East of Eden — The Wine of Domaine Eden

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

South of San Francisco in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains we find the home of Domaine Eden. Purchased in 2007 the vineyards of Domaine Eden were founded and built by the late Tom Mudd in 1983 when it was the former Cinnabar Winery, but now under the Domaine Eden label this winery focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Please join us Saturday September 21st 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99), the 2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($39.99) and the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99).

Heading to the Saratoga Foothills in Santa Cruz we find the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99). Domaine Eden's Chardonnay offers up wonderful flavors of smoke and dried pear with a hint of toasted nuts. Supple and polished on the palate, this wine is noted for its purity, freshness and rock-solid finish. Some exceptional complements include the first roast chicken of the fall paired with the many root vegetables which will soon be appearing at the local farmers markets. Or if you are a little more daring at the stove, some veal chops with sautéed mushrooms and late summer vegetables would be off the charts in terms of a perfect pairing. But no matter what your food taste the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) has much to offer.

2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

Switching gears to their red wine, we are presented with the 2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($39.99). This wine greets you with aromas of mint and sweet red cherries and shows off a beautiful ruby red color in the glass. The flavors of black currants, spices, and dried herbs are all balanced out with a rich, textured feel on the tongue and a smooth finish. This intriguing wine profile pairs wonderfully with such elegant menus as roast duck in plum sauce, seared chicken with morels and tarragon cream sauce, or even a more simple garlic infused pork roast.

But if steak is on the menu, you may want to consider the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99). Expressing the true heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this wine is comprised of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) along with a little Merlot (15%) and the balance being Petit Verdot and Malbec. Fermentation is with native yeasts and after two years of aging in both French and American Oak, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. So grill up that perfectly marbled Rib-Eye and plop on a big dollop of herbed butter and pop open this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 21st 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99), the 2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($39.99) and the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99).

Chateau Fouquet & Les Hérétiques — Country Reds of France

2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet

As September moves on the food blogs and fall issues of culinary magazines will start featuring many of the comfort food recipes we put on the back burner for most of the summer. As these casual meals come into focus we will also be in need of some casual wines as well. Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring two such wines at our Weekly Wine Tasting this weekend.

Please join us Saturday September 14th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99) and the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99).

Our first stop will be in the Loire Valley where we find the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99). Domaine Filliatreau presents a lovely example of Cabernet Franc from the heart of France's Loire Valley. Specifically this wine hails from the town of Saumur within the Anjou region of the valley; an area historically known for the Cabernet Franc grape. Rich earth, herbs, and vegetable notes dominate this wine, but not to the point of overwhelming the senses. While the earthy bouquet of the Chateau Fouquet is at the core of this wine, it retains a surprising medium body that goes down with remarkable smoothness. So while the cool nights enable you to enjoy the patio mosquito-free, why not pick up some simple Flat Iron Steaks, grill some late season vegetables, enjoy a quick trip to the Loire and introduce yourself to the Cabernet Franc grape.

2018 Les Heretiques

Traveling due south of the Loire toward the Languedoc we arrive in the region of Herault which is home to the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99). Winemaker André Iché was an ardent disciple of natural winemaking and while he passed in 2007 the Iché family has carried on his tradition. So for those of you looking for a wine made in the natural fashion you will find it in this bottle. Made from 100% Carignan grape, this wine is more versatile than you may think. This wine is medium-bodied with a strong tannic structure paired with aromas of raspberries and blueberries. So if you are thinking of enjoying a delicious grilled hamburger topped with the last of the seasonal tomatoes, this is the wine you want to be pouring.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 14th 1:00-5:00PM as we travel to the French countryside and taste the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99) and the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99).

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order our tasting wines by clicking any wine link in our email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Ramey Chardonnay & Drew Pinot Noir — California Dreamin'

2015 Ramey Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Onward into September we go and while the beach season may be ending you can still transport yourself to a mini vacation to the west coast with two terrific wines from California.

Please join us Saturday September 7th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2015 Ramey Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($36.99) and the 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99).

First join us in Sonoma where David and Carla Ramey founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. Among the many wines they produce, one of their top wines is the 2015 Ramey Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($36.99). Hailing from their Charles Ranch Vineyard site in Sonoma, the fruit for this wine is pressed in whole clusters which helps produce this solid, yet refined wine. Using only native yeast and bottled without filtration helps produce a wine that shows great depth of flavor and length of finish. The nose of warm apples and spiced pear runs seamlessly into a satiny texture in the mouth and a long, lively finish. As the nights get cooler this full-bodied Chardonnay will hit all the right notes for your early fall menus.

2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

From Sonoma we travel north to Mendocino where Jason and Molly Drew started out almost 20 years ago with one clear goal: to craft pinot noir that highlighted the traditional character of the varietal. Enter the 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99). Known for the low yields and intense concentration that the grapes produce at this site just west of the Anderson Valley, Molly and Jason Drew continued with their long standing tradition of sustainable farming practices along with other traditional methods such as whole cluster and native yeast fermentation, hand punchdowns, and in most cases no fining or filtering. The grapes grown at this site are smaller in size with thick skins which help produce flavors with deep tones and a mouthwatering aftertaste. You first notice the rich color of this wine which is followed by the intense nose of black cherry, heirloom plum and the classic forest floor base you find in European pinot noir. Once in the mouth you are treated to flavors of pomegranate along with a hint of persimmon which lead into a balanced and long mineral finish. So while we are still in peak grilling weather, why not find that perfectly marbled New York Strip and open up this prized bottle from the Drew Family.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 7th 1:00-5:00PM as we travel to sunny California and taste both the 2015 Ramey Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($36.99) and the 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99).

The 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($23.99) are where the fabulous wines of William Fevre all start. This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. If you are thinking of lobster or shellfish for this Labor Day Weekend, the bright, crisp flavors of this wine would be a perfect match. This wine works because of the elegant bouquet and flinty flavors of wet stone along with the wine's beautifully clean finish which mesh perfectly with the briny quality of shellfish.

2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir

Moving over to Oregon we find the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99). This Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley is a very ripe and juicy fruit-driven wine and perfect if you are entertaining a crowd this weekend. This effort from Sokol Blosser was crafted to be an easy and very approachable wine that is ready to drink. On the nose, hints of chocolate covered cherries blend with rose petals, as well as a little spice. On the palate you will taste bright flavors of red and jammy fruits, sweet cherry, and just a hint of toasty oak. Surprisingly well structured with a sophisticated silk, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) has rich and round mouthfeel followed by soft tannins and a long and satisfying finish. While there are many options for the holiday weekend, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) would definitely be one to consider, especially if you are looking to satisfy a crowd.

2016 Valerie Forgues — Jammin' with Gamay

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Francos Wine Merchants will be visiting Touraine this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting. This little tasting trip to this Loire Valley region will introduce you to one of the most prized appellations in central France.

Please join us Saturday, August 24th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay ($19.99).

Valerie Forgues originally purchased the estate with her then husband, but in 2008 she was on her own. Driven by a desire to make a success of her venture, as well as to remain in the only home her children had known, she forged on. With the help of her brother and a close neighbor she decided to make some changes, the biggest of which was moving to working organically. But with the help of her brother she mastered how to properly work the soils all the while managing her vines and her yields. The result is an organically produced wine that is delicious and well balanced.

Organically grown and hand-harvested, the 2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) first greets you with flavors of vibrant raspberry, strawberry and wildflowers. These flavors are all present on the palate along with a nice undertone of limestone acidity that comes directly from the soil on her estate. What is great about the gamay grape is that should the temperature start to rise, you can put a slight chill on this wine which makes it quite refreshing.

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

For those of you looking for white wine that is different, we are also going to be pouring the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) from Austria. This wine is a great alternative to the more common white wines people typically turn towards. It pairs especially well with recipes such as a Peanut-Crusted Tilapia or Grilled Asian Red Snapper. It also pairs especially well with foods that have a little spice or heat to them. So as you pick out some of the seasonal hot peppers at the farmers market this weekend, keep this wine in mind.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday August 24th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) and the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99).

An Afternoon in Italy

2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Francos Wine Merchants will be celebrating Italy this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting. This little tasting trip will bring you from the Alto Adige up north, right down to the heel of the boot in Apulia.

Please join us Saturday, August 17th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour two distinct wines from our Italian portfolio.

First we will start you off in Apulia, a truly breathtaking coastal region, where we find 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). Verdeca is an ancient Apulian grape variety that is indigenous to Apulia. This reels you in with its terrific bright yellow color and subtle green shade. Intense and fruity on the nose, this wine with its scent of tropical fruit, citrus, pear and fresh spices is the perfect wine if you are looking for a white wine with a little weight to it. On the palate you will find it to be a full, well balanced wine with a good acidity that makes it incredibly food friendly. The fruity, mineral and mildly spicy finish will be perfect if you are going to grill some meaty white fish like swordfish or halibut along with some freshly grilled tomatoes and other seasonal summer vegetables.

2017 St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir

From Apulia we travel all the way up north to the Alto Adige where we are greeted by winemaker Hans Terzer and his prized wine, the 2017 St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir ($16.99). High up in the hills of the Alto Adige in the region of Tyrol, there is a sweet spot that gets a beautiful southwestern exposure, and it is there where the pinot noir for this wine grows. With aromas reminiscent of wild blackberries and raspberries, this wine with its garnet-red color provides an elegant and fruit forward wine. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in wood, this wine will be perfect with the red meats that are going on the grill this weekend, such as a perfectly cooked flank steak, skirt steak, and even a simple freshly ground burger with a juicy summertime tomato.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday August 17th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir ($16.99).

It's an Endless Summer with Wölffer Estate

2018 Wölffer Estate Rose

While we can now count the number of Summer Weekends that are left on one hand, you can still make it last with the wines from Wölffer Estate. While this famed Long Island vineyard produces several wines, they are most known for their Rosé wines both of which we will have open at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

The estate spans some 470 acres including the acclaimed 55 acre sustainably farmed estate vineyard located in Sagaponack, NY. The rest of their properties include another 52 acres on the North Fork of Long Island, 200 acres in Mendoza, Argentina, and 2.5 acres in Mallorca Spain. They also manage 160 acres in collaboration with North Fork growers. Their Rosés come from their Long Island vineyards, each wine with its own personality.

We will start off with the 2018 Wölffer Estate Rosé ($17.99) whose characteristics are the bright pink color and an elegance that is truly delightful. On the nose, aromas of fresh pear and apples are strong and enticing leading to a palate that has a clean, yet vibrant minerality from beginning to end. Made from 52% Merlot, 20% Chardonnay, 13% Cabernet Franc, 2% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Riesling, and 1% Pinot Noir, this wine tastes of ripe fruit, crisp acidity, and a nice, dry finish.

2018 Wölffer Estate Rose Summer in a Bottle

Next up from this winery is the 2018 Wölffer Estate Rosé Summer in a Bottle ($23.99). This wine is noted by the slight increase in lush and elegance throughout the drinking process. It is made from a blend of 48% Merlot, 41% Chardonnay, 6% Gewurztraminer, 3% Riesling, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner — The Influence of Austria

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

Summer is full of great recipes that make use of the hot peppers that pop up at the local farmers market or even your own garden. Often, many of them are grilled fish recipes with an Asian bent to them. These recipes require a wine that tempers the slight bit of heat yet brings out the flavors of your food — enter the Grüner Veltliner grape.

The country of Austria conjures up visions of Vienna and Salzburg and of course the hills made famous in song. But these hills are also home to some incredible vineyards and the wine most associated with Austria is made from the grape called Grüner Veltliner and we will be pouring one at our Weekly Wine Tasting Saturday, August 3rd 1:00-5:00PM.

If you happen to be familiar with this beautiful European country, you may know the most famous region is the Wachau which produces distinct wines that are crisp and dry. The Wachau is home to the renowned 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99). This wine has a great flavor full of fresh fruit, and has pleasant hints of mineralization as well. Distinct tastes of green apple, as well as white pepper, and nuances of mango are all in balance to create a crisp finish, with a light spice to round out the palate. For those of you looking for white wine that is different, the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) is a great alternative. This wine pairs especially well with recipes that may have a little spice or heat to them. For those of you who are beckoned to the grill on these summer nights, this wine would be a great choice for recipes such as Grilled Asian Red Snapper or maybe a Ginger Lime Sauce that could be served over Swordfish or Sea Bass.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday August 3rd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) and see for yourself how fabulous this wine would be at your summer dinner table.

Small is Big with Jean-Paul Brun

2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

With the local Farmers Markets in full swing it's a reminder of how good products that are from a small producer can surpass anything that is grown for the masses. There is no comparison to a tomato that is grown on a small farm and hand-picked at the peak of ripeness to one that is not. This brings us to producer Jean-Paul Brun.

The wines of Jean-Paul Brun hail from a 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon where you will find winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties in a very "hands on" process where he creates some of the most fabulous wines in the region. Jean-Paul Brun is a master craftsman who focuses on making classically styled wines in a natural fashion with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and also no additives applied in the winery. All this effort brings forth a wine that is both the best of terroir as well as the varietal.

We will be pouring his 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, July 27th 1:00 - 5:00PM.

While Jean-Paul Brun makes several wines, today we are going to focus on the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99). Back in 1989 Jean-Paul Brun was one of the few producers in the region to plant Pinot Noir and thus allowed him to release the wine under the Bourgogne appellation. The bright ruby-red clarity of the wine is evident the moment you pour the wine into the glass. The fresh and energetic nose entices you into that first sip which brings forth flavors of fresh raspberry and cherry flavors and a zesty mineral overtone. A spine of juicy acidity runs straight through the wine and lifts the fruit flavors through a long, seamless finish. Whether you are enjoying this bottle yourself or are having a small group over for some casual backyard entertaining, this is the wine you want if you are throwing a steak on the grill.

2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignes" 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

For those of you interested in the other Jean-Paul Brun wines that we have in stock, they would be the 2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignes" ($16.99) and the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99).

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday July 27th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99).

2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre — Watch the Lobsters run

2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre

If you listen closely as you open a bottle of the 2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99), you can hear the lobsters run the other way. The lobster is the ocean's most beloved crustacean and you need to consider the perfect wine with which to pair. So whether you are making a traditional Maine Lobster Boil, or perhaps you are going to fancy things up and prepare a Stuffed Lobster or maybe just keeping it simple with a Lobster roll, this is the wine you want to consider.

Please join us this Saturday, July 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

The 2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99), made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, has an enticing lemon yellow color and a crisp mineral driven flavor with notes of citrus and floral/flinty aromas on the nose. In true Kermit Lynch fashion the vineyards of Hippolyte Reverdy see no pesticides, the yeasts are of indigenous nature, and no extra sulfites are added. Very pure and fresh, this wine broadens itself once on the palate and you literally taste it from the moment it hits your lips until it trails off the back of your tongue. Oysters, clams or lobster create singular harmony with this fabulous effort.

Hippolyte Reverdy's family has been making wine in the quaint village of Verdigny (a commune of Sancerre in the eastern Loire) for generations. Shortly after World War II, Hippolyte and his three sons began bottling small quantities under their own label to satisfy the increasing demands from Paris. Hippolyte was joined by his son Michel in 1971, and in 1983 they joined forces with Importer Kermit Lynch. Shortly thereafter Hippolyte Reverdy passed on and Michel had to deal with the untimely death of his two brothers and was left with his mother to bear the responsibility to run the vineyard. Today Michel farms fourteen hectares of vineyards on his own and Kermit Lynch says that since Michel has taken the reins Reverdy has become the benchmark domaine of our day.

So please stop by this Saturday July 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre ($27.99).

La Val Albariño & New Canaan Sidewalk Sale Days

2018 La Val Albarino

You know it's July in New Canaan when the Annual Sidewalk Sale takes place. While the street will be full of hot deals, Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring a thirst quenching wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us Saturday, July 13th from 1:00 - 5:00PM as we welcome as our host Ms. Rachel Konstantin representing Murphy Distributors as she pours the 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99).

If any of your summer menus call for a terrific dry white wine, then you have to consider the 2018 La Val Albariño ($14.99). This wine is both Estate Grown and Estate Bottled and delivers aromatic citrus fruit with hints of chalky minerality. Dry on the palate, it offers up zesty lemon and Anjou pear flavors. La Val produces its wines solely from the grapes grown on their 150 acre estate. Jose Maria Ureta is a young and extremely well respected winemaker and one definitely making his mark in Rias Baixas. So, as the summer gets into full swing and our tastes turn to wines that are refreshing with a clean, racy finish, look no further than La Val Albariño.

2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir

Rachel also said she wanted to pour another wine from the Murphy Distributors portfolio, so she will transport you back to the United States to Oregon's Willamette Valley where she will pour her next wine, the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99). What first strikes you with the Iris Vineyards Pinot Noir is the bright ruby color as it hits the light as it leaves the bottle. The aromas of raspberry, plum and blackberry are released as you pour it into your glass. In the mouth you are treated to a deep, rich flavor and a long palate which is what makes this wine so versatile with a variety of foods and perfect for summertime fare. Named for the wild Douglas Iris that bloom here in the spring, Iris Vineyards is a south facing, bowl-shaped valley surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Oregon Coast Mountain Range. Owners Richard Boyles and Pamela Frye began planting their vineyard in 1996 and their first vintage was in 2001. Currently their wines are crafted under the watchful eye of winemaker Aaron Lieberman who joined them in 2008.

New Canaan Sidewalk Sale: Also happening on Saturday is the 54th Annual New Canaan Sidewalk Sale. For those of you not familiar with this yearly event, it begins on Friday July 12th 10:00 - 4:00PM when stores put out their merchandise on the sidewalks of town at sale prices, but the big focus is on Saturday July 13th, when Elm & Main Streets in downtown New Canaan will be blocked off from vehicular traffic and turned into a one day pedestrian mall. In addition to the stores' terrific sale prices, restaurants set up on the street serving adapted menus and there will be music and activities going on all day. This event takes place rain or shine and is a fun day for all.

This wine with its ripe and generous bouquet shows a terrific mid-weight feel in the mouth while imparting flavors of delicious black fruit. Parker calls this wine "undervalued" and gives it a 91 rating.

It is here where we find Pierre and Monique Luneau-Papin working away in their prized vineyards producing incredible wines such as the 2017 Luneau-Papin Clos Des Allées Muscadet Sèvre et Maine ($17.99). If you travel to the western end of the Loire Valley you find the region of Muscadet which is broken up into three appellations. The appellation of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is named after the two rivers that cross in the region: the Petite Maine and the Sèvre Nantaise, and the finest Muscadet come from this particular spot. This naturally produced wine from Pierre and Monique Luneau-Papin uses only organic fertilizers, grapes are picked by hand and the wine stays on its lees for 9 months during vinification. Made from Melon de Bourgogne grape, this wine is crisply styled and is a glorious accompaniment for all seafood/shellfish menus. Very limited in production, this wine will sell out quickly as it a model example of how Muscadet should be produced and of course for its classic seafood pairing and its wide appeal.

The Return of Lapierre Morgon

2018 Marcel Lapierre Morgon

There are a handful of wines that always cause a stir when they become available. We are not speaking of wines that are famous due to their world renowned presence, but rather wines that are famous due to the fact that they are simply well-produced, enjoyable and moderately priced. They are not limited due to popularity so much as limited because they are well-made, small production wines. One such wine is the 2018 Marcel Lapierre Morgon ($30.99) and it has arrived at our doorstep.

Please join us Saturday June 1st 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Marcel Lapierre Morgon ($30.99) and you can experience what this wonderful wine has to offer and why it causes so much excitement.

Traveling due south from Dijon you come to the region of Morgon which is home to the Gamay grape. Here in 1973 Marcel Lapierre took over his family estate and almost immediately Marcel took up in the "natural wine" movement with all his wines including his famous Lapierre Morgon. Decomposed granite comprises most of the eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style.

Sadly, shortly after the 2010 vintage, Marcel passed away and the estate was passed down to his son. Mathieu Lapierre was already schooled in his father's winemaking practices and he immediately took up where his father Marcel left off to ensure that his father's legacy lived on. The result of all this is a wine that has a vibrant bouquet with perfumed dark cherries and red currant. On the palate, this wine made from 100% Gamay is nicely structured, yet not a hard edge can be found anywhere from its lively start to its subtle finish. What is most fascinating about the Gamay grape is that it is a tailor-made red for the summer weather. This grape can handle a slight cooling if the weather is slightly warm, and you can flat out chill it should it be one of those hazy, hot, humid days which is exactly how it would be served to you in the summer months in France. A cousin of the Pinot Noir, Gamay grape is firm enough for any red meat you may be throwing on the grill this summer.

Please join us this Saturday June 1st 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Marcel Lapierre Morgon ($30.99) and find out why this wine causes so much excitement upon release.

As always if you are unable to join us you can find this wine as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

The Wines of Jean-Paul Brun — A Lesson in Natural Winemaking

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

Jean-Paul Brun is the unheralded Icon of Beaujolais. His 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon is where you will find him toiling away on his property under the domain name of "Terres Dorées." If you are unfamiliar with this region, the wines of Jean-Paul Brun are a great introduction. Long ago, Jean-Paul Brun realized the importance of working in a natural fashion, shunning the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, hand-harvesting his fruit, and using only indigenous yeast.

Please join us this Saturday, May 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour two of his wines.

First we will start off with the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99). Bright yellow with flavors of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, this Chardonnay offers flavors that come directly from the clay and limestone soil from which the vines grow. The ripe pear and apple flavors are followed by bright acidity and a clean taste that are obtained from their stainless steel aging. Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing with a Roast Chicken spiced with the first sprigs of spring tarragon that is currently popping up in the garden.

2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignes"

Next we move to the 2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignes" ($16.99) which is made from 100% Gamay (a close cousin to Pinot Noir) offering a soft and elegant style. The average age of the vines used to make this outstanding wine range in age from 40 to 60 years old, hence the "Vieilles Vignes" designation. Naturally high sugar levels in the fruit due to late harvesting give this wine a deep color and a rich red-fruit aroma. This is a medium to full bodied red with a very flavorful, fresh taste and a long finish. You will recognize notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, and sweet red plum. The wine has enough structure to easily go with a full-flavored T-Bone or Rib-eye you are planning to christen the grill.

2017 The Chocolate Block

In addition to these two lovely wines from Jean-Paul Brun, we will also be tasting a South African red wine, the 2017 The Chocolate Block ($27.99). This wine from the Stellenbosch region of South Africa is made up of 64% Syrah grape, 14 % Grenache, 11% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and finally 1% Viognier. On the nose, it has a very a complex aroma of dark berries with a hint of white pepper while in the mouth flavors of dark, brooding fruit spring forward. For those of you who prefer a full-flavored red wine to go with your grilled steak, look no further.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join Saturday May 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99), the 2017 Jean Paul Brun Beaujolais L'Ancien "Vieilles Vignes" ($16.99), and the 2017 The Chocolate Block ($27.99).

The Wines of Domaine de la Pépière — A Day in the Loire

2017 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

France's Loire Valley is home to many of the wines we seek out in the summer months including Muscadet. A discussion about the Loire would not be complete without speaking of the village of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre which houses the Domaine de la Pépière where winemaker Marc Ollivier has become a central figure in the Loire Valley winemaking world.

Please stop in this Saturday May 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste two of the wines from Domaine de la Pépière that have been created by master winemaker Marc Ollivier.

First a little background: Marc Ollivier has no formal winemaking lineage; all he knew is that he wanted to work outdoors and the wine trade was one of the options open to him. He went to Mâcon for a degree in viticulture and came back with a passion for winemaking. In 1984 his neighbor who was a vigneron died unexpectedly and he had the opportunity to buy his winery, which he did. At that time it was a 7 hectare estate which has now grown into a 28 hectare estate. His farming is all organic with all his fruit hand-picked and hand-harvested. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts, which makes his wines so sought after. La Pépière originates from the word "Pépie" aptly meaning "to be thirsty".

This now brings us to our first wine, the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99). This wine is made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape from vines 20 to 70 years in age from a gentle south-facing slope which allows the fruit to ripen to its fullest. The soil features a compressed form of granite as well as amphibolite rocks scattered throughout.

2015 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Clisson

Next we move to the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99). Also made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape this is a beautifully charming and exceptionally delicate wine. The distinguishing feature on this special plot of land where the vines range from 50 to 110 years old is the soil type. This unusual soil is called granite de Clisson which is a particularly hard, compact granite with little clay and a lot of quartz. This helps produce a wine with an exceptional mineral quality that make it stand out from other Muscadets.

Both the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99) are wines that shine for your summer menus. When you pack up to head to the shore this summer and dream of dinners centered around seafood, most notably shellfish, these are the wines you want to have chilled and at hand.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday May 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

Daniel Rion 2016 Côte de Nuits-Villages Mosaic — return to Burgundy

2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Cote de Nuits Villages Mosaic

Burgundy is alive with the spring budding season, so what better time to reacquaint yourself with the wonder that is Burgundy and the fabulous wines this region provides. One such wine comes from winemaker Daniel Rion, and just this week one of his incredible Burgundies arrived in our inventory. Please join us this Saturday May 4th 1:00-5:00 PM as we pour the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99).

The story of Daniel Rion harkens back to 1955 when this family-owned estate began with only two hectares of vines left to Daniel by his grandfather. Up until 1978 Daniel dealt only with other Burgundian negociants until his sons joined him in the family business. The new venture with his sons not only added new parcels of vines, but also a new winery was built with a larger cellar and tasting room. The original two hectares of land has now grown to over eighteen hectares of vineyards in six villages.

This all brings us to the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99). The manageable size of this estate allows them to hand harvest their grapes which they collect in whole bunches. This method preserves the integrity of the grapes and increases their aromatic potential. The Pinot Noir used in the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99) has a beautiful bright red fruit on the nose backed up with hints of black tar, chocolate and licorice. On the palate the texture is chewy and rich with notes of cherry and fresh strawberries. The mild acidity and firm/ripe tannins all lead into a dry, lean finish. So whether you are going to dine inside and cook the last Magret of Duck of the season, or you are going to dine outside and grill the first steak of the season, this is the wine you want to have in your glass.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join this Saturday May 4th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Côte de Nuits Villages Mosaic ($41.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find this wine as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

Welcome Spring with 2017 William Fevre Chablis

2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Spring is moving along and we here on the East Coast have been treated to some classic spring days recently. Keeping the back door open in the evenings and enjoying the warmth as the sun sets is all a perfect time to reacquaint yourself with some wines that may have taken a back seat during the winter months. Once such wine is the 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($23.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday April 27th 1:00-5:00PM.

Chablis is a wine region with global renown, and Domaine William Fevre also shares the same notoriety among the world of Chablis. The 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($23.99) is where the fabulous wines of William Fevre all start. This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. The 2017 growing season was graced by beautiful weather in August and into September. This allowed the crop of the 2017 season to reach optimum maturity along with achieving perfect balance, great freshness and magnificent purity. So as the spring herbs such as chives and tarragon start to pop up in the garden, this wine would be a perfect match for herb-rubbed chicken either roasted or grilled. The bright flavors of this wine would mesh perfectly with the fresh clean flavors these herbs have to offer. The 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($23.99) is also one to keep in mind as we progress into the warmer months as its elegant bouquet and flinty flavors of wet stone and a beautifully clean finish will pair well with any shellfish — especially one with a briny quality. The clean and crisp finish of this wine is just what you will be looking for as we creep into June and July.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join this Saturday April 27th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($23.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find this wine as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir — Evolve into Spring

2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir

Spring has been teasing us with a nice day here and there, but with the bounty of spring vegetables arriving at the store, the Spring Lamb in the meat case at the butcher and the perfect wine, you can give spring a little push in the right direction. One such wine is the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday April 20th 1:00-5:00PM.

The Sokol Blosser Winery was founded in 1970 when wide-eyed young couple, Bill Blosser and Susan Sokol Blosser, found a beautiful old orchard around 30 miles southwest of Portland Oregon in the heart of the Willamette Valley and started the dream of owning a winery. Over the next several years this young couple not only made this region their home and started a family, but also delved head first into their passion for Pinot Noir with the goal to produce world class wines. By 1977 the Sokol Blosser Winery and vineyard was finally completed and they produced their first vintage.

The 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) is a very ripe and juicy fruit-driven wine made of 100% Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Juicy and fruit-driven with a sophisticated silk, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir has rich and round mouthfeel followed by soft tannins and a long and satisfying finish. When perusing through your food magazines or recipe blogs and seeing the many spring lamb recipes, it is the pinot noir grape that should take center stage. While there are many options, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) would definitely be one to consider, especially if you are looking to satisfy a crowd.

2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes"

Also this weekend we will be pouring the 2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($19.99). Jean-Paul Thévenet is the third generation to produce wine at his family estate in Morgon and his Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" is made from two parcels of vines, one 45 years old and the other 110 years old. Biodynamic and manually harvested, this wine which is made from 100% Gamay grape is harvested as late as possible in the season to achieve maximum ripeness. The result is a wine with a beautiful nose of cherry, pomegranates and slight floral nuance.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday April 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($19.99) and the 2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($19.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find these wines as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

April Showers and a glass of Flowers

April has arrived and all it takes is a few degrees of warmth to change our mood. Warmer temperatures can also cause some horticultural madness in that we start to see the early spring flowers attracting our attention as we pass the nursery and gardening centers. While the tulips and daffodils are starting to bloom, Francos Wine Merchants has some blossoms of its own with the magnificent wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Please join us Saturday April 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) and the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to go back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

One of their prized wines is the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) which uses organic and sustainable farming practices. They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. The wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific ocean. While the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($46.99) will pair nicely with a nice piece of halibut or swordfish, if you roast a chicken with the spring herbs of the season, you'd have a smashing pairing.

2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2016 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($48.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your spring menus such as baked ham, lamb and or course beef.

2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay & 2016 Crossbarn Pinot Noir — California Dreamin'

2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay

While we often travel the globe with our wine selections, we can sometimes forget that there are terrific finds close to home. Some of the most flavorful and lively wines in the world come from right here in the United States, and many from the exceptional vineyards in California. This week at Francos Wine Merchants, we will be tasting two superb wines from this fabulous state and we hope that you will join us.

Please stop by this Saturday, March 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we take a journey to the west coast, and pour the 2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ($24.99) and the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99).

Starting off in Santa Barbara, the 2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ($24.99) is a wine which has truly developed an identity of its very own. One reason this Chardonnay is so unique is that it is a blend from four different vineyard sites: Bien Nacido, Sierra Madre, Los Alamos, and Rancho Vinedo. A fine example of the Au Bon Climat style, this wine has a subtle, yet very refined taste. On the palate, you will taste notes of lemon-lime, as well as soft vanilla. It is balanced and lively, certainly the type of wine which makes you want to pour yourself a second glass. A great pairing for poultry or shellfish, this is a wine that complements a variety of foods. But with the spring mushrooms starting to arrive at the supermarket, pair this wine with the woody flavor of a Chanterelle Mushroom Pasta, and you'll surely be amazed.

2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma

As we leave Santa Barbara County and we take a long, scenic drive towards Northern California we arrive at California's infamous Sonoma Coast. Here is where we find our next California jewel, the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99). The Crossbarn label is produced by California Winemaking legend, Paul Hobbs. Hobbs grew up on his family's farm, and from a young age learned to distinguish fruits that were grown in different locations and climates as well as the benefits of a very "hands on" approach to growing. All this eventually led to his ability to create the variety of wines he produces today. After years of working for some of the most famous vineyards in California, he decided to pursue his own wine-making ventures. The 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99) is one of those efforts and it is made of 100% Pinot Noir. This wine has a vibrant ruby red color in the glass and on the nose dark cherry and perfumed violet nuances are powerful, yet elegant. This is a balanced and refined red, which has a long and exciting finish. Now that the path from the kitchen door to the grill is free of snow, it may be time to think about a nice Skirt Steak to pair with this fabulous Pinot Noir.

Please join us Saturday, March 23rd 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2016 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ($24.99) and the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99).

2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera — An Afternoon in Sicily

2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera

Continuing on our tour of Italy this month, we bring you to the island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean just off the toe of Italy's boot. Sicily's temperature is moderated by the warm waters of the Mediterranean and mild temperatures that range from the high 40s in January to the high 80s in August. On this beautiful and wine-rich island there are multiple vineyards that have been around for many generations, each one rich with history and traditions. One of these great wine-producing families is the Tasca family, who has been producing wine at five different estates throughout Sicily for eight generations.

Please join us this Saturday, March 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we take a journey to the Tascante Estate, as we pour the 2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

The highest peak in Sicily is Mount Etna, an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily. It is on the northern side of this mountain that we find the vineyards that produce the 2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99). Surrounded by olive, chestnut and oak trees, this biodiverse ecosystem plays a big role in the personality of this wine. Enter the Nerello Mascalese grape grown in the volcanic soil in the Piano district of Catania. The grapes grown here flourish and ripen in the hot Sicilian summer before being picked in mid to late October. It is these warm days that gives this wines its fresh and ripe flavor and showcases the true personality of this native grape of Sicily. Upon pouring this wine you will first notice its cherry red color in the glass and in the mouth you are treated to a bright, fresh taste and soft tannins. It is the easy drinkability of this wine which makes it fine on its own, but also makes it very food friendly. Our suggestion would be to dig out a traditional Sicilian recipe of Pasta alla Norma or Braciole di Manzo and you will instantly transported to Italy's most famous island.

Please join us Saturday, March 16th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

As always if you are unable to join us you can find this wine as well as all the wines we pour on the Tasting link on our Home Page.

New Arrivals from Umbria & the Wachau Valley

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

While we wait for spring in this confusing month of March where one day is sunny and in the 50s and the next day is snowy and below freezing, at least there is the excitement of new wine arrivals. Francos Wine Merchants received three terrific new wines this week and we are excited to share them with you.

Please join us Saturday, March 9th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the following three wines.

If you're familiar with the beautiful European country of Austria you may know the most famous region is the Wachau which produces distinct wines that are crisp and dry. For those of you looking for white wine that is different, the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) is a great alternative to serve with various seafood dishes, or a variety of poultry menus. Although, if you are so inclined to dig out a traditional "weiner schnitzel" recipe that would be a classic match for this wine.

2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso

From Austria if we take a quick jaunt to central Italy we arrive in the region of Umbria where we find our next two wines from the Fongoli Estate.

The Fongoli Estate is in the center of the famous Umbrian wine country where the Fongoli Family has been producing wines for over 80 years. The property was first purchased by Decio Fongoli Calvani in 1927 and three generations later is currently owned by siblings Angelo and Simona Fongoli where they still practice organic farming methods on all their wines.

The first wine we will pour from this famous region is the 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99). This is a well-structured wine, with bright, ruby red color comprised of 60% Sangiovese grapes, and 40% Montepulciano grapes. The 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99) has a fruity taste that pairs delightfully with pasta dishes, especially traditional ones from the area such as Rigatoni All'Amatriciana.

2015 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso

The next wine from this famous property is the 2015 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99). A tad drier than its brother, this wine is full of flavors coming from the blend 60% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot and 10% Montepulciano. Carrying a bit more bite to it, this wine has a spicy yet fruity taste in the mouth which opens up beautifully in the glass and would flourish with some decanting. A great wine to have with cheeses, but its true culinary home would be a pairing with some traditional Umbrian dishes such as Pork with Juniper berries or Spring Rack of Lamb with Saffron.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on March 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99), the 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99) and the 2015 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99).

Chateau de Combel-la-Serre — Cahors Galore!

2017 Chateau de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

It's always nice to see the return of an old friend and so we here at Francos Wine Merchants were very happy to see the return of the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99).

Please join us Saturday, March 2nd 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) from the small region of Cahors, the origin of the Malbec grape.

To get to this region one need to travel almost 400 miles south of Paris to Southern France where we come to the area of Cahors. As we travel thru we find winemaker Julien Ilbert toiling among his vines that have been in his family for generations. His 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) is one of his prized efforts. Commonly called "Cot" in this region this grape's thin skin is what makes it so susceptible to climate and soil conditions. In the terroir of the Cahors region this grape produces a very dark colored wine (it is often referred to as the "Black Grape") yet has a tremendous flavor of blackberry fruit. This wine in particular shows off these berry flavors mostly due to the limestone soil that is widespread throughout the region. Unlike its beefier South American cousins, this Malbec is lighter in style, yet still big in flavor and would be a perfect pairing for a Flat Iron Steak or even a more full-flavored Rib-Eye. The Malbec is quite often used as a blending grape in the production of wine from Bordeaux, but this grape has truly found a lovely home in the Southwest region of France, in the Cahors appellation.

2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges"

Also on Saturday, if you are willing to take a quick detour to the northeast, you will end up in the Loire village of Chinon where we find the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99). This wine is made from 100% Cabernet Franc from vines with an average age of 30-35 years. Practicing organic farming methods with wild-yeast fermentation, this wine shows a deep red/black color and beautiful aromas of black fruit and supple strawberry and blackberry flavors and a bright acidity all balanced out by a modest 12.5% alcohol.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, March 2nd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) and the 2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry "Les Granges" ($18.99).

Masseria Li Veli Verdeca & Passamante — an Afternoon in Apulia

2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Italy always seems to offer something out of the ordinary and this week our feature wines takes us to Apulia. For those of you unfamiliar with Italian geography, this region is also known as "the heal of the boot" located in the southern part of the country.

Please join us this Saturday February 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99).

Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain. Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Apulia.

First we will treat you to the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). Verdeca is an ancient Apulian grape variety that is indigenous to Apulia. This wine has a terrific bright yellow color with subtle green shades that is intense fruity on the nose, with scent of tropical fruit, citrus, pear and fresh spices. On the palate you will find it to be a full, well balanced wine with a good acidity. The fruity, mineral and mildly spicy aftertaste would be perfect if you were whipping up a dish of Cacio e Pepe or classic Pasta Carbonara recipe.

2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante

Next we have the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99) made from the Negroamaro grape. Located beside the vineyard is a forest and in times past, lovers would walk by this vineyard on their way to the forest looking for private time with their paramour. Soon it became known as the Forest of Lovers and took on the name of Passamante from the words "Pass" (to pass) and "Amante" (Lover). But the wine itself has the essence of young lovers in that the nose of this wine is lively and intense with scents full of ripe red fruits as well as hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. This enjoyable, medium-bodied wine has a long and full grip, as well as an acidic touch, giving it a delightfully fresh finish. This wine is an excellent complement to traditional Italian pasta dishes such as Pappardelle with Roasted Tomato Sauce, as well as a delightful pairing for a piece of aged cheese.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we open the 2018 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99) and perhaps you too can enjoy a taste of an authentic Italian vineyard, rich in history, and glowing with beautiful flavor.

When Iris Eyes are Smiling — 2015 Iris Pinot Noir

Our feature wine this week is once again a Pinot Noir, but this time from Oregon. Pinot Noir is a finicky grape that grows differently in various climates, but has adapted very well to Oregon's Willamette Valley and this week's wine is from a small vineyard located in this region.

2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir

Please join us this Saturday February 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99).

If you travel to the southern part of the Willamette Valley, you will come up an unassuming gate which brings you down a long, winding country road thru beautiful and peaceful woods. Immediately upon leaving the woods you arrive at a breathtaking view of fifty acres of vines that stretch out before you and you have arrived at Iris Vineyards. Named for the wild Douglas Iris that bloom here in the spring, this south facing, bowl-shaped valley is surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Oregon Coast Mountain Range.

Owners Richard Boyles and Pamela Frye are proud to bring you the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99). They began planting their vineyard in 1996 and their first vintage was in 2001. Their 2015 vintage is crafted under the watchful eye of winemaker Aaron Lieberman who joined them in 2008 and he is now going on his tenth vintage at Iris. What first strikes you with the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99) is the bright ruby color as it hits the light as it leaves the bottle. The aromas of raspberry, plum and blackberry are released as you pour it into your glass. In the mouth you are treated to a deep, rich flavor and a long palate which is what makes this wine so versatile with a variety of foods.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99) and you can taste the fabulous effort from Iris Vineyards for yourself.

Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir — A taste of Mendocino

While there are many Pinot Noirs to choose from the trick is to find one that give you a true flavor of this prized grape. Jason and Molly Drew started out almost 20 years ago with one clear goal: to craft pinot noir that highlighted the traditional character of the varietal.

2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

In 2004 they purchased a 26 acre apple orchard that was for sale in the Mendocino Ridge Appellation. While others saw a daunting task ahead them, Jason and Molly Drew only saw ancient oceanic soil, south facing slopes and a true coastal climate a mere 3 miles from the ocean. They planted their pinot noir vines and 10 years later they produced their first crop.

The 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) is known for the low yields and intense concentration that the grapes produce at this site just west of the Anderson Valley. With their long standing tradition of sustainable farming practices they remain focused on traditional methods that include whole cluster and native yeast fermentation, hand punchdowns, and in most cases no fining or filtering. Once in the mouth you are treated to flavors of pomegranate along with a hint of persimmon which leads into a balance and long mineral finish. We here on the east coast have been lucky enough to be treated to some mild temperatures, so while the snow has melted and the path to the grill is clear, why not find that perfectly marbled New York Strip and open up this prized bottle from the Drew Family?

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday, February 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2017 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) and you can taste the fabulous effort from the Drew Family for yourself.

Jordan & Caymus - Super Bowl Battle of the Cabs

2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon

Whether you are a Patriots fan or a Rams fan (or even a Commercial fan) Super Bowl Sunday holds something for everyone. But at Francos Wine Merchants, the battle won't be on the field this weekend; it will be in the glass! We will be pouring two of our best-selling Cabernets at our Weekly Wine Tasting and we invite you to come and root for your favorite one.

Please join us Saturday February 2nd, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99) and the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99).

Hailing from Alexander Valley, the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99) is a consistent favorite among cabernet drinkers. Every vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon strives to achieve that perfect balance of fruit and tannins and the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99), under the watchful eye of Winemaker John Jordan and Rob Davis, is no exception. Upon uncorking the bottle you are met with powerful aromas of cassis and black currants, as well as an intense fragrance of blackberries. Pour it in your glass and beautiful floral notes rise up to greet your olfactory senses and entice you even more. Your first sip reveals a mouthful of ripe cherry flavor surrounded by a solid core that is unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich and seductive flavors are carefully entwined with the fine tannins imparted by the aging in new French oak barrels.

2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

From there if you travel south towards Napa Valley, you will find the home of the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99). This latest offering from Napa winemaking legend Chuck Wagner is a welcome sight whether you are a wine collector or simply a lover of full-bodied California Cabernets. Following in the footsteps of preceding vintages, this wine with its lush, rich flavors of dark Napa fruit all centered around a full-bodied core never disappoints those who love what Napa is all about. Winemaker Chuck Wagner practices a technique called "hang time" where he lets the fruit "hang" on the vine unusually long to develop the suppleness and mature tannins for which Caymus is known. The result of this is a wine with dense opaque purple color and stunning rich flavors of blackberry and cassis.

So for those of you straying from typical Super Bowl Sunday fare and maybe opting for grilling a New York Strip or well-marbled Rib-eye instead, either one of these two California favorites will be the wine to match.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 2nd, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2014 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($54.99) and the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99), and you can decide for yourself which one will take home the trophy.

Saturday is also a great day to stop in for your other Super Bowl supplies, whether you need some Bourbon and/or Rye because you are mixing up some pre-game Manhattans (all on our Small Batch American Whiskey link), or maybe you need some Tequila because tacos and guacamole are on the menu. But it may be that all you need is some beer for your secret chili recipe, but whatever it is, Francos will be here to help. We will be open our regular hours on Sunday, Noon-5:00PM, for those of you who need any last minute supplies.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Join the Culture of Cool with the Wines of Jean‑Paul Brun

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay

One of the most astonishing conundrums seems to me to be people who go out of their way to go to a market where the produce is known to be local and/or fresh, who examine to see where their beef or chicken originate from, or read up on how the hens are housed with the eggs they buy, yet they do not go to the same length of inquiry with their wine. The wines of Jean-Paul Brun hail from a 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon where you will find winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties in a very "hands on" process where he creates some of the most fabulous wines in the region.

We've often talked of the wines of Jean-Paul Brun and this weekend we will be pouring two of them at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday, January 26th 1:00-5:00PM. Jean-Paul Brun is a master craftsman who focuses on making classically styled wines in a natural fashion with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and also no additives applied in the winery. All this effort brings forth a wine that is both the best of terroir as well as the varietal.

Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing for everything from a Roast Chicken with a simple Lemon/Butter/Thyme marinade to an easy mid-week meal of Chicken Thighs baked on a simple mirepoix bed and drizzled with a flavor infused olive oil.

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Next we move over to the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99). A spine of juicy acidity runs straight thru the wine and lifts the fruit flavors thru a long, seamless finish. If it is too cold for some of you to make your way out to the grill, may I suggest you dig out you trusty cast iron pan and cook up a butter-basted pan seared T-bone or Ribeye and pull the cork on this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday January 26th 1:00-5:00PM as we open both the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99) and the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99).

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Heat up this Snowy Weekend with 2016 The Arsonist

2016 The Arsonist

For those of us on the East Coast it looks like we are in for some snow in the coming days. So it's a good weekend to settle into some of the playoff football games and dig out a few comfort food recipes. What you will also need is a fabulous wine to pair and Francos Wine Merchants has one that is perfect.

Stop in this Saturday January 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99) — a terrific blend from California.

Taking a break from straight varietal wines such as Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Malbec, 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99) is a terrific option for those of you who prefer a Meritage or Bordeaux style blend. The Arsonist Red Blend is from the Matchbook Wine Company, a family-owned winery in the Dunnigan Hills region in Northern California. The Giguiere family came from Quebec City to Yolo County in the 1850s in search of land and open ground. Five generations later John and Karl Giguiere have a very intimate knowledge of the region's soil and climate. The Arsonist Red is a blend of primarily Petit Verdot (53%) with the balance comprised of Malbec (28%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (19%). Dark ruby red in the glass, the aromas of violets, blackberry and caramel rise up and mingle with the wines nuance of toasty oak and vanilla notes. Opulent and lush in the mouth, the flavors of dried blueberries and juicy plum tantalize the taste buds and then transition seamlessly into a lengthy finish. This full-bodied wine will have no problem standing up to a pan-seared Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon or a Peppercorn-crusted New York Strip Steak. But if it's a lazy Sunday afternoon and you have the time to braise some Short Ribs in tomato, this wine would shine beautifully.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Don't just dream about how nice this wine may taste, stop in on Saturday January 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2016 The Arsonist ($19.99) and see for yourself what a beautifully styled wine this is and think about some terrific food pairings.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino — Long name, long flavor

2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino

While January weather has been mild for the most part, there are still some cold, damp days that call for an enjoyable red wine to heat up our evenings. The region of Tuscany not only offers up many wines like this, but the 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99) will conjure up images of a picturesque hillside being warmed by the afternoon sun, as soon as you pull the cork. Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring this wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday January 12th 1:00-5:00PM.

Travelling south of Florence about 70 miles, you arrive in the region of Montalcino where is we find the 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99). The brother and sister team of Paolo and Lucia Bianchini are continuing the work of their father, Giuseppe who passed in 2004. The Bianchini family was gifted the estate in 1985 by Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona who had no heirs. The 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99) is organically grown and is made from 100% Sangiovese. The clarity of the ruby red color is what first greets you as you pour this wine into the glass. As you swirl the wine, almost instantly aromas of red berry rise up and burst into a beautiful bouquet. While this wine has a warm approachable style, it is the softness of tannins that create the backbone of flavor. Whether it's a lazy Sunday afternoon and you have time to slow cook a nice Pork Ragu with Garganelli, or you get home late and are making a quick mid-week meal of Bucatini all'Amatriciana, this is the wine you want to pair with your meal.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday January 12th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2015 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino ($24.99).

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Taste the Wines of the Bergström Estate

2015 Bergström Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir

The wines of the Bergström Family will pair perfectly with your Thanksgiving meal. Whether you enjoy the delicate firm structure of a Pinot Noir or a very expressive full-styled Chardonnay, the Bergströms have you covered. Not only do we have three of their exceptional wines in stock, but we will be pouring them at our Weekly Wine Tasting. So please make time to join us on Saturday, November 17th 2018 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome Mr. Drew Viner, Northeast Sales Manager of Brescome Barton, to pour these exceptional wines.

The Bergström story begins with John Bergström who grew up in a small agricultural and logging village in northern Sweden. As a teenager he set out for Oregon in search of the American dream which brought him through medical school where he became a successful surgeon. After meeting his wife Karen and raising five children in his new homeland, John decided to return to his agricultural roots and pursue his dreams of owning a vineyard and eventually founded Bergström Wines. Today the vineyards consist of five biodynamic estate vineyards that span across the Willamette Valley's best appellations, crafting wines that are very much in the Burgundian style.

Let us begin our visit with the 2015 Bergström Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir ($41.99). This pinot noir is an artistic blending from their five estate farmed properties which highlights the fresh fruit character, sweet spices and warm earthiness that the Willamette Valley is best known for. Dark and vibrant, this cherry colored wine has explosive aromas of dark cherries, black currant and blueberries. The silky mouthfeel and mouthwatering finish will have you dreaming of how it will pair with the melody of flavors at the Thanksgiving table.

2015 Bergström Silice Pinot Noir 2015 Bergström Sigrid Chardonnay

Staying with the Pinot Noir grape, we move over to the 2015 Bergström Silice Pinot Noir ($69.99). This wine has a deep and vibrant ruby red color, a youthful violet hue, and a bouquet of candied fruit, warm spices and savory herbs which rise up from the glass. The Bergström Silice has flavors of just-ripe berries that are bursting with juicy acidity, yet not over-ripe or jammy. The firm structure is enhanced by the complex nuances of smoke, spice and exotic wood. This is a fresh and vibrant pinot noir with a solid core of sweet fruit flavors. Dig out your Aunt's famous oyster stuffing recipe because this is the wine that will stand up to it.

Finally we move over to their landmark white wine, the 2015 Bergström Sigrid Chardonnay ($89.99). Known throughout the world, this estate grown, biodynamic wine is the finest expression of Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley. The striking golden color with slight green hue of the 2015 vintage is probably the most mineral and floral Chardonnay they have crafted to date. The bouquet of citrus blossoms, fruit, flint and smoke makes for a lively bouquet that magically does not overpower itself. The flavor profile of this wine is noticeably citrus in the front of the mouth, yet texturally complex in the back of the mouth. The flavors of lemon, lime and grapefruit combine magically and all come together in a silky, crème fraiche finish. The brightness, firmness and elegance of this wine will stun you with its complexity and brings you back to Chardonnay's Burgundian roots.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday November 17th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour wines of the Bergström Estate. As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

Jolly Bolly — Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée

 Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee

Whether you are one who drinks Champagne only at the holidays, or one who drinks it year round, the next few weeks are the weeks where the two will meet. So for the casual Champagne drinker and the serious Champagne drinker we have in stock one that will please you both — the Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99).

First a little history: Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 by Joseph Bollinger, a widely travelled German who had left his country to learn about the Champagne wine trade. Eventually, the Champagne house was taken over by his sons Joseph and Georges and under the guidance of the two brothers it started to gain great renown and they extended their vineyards considerably. The vineyard was passed down through the family surviving wars, phylloxera blight, and untimely deaths. Then in 2008, for the first time in its history, the Champagne House was placed in the care of Jérôme Philipon, a chairman who was not a family member. Under Jérôme's tutelage the House has continued to preserve its traditional expertise while incorporating the best of new technologies.

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99) has a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier. The dosage is a moderate 8 to 9 grams per liter which produces an elegant and dry champagne. You are first captured by the bright golden color and the very fine bubbles for which the Champagne is known. On the nose, you are treated to a beautiful aromatic complexity with aromas of ripe fruit and a touch of spice. Also of note are the hints of baked apple and peach. The real joy comes with your first taste which exudes a subtle combination of structure, length and vivacity. The flavors of pear, brioche and notes of fresh walnut are carried by the Champagne's lively effervescence. The flavors make you think past just using the wine for celebratory purposes and instead make you dream of meals where shrimp, prawn, poultry or lobster take the helm.

Saturday Tasting: So please join us on Saturday November 10th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99). As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order this wine or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

2016 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape — A Robert Parker 97

2016 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape

When an outstanding property and a perfect growing season collide, we all benefit. Beaucastel is perhaps the most famous Chateauneuf du Pape dating back to 1549 and this weekend we will be pouring their most famous wine the 2016 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape ($79.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting Saturday October 13th 1:00-5:00PM.

Beaucastel is foremost a family story, the story of the Perrin family. The story starts in the 16th Century when records show Pierre de Beaucastel buying land in Coudoulet. Jump to 1909 when Pierre Perrin purchased the land from his father in law and the property has stayed in the Perrin family ever since. After Pierre Perrin, Beaucastel was managed by Jacques Perrin until 1978, and after that Jacques' sons Jean Pierre and Francois Perrin have managed the family property.

Beaucastel is known for planting all 13 varietals allowed by AOC Law: Grenache, Mouvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, Vaccarese, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc and Roussane. The rocky terrain absorbs the sunlight and holds the heat from the sun and transfers the heat to the vines after sunset. Beaucastel farms their property using sustainable farming techniques and, in fact, was one of the first estates in Chateauneuf du Pape to begin to farm their vineyards organically. Given a solid 97, the Robert Parker review reads as follows:

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Bottled only a week before my visit, I was blown away by how well Beaucastel's 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape was showing. It's full-bodied, creamy, lush and rich, with layers of raspberry fruit, garrigue and spice that unfold across a seamless palate. No doubt it will go through cycles of being open and closed throughout its lifespan, but it would be a mistake to simply order a case, put it into storage and forget about it without trying one first and swooning over the sheer lusciousness and youthful complexity. (JC) (8/2018)

2016 Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel

Please join us on Saturday October 13th from 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape ($79.99) along with the 2016 Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel ($24.99). This Zinfandel from the Bedrock Wine Co. has plenty of juiciness with a beautiful medium to garnet purple color. The palate is full-bodied with flavors of nuts, earth and spiced cake all flowing into a spicy finish.

2014 Grgich Hill Chardonnay — Short on vowels, long on flavor

2015 Grgich Hills Chardonnay

Napa Valley is home to some our most loved wines and Grgich Hills Estates is no exception. Francos Wine Merchants just received a shipment of the 2015 Grgich Hills Chardonnay ($36.99) and we will be showcasing this wine at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, September 22nd 1:00-5:00PM.

Miljenjo "Mike" Grgich founded his namesake winery in 1977 and became immediately known as "The King of Chardonnay". Jumping to present day Mike, along with his daughter Violet and his nephew Ivo Jeramaz are committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability and farm their estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides and rely on wild yeast fermentation to handcraft food-friendly wines that are balanced and elegant.

Enter their 2015 Grgich Hills Chardonnay ($36.99) as one of their star players. Their Chardonnay vines grow in their American Canyon and Carneros vineyards in the southern tip of Napa Valley, near San Pablo Bay. The cool maritime breezes and morning fog allow the grapes to slowly ripen, producing complex flavors and a natural acidity that is impossible to achieve in warmer climates. The 2014 weather was on the dry side which produced small berries packed with concentrated flavors. The wine displays ripe peach, mango and tropical flavors. A note of minerality means this wine can be enjoyed with fresh seafood as well as roasted chicken and grilled pork.

2018 Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday September 22nd 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2015 Grgich Hills Chardonnay ($36.99). Also on Saturday, we will be pouring the 2018 Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre ($22.99) — a delightful Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley.

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order this wine or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

Don't be a Bore, Serve Cahors

2017 Chateau de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse'

Nowadays when you say "Malbec" most people think of Argentina but it is in France where this grape originated, specifically from the region of Cahors in Southern France. Francos Wine Merchants just received shipment of a classically styled Malbec from this region that we will be pouring this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us Saturday, September 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) from Cahors. While Malbec has played a supporting role in Bordeaux as a blending grape for years, it is when you move to Southwest France, particularly the Cahors appellation, where this grape has flourished. In both Cahors as well as the Loire, this grape is often referred to as "Cot" by the locals.

As we travel to Cahors we find winemaker Julien Ilbert toiling among his vines that have been in his family for generations. His 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99) is one of his prized efforts. Often referred to as the "Black Grape," this grape's thin skin is what makes it so susceptible to climate and soil conditions. In the terroir of Cahors regions this grape produces a very dark color and tremendous flavors of blackberry fruit. This wine in particular shows off these berry flavors mostly due to the limestone soil that is widespread throughout the region. Unlike its beefier South American cousins, this Malbec is light in style, yet still big in flavor and would be a perfect pairing for a Flat Iron Steak or even a more full-flavored Rib-Eye.

Saturday Tasting: Join us this Saturday September 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2017 Château de Combel-la-Serre 'Le Pur Fruit du Causse' ($14.99). It will be a great opportunity to taste a wine from the region where it originated.

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order this wine or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.

You Say Burgundy and So Do We

2017 Jean Manciat Macon-Charnay

Labor Day is here which signifies the unofficial end of Summer but those of us who hate to see it go hope that the seasonal temperatures will last a few more weeks. But with a three-day weekend looming, Francos Wine Merchants has two fabulous wines from Burgundy that are perfect to tote along to any holiday weekend gathering both of which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday September 1st 1:00-5:00PM.

First up we have the 2017 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay ($15.99) — an excellent example of white Burgundy from the Mâconnais. When Jean Manciat took over his family estate he replanted extensively but kept as many of the old vines as possible. Jean Manciat's vines are grown sustainably on just 9 hectares of land and produce low yields of intensely flavored grapes. Manciat's philosophy of natural farming extends to his cellars, where the wine is made using only the grape's natural yeast to best express terroir. Maturing in stainless steel best preserves the vibrant fruit characteristic of Mâcon-Charnay and helps express the fruity, floral aromas and flinty minerality that characterize the best Chardonnay in the region.

2015 Bouchard Reserve Bourgogne

Remaining in the Burgundy region but focusing on the red wines, we have the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99). In 1731, Michel Bouchard founded Bouchard Pere & Fils. While they are known for some of the most famous wines in Burgundy, their simple Reserve Bourgogne Pinot Noir shows off its elegance right from the start with the bright ruby color in the glass. There is no denying that the old world nose, classic to true Burgundies, is present here. Nuances of cherry and plum rise up to the nose, and once on the palate, the wine's red fruit core meshes well with the flavor of wood spice and strong limestone minerality which is all balanced out by the wine's excellent acidity.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday September 1st, 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2017 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay ($15.99) and the 2015 Bouchard Réserve Bourgogne ($18.99).

As always, if you are unable to attend our Wine Tasting, you can order these or any of the wines we taste by clicking on any wine name in this email, or on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page.

An Array of Rosé

2018 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rose 2018 Aix Rose

We have been treated to some Summer heat this week, and there is no better way to counter the heat than with the refreshing taste of Rosé. Francos Wine Merchants has a selection of Rosé wines that we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday June 23rd 1:00-5:00PM.

Our selection of Rosé will start off in Provence where we find the 2018 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rosé ($17.99). This rosé is made with the little known Tibouren grape almost exclusively found in Provence. Pale pink in color with a clean nose of citrus combined with fresh acidity makes for an incisive and lively palate that is most refreshing on a warm summer afternoon. Staying in Provence we also have the 2018 Aix Rosé ($18.99). A classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault gives this rosé fruit aromas of strawberry and mango. A perennial warm weather favorite, the Aix Rosé pairs perfectly with seafood or grilled chicken.

2017 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendomois Rose 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rose

Moving over to the Loire, we find the 2017 Henri Bourgeois Coteaux du Vendômois Rosé ($13.99). The Pineau d'Aunis grape, which is native to the region, produces a very dry rosé with hints of strawberry and citrus. Staying in the Loire but moving to the appellation of Sancerre, we find the 2016 Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rosé ($26.99). Produced by Michel Reverdy and imported by Kermit Lynch, this Sancerre Rosé is comprised entirely of Pinot Noir Grape from vines with an average age of 30 years. Its invitingly pink color hints at aromas of soft red fruit and flavors of strawberry with noted minerality. While delicate in color, this wine has a bold flavor and would pair perfectly with grilled red meats as well as grilled white meats.

2018 Wölffer Estate Rose

Leaving France and coming back to the states and out to Long Island, NY we land at Wolffer Estate Vineyard and the 2018 Wölffer Estate Rosé ($17.99). The bright salmon-copper color is what first entices you with this elegant wine. The floral and flinty aromas segue seamlessly to the peach and apricot flavors on the palate. While this wine can be enjoyed on its own, the blend of 50% Merlot and 26% Chardonnay (with the balance made up of Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Gewurztraminer) gives it the ability to shine with any number of your summer menus.

So please join us Saturday, June 23rd 1:00-5:00PM for our Rosé Tasting.

As always, if you are unable to join us, you can order our tasting wines by clicking on the Tasting link here or on our Home Page. You can browse our entire selection of Rosé by clicking on our Refreshing Summer Rosé link.

We look forward to seeing you online or in our store soon.
