home Page.

Bourbon Winners for Derby Day

 Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon

The 147th Running of the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday and whether you are a thoroughbred horse fan year round, or just on Derby Day — it's hard not to celebrate without a celebratory glass of Kentucky Bourbon or fabulously refreshing Mint Julep in hand. If you have never looked over Francos Wine Merchants selection of bourbons, here are a few of our favorites.

What better way to celebrate the Run for the Roses than with the outstanding Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon ($37.99). This outstanding whiskey is from one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky. Many of you are familiar with the name but if you have never tasted it you will first be enticed by the spice and richness on the nose, followed by hints of sweet oak and caramel as it first hits your palate. This all leads into a finish which is soft, smooth with definite length. If you want a bourbon made in a classic style, Four Roses is for you.

 Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon

Next we have the Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon ($36.99) where you will find a very crisp nose that is bright and fresh. What you will notice with the Jefferson's is on the taste, you will find lots of creamy vanilla, and a warm, spicy flavor. With notes of oak, toffee and a hint of smoke, this will all lead into a finish that is quite easy going and very quaffable — mostly from the aging in barrels that have a very light char to them. Jefferson's is smooth and light with hints that keep it interesting.

Basil Hayden's Artfully Aged Bourbon Kentucky Owl Confiscated

The classic Basil Hayden's Artfully Aged Bourbon ($44.99) is a bourbon that people are always happy to see on the bar. Basil Hayden's small batch bourbon boasts a blend with more rye than a traditional bourbon. Bottled at a smooth 80 proof, its spicy finish and golden amber color invite enjoying it straight or mixed into your favorite bourbon cocktail.

If you feel the need to treat yourself very well, then our suggestion is the Kentucky Owl Confiscated ($149.99). The distillery was founded in 1879 by local pharmacist Charles Mortimer Deadman who turned a parcel of land gifted to him and his bride as a wedding gift into a distillery which eventually became Kentucky Owl. The Kentucky Owl Confiscated ($149.99) has notes of gardenia, banana bread and toasty sourdough bread with flavors of red apple lingering in the background and a hint of cayenne on the finish.

You can see a complete list of all our bourbon as well as the rest of our American Whiskeys on the Small Batch American Whiskey link on our Home Page.

2018 William Fèvre Saint-Bris — Unconventional Burgundy

2019 William Fevre Saint Bris

Burgundy is home of the Chardonnay grape, but there are a handful of exceptions and one such exception is the village Saint-Bris. The small village of Saint-Bris produces the only white burgundy AOC made from Sauvignon Blanc and today we highlight one from William Fèvre.

The year was 1959 when William Fèvre declared his first crop and marked the birth of this domain. William was a descendent from a family who had lived in the region for over 250 years. Starting off with a modest 7 hectares of vineyards, over the years the domain grew to 78 hectares and 90 separate parcels. To preserve their environment, the vineyards are carefully managed to limiting yields, hand harvesting, and the biggest factor being cultivating their organic farming methods over the years.

William Fèvre retired in 1998, but the domain was taken over by Joseph Henriot and under his formidable team headed by winemaker Didier Sequier, they have continued the Fèvre philosophy.

All this brings us to our feature wine, the 2019 William Fevre Saint Bris ($19.99). This wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grape and has a fresh and intense bouquet. Round on the palate, this wine has an exquisite lightness with delicate notes of black currant and boxwood. Clean and silky in the mouth, this wine will lead you into a crisp and satisfying finish. While terrific with grilled fish, seafood and oysters, this wine will also pair perfectly with a simple charcuterie board or travel all the way up the ladder to scallops in a lemon/saffron cream sauce.

2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

You can find this wine on the New Arrivals link as well as our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link, both located on our Home Page. You may also want to take note of the 2019 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($29.99) which is of course made from the traditional white grape of Burgundy, Chardonnay.

2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre "Chavignol" — Loire's Secret Village

2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre "Chavignol"

The Loire valley always holds the best surprises in the various regions and villages that dot the terrain. The most famous area is that of Sancerre known for its stunning white wines. Today we are featuring something a little more special, a Sancerre that hails from the tiny village of Chavigonal.

Located in the heart of the Sancerre region, Domaine Delaporte is a family business passed on from father to son since the 17th century. The Domaine's home is in the picturesque village of Chavignol within the region of Sancerre. Since 2010, Matthieu Delaporte has been at the helm focusing on further improvement of the Domaine to highlight the unique terroir of this land.

Today we focus on the 2019 Domaine Delaporte Sancerre "Chavignol" ($30.99). The vines that make this delicious white wine grow on slopes with a southeast exposure and enjoy a great deal of sun during the average day. The Sauvignon Blanc vines that produce this wine have an average age of 35 years and thrive in the limestone soil for which this region is known. Using no herbicides or insecticides, the grapes for this wine are hand-picked and stainless steel fermented. The result is a wine that has a beautiful pale gold color with a very expressive nose of boxwood, marigold and even a hint of kiwi. Bright and fresh on the palate, this wine has a delicate but zesty flavor. Well balanced and harmonious, the mouthfeel stays lively right through the clean and lingering finish. This wine is perfect with everything from takeout sushi to some delicious grilled fish and a definite contender as a summer white as the warmer weather starts to creep our way.

You can find this one on our Home Page as one of our Cellar Specials for April.

2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay 2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

We are also featuring the organically grown 2018 Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay ($38.99) and 2016 Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.99) on sale this month and the subject of this week's Francos Wine Minute which you can also view on our Home Page.

Flowers Vineyard — Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

April has arrived and all it takes is a few degrees of warmth to change our mood. Warmer temperatures can also cause some horticultural madness in that we start to see the early spring flowers attracting our attention as we pass the nursery and gardening centers. While the tulips and daffodils are starting to bloom, Francos Wine Merchants has some blossoms of its own with the magnificent wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to go back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

One of their prized wines is the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) which uses organic and sustainable farming practices. They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. The wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific Ocean. While the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) will pair nicely with a delicious piece of halibut or swordfish, if you roast a chicken with the spring herbs of the season, you'd have a smashing pairing.

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your seasonal menus such as Baked Ham and of course a classic Spring Lamb Roast.

You can find both of these wines on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link on our Home Page.

Easter Hours — Our Hours for Easter Weekend are as follows:

Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello di Montalcino — Organic from Tuscany

2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino

A trip to Tuscany is just a cork away, and what better means to let your mind escape to Tuscany than with a fabulous Brunello. The rolling and sun-drenched hills of this famous region await, so let's take a quick trip.

The hill town of Montalcino in the province of Siena, Tuscany is where we find the estate of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona; an estate that dates back to the 17th century. Originally under the control of Fabivs de' Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino it was purchased by the Countess Eva Bernini Cerretani in 1868 who sold it nine years later to the Ciacci family. After a marriage to the Count Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona and a century of control, in 1985 the Countess Elda Ciacci (who had no heirs) bequeathed the entire property to Giuesppe Biachini, who was a farmer on the estate. Eventually after his death the estate was left to his son and daughter, Paolo and Lucia. The entire estate extends over 220 hectares of both vines and olive groves. It is on this idyllic land where the Biachinis produce several world class wines through organic farming methods.

Today our focus is on their 2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino ($61.99). This wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grape where the vines grow in a soil mixture of sand, silt and clay high above sea level. It's these growing conditions that help create the incredible rich garnet color and deep red berry bouquet that is both intense and fruit forward with delicate spicy notes. Warm and extremely balanced on the palate, this wine is well structured with soft tannins and a long, smooth finish. The 2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino ($61.99) would pair perfectly with a simple game menu, a classic beef braciole, or any traditional pastas dishes where red meat takes center stage.

You can find this wine on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wine link or hear about it in this week's installment of the Francos Wine Minute, both located on our Home Page.
