Today the winery is owned and operated by husband and wife team of Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson. Then in 2007 Mount Eden acquired an additional 55 acres in the Saratoga foothills which was christened Domaine Eden and these wines are quickly becoming stars in their own right.

Alex will first start with the wines of Domaine Eden which include the 2013 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99), the 2013 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($34.99) and the 2013 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($34.99). As stated above, these wines are from the 55 acres purchased by Mount Eden in 2007 in the Saratoga Foothills just south of San Francisco.

Spottswoode Cabernet & Sauvignon Blanc — A Tasting you don't want to miss

2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc

What better way for Francos Wine Merchants to start off September than with a fabulous Wine Tasting from one of California's most celebrated vineyards, Spottswoode Estates?

Spottswoode Estates, founded in 1882, was purchased by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972 and today is run by daughters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak. Situated on the western edge of St. Helena at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, the Spottswoode terrior — with its clay loam, superb drainage and cool maritime breezes — is an ideal place for growing. Around forty acres total, most is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Spottswoode Estates has been organically farmed since 1985 and certified organic since 1992.

Starting off, we will first be pouring the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99). This classically styled Sauvignon Blanc has layers of flavor offering up nuances of white peach, guava and nectarine. This wine has surprising complexity and the lemon meringue creaminess in the mouth is juxtaposed with its bright freshness and vivacity. Expressive, balanced and sophisticated, this wine is perfect for some late season Fish en Papillote cooked on the grill.

2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Moving on, we come to the jewel of Spottswoode Estates, the 2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($199.99). Garnering a 99+ rating from Robert Parker, this vintage of Spottswoode Cabernet seems to be their finest effort to date. Extremely sought after and extremely finite, this wine exudes both power and elegance with every sip. With plenty of ripe red berry fruit and notes of mocha, carob and butterscotch, this wine is dense and focused. The strong backbone of this wine along with its discernable tannins are what makes this wine a hallmark of what will be another long-lived collectible wine from Spottswoode Estates. For you true lovers of classic California Cabernet Sauvignon, it does not get much better than this.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 16th, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99) and the 2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($199.99). Please don't miss this opportunity to taste these extraordinary wines. As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our wine tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Magnificent Malbec: 2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block

2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block Malbec

Even though September's weather may make the temperature dip a bit, it is not all bad news. While it may be only a few degrees difference, the drop makes for a chilly evening which also means we can start turning back to our more full-flavored red wines and Francos Wine Merchants has the perfect one for you.

If you travel down to Argentina to the well-known wine region of Mendoza you will eventually come to the majestic Andes. At the foot of the Andes at an elevation of 4,000 feet Alejandro Sejanovich and Jeff Mausbach found the right conditions to produce the 2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block Malbec ($16.99)). Meaning "black wine" in Spanish, TintoNegro is known for its dark, blackish color and after one look as you pour this wine into your glass, there is no mistaking that this is definitely a TintoNegro. Medium bodied and silky, this wine has a nice, tight core and flavors of dark cherry. The rocky lime stone soil (from which the name "Limestone Block" comes) lends itself to the finely grained tannins in this wine. The bright and lively flavor in your mouth and the unique vinification techniques showcase the concentration and complexity of this celebrated grape. All these characteristics ease off to a long finish and one instantly thinks of a simple Skirt Steak on the grill to accompany this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2014 TintoNegro Limestone Block Malbec ($16.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our wine tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Greet Labor Day with the 2016 Clos de la Roilette

2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie

It's hard to believe Labor Day is here, but instead of mourning the beginning of the end of summer why not celebrate the finish of a fantastic season? Whether you are going to head to the beach, the park, or just the back yard, Francos Wine Merchants has the wine selection for your needs.

One wine we are featuring is the 2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99). Winemaker Alain Coudert's vineyard covers nine hectares of some of the best slopes in the region of Fleurie. To produce this wine made from 100% Gamay grape, Monsieur Courdet works only in a natural fashion which means that no pesticides are used on his vines, and the grapes are all hand-picked and hand sorted. All this results in a wine that greets you with a floral, fruit-filled bouquet, and a soft velvetly texture in the mouth. Whether you are thinking of visiting the local butcher and choosing a prize steak or organic chicken, or perhaps the fish monger and looking for that perfect piece of wild salmon, this is the wine you want to consider. And one of the best charachteristics of this wine being made from the Gamay grape is that should the weather turn warm, you can pop it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes to put a slight chill on it and it will not mute the flavor of the wine at all.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 2nd from 1:00 to 5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our wine tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Holiday Hours: : Please note our hours for Labor Day Weekend:

Friday Sept. 1st: 8:00AM - 8:00PM

Sunday Sept. 3rd: Noon - 5:00PM

2015 La Val Albarino & Taste of the Town Stroll

2015 La Val Albarino

The 6th Annual "Taste of the Town Stroll" is this Thursday, August 24th starting at 6:00PM. This annual event involves twenty different participating stores and restaurants and benefits the New Canaan Food Pantry. Francos Wine Merchants will be participating by offering a Wine Tasting featuring one of Spain's most celebrated white wines, the 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99).

Please join us Thursday night, August 24th from 6:00-8:00PM along with our host, Ms. Jennifer Balogh of Murphy Distributors as she pours this wonderful wine which is perfect for the remaining summer nights.

Traveling thru Spain's Northwest region you find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas. There, a very young and well respected winemaker named Jose Maria Ureta has made himself very well-known and the wine community is definitely taking notice. The 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99) is one of the prized wines from this 150 acre vineyard and it should be noted that La Val produces this wine strictly from grapes grown on this estate. Dry on the palate, this wine offers up zesty flavors of lemon and Anjou pear. The steamy August heat often beckons for a wine that is refreshing with a clean and racy style and the Albariño grape definitely delivers. So if you are grilling some halibut, making your favorite lemon/chicken pasta or a simple enjoying a cold shrimp salad, this is the wine you should be pouring.

Taste of the Town Stroll is a "food-raiser" for the New Canaan Food Pantry, and the New Canaan Chamber will collect donations during the event. Activities and culinary delights will be available at each of the participating venues throughout downtown, along with prizes and raffles. Details for this event and how to donate to the New Canaan Food Pantry can be found on the New Canaan Chamber website.

Saturday Wine Tasting: For those of you unable to attend the Taste of the Town Stroll, we will also be pouring the 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99) again at our weekly wine tasting on Saturday August 26th from 1:00-5:00PM.. As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our wine tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Don't miss our 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting

2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon

This August uncharacteristically has brought us quite a few evenings on the cooler side. While we are hopefully weeks away from a fire in the fireplace, the cool weather has offered a few opportunities for a full flavored Cabernet Sauvignon to be served.

While Napa always has plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon to offer, let's not forget that traveling northwest a bit, the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County also offers many choices in Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery in picturesque Alexander Valley is one such producer. Since 1972 Jordan Vineyards has been serving up some of the finest wines that California has to offer. Their 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) is another home run for this winery founded by Tom and Sally Jordan.

Every vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon strives to achieve that perfect balance of fruit and tannins and the 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99), under the watchful eye of Winemaker John Jordan and Rob Davis, is no exception. Upon uncorking the bottle you are met with powerful aromas of cassis and black currants, as well as an intense fragrance of blackberries. Pour it in your glass and beautiful floral notes rise up to greet your olfactory senses and entice you even more. Your first sip reveals a mouthful of ripe cherry flavor surrounded by a solid core that is unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich and seductive flavors are carefully entwined with the fine tannins imparted by the aging in new French oak barrels. So our suggestion is to peruse the meat case at the local butcher and pick out a well aged porterhouse, a perfectly marbled Ribeye, or a full flavored T-bone steak and then fire up the grill. Once that is done the 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) will do the rest.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday August 19th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample 2013 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our Saturday Wine Tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner — secretive gem from the Italian Alps

2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner

While the warm evenings of August fall upon us, why not enjoy a white wine grown in the cool climate of the Italian Alps. The 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner ($19.99) is such a wine and perfect for summer nights.

As you travel to northern Italy and into the region of Trentino and the appellation of Alto Adige, you come to the little burg of Novacella in the Isarco River Valley. Here Abbazia di Novacella has been known for producing world class white wine for centuries. Their reputation as a winery is stellar and, in addition to winemaking, there is a small school devoted primarily to the study of viticulture.

But let is return to one of their most prized wines, the 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner ($19.99). While not a very well-known grape you will be fascinated by this wine produced on this centuries old property. What first captures your attention are the nutty/floral characteristics that are found on the nose of this wine. Once on the palate you are treated to flavors of green fruit with overtones of almond and nutmeg. It is no surprise that fruits and vegetables are also farmed on the property all of which take on earthy flavors from the gravelly marine soil. The wine is crisp and clean mostly due to being vinified in stainless steel tanks and the flavor is kept true by organic farming practices and the use of indigenous yeasts. Cold summer pasta dishes, grilled white fishes with herbs fresh from the garden or even some tilapia garnished with a fresh garden salsa with a hint of spice would all pair perfectly with this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on this Saturday August 12th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner ($19.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our Saturday Wine Tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie — the Perfect Summer Red

2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie

While most summer wine choices fall to Whites & Rosés, Francos Wine Merchants knows that sometimes you are cooking a summertime meal that just calls out for a red wine even if it is unbearably hot outside. And there are red wines that can still fit the bill and are still enjoyable on those warm summer evenings.

The 2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99) could not be a more perfect red for summer. Hailing from the appellation of Fleurie in France, this wine is made from 100% Gamay grape. Winemaker Alain Coudert works in only a natural fashion, which means the vineyards see no use of pesticides on the vines and all grapes are hand-picked and sorted. This wine is an excellent choice for the many grilled salmon or chicken recipes that you read about this time of year. But should you visit the local farmer's market to grab some fresh vegetables, and skewer up some veggies and beef kabobs, you would have a perfect pairing. The best thing about the 2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99) is that — since it is Gamay grape — you can pop it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes and put a slight chill on it, which makes it heaven to drink on a warm day.

Also from winemaker Alain Coudert is the 2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie Tardive ($24.99). This wine from the same property is also made from all Gamay grape and has many of the same characteristics/flavors, but it is from an older section of the vineyard with some of the vines being up to 90 years old. This produces a wine that is a little more structured and a bit fuller in flavor. Production on this wine is a little more limited and it always disappears fast.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday August 5th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie ($19.99). As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our Saturday Wine Tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

Francos Wine Merchants is always excited when any of the wines of Jean-Paul Brun arrive at our doorstep and this week we welcomed the arrival of the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($14.99).

Please join us Saturday July 29th from 1:00 - 5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour this fabulous wine from Jean-Paul Brun. One of the most revered wine makers in the appellation, Jean-Paul Brun makes a variety of wines and his vinification differs in that he prefers to use indigenous yeasts rather than adding industrial yeasts. He works in a natural fashion using no pesticides in the vineyards and hand-picks all his grapes. He also believes that wine drinks best at a lower degree of alcohol and therefore sees no need to systematically add sugar to obtain certain levels of alcohol. His wines are made to be pleasurable with the flavors of the true fruit shining through.

While we have carried many of his wines, today we focus on his 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($14.99). Bright yellow with flavors of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, this Chardonnay offers flavors that come directly from the clay and limestone soil from which the vines grow. The ripe pear and apple flavors are followed by bright acidity and a clean taste that are obtained from their stainless steel aging. As the hot days of August start up, this wine will be crisp and refreshing and the perfect wine to serve if you are grilling any fish such as halibut, orange roughy or a meaty piece of swordfish. But if you are more partial to chicken, this wine will work well with any well marinated chicken slow cooked on the grill. All these charachteristics and food pairings make this the perfect wine to take along with you on vacation. Its easy drinking ability and casual flair are perfect for those relaxing evenings that fill your summer holiday evenings.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday July 29th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($14.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us you can order any of the wines we feature at our Saturday Wine Tastings by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Producer Michel Reverdy's family has been making wines in the Loire for centuries and they produce two fabulous wines that are perfect for summer entertaining. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is pure, fresh and it creates perfect harmony with any seafood menu.

But if perhaps you are thinking of some grilled red or white meat, like beef or chicken kabobs, then the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosé ($24.99), which is made from 100% Pinot Noir, is the wine to consider. The inviting light pink color with aroma of soft fruit and bold flavor will perfectly mesh with a variety of menus. Both of these wines are from Kermit Lynch Imports and therefore see no pesticides, no added sulfites and use only indigenous yeast.

2015 Minet Pouilly Fumé — Lobsters Beware!

The end of June has arrived, with the 4th of July and the rest of the summer ahead of us. As the temperature rises, our taste buds crave wines that are crisp and refreshing. Francos Wine Merchants does its best to seek out these types of wines, one of which we will be pouring this weekend at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes

Please join this Saturday, July 1st from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($19.99) — a wine perfect to have chilled and ready for any summer gathering.

A Kermit Lynch Import, the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($19.99) is a gem from the eastern side of the Loire Valley. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc this wine from the appellation of Pouilly Fumé is quite distinctive from the neighboring villages of the Loire, mostly due to the clay/limestone soil and the flavor it imparts. This wine has a mouth-watering acidity, depth of flavor and fleshy texture that is not only dry and crisp, but also a perfect pairing for any lobster bake or seafood menus you may be serving. This wine with its refreshing flavor will definitely have you pouring yourself another glass.

2015 Les Heretiques

Also being poured on Saturday is the 2015 Les Hérétiques ($8.99), a fabulous effort from the Languedoc. André Iché, who passed away in 2007, was an ardent disciple of natural wines and a pioneer of great wine in the Languedoc. Fortunately for the natural wine movement, his family continues his passion for natural wine making. Made from 100% Carignan grape, this wine is perfect as a casual red for your 4th of July barbeque and an excellent example of how a pioneer elevated the quality of the wines in this region.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday July 1st from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($19.99) and the 2015 Les Hérétiques ($8.99).

The Return - 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

Now that we have reached the official start of Summer, it is time to turn to wines that work for those warm summer evenings; wines that refresh both the mind and the palate. And, as it happens, one such wine from Kermit Lynch Imports has just arrived at Francos Wine Merchants' doorstep and we will be tasting it this weekend.

2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

Please join this Saturday, June 24th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($24.99) — a wine perfect for the rising mercury in the weeks ahead.

In the small village of Verdigny, a commune of Sancerre in the eastern Loire, the Hippolyte Reverdy family has been making wine for generations. In 1971 Michel Hippolyte joined his father; soon after, in 1983, he started working with Kermit Lynch bringing his wines to the forefront including the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($24.99). In true Kermit Lynch fashion, the vineyards of Hippolyte Reverdy see no pesticides; the yeasts are of indigenous nature and no extra sulfites are added. Very pure and fresh, this wine broadens itself once on the palate and you literally taste it from the moment it hits your lips until it trails off the back of your tongue. Oysters, clams or lobster create singular harmony with this fabulous effort, so not only is this wine perfect for the casual Sunday seafood dinner, but also is a candidate to bring along with you for any beach holiday you have planned.

2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rose 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes

Also of note from Kermit Lynch Imports is the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosé ($24.99). A little more finite than the Blanc, this wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir and, as weather turns warm, you can easily serve this wine with fish, hanger steak, veal or chicken. If you are a lover of Loire wines, Kermit Lynch also brings us the 2015 Regis Minet Pouilly Fume Vieilles Vignes ($19.99), a wine also made from Sauvignon Blanc in the appellation of Pouilly Fumé yet quite distinctive from the neighboring village of Sancerre, mostly due to the clay/limestone soil. This wine has a mouth-watering acidity, depth of flavor and fleshy texture that will have you racing back for more.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday June 24th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($24.99), a fine example of what Kermit Lynch has to offer.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2016 Marcel Lapierre Morgon — Father to Son

Father's Day is this weekend and what more appropriate wine to chat about than one whose tradition of winemaking was passed down from father to son.

2016 Marcel Lapierre Morgon

Please join us this Saturday, June 17th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Marcel Lapierre Morgon ($28.99), a wine that is the perfect summertime red that you want to be pouring.

Traveling due south from Dijon you come to the region of Morgon which is home to the Gamay grape. Here in 1973 Marcel Lapierre took over his family estate and almost immediately Marcel took up in the "natural wine" movement and one of his most famous efforts is the 2016 Marcel Lapierre Morgon ($28.99). Decomposed granite comprises most of the eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style.

Truth be told that shortly after the 2010 vintage, Marcel passed away and the estate was passed down to his son. Mathieu Lapierre was already schooled in his father's winemaking practices and he immediately took up where his father Marcel left off to ensure that his father's legacy lived on. The result of all this is a wine that has a vibrant bouquet with perfumed dark cherries and red currant. On the palate, this wine made from 100% Gamay is nicely structured, yet not a hard edge can be found anywhere from its lively start to its subtle finish. What is most fascinating about the Gamay grape is that it is a tailor-made red for the summer weather. This grape can handle a slight cooling if the weather is slightly warm, and you can flat out chill it should it be one of those hazy, hot, humid days which is exactly how it would be served to you in the summer months in France. A cousin of the Pinot Noir, Gamay grape is firm enough for any red meat you may be throwing on the grill this summer.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us on Saturday June 17th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2016 Marcel Lapierre Morgon ($28.99); it is definitely worth a look and you will not be disappointed.

June Tastings Continue with 2013 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet

With Father's Day creeping up on us, it may be time to start thinking about a gift for Dad. Right on the heels of our Caymus Cabernet Tasting last week, we now have another terrific Napa Cabernet to taste this weekend as well as a fantastic Chablis.

2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Please join this Saturday, June 10th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99) and the 2016 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99).

Starting off in California, we have the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99). Famous for their world renowned wines, Dunn Vineyards is a winery that never disappoints. The cepage contains 85% Cabernet from their Howell Mountain vineyard and 15% Cabernet from their Napa Valley Vineyard. Dunn Napa is full of deep flavors of red berry and plum, and if you are looking for a powerhouse red that is full-bodied with a firmly structured core, then this is the wine to consider. While this wine is ready to drink right out of the gate, you can easily lay it down for 15 years or more. If you are local and have not yet visited South Avenue Butcher, and seen their selection of meat, our suggestion would be to purchase a bottle of the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and then make South Avenue Butcher your second stop and find the perfect cut of meat with which to pair.

2016 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Moving from California over to Burgundy and focusing on the region of Chablis, we come to the 2016 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99). If you are looking for flinty flavors of mineral and wet stone then this Chablis is for you. A perfect choice for any shellfish recipe, especially those with a briny quality, the 2015 William Fevre Champs Royaux Chablis is a wine that can carry you throughout the summer. Whether you are enjoying some simple raw clams or are planning a full-on lobster bake, this wine will is exactly what your taste buds will be craving. It might not be a bad idea to bring a few bottles along with you if you are planning a beach getaway; it would be a shame to come back to the cottage with some fresh shellfish and not have the perfect wine chilled and ready in the fridge.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday June 10th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99) and the 2016 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($22.99).

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

A Tasting Duo - Caymus Cabernet & Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

While it's always a good day to taste Caymus Cabernet, we are even more excited to be pouring it this Saturday as we just received shipment of the last cases available in Connecticut, and then put it on Sale for $64.99.

2014 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Please join this Saturday, June 3rd from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours the 2014 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($68.99) as well as the 2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99).

This latest offering from Napa winemaking legend Chuck Wagner is a welcome sight whether you are a wine collector or simply a lover of full-bodied California Cabernets. The 2014 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon follows in the footsteps of its predecessors with its lush, rich flavors of dark Napa fruit all centered around a full-bodied core. Wine Advocate's Robert Parker gives this wine a solid 94 point rating giving credit to its dense opaque purple color and its flavors of blackberry and cassis. For those who can't wait, Parker talks about this wine's immediate accessibility, but says for those with patience, this wine has plenty of staying power and depth, going on to say you can easily drink it now as well as over the next 15 years. Now that summer is here, this wine is a reminder that it is tailor made for a big styled, simply seasoned steak such as an aged, well-marbled Rib-Eye grilled to perfection. Also, with Father's Day just a few weeks away, there would be no better gift for Dad.

2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

Also being poured on Saturday is the 2016 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99) from New Zealand. This outstanding Sauvignon Blanc exhibits aromas of honeysuckle and lemon verbena with a complex array of flavors of grapefruit and lime. This wine is perfect for any of your shellfish or lobster recipes which you may be using as a spring board for your summer menus.

A Memorable Pinot Noir

The unofficial start of Summer begins this weekend with Memorial Day and no matter if your plans are the beach, the backyard or an old fashioned picnic, Francos Wine Merchants has the right wine for you. And if that wine is Pinot Noir, we just received shipment on a fabulous one.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

The wines of Jean Paul Brun are no strangers to us here at Francos; we have carried many of his wines and he never disappoints. The 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99) is another home run from this fabulous producer. Jean Paul Brun has perfected the art of natural wine making. All of his wines are produced using no chemical pesticides or fertilizers nor are any additives applied at the winery. The results are a wine that is vibrant and fruit-driven with earthy but subtle flavors of cherry and red berries. Complex in structure, this wine has a spine of juicy acidity that lifts the red fruit flavors through the wine from start to finish. This will enable you to easily enjoy this wine with everything from burgers to steak on the grill.

Rosé for May

As we make our way thru May, our list of Rosé wines has grown. There are the classically styled ones from Provence, the delicately styled ones from the Loire and bolder styled ones from California. Whatever style you prefer, Francos Wine Merchants has a selection from which to choose.

2016 Aix Rose 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendomois Rose

The ultimate expression of Provence Rosé can be found in every bottle of 2016 Aix Rosé ($17.99). With its seasonal fruit notes of strawberry and mango, this lively summer wine Aix has a pale, bright pink color, soft, ripe fruit with a hint of crisp acidity at the finish. A warm weather favorite, Aix can be paired with herb rubbed chicken or grilled salmon, as well as pasta salads with citrus dressings.

Moving north from Provence to the Loire, we find the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99). This Rosé is made from a grape variety called Pineau d'Aunis which can be found growing thoughout the Loire. Very dry with hints of strawberry and citrus and a beautifully tart finish, this Rosé, like many wines from the Loire, is a classic match for your summer seafood favorites.

2016 Lawer Estates Rose 2016 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

Traveling across the pond and then across the U.S. to California's Sonoma County we find the 2016 Lawer Estates Rosé ($17.99). Made from the Syrah grape, this Rosé is a tribute to the sustainable farming methods practiced by Lawer Estates. This wine is dark pink in color and bursting with vibrant young berry flavors while strawberry, raspberry and hints of cranberry make up the aromatics of this youthful Rosé. On those hot summer days to come, this wine would pair perfectly if you were going to grill a flank steak but wanted a more refreshing option to a red wine.

You can see a complete list of our Rosé wines on the "Refreshing Summer Rosé" link here or on our Home Page, including the Domaine Ott which just arrived today.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday May 20th from 1 to 5pm as we pour the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99), along with the 2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja ($9.99), a terrific red wine from Spain made from Tempranillo grape and perfect for your backyard BBQ meals.

Krug Grande Cuvée - A Mother's Day Tasting

Mother's Day is this weekend and we love to put out the Red Carpet for her. Whether you are serving Mom breakfast in bed, fixing her brunch, or simply want her to know that the day is all about her, there is no better way to do it than with champagne. The House of Krug has built its reputation on the fine quality Champagne that it produces and Francos Wine Merchants will have one of their champagnes open this weekend.

 Krug Grande Cuvee

Please join us Saturday May 13th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Joe Polizzi, Ambassador for Moet Hennessy, as he pours the Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99).

Since 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has embodied the utmost in excellence that Joseph Krug, founder of the House of Krug, sought to give his clients; a Champagne of extreme generosity and absolute elegance, the very best every year.

The Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99) captures your interest immediately with its deep golden color and fine vivacious bubbles. Almost instantly aromas of flowers, marzipan and gingerbread rise from the glass along with nuances of both ripe and citrus fruit. But it is on the tongue where this champagne captures your heart with its flavors of hazelnut, nougat, brioche and honey. It is the combination off all these characteristics that makes Krug one of the most sought after champagnes on any wine list.

Over 20 years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée with a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages and three different grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is assigned a six-digit number located on the back label that actually lets you go to their webpage and research the provenance of the very bottle you are drinking.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday, May 13th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome our host, Mr. Joe Polizzi, Ambassador for Moet Hennessy, as he pours and educates you on the Krug Grande Cuvée ($159.99).

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

2015 La Val Albariño - Break into Summer

Traveling to North West Spain you will find yourself in the region of Rias Baixas that is home to many vineyards and wines, but mostly Albariño. Francos Wine Merchants has one that we recently came across and we will be pouring it at our Saturday Wine Tasting.

2015 La Val Albarino

Please join us this Saturday May 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99). Established in 1985, Bodegas La Val produces its wines solely from their estate grown grapes. Winemaker Jose Maria Ureta keeps a careful eye on the 150 acres of Albariño in this typically very humid and rainy climate; hence the use of the pergola system which elevates the grape clusters, allowing more sun for ripening and also allowing air to circulate underneath the vines. Albariño is a thick-skinned grapes wich allows it to grow and prosper in this damp, maritime climate. The result of all this is a wine that shows aromas of lemon, melon and apple along with fresh green herbs. In the mouth this wine is fresh and zesty with notes of citrus and a touch of refreshing minerality followed by a long, clean, racy finish. As the warmer days approach, this wine will pair perfectly with almost any sword or white fish as well as a simple cold pasta salad with a lemon dressing. This wine would also be a good pairing for your favorite fish taco recipe.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Also on Saturday, we will be pouring the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99). Jean Paul has two plots of 50 year old vines that grow on this south-east facing in the Côte de Brouilly. Here the Gamay grape thrives in the granitic soil and produces a wine with dark berry fruit and lots of minerality. The exceptional, pretty aroma of fresh strawberries and raspberries is extremely floral, which leads into a very ripe palate that is very well-balanced. Jean-Paul's Côte is a medium bodied wine that is smooth, fresh and round. The low 12.5% alcohol allows the fresh flavors of this wine to show through without taking away from its live, energetic and vivid characteristics.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday, May 6th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we sample the 2015 La Val Albariño ($14.99) and the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99).

Loire Valley Wine Tasting

The Loire Valley offers us so many choices from Sancerre to Chinon to Muscadet, and Francos Wine Merchants has three Loire wines that we will be pouring this weekend at our Saturday Tasting. Please join us Saturday April 29th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome back one of our favorite hosts, Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours from his portfolio.

2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendomois Rose 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Amphores Chateaumeillant Rose

Alex will have two Rosé wines from Henri Bourgeois that he will be pouring, starting out with the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99) which is made from a rare grape variety called Pineau d'Aunis. This grape is found only in the Loire and produces a Rosé that is very dry with hints of strawberry and citrus with a beautifully tart finish. Also from Henri Bourgeois we have the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Amphores Chateaumeillant Rosé ($13.99). This Rosé is made from Gamay grape and you are immediately presented with its bouquet of wild berry and red cherry. When served with the perfect chill, the bright acidity will stimulate the tongue as it eases off into a perfectly dry finish. While enjoyable on their own, being from the Loire either of these wines will be perfect for your summer seafood recipes.

2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses"

Completing our loop around the Loire we come to the village of Chinon and the 2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses" ($20.99). The vines on this plot are all around 50 years old, growing on a very steep slope with a chalk/limestone base. The expressive flavors of dark fruit and cassis are evened out with the terrific mineral content and good acidity known throughout the Loire. This wine spends 2-3 years in oak which goes a long way in softening the tannins. Earthy with hints of orange zest, the mineral complexity will guide you directly into a superb and smooth finish.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, April 29th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons and sample the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($11.99), the 2016 Henri Bourgeois Les Amphores Chateaumeillant Rosé ($13.99) and the 2012 Olga Raffault Chinon "Les Picasses" ($20.99).

Organic Wines for an Earth Day Tasting

Earth Day is Saturday and among the selection of Natural, Biodymanic and Organic wines we carry at Francos Wine Merchants, we have selected two that we will be pouring this weekend. Join us on Saturday, April 22 (Earth Day) from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour these two wines.

2015 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

Now that the weather has started to warm up, sometimes a crisp white wine comes to mind and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) is such a wine. Marc Ollivier of Domaine de la Pépière is a winemaker who has a primary goal of making wines simply. The terrior of his Gras Moutons vineyard is mostly clay and amphibolite stones which shows through in this wine. Very bright and lively, this wine has aromas of lemon, almond and pear. The expressive palate shows off flavors of white fruit, mild herbal flavors all within a ripe core and firm acidity. Loire Valley wines go hand in hand with both fish and shellfish and this effort from Marc Ollivier is no exception. With summer around the corner, this is the wine you want to stock up on to carry you through the warmer months.

2015 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Moving east from the Loire, we end up in Burgundy where in 1731 Michel Bouchard founded Bouchard Pere & Fils. While they are known for some of the most famous wines in Burgundy, the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99) — a Pinot Noir — shows off its elegance right from the start with the bright ruby color in the glass. There is no denying that the old world nose, classic to true Burgundies, is present here. Nuances of cherry and plum rise up to the nose, and once on the palate, the wine's red fruit core meshes well with the flavor of wood spice and strong limestone minerality which is all balanced out by the wine's excellent acidity. Salmon on the grill, a well marbled Rib-eye or a simple Flat Iron Steak are what this wine whispers when opened. Once again, as the warmer months arrive, it's time to put away those heavier and weightier wines and go with wines that match the season.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, April 22nd 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99).

'14 David Phinney "Disciples" & '15 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc - Wines for your Spring Menus

Now that we have gotten a taste of Spring, we can start thinking about our spring menus and the wines with which to pair with them. Francos Wine Merchants has two such wines — both from California's Napa Valley — that we will be pouring at our Saturday Tasting this Saturday, April 15th 1:00-5:00PM.

2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc

We first start out at Spottswoode Estate where we are pleased to offer the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99). Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery is one of Napa Valley's great family-owned wineries started by Jack and Mary Novak in 1972. Their 2015 Sauvignon Blanc by winemaker Aron Weinkauf is a complex and richly textured wine with a vivacious acidity and a dazzling aroma of white peach, lemon grass and wet stone. So bring on the oysters or bay scallops because this expressive and balanced wine would make a perfect pairing with its crisp minerality and long, textured finish.

2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel

Spring Lamb is something that is on everyone's menu. Often accompanied by flavorful herbs such as rosemary and garlic, the wine you choose should be one that can pair nicely with both the piquancy of the aromatics as well as from the meat itself. The 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99) from wine guru David Phinney (of "Prisoner" fame) with its robust flavors is almost tailor made for lamb. The dark ruby color and the deep, rich, complex palate mesh perfectly with the hardy flavors that accompany most lamb dishes as well as other full-flavored meats such as Chateaubriand. This wine is comprised of 93% Zinfandel with 7% Petite Sirah added for complexity, giving you a rich wine of untamed berries and a long nuanced finish leaving you wanting more.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, April 15th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2016 Spottswoode Estate Sauvignon Blanc ($41.99) and the 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99).

Come Taste 2015 Lafon Viré-Clessé - Certified Organic and Biodynamic

The region of Burgundy has been bringing us some of the world's most famous wines and Francos Wine Merchants has been diligent about seeking out some of the best winemakers from the best regions. We have come across a terrific White Burgundy that recently arrived in our inventory, and we will be pouring it this weekend.

2015 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Vire - Clesse

Please join us this Saturday, April 8th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits as he pours the 2015 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé ($36.99).

Founded in 1999 when the Lafon family purchased a domaine in the Maconnais renaming it Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, followed by another purchase a few years later, so that by 2003 they had amassed about 14 hectares producing seven different wines in all including Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé.

The entire operation is under the supervision of Dominique Lafon with winemaker Caroline Gon at his side. Having great faith in the hidden potential of their land and wanting to showcase the true flavor of both the fruit and terrior, their wines are now certified organic and they practice biodynamic farming methods.

The 2015 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré - Clessé ($36.99) is 100% Chardonnay and along with its modest 13.5% alcohol shows off a bouquet of poached pear and apple. The wine's well-balanced acidity and minerality holds firm in the mouth and gradually tapers off to a delicate finish. A roasted capon or chicken seasoned with lemon and thyme would be a perfect pairing for this wine.

Come Taste the Simple Pleasures of Burgundy and Bordeaux

Burgundy and Bordeaux bring us some of the world's most famous wines, but both of the growing regions have wines that can bring us everyday pleasure within a reasonable price range. Francos Wine Merchants will have two such wines open this Saturday, April 1st from 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

2015 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy with generations of experience in winemaking. While Bouchard has brought us some of the most famous wines in Burgundy, it is the sign of true winemaker when even his entry-level Bourgogne is outstanding. The 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99) shows off its elegance by the bright ruby color once poured into the glass. Immediately the old world nose of this wine rises from the glass replete with nuances of cherry, plum and smoke. Bright and full of zest on the palate, the wine's red fruit core meshes well with the slight suggestions of wood spice along with a pungent limestone minerality all balanced out by good acidity. If you want to experience what red Burgundy is all about without the hefty price tag, this wine will deliver.

2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Leaving Burgundy and traveling southwest to Bordeaux, we arrive in the region of Saint-Emilion on the right bank where we find a very talented winemaker named Denis Durantou hard at work. Here the 35 year old vines grow in terroir of limestone, clay and gravel producing the fabulous 2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru ($28.99). Dark purple in color with an intense, deep nose, this wine with its 5 years of bottle age is ready to drink and enjoy. Focused on flavors of cherries and black raspberry along with a hint of spice, this wine is perfect for those cool spring nights still ahead. The strong flavors follow straight through to a soft finish with notes of black cherry and make this wine perfect for that first grilled steak of the season.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us Saturday April 1st 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99) and the 2012 Saintayme Saint Emilion Grand Cru ($28.99).

The Amazing Wines of Jean-Paul Brun

This 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon is where you will find owner and winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties where he creates these beautiful Beaujolais wines which have garnered so much attention in both the French and American press. Francos Wine Merchants has just received shipment of two of his exceptional wines and we will be pouring them Saturday, March 25th from 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Cote de Brouilly

Starting off with the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99) Jean Paul has two plots of 50 year old vines that grow on this south-east facing in the Côte de Brouilly. Here the Gamay grape thrives in the granitic soil and produces a wine with dark berry fruit and lots of minerality. The exceptional, pretty aroma of fresh strawberries and raspberries is extremely floral which leads into a very ripe palate that is extremely well-balanced. The low 12.5% alcohol allows the fresh flavors of this wine to show thru without taking away from its live, energetic and vivid characteristics.

2015 Jean-Paul Brun Fleurie

Headed due north about 13km from Côte de Brouilly we find ourselves in the village of Fleurie which is home to another fabulous wine of his, the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Fleurie ($22.99). As with all Beaujolais, this wine is 100% Gamay grape and in addition this particular wine is aged in burgundian oak barrels. This wine offers deep aromas of black cherry, pomegranate and fresh herbs and is also modest in alcohol (13%) which allows deep, full-bodied and plush flavor to show through. The modest tannins and superb length grip the palate and stays focused right through its flavorful finish.

Both the Fleurie and Côte de Brouilly of Jean-Paul Brun are perfect wines for the transitional period of spring as well as being very complimentary of many of your spring menus. Also, Jean-Paul Brun has always worked in a natural fashion, so all of his wines are hand-picked, hand-sorted with no pesticides and use of natural yeasts.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us Saturday March 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Côte de Brouilly ($21.99) and the 2015 Jean-Paul Brun Fleurie ($22.99).

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Come Taste the Newly Released 2014 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon

Since 1972, Clos Du Val — located in the heart of the Stags Leap District — has been offering up some of the best Cabernet Napa Valley has to offer. This coveted land features acres of some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in North America. Only three miles long, Stags Leap District is often referred to as a "valley within a valley," and this Saturday we will be sampling their newest release.

2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Please join us Saturday, March 18th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Scott Gayman of Plymouth Wines as he pours the newly released 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($48.99). The 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($48.99) resembles none of their Cabernets of the past. While earlier vintages were made with fruit from outside the estate, the 2014 is made exclusively from estate fruit. The 2014 vintage had a growing season that brought warm, even days which helped produce perfectly developed fruit on all their vineyards. This wine has an intense inky-purple hue with aromas of coffee and blueberry. The lush and silky texture is full in flavor, with tannins that are approachable now, but will also mellow out if you decide to place this wine in your cellar for a few years. It's hard to believe after this week that grilling season is on the way, but eventually it will be here. Maybe there are even a few of you who have already shoveled a path through the snow out to the grill and are ready to fire it up. But whenever you are ready, there is no better pairing than the Clos Du Val Cabernet and a Dry-aged steak from the local butcher.

2013 Robert Craig Affinity Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Also from the Plymouth Wines, Scott will be pouring the 2013 Robert Craig Affinity Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($68.99). The 2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of producing this wine located just south of Stag's Leap on the east side of Napa. This wine is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and the balance being made up of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Showing a terrific dark red color and density with supple red plum, tobacco and hints of spice, this wine immediately shows off its pedigree. Well balanced and layered, this wine is approachable now, or of desired, the tannins allow for this wine to cellar for several years to come.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us Saturday March 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Scott Gayman of Plymouth Wines as he pours both the 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($48.99) and the 2013 Robert Craig Affinity Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($68.99).

Disciples — a Heavenly New Release from David Phinney

David Phinney of Orin Swift fame never seems to disappoint, and his new venture called "The Crane Assembly" is centered around a unique vineyard located in the gravel rich soils of southern St. Helena where back in 1885 George Beldon Crane first established this site.

2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel

Among the limited wines produced on this phenomenal eight acre site is the 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99). Dark crimson in color, the briar fruit and wild strawberry aromas leap out upon being poured into your glass. Delivering broad weight as well as strength, this wine boasts flavors of blackberries and chocolate that only vines of this age can deliver. The viscosity is fabulous and this wine should drink well for the next 5 to 7 years.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2014 Crane Assembly Disciples Zinfandel ($46.99). It is a unique opportunity to taste this remarkable wine.

We will be tasting the following wines this Saturday as well:

2013 Dievole Chianti Classico 2013 Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

2013 Dievole Chianti Classico ($17.99) — When you have classic Italian dishes on the menu, it's always fun to turn to Tuscany and the Sangiovese grape. This Chianti Classico is intense with beautiful floral notes and flavors of ripe cherry and dark spices. Paired with soft and elegant tannins, the Dievole brings you the best of what Tuscany has to offer.

2013 Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($21.99) is a great little zinfandel that offers spicy aromas of pepper and vanilla and flavors of plum, cherry and a hint of cocoa. For those of you wandering out to the grill on these cool spring nights, this wine would pair perfectly with that first grilled burger of the season.

In Like a Lion — a Tasting Trio for Our First Saturday in March

It seems like February came in like a lion and left like a lamb, so I'm not sure what to expect for March. But Francos Wine Merchants will have some exciting tastings set up for the month and we are starting off with three wines for this Saturday, March 4th from 1:00-5:00PM.

2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Cotes du Rhone

Our newest arrival came in the other day, the 2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja ($9.99). A "great value" Rioja, the 2013 Sierra Cantabria is made from 100% Tempranillo grape. This wine is perfect for an easy drinking midweek wine, yet at $9.99 it's also a perfect wine to stock up on for any casual gathering. The bright/fresh bouquet and mild flavors of cherry and slight hints of pepper mesh well together. The mid-palate finish and soft tannins are what give this wine its versatility and ease of drinking.

Traveling from Spain to Southern France, we happen upon the 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99). This blend of classic Rhône grapes such as Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault are all grown on 40+ year old vines. Winemaker Eric Texier works his vineyards biodynamically and makes all his wines in a natural manner. The wine's aromatics of dark plum and sweet herbs combine with its dark garnet color and even darker fruit flavor. Expansive and dense in the mouth, this wine has a long, yet easy finish. These flavors make this wine a perfect pairing for a variety of beef stews or braised beef.

2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes"

Moving due north of the Rhone we enter the appellation of Morgon where we find the 2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($32.99). Guy Breton took over his family's domaine from his grandfather in 1986 and started out to make a name for himself. Following examples from traditionalists such as Jules Chauvet, Marcel Lapierre and Jean-Paul Thevenet, Guy made a return to old practices of viniculture and vinification. He did so by starting with old vines (his Morgon Vielle Vignes is from 80 year old vines), never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides as well as practicing harvesting late and rigorously sorting grapes to remove all but the healthiest grapes. The end result allows Morgon to express itself naturally, showcasing its rustic and spicy style, deep red color and lengthy finish.

Saturday Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, March 4th from 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the trio of the 2013 Sierra Cantabria Rioja ($9.99), the 2013 Eric Texier Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes du Rhône ($18.99) and the 2015 Guy Breton Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($32.99).

A Tantalizing, Tongue-Twisting Red Blend

Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch are two grapes you don't come across often, unless you are looking at the wines of Austria. But as an everyday wine to pair with simple foods, the wines of Austria often fit the bill.

2013 Heinrich Red

One such wine is the 2013 Heinrich Red ($14.99) which is a terrific blend of some native grapes of Austria and a perfect wine for your simple, midweek meals. Made from a blend of 50% Zweigelt, 40% Blaufrankisch and 10% St. Laurent, this wine is fermented in Stainless Steel and then aged in used Austrian oak casks. Heinrich Red comes from three growing regions: Leitha range, where the vines are planted in Limestone, Parndorfer where the soil is gravelly and Heideboden where the soil is a sandy loam. The blend of these grapes in combination with the various soil compositions is what helps make this wine so unique. Purple in color with a vibrant cherry nose, the bouquet also holds hints of floral and spice characters. But it is the round tannins, refreshing acidity and lower alcohol (12.5%) that makes this wine so approachable and easy to drink. Upon tasting this wine I pictured this as a perfect picnic wine given the characteristics described above, but alas while there have been spring-like temps lately we are still in February. Taking it home one night I paired it with a pasta recipe I had which contained Caramelized Cabbage and Sausage where it showed wonderfully. Also, if one decided to omit the pasta portion and served it with some simply browned sausage links on a bed of the caramelized cabbage, it would also be a culinary delight when paired.

2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc

Saturday Tasting: Please stop by this Saturday, February 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2013 Heinrich Red ($14.99). We will also be tasting the 2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc ($15.99). You may recall that we tasted this wine last weekend and it really got a terrific response so we are tasting it again this Saturday as we know a lot of you were out of town for the long weekend last week. A great little Cabernet Franc hailing from Argentina. Fabre Montmayou's ruby red color and firm, round tannins makes this a great wine for your winter menus.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Frank Family Vineyards — Come Taste Napa's Best Kept Secret

There are plenty of gems that dot the Napa Valley and the Frank Family Vineyards is definitely one of them. This month Francos Wine Merchants is featuring their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon.

2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) just arrived at our door and so we put it on sale at the phenomenal price of $44.99 and asked Mr. Branden Hylwa, Account Manager for Murphy Distributors to come in and conduct an In-Store Wine Tasting this Saturday, February 18th from 1:00-5:00PM.

The 2013 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) has a varietal composition of 80% Cabernet, 13% Merlot with the balance split evenly between Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. The 2013 growing season produced a wine of beautiful elegance with an incredible dark ruby/purple color and nuances of blueberry and black raspberry fruit in the mouth. This wine is full-bodied with primary flavors of berries and dark chocolate which become apparent as the wine opens up. Drinkable now, this wine should continue to evolve gracefully and improve over the next 10 to15 years.

Le Contesse Prosecco 2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc

Branden will also be pouring two other wines of his, the most exciting being a new Prosecco, Le Contesse Prosecco ($14.99). We could not pass up on buying this Prosecco with its brilliant straw yellow color along with its fruitful and floral nose. All that combined with its refined taste and balanced acidity just made it too enticing to not purchase, so come taste for yourself. Also, Branden will have the 2014 Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc ($15.99), a great little Cabernet Franc hailing from Argentina. Fabre Montmayou's ruby red color and firm, round tannins makes this a great wine for your winter menus.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us this Saturday, February 18th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Mr. Branden Hylwa, Account Manager for Murphy Distributors as he pours these wines from the Murphy Distributor portfolio.

The Wines of Portugal — a Comprehensive Tasting

2014 Joao Ramos Marques de Borba

From Douro to Alentejano, Portugal is home to many fabulous and value driven wines. Often, we only think of Port from this famous wine growing region, but the area has so much more to offer and this Saturday we will be tasting three fabulous wines from Portugal.

Please join us this Saturday January 21st from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome our host, Ms. Christelle Marilhet, Wine Director for The Winebow Group as she pours three fabulous wines from the Winebow Portfolio.

Starting out in the appellation of Alentejo in Portugal we have the 2014 Joao Ramos Marques de Borba ($14.99) from winemaker Joao Ramos. The limestone soil for which this region is known is key in the making of this intriguing red. A blend of mostly indigenous grapes, this wine is easy drinking and had good color and balance. The fermentation in stainless steel tanks keeps the flavor bright, clean and fresh, and the four months of oak aging imparts some depth of flavor.

2013 Joao Ramos Reserva 2013 Duorum Colheita

Staying right within the appellation of Alentejo, we have another wine from Joao Ramos: the 2013 Joao Ramos Reserva ($14.99). Also a blend of mostly indigenous grapes, this Reserva has a touch of Syrah which gives the wine its much noted added body. Unoaked, this wine is fresh and full of fruit flavor while offering a plush mouthfeel. Aromas of ripe red berries and dried herbs lead into a palate that has a touch of spice and a long finish.

Moving Northwest, we come to the Douro Valley where we find the 2013 Duorum Colheita ($17.99). The word "Duorum" means "from two" and represents the merging of two of Portugal's famous pioneer winemakers Joao Ramos and José Franco. Also born of native grapes, this wine comes from two different parcels of land at two different altitudes. The result is a wine richly aromatic with black cherries, tar, mocha and hint of violets. On the palate this wine's rich texture is balanced perfectly against the zesty acidity and finely integrated tannins. The long finish makes this wine perfect for your favorite beef stew recipe.

Saturday Tasting: So please make time to join us this Saturday January 21st from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Ms. Christelle Marilhet, Wine Director for The Winebow Group, as she pours and tells you about these incredible wines she is offering.

As always, if you can't join us, you can order any of the wines we sample on the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

Far Niente, Flowers & Dunn — A Turkey Trio Tasting

2014 Far Niente Chardonnay

Thanksgiving is a week away and if you are undecided as to what wine to serve, than Francos Wine Merchants has a fantastic tasting to help you make the perfect choice for your turkey dinner.

Please join us this Saturday, November 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome back as our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons. Alex will be pouring three outstanding wines, each a contender for your Thanksgiving dinner.

Our tasting will start off with the 2014 Far Niente Chardonnay ($54.99). Winemaker Nicole Marchesi carefully crafts this classic Napa Valley wine with care, selecting the best fruit from the cool growing region of Coombsville. The Far Niente Chardonnay opens with a light, tropical aroma of citrus and bright melon. On the tongue the silky entry leads into layers of toasted oak and other mineral flavors. This all ushers into a creamy structure and a long, mouthwatering finish. When you think your turkey with a light brown skin roasted to perfection, and then think of a Chardonnay with which to pair, it is this classic Napa Valley wine that should come to mind.

2014 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there, Alex will pour the 2014 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($46.99). Boasting a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry and spice, this Pinot Noir represents the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness are at the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with the many flavors of the various roasted vegetable side-dishes at the Thanksgiving table as well as the rich flavor of the turkey's dark meat.

2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

If a full flavored red wine is where you want to be, then the 2013 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($99.99) is tailor-made for you. This cabernet is a powerhouse of flavor - it is deep, lush and rife with plenty of red berry and plum nuances. With 85% of the fruit coming from their Howell Mountain vineyard and 15% coming from their Napa vineyard, this bold wine will satisfy every cabernet lover at the table. If you are looking for a wine to stand up to the potatoes Anna, turnip mash, candied carrots, creamed onions, and roasted sweet potatoes, then look no further than the 2013 Dunn Napa.

Billecart-Salmon Champagne Tasting

 Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve

November is upon us and with Thanksgiving just a couple weeks away we here at Francos Wine Merchants have excellent wines in stock to help you pair with your Thanksgiving meal. In addition, we also have an exciting tasting lined up with Champagne Billecart-Salmon.

This Saturday, November 12th from 1:00-5:00PM we will welcome Mr. Clement Calleja, Northeast Brand Ambassador for Champagne Billecart-Salmon to our store to pour from the Champagne Billecart-Salmon portfolio.

Starting off, Clement will be pouring Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve ($44.99). A blend of 40% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir & 30% Chardonnay, this champagne is bright in the glass with a soft, straw-yellow color along with vibrant aromas of fresh cut apples and pear. Once on the tongue, layers of tropical fruit and flavors of honey and lemon abound, all leading into a full bodied mouthfeel with hints of fresh dough on the finish. This champagne is always a great approach to any meal.

 Billecart Salmon Brut Rose

Moving along to something a little more festive, Clement will also be pouring the Billecart Salmon Brut Rosé ($74.99). Always a treat, the Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé has a beautiful pale pink color with soft, golden edges once in the glass showing off its blend of 20% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir & 40% Chardonnay. Notes of red fruit and ripe raspberry rise from the glass and entice the taste buds. Once in the mouth, the gentle flavors of lemon and strawberry prevail as the fragrant yeasty notes lead into a finish that is clean and minerally. This Champagne would be a great addition to any Thanksgiving table.

A little background on Billecart-Salmon: The Billecart family has been living in Mareuil-sur-Ay since the 16th century. In the early 1800s Nicolas Francois Billecart married Elisabeth Sallmon and the two families' long held vineyards were married as well, and in 1818 the house of Billecart-Salmon was founded. It is currently managed by the seventh generation with brothers Francois and Antoine Roland-Billecart at the helm.

Our host, Clement Calleja, is a native of the Alsace region in France where he first developed his passion for wines. He also holds a Master's degree in Management from Reims Management School with a major in Wine & Champagne Marketing. He joined Billecart-Salmon as a Brand Ambassador in 2013 and currently lives in New York City and travels throughout the United States.

So please make the time on Saturday afternoon November 12th from 1:00-5:00PM to visit with Mr. Clement Calleja, Northeast Brand Ambassador for Champagne Billecart-Salmon as he pours these exceptional Champagnes and offers some very interesting insights into these incredible wines.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order these wines by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

In-Store Tasting: 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto - New Arrival from Spain

From Northwest Spain, in the appellation of Riberia Sacra, we have a new arrival — the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) — an outstanding red wine made from the Mencia grape from winemaker Pedro Rodriguez of Adegas Guimaro.

2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto

Please join us this Saturday, September 17th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome as our host Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines & Spirits, who will be pouring and chatting about the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) as well as its "little brother," the 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Tinto ($15.99).

Pedro Rodriguez — 5th generation winemaker at Adegas Guimaro — produces several wines, but it is his 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) that is one of his stars. This wine is a single vineyard offering of the Mencia grape from 90 year old vines grown on steep 70 degree slopes of granite/slate/sand soil. This is their original family-owned vineyard on a southeast plot where these old vines thrive, producing this age-worthy wine. This wine gets a unique vinification with foot-treading, partial whole-cluster fermentation and long maceration on the skins. Add to this organic farming practices along with wild yeast fermentation, and you have a wine that stands out among its rivals. Open and aromatic, this wine is rife with red and blackberry fruit while being both earthy and spicy; yet it is also balanced and juicy. Expect some moderate acidity to complement its soft tasty texture. This is a serious wine to be paired with wild game, braised beef, stews, and roasted or grilled meats.

Also from Pedro Rodriguez at Adegas Guimaro is the 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Tinto ($15.99) made from the Mencia grape as well. While crafted from younger vines with an average age of 40 years, this wine is un-oaked and pure with flavors of lush red fruit, spices and the distinctive slate-laden minerality of the other wines at Guimaro. Any dishes with chorizo, pork or a little spice would be a perfect match for this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday, September 17th from 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Matthew Barcewicz, Connecticut Brand Manager for Skurnik Wines, and taste both the 2013 Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Tinto ($34.99) and the 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Tinto ($15.99).

Price Correction: The wine we featured last week was priced incorrectly in our email, the 2014 Domaine de Roally Viré-Clessé ($22.99) is priced at $22.99 on Sale and not the $24.99 listed in the email.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order any of the wines we pour at our Wine Tastings by clicking on the name or picture here, or by following the Tastings link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.
