Thanksgiving Thoughts from California & Oregon

2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Here we are, Thanksgiving is next week and although the gatherings will look different for us this year, Francos can still help make the day as festive as possible. Last week we looked at some wine choices from Burgundy, so this week let's go west and see what California and Oregon have to offer.

Looking first to California, if we make a pit stop in Sonoma where we find Flowers Vineyard & Winery founded in 1989 by Walt and Joan Flowers when they purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Their 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) enjoys the Pacific Coast's bright sunny days and cool evening breezes and even the occasional chilly morning fog all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. Using only organic and sustainable farming practices, the wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific Ocean.

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

For those of you who enjoy a very structured Pinot Noir with your turkey meal, you can easily transition to the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99). Also benefiting from the same cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing not only with your holiday turkey, but with many of the other flavors from vegetables and side dishes that are on the Thanksgiving table.

2018 Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvee

For those of you who prefer the Oregon style of Pinot Noir, we suggest you revisit a wine we highlighted a few weeks ago, the 2018 Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvée ($34.99). Cristom Vineyards is located about 40 miles from the Pacific Ocean and planted on a diverse range of volcanic soils in the Eola Hills. Founded by Paul Gerrie and his wife Eileen in 1992, who both had respect not only for the land but also the pinot noir grape, as well as a love of the natural winemaking process. The 2018 Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvée ($34.99) greets you with an inviting bright red hue followed by enticing aromas of fresh berry and candied rose scents. This very structured wine offers flavors of raspberry crumble with crunchy red fruit, tangy acidity and a long finish which makes it another interesting choice for your Thanksgiving holiday.

For our other Thanksgiving suggestions, but sure to check out this week's installment of Francos Wine Minute located on our Home Page.

Thanksgiving Thoughts from Burgundy

2017 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin

November is moving along and Thanksgiving is gradually creeping upon us. While there are many wine choices you can make for this meal, today we are going to focus on some selections from Burgundy. Our gathering may be on the smaller side this year, but the wine choices are large, so let Francos help you narrow them down.

2017 Louis Jadot Meursault

Louis Jadot is a Burgundy producer who never disappoints and since 1859 has amassed a nearly unparalleled reputation for quality in Burgundy. Two fantastic choices come to mind when considering wines for your Thanksgiving dinner. The first is the 2017 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin ($69.99). This red Burgundy presents a deep color, while complex aromas of berry and red fruit notes betray a full and lush palate. The oak in the nose is prominent and balanced out with a nuance lush with black cherry, cassis, violet and forest floor scents. But if your taste leans more towards a white Burgundy, the 2017 Louis Jadot Meursault ($69.99) is the white Burgundy you want to explore. The fresh nose of hazelnut, citrus and honeysuckle is how you are greeted when you first pour this wine. The rich, vibrant and intense flavors of ripe fruit possess a lovely mouthfeel that is quite dry and guides you seamlessly into a long and supple finish. You can explore all the wine from Louis Jadot on our Jadot Burgundy link.

2018 Bachelet Monnot Chassange Montrachet 2018 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Prisse

Moving to a different Burgundy producer and village, brothers Marc and Alex Bachelet have made great inroads in recent years and their 2018 Bachelet Monnot Chassange Montrachet ($76.99) is one of the stars in their portfolio. A ripe, yet restrained nose shyly reflects notes of resin, pear, apple and an admirably discreet dollop of wood. There is fine volume and surprisingly good power to the vibrant and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and persistence. This is an excellent example of a white Burgundy from the village of Chassagne and is definitely worth considering for your holiday table.

2018 Les Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette 2018 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Pouilly Fuisse en Chatenay

Lastly we have the wines of Dominique Lafon who makes some of the most famous and sought after wines in Burgundy. The following wines are all produced under the Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon label, a biodynamic trailblazing effort in the Mâconnais. We discussed these wines a few weeks ago but three of his wines are worth a second look as they are all contenders for your Thanksgiving meal. All certified biodymamic, they are the 2018 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Prisse ($27.99), the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99) and the 2018 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Pouilly Fuisse en Chatenay ($47.99).

Coudoulet de Beaucastel — There's no place like Rhône

2018 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone

The Fall weather has set in and so has our craving for wines that will help shake off the autumn chill. This is the perfect time to explore wines from the Rhône, located in southern France.

The magic of the Rhône lays in the very rocky soil of this region. Made out of Molasse seabed covered by diluvial alpine deposits, these rocks are called "Galets Roulés" by the French and play a big role in the development of the grapes. These stones take up the heat during the day and slowly release it at night which helps give a good start to the vines during the spring, and also helps ripen the grapes after the growing season gets underway.

Chateau de Beaucastel is the property of one of the most famous producers in the Rhône, the Perrin Family. Today we are going to focus on the 2018 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($29.99). The 30 hectares of Coudoulet are located just east of the vineyard of Beaucastel where they produce their famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it is often referred to as "Baby Beaucastel." The full flavor of the plush style of this wine comes from the cepage which is a blend of several of the classic Rhône grapes — Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. The 2018 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($29.99) has complex notes of peppery spice and dark fruit that drinks well right out of the gate. Evenly balanced with grippy tannins the wine gives off a mouthful of pleasure and leads into a zesty and long finish. So if you are thinking of a fall comfort meal of Braised Lamb Shanks, or perhaps you want to start considering wines for your Thanksgiving holiday, we suggest that you stop in and pick up a bottle of the 2018 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($29.99) and see for yourself why Chateau de Beaucastel and the Perrin Family are famous throughout the Rhône.

The 2018 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone ($29.99) is one of our November Cellar Specials as well as the subject of this week's Wine Minute, both of which can be found on our Home Page.

Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir — return to Oregon

2018 Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvee

Seeing as it has been a while since many of us have traveled, you can always rely on Francos Wine Merchants to take you someplace via a fabulous bottle of wine. This week we would love to take you to the Willamette Valley in Oregon as we just received shipment of a terrific Pinot Noir.

Cristom Vineyards is located about 43 miles from the Pacific Ocean and planted on a diverse range of volcanic soils in the Eola Hills. Founded by Paul Gerrie and his wife Eileen in 1992, who both had respect not only for the land but also the pinot noir grape, as well as a love of the natural winemaking process. Now, more than 25 years later, second generation winegrower Tom Gerrie along with winemaker Steve Doerner head their viniculture team in producing elegant and dynamic wines. They practice biodynamic farming practices using only native yeasts and their wines are Certified Sustainable.

While Cristom Vineyards has several vineyard sites, today we are going to focus on the 2018 Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvée ($34.99). Named after Mount Jefferson located in the Cascade Range, this wine is crafted in a vibrant and expressive style. Sourcing from a blend of the Cristom estate Pinot Noir and the whole-cluster fermentation by native yeast both play into what makes the wines of Cristom Vineyards stand-outs among the wines of the Willamette Valley. The 2018 Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvée ($34.99) greets you with an inviting bright red hue followed by enticing aromas of fresh berry and candied rose scents. This very structured wine offers flavors of raspberry crumble with crunchy red fruit, tangy acidity and a long finish. So whether you want to serve something simple like Salmon with a sauté of wild fall mushrooms, or fancy it up with a Spiced Squab with Onion Compote, this is the wine you want to consider.

You can find this wine on both our New Arrivals and Organic & Naturally Produced Wine links on our Home Page.

Château de Parenchère - Share the Love

2016 Chateau de Parenchere

Leaves are falling, temperature is dropping, but the hunt for a bargain is always on the rise. Today that hunt brings us to France where we have come across a small Bordeaux Supérieur that not only works with a variety of menus, but is also easy on the wallet, making it a wine you can share at your small gatherings.

Bordeaux Supérieur is an appellation tier made within the Bordeaux and as the name implies are slightly "superior" to your standard Bordeaux AOC wines. They are generally not aged that long in the barrel and therefore often offer an easy-drinking profile. These wines feature the grapes of Bordeaux, relying mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc.

All this brings us to our featured wine, the 2016 Château de Parenchère ($14.99). Located about 25 miles from Saint-Emilion at the crossroads of Gironde and Dordogne, the property that comprises Château de Parenchère rises in the heart of a green and hilly landscape. The terroir in this Bordeaux region is composed of mostly clay and limestone, and it is the high clay content which explains the power of the wines produced there. The foundation of this estate was laid in 1570 but was most recently renovated in 1958 by Raphael Gazaniol and today is in the hands of his son Jean and granddaughter Julia demonstrating that great wines can come from lesser-known terroirs.

The vineyards are planted with several varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Among the wines they produce, the 2016 Château de Parenchère ($14.99) is one of the classic cuvées of the estate. The wine is sourced from 25 year old vines and this is one of the major factors that make this full and fleshy wine so inviting. This wine displays intense red fruit aromas of cassis and black cherry that are balanced out by elegant, soft tannins. The ripe fruit expression and the wine's bright freshness add to the wine's appeal as an easy drinking crowd pleaser. This wine is built for simple dishes whether it be a quick beef stew that's been in the crockpot all day, or even some burgers or a quick flank steak on the grill for a mid-week dinner. This wine would also not be out of place at a small, casual gathering where one has to balance price and quality.

We switched up this week's Wine Minute to chat about Litchfield Bourbon; if you have 60 seconds to spare, view the video on our Home Page.

Dominique Lafon — Biodynamic from Burgundy

2018 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Prisse 2018 Les Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette

Bargains in Burgundy have been rather elusive lately, and so we were happy that some of the wines of Dominique Lafon came into our orbit. We highlighted one of his wines last month and since then a couple more have arrived. These wines are perfect as we enter the autumn and winter months.

For those of you unfamiliar, Dominique Lafon makes some of the most famous and sought after wines in Cotes de Beaune under the Domaine du Comte Lafon label. In 1999 he founded the Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, a biodynamic trailblazing effort in the Mâconnais. Unlike other Beaune producers who did the same, Dominique Lafon did so by not trying to produce a Beaune style wine from this famed region, but rather striving for wines of quality while keeping the characteristics of the Mâcon region as the goal, and this is where we are going to focus today.

2018 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Pouilly Fuisse en Chatenay

Starting off, we have the 2018 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Prisse ($27.99). This certified biodynamic chardonnay is from 25 year old vines. The fleshy, bright flavor with aromas of citrus and melon is a direct result of the clay-limestone soil of the area. If you want to travel up the ladder a bit, the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99) definitely brings you up a rung or two. Here the vines enjoy the same clay-limestone soil but are on a steep, south-facing slope where the grapes ripen to near perfection and are among the first to be picked. This wine has a substantial weight and a satiny texture all balanced off by a lively acidity. Now if we climb to the near top of the ladder we have the 2018 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Pouilly Fuisse en Chatenay ($47.99). Here the clay-limestone soil has a bit more iron to it and the vines are 50 plus years in age. The result is a crisp, clear yellow hue with notes of white flowers and toasted nuts. This full-bodied wine is elegant and textured with racy acids and a solid depth that goes right to the core.

All these wines from Dominique Lafon are a perfect portal into your fall menus of roast chicken, seared duck breast and there are even some contenders here for your holiday turkey. All these wines are organic and certified biodynamic and you can find all them on our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines link on our Home Page.

2017 Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin — Last Call

2017 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin

All good things must come to an end, and we have just purchased the last remaining cases of a terrific red Burgundy and we don't want you to miss out. Now that we have the holidays gradually inching closer, wines like these will not last long and we definitely encourage you to take a look.

Louis Jadot has been in operation since 1859, and has amassed a nearly unparalleled reputation for quality in Burgundy. The 2017 Louis Jadot was an exceptional vintage showing off the pure expression of terroir that only the best Burgundy in the best years can offer. So let's take a look at the 2017 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin ($69.99).

The 2017 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin ($69.99) presents a deep color, while complex aromas of berry and red fruit notes betray a full and lush palate. The oak in the nose is prominent and balanced out with a nuance lush with black cherry, cassis, violet and forest floor scents. The rich, generously proportioned and supple flavors exhibit good salinity and a lingering finish that firms up nicely in the mouth. This Gevrey-Chambertin vintage is classically styled with a modest 13% alcohol which is already drinking well but will have no trouble aging for several decades. The wine's excellent structure and long finish make it an excellent match for heartier fare such as boeuf bourguignon, or roast leg of lamb.

You can find the 2017 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin ($69.99) as one of our October Cellar Specials as well as on our Jadot Burgundy link, both on our Home Page.

The Rare Wines of BOND & Harlan Estate

2016 Harlan Estate 2016 BOND Melbury

Our aim at Francos Wine Merchants for the most part is focused on your everyday food and wine pairings, but every once in a while something special comes along that while not for the everyday, they are always nice to read about. This week Francos Wine Merchants received some of the limited edition wines from both Harlan Estate and BOND Estate.

Founded in 1984 by Bill Harlan, Harlan Estate is a winegrowing estate in the western hills of Oakville, California in the heart of the Napa Valley. He purchased the 240 acre property which had steep hillsides, multiple elevations and various exposures. Bill Harlan's goal was to create a world-class Cabernet Sauvignon with Grand Cru quality. Harlan Estate dedicated his first 40 acres to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% to Merlot, 8% to Cabernet Franc and 2% to Petit Verdot. The hillside setting was comprised of both volcanic and sedimentary bedrock and he used a combination of terraced vineyards and closely spaced vines on spare soils over fractured rock. He released his first vintage in 1990 and by 1994 he achieved "Cult Cabernet" status by scoring his first of many 100 point ratings from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

2016 BOND Quella 2016 BOND St. Eden

His success teamed him up with his old friend and winemaker Bob Levy. With Bob as his winemaker they founded BOND Estate in 1997 and set out to produce what they called "The best expression of land thru Cabernet Sauvignon." Sourced from select hillside estates in Napa, the Cabernet Sauvignon wines of BOND came under five labels: The BOND Melbury, Quella, St. Eden, Vecina and Pluribus. These small hillside Cabernet vineyards, ranging in size from 7 to 11 acres, became the basis for the wines of BOND Estate.

Both the Harlan Estate and the BOND Estate wines are being sold in their original 3-Bottle wooden cases and the prices are listed below. While these are wines of distinctive quality and are meant for the Collector, it does showcase the dedication Francos Wine Merchants has to all their wines at every level and reminds you that you can always find something extraordinary at Francos.

2016 BOND Vecina 2016 BOND Pluribus

2016 Harlan Estate ($4,500.00) - 3 Bottle Case

The Return of Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon

2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

September is inching to a close; October is on the horizon and the temperature is starting to fall. As the seasons change so do our food and wine choices, so Francos would like to reacquaint you with one of our favorite estates, Frank Family Vineyards.

I know we have relayed the story of Rich and Leslie Frank before, but to refresh your memory they found their way to Napa Valley separately but eventually their love of Napa Valley, the wines and the vineyards brought them together, they married, and in 1992 they founded Frank Family Vineyards. As proprietors of Frank Family Vineyards they work closely with winemaker Todd Graff in the blending of their wines as well as manage everything on the business aspect of the property including sales and marketing. Now we come to the best part, the 2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99).

The 2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) is a blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) along with the remaining 10% being Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The incredible dark ruby/purple color is the first greeting of this flagship Cabernet. As the wine hits your palate, you are treated with seamlessly woven flavors of black cherry and cocoa. The sumptuous and seductive structure of this wine offers up hazelnut, baked plum and concentrated tannins. This wine is full-bodied with primary flavors of berries and dark chocolate which become apparent as the wine opens up. So for those of you who really enjoy the taste and flavors of a classic California Cabernet, our recommendation for this week is to purchase your favorite cut of beef, grill it to perfection on a cool September evening and your reward will be to warm yourself up with a glass of the 2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99).

2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay

For those of you who prefer a California white wine, we would like to remind you that we also have the 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay ($29.99). This tremendous effort from the Franks offers up nuances of toasted brioche, and the nose leads you directly into a creamy, full body core that you expect from a Carneros Chardonnay. Layers of yellow apple, lemon curd and baked pear tantalize the taste buds as this wine first enters your mouth. The flavors are flawlessly balanced with vanilla and baking spice which lead you directly into a long and lasting finish. So roast a chicken to perfection with a bevy of autumn root vegetables from the local farmers market and you will be in wine nirvana.

You can find both of these wines on our New Arrivals link on our Home Page and see them featured in this week's Wine Minute, also on the Home Page just after the Cellar Specials.

The Fall Arrival of Lafon Mâcon Chardonnay "Clos de la Crochette"

2018 Les Heritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette

The white shorts have been put away, the evening sweatshirt has come out of the closet, and your favorite food blogs have started to feature the comfort foods of fall. Now is the time to start to transition our wines towards those with a bit more weight as we welcome the change of the season.

Dominique Lafon has been at in command of his family's property for over thirty years. This property came under the control of the Lafon family when his grandfather, Jules Lafon took the helm in 1931. The biggest changes Dominique Lafon has made in his 30 year reign has been acquiring complete control by bringing an end to all their sharecropping agreements and of course making the domaine completely organic and biodynamic.

While Dominique Lafon has over 17 hectares throughout Burgundy, today we are going to focus on their property in Mâcon and specifically the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99). The grapes of Clos de la Crochette are usually the first to be picked on Lafon's Mâconnais estate. The south-facing slope combined with the clay-limestone soil ripen the fruit to near perfection which gives this wine an enticing oyster-shell reduction reminiscent of a wine of Chablis. Beautifully scented with floral orchard fruit, one can easily pick up the notes of Williams pear, Cox apple and citrus on the nose. Bright and clear this seductive wine beckons you with a beautiful lemon-yellow hue from the moment you pour it into your glass. The substantial weight has a satiny texture and good concentration with a lively acidity throughout. The apple and herb flavors build on the palate as one enjoys the intense, long and gathered structure of this fine effort from Dominique Lafon.

With so many Saturday night dinners now being cooked at home, why not make your first Roast Duck of the season, or perhaps a Chicken & Prosciutto Rollatini or even a simple Baked Halibut Florentine, and pop open a bottle of the 2018 Les Héritiers Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette ($34.99) and suddenly the end of summer won't seem so bad.

You can find this wine on both our Organic & Naturally Produced Wines and New Arrivals links on our Home Page.

Welcome September with 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

September is underway and we can feel it in the cool mornings and chilly evenings, a subtle sign from Mother Nature to start transitioning out of our summer habits and into fall. One way we do that is with our wine as well as our menus which brings us to the wines of Domaine Eden.

South of San Francisco in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains we find the home of Domaine Eden. Purchased in 2007 the vineyards of Domaine Eden were founded and built by the late Tom Mudd in 1983 when it was the former Cinnabar Winery. Now, under the ownership of Jeffrey and Ellie Patterson, the vineyards of Mount Eden Estate have begun a new life. At their vineyards located just a short distance away from Mount Eden, the Pattersons have redirected their focus on all their wines, one of which is the incredible 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99).

The 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) offers up wonderful flavors of smoke and dried pear with a hint of toasted nuts. Supple and polished on the palate, this wine is noted for its purity, freshness and rock-solid finish. Some exceptional food complements include a simple Shrimp Scampi, lemony Salmon Croquettes, and even the first Roasted Chicken of the fall season flavored with late season herbs from the garden and roasted root vegetables which will soon be appearing at the local farmers markets. But no matter what your food taste, the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) has much to offer.

Wines for your Labor Day Weekend

2019 Terres de Saint Louis Rose 2019 Aix Rose

Labor Day Weekend is here, with summer starting to wind down, and while fall is a wonderful season we hope to have a few more weeks of warm weather before we start to break out the sweaters. But we here at Francos have talked about some fabulous wines over the past couple of months, so let us recap the highlights which will be perfect for your Labor Day Weekend.

2019 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rose 2019 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

If you are going to bid adieu to summer with lobster then you need to turn to rosé. Francos has some of your favorites on sale from the 2019 Terres de Saint Louis Rosé ($13.99), 2019 Aix Rosé ($19.99) and 2019 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rosé ($19.99) all the way up to the famous 2019 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99). Rosé makes a perfect pairing for any lobster cookout. You can find these wines on our "Refreshing Summer Rosé" link.

2019 Granbazan Albarino Broadbent Vinho Verde

If seafood or clambake is more your style, you have a couple of options to choose from. If you head over to northwest Spain you will find the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99). This classic white wine from Spain's Rias Baixas is made from 100% Albarino, hand-picked and sustainably grown from 35 year old vines. The fresh citrus and orchard fruits accent the bright and mineral-accented nose and palate, making this wine a great pairing with most any seafood. You can also travel over to Portugal where you will find the white wine for which this region is known, the Vinho Verde. The Broadbent Vinho Verde ($9.99), like most, is non-vintage as they are meant to be consumed while young. This wine is a blend of 50% Loureiro, 40% Trajadura, & 10% Pedernã. Clean and balanced with a lively citrus flavor, this wine is a modest 9% in alcohol which makes it perfect for the warmer weather.

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Keeping Labor Day simple with burgers or steak on the grill? Then gamay grape is the way to go. Our suggestion is to revisit the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99). Valérie Forgues own a 16 hectare estate in the Loire and this wine she produces is made from 100% gamay. The vines average 20 years of age and grow in the clay-limestone soil for which the region is known. Working organically (and soon to be certified) Valérie Forgues has produced a gamay that has a fresh, mixed berry nose followed by a pure, fruit flavored palate with a nice touch of acidity.

You can hear about all these wines and more in this week's installment of Francos Wine Minute.

Holiday Hours — Our Hours for the Labor Day Holiday are as follows:

Friday & Saturday 10:00AM - 6:00PM
Sunday & Monday (Labor Day) : Closed

Please note we will be completely Closed on Sunday & Monday with NO Curbside or Delivery services.

Celebrate August with the 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay

2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay

August is winding down and while the days are still warm the nights cool off quickly as the sun starts to set a little earlier. As the mercury dips to more comfortable evening temperatures we can start turning back to wines with a little more weight; enter the 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay ($29.99).

First a little history - Rich and Leslie Frank found their way to Napa Valley separately, but ultimately their love of Napa Valley brought them together. They founded Frank Family Vineyards in 1992 and soon their career in the entertainment industry took a back seat to their love of wine. Now as Frank Family Vineyards proprietors, they manage everything from the business aspect of sales and marketing, to overseeing vineyard purchases and working closely with winemaker Todd Graff in the blending of their wines.

The 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay ($29.99) is sourced from several vineyard sites including the Frank Family Lewis Vineyard. This site consists of 78 acres planted on the rolling hills of Napa-Carneros touching the shores of the San Pablo Bay. The Pacific Ocean creates the cool temperature, fog and wind that make Carneros ideally suited for growing cool climate varieties. Its soil composition consists primarily of shallow and dense clay loam soils, receiving about 20 inches of rainfall annually. All this produces a crop of low yields along with grapes of strong character and balanced acidity.

The 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Chardonnay ($29.99) offers up nuances of toasted brioche, and the nose leads you directly into a creamy, full body core that you expect from a Carneros Chardonnay. Layers of yellow apple, lemon curd and baked pear tantalize the taste buds as this wine first enters your mouth. The flavors are flawlessly balanced with vanilla and baking spice which lead you directly into a long and lasting finish. So here is your last chance to make that roasted chicken with fresh thyme and basil from the garden and slowly roasted on the grill, perfect for these late days of August.

You can find this wine on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

Summer lives on with Granbazàn Albariño

2019 Granbazan Albarino

August is here, the sun is blazing and everyone is looking for a wine to take them to a cooler place. So why not take a quick trip to Spain and refresh your wine world with the Albariño grape?

Today we are going to set our sights on the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99). This classic, crisp white wine from the Rias Baixas region in Northwest Spain is 100% Albariño grape. In 1988, the Appellation of Rias Baixas in Northwest Spain was formally established as a Denomination of Origin, and Albariño became the white wine grape of the region.

Granbazàn Vineyards farms about 17 hectares of Albariño vines which are trained in the traditional pergola fashion in the granite based soil for which the region is known. Winemaker Jesus Otero produces this wine from 35 year old vines. The grapes of Granbazàn are sustainably grown and are all hand harvested. The warm summer days along with evenings which are cooled down by the Atlantic breezes all factor into this fantastic wine. Pale golden in color with a slight green hue, the complex aromas of this wine are what first entice you. Nuances of green apple, citrus and tropical fruit first show up along with a secondary layer of white flowers. In the mouth, the tantalizing sensation of crispy acidity along with more floral intensity of honeysuckle greet your taste buds. This wine shows off a medium to full-bodied weight followed by a deep-set core of flavor and texture ending with a dry, brine-like finish.

These qualities of the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99) are what make it not only a lively, bright wine to enjoy at the end of a warm summer day, but also makes it a great pairing for so many foods. While this wine is perfect with raw oysters and clams, don't hesitate to pair it with some lighter fish dishes or even your favorite seafood ceviche recipe.

You can find 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page and we also talk about it in this week's Wine Minute which you can find on our social media sites as well as our Home Page.

The Wines of François Carillon

2018 Francois Carillon Bourgogne

While appearances of Burgundies have been infrequent lately, we had a nice surprise this week: the arrival of some of the wines of François Carillon at the doorstep of Francos Wine Merchants.

François Carillon and his brother Jacques started off together in Burgundy, but then each went his own way. François now farms 15 hectares in Burgundy and we recently purchased three of his white wines from his 2018 vintage. While the 2018 growing season posed challenges with the extreme heat and dryness, the results turned out to be excellent and in fact may be the best vintage for François since he and his brother went their separate ways.

Let's start off simple with the 2018 Francois Carillon Bourgogne ($29.99). This everyday Bourgogne is the perfect Chardonnay for these August evenings. Showing off a fine concentration of clean fruit, this mid-weight wine offers a superb quality for a wine of this level. The lingering flavors not only hold their own in the mouth, but gracefully lead you into a complex, yet easy finish.

2018 Francois Carillon Chassagne Montrachet 2018 Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet

Moving up the ladder a bit, we have the 2018 Francois Carillon Chassagne Montrachet ($69.99). The notably denser flavor of this wine becomes apparent immediately in the nose of white peach and apricot in this wine. Delivering a creamy texture, this wine shows off excellent depth and length while it guides you into a balanced finale.

Finally we offer to you the 2018 Francois Carillon Puligny Montrachet ($74.99). From the start this wine welcomes you with an exotic nose of passion fruit and acacia blossom paired with nuances of citrus. The relatively sophisticated mouthfeel and middle weight flavors lead you to the realization that this wine shows off a firm, acid spine. All these characteristics gracefully take you into a lingering finish that you just don't want to end.

While we purchased what was available, these wines are all limited in quantity and will not last long. You can find all three of these wines on our New Arrivals link on our Home Page.

Gamay — The Perfect Red for Summer

2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

While hot summer days are a great time to enjoy a crisp white wine or bracing glass of Rosé, sometimes your menu calls for a red wine, so Francos Wine Merchants brings you the Gamay grape.

Gamay is a very close cousin of the Pinot Noir, meaning that it can have enough structure to stand up to full-flavored meals yet not feel heavy in the mouth. While we mostly find the Gamay grape in villages like Brouilly, Morgon and Fleurie, it can also be found in many other growing regions throughout the world. What makes Gamay a great wine for summer, in addition to the easy mouthfeel, is that on a hot day you can actually put a slight chill on this wine without muting the true flavor of the grape; about 20-30 minutes in the refrigerator should do it.

Today we present you with two wines made from the Gamay grape, the first being the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99). This wine from one of our favorite winemakers always gets a great reception from people. As noted on the bottle, this wine is a "Vieilles Vignes" which means it comes from older vines. In this case, they are Jean-Paul Brun's oldest vines which come in at 40-60 years old. These vines grow on a sandy clay-limestone hillside in the village of Charnay, in the southern region of Beaujolais. The farming with Jean-Paul Brun is always organic with manual harvest, and this wine is no exception. The aromas are high-toned and ripe with red currant, raspberry and wild strawberry. On the palate, lush flavors of berry and bright fruit along with a touch of acidity and a long sappy length finish off this wine.

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Next we travel to the Loire Valley and land in Touraine where we find the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99). Valérie Forgues was driven by a desire to make a success of her venture and one of the big changes she made was to start farming organically. With the help of her brother she mastered how to properly work the soils all the while managing her vines and her yields. The result is an organically produced wine that is delicious and well balanced. The deep raspberry color and elegant, fruity nose are the first to entice you. In the mouth the suppleness and structure give this wine a firm mouthfeel and the modest 12% alcohol makes it an easy summertime wine.

So whether you are going to spatchcock a chicken, throw on a steak, or just enjoy a simple burger on the grill, the Gamay grape is where you want to turn. You can find both of these wines on our Organic & Naturally Produced wine link on our Home Page, and they are the subject of this week's Wine Minute, also on our Home Page right under the cellar specials.

2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean — Take a quick trip to the Shore

2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean

If you are not going to the shore this year, it is easy enough to bring the shore to you which can be simple to do with the right wine. The last couple of weeks we have brought you to Spain and Portugal, but this week Francos Wine Merchants brings you back to France.

While the white wines of Burgundy can bring us incredible wines from the villages of Meursault, Chassagne and Puligny which can be very structured in style, sometimes the summer heat calls for a wine that has more crispness to help counter the summer heat; enter Chablis. The vineyards of Chablis in Northern Burgundy are rich in limestone, which is what gives the wines of this region such incredible minerality and sharpness.

Domaine Louis Max owns more than 230 hectares of vineyards, all of which are organically farmed. Their dedication to organic practices allows them to focus on quality rather than quantity. Under the guidance of David Duband, Louis Max has made sustainability their key focus as they want to ensure the Domaine will be passed on to future generations.

The vineyards that bring us their 2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean ($23.99) are spread across hillsides rich in limestone in the north of Burgundy. Here the continental climate, hot in the summer and very cold in the winter all factor into the production of this fabulous white Burgundy. This wine greets you with a yellow/gold brilliant hue with beautiful green reflections. Aromas of honey tantalize the nose while in the mouth we are treated to citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit along with an underlying delicate touch of mineral and a lengthy finish. The briny quality of this Chablis makes it a classic pairing with oysters and seafood, but this wine is also very at home with some simple goat cheese or even a creamy, rich wedge of gruyere.

You can find the 2018 Louis Max Chablis Saint Jean ($23.99) on the New Arrivals link on our Home Page as well as our Organic & Naturally Produced wine link.

2019 Granbzranban Albarino — Spain's Wine for the Season

2019 Granbazan Albarino

The mercury has been on the rise lately and along with it, the humidity. This is the time of year where we seek out wines that offer a refreshing respite from the summer heat and one of these wines is produced from the Albariño grape from Spain.

In 1988, the Appellation of Rias Baixas in Northwest Spain was formally established as a Denomination of Origin, and Albariño became the white wine grape of the region.

Within the Rias Baixas, in the region of Galicia, we find the 2019 Granbazan Albariño ($19.99). Granbazàn Vineyards farms about 17 hectares of Albariño vines which are trained in the traditional pergola fashion in the granite based soil for which the region is known. Broadbent Vinho Verde — Ease into Summer

 Broadbent Vinho Verde

July is here; summer is underway and a great time to find wines to pair with your casual dinners and backyard get-togethers. One of our favorite wines for the season is Vinho Verde — the delicious white wine from Portugal perfect for summer weather.

The most important thing to know is that Vinho Verde is not a grape, but a region in northern Portugal. While there are several origin stories behind its name, the most common is that Vinho Verde translates as "Green Wine" as it is harvested early and meant to be drunk young. As a matter of fact, it can be so young that it is not unusual for many Vinho Verde to not have a vintage to it.

But all this brings us to our wine of the week, the Broadbent Vinho Verde ($9.99), Winemaker Bartholomew Broadbent has comprised a blend of indigenous grapes, Loureiro, Trajadura, & Pedernã, to make this fabulous wine. The soils of this region are acid-rich and granite-base with areas of slate and clay. This, combined with the gentle slopes of the region produce a wine that is beautifully fresh with flavors of tart green apple, white peach, and melon. Deliciously crisp with a zesty finish, this wine enjoys a slight effervescence (also a common characteristic of this wine) which makes it very enjoyable on a summer afternoon. This wine also boasts a modest 9% alcohol content which makes it all the more perfect for backyard enjoyment. As for food pairings, all over Portugal, seafood is the dominate cuisine, particularly meaty white fish. So if you visit the fish market and see monkfish, sea bass or even some fresh cod, don't pass up the chance to pair it with this wine. Wines for your 4th of July

2020 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

The 4th of July is the highpoint of summer and whether you are packing up the car and traveling to the beach or only going as far as your backyard Francos Wine Merchants has some perfect wine choices for any destination.

If you are going to do a clam bake or seafood over the holiday weekend, then we have a couple of choices for you. The 2020 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($30.99) with its crisp style and citrus finish makes it a great choice. One of Marlborough's five original vineyards, the Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is a wine that sets the bar for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The complex array of flavors from white grape fruit and lemon verbena makes it quite refreshing on hot summer afternoon. But if you really want to set off some fireworks, you have to go with the 2019 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99) hailing from France's Cote de Provence. The Domaines Ott has a full flavor and classic dry style and makes it a perfect match with any seafood.

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

If your plans for the 4th are to throw a steak on the grill or maybe even keeping it simple with some burgers and you are in the mood for a red wine, then consider the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) or the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99). Both of these wines are made from 100% Gamay grape which has the structure you are looking for when pairing with red meat, but the mouthfeel has an easy-drinking medium weight to it. The other benefit of choosing Gamay grape for a summer day is that if the weather gets to the hot and humid side, you can put a slight chill on this red wine (20 or 30 minutes in the fridge should do it) and you can still enjoy this wine without muting the true flavors of the Gamay grape.

Holiday Hours: Our hours for the 4th of July weekend are as follows:

Friday July 3rd 10:00AM-6:00PM
Saturday July 4th 9:00AM - 1:00PM
Sunday July 5th & Monday July 6th - CLOSED

Welcome Summer with Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Rosé

2019 Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence

Summer has officially started, and while this year gatherings may be more subdued than usual, what has not changed is the arrival of some of our favorite wines of the summer season including the classic wine of summer, rosé. While many rosés have flooded the market the past few years and represent almost every wine growing region, the region that made this wine famous was Provence.

Enter Domaines Ott where in 1896 Marcel Ott, a young graduate in agronomy engineering from Alsace, found himself traveling through Provence, a small region in southwest France a stone's throw away from the Mediterranean. A phylloxera outbreak had just finished wreaking havoc throughout the region and so land was cheap, but Marcel Ott knew that while everything had to be replanted, there was still life left to these vineyards. Now, 120 years later, Christian and Jean-Francois Ott dedicate their lives to carrying on their ancestor's love of the land centered in the Côtes de Provence.

While Domaines Ott has several vineyard sites, today we are going to focus on a wine from one of their most prized vineyards, the 2019 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99). Chateau de Selle was the first estate acquired by Marcel in 1912 located in the town of Taradeau, northwest of Saint Tropez. Here the vines for this world-renown rosé thrive in the soil comprised of red clay, dolomite and sandstone. Perched high on limestone inland slopes where the vines are sheltered from winter frosts, the vineyard enjoys a microclimate of mild winters, early spring and warm, dry summers flooded with sunshine. The average age of the vines at Chateau de Selle is 19 years and the estate is about 140 hectares of the following four varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon which lends this wine its complexity and elegance; Grenache which provides a full-bodied texture; Cinsault which adds a delicate soft nuance; and Syrah which provides its rich color. Dry and crisp, this wine is a perfect match for clams, oysters and all seafood. You should not miss the chance to experience this wine.

You can find the 2019 Domaines Ott Château de Selle Côtes de Provence ($49.99) as well as our entire selection of rosé on the Refreshing Summer Rosé link on our Home Page.

Father's Day Gift Ideas & Phase 2 Changes from Francos

2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Father's Day is this weekend and some Dads are Wine drinkers and some Dads are Whiskey drinkers, but no matter what is his favorite drink, Francos Wine Merchants has all the best on sale for Father's Day.

2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Most Dads like to celebrate their day out by the grill. If Dad enjoys throwing a delicious Ribeye or T-bone steak on the grill, then that means Cabernet Sauvignon. You can go with something modest like the 2016 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($49.99) from Napa Valley. This delicious offering from Paul Hobbs has exquisite structure and weight with an aroma of dark cherry and a lengthy finish full of soft tannins. If you want to move up the ladder a bit, you can with the 2018 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99); its classic Napa style shows off its dark, rich color with layered flavors of cocoa, cassis and dark berry. But if you really want to hit a home-run with Dad, you have to go with the 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($149.99). Howell Mountain is the most prized district in all of Napa, and wine with its brooding bouquet and flavors of blackberry and licorice would make a great addition to any cellar.

2017 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Bourgogne 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

If Dad prefers a wine with a little more finesse, then you have to consider Pinot Noir. The 2017 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Bourgogne ($37.99) hails from the Chorey les Beaune region in Burgundy. This wine shows a well-balanced mouthfeel offering juicy cranberry and fresh raspberry flavors with a dash of spice on the finish, perfect if Dad is thinking of some lamb kebobs on the grill. But if Dad prefers the taste of an American Pinot Noir, then you have to go with the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99). Boasting a deep garnet color and floral aromas of cherry this wine would be a stunning match for some wild salmon.

If Dad is a Whiskey drinker, we have him covered there too. Check out our Single Malt Scotch and Small Batch American Whiskey links on our Home Page for Dad's favorites in Scotch, Bourbon and Rye.

Discover The Wines of Domaine Eden

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

South of San Francisco in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains we find the home of Domaine Eden. Purchased in 2007 the vineyards of Domaine Eden were founded and built by the late Tom Mudd in 1983 when it was the former Cinnabar Winery, but now under the Domaine Eden label this winery has a major focus on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Heading to the Saratoga Foothills in Santa Cruz we find the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99). Domaine Eden's Chardonnay offers up wonderful flavors of smoke and dried pear with a hint of toasted nuts. Supple and polished on the palate, this wine is noted for its purity, freshness and rock-solid finish. Some exceptional food complements include the first herb-rubbed chicken of the summer paired with some grilled spring vegetables which will soon be appearing at the local farmers markets. Or perhaps some swordfish seared on the grill covered in a creamy butter/lemon sauce. But no matter what your food taste, the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) has much to offer.

2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

But if steak is on the menu, you may want to consider the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99). Expressing the true heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this wine is comprised of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) along with a little Merlot (15%) and the balance being Petit Verdot and Malbec. Fermentation is with native yeasts and after two years of aging in both French and American Oak, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. So grill up that perfectly marbled Rib-Eye and plop on a big dollop of herbed butter and pop open this wine.

Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon — Napa's Best Kept Secret

2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

As we put May behind us and head into June, the Summer season is right at our doorstep. While the temperatures beckon us to the backyard, why not throw on your favorite cut of steak and enjoy it with one of the gems of Napa Valley, the 2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99).

Rich and Leslie Frank found their way to Napa Valley separately, but ultimately their love of Napa Valley brought them together.

Enter the 2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) which is a blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) along with the remaining 10% being Cabernet Franc and Merlot. So for those of you who really enjoy the taste and flavors of a classic California Cabernet, our recommendation for this week is to give the 2016 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon ($44.99) a try.

You can find this wine right on our Home Page as it is one of our Cellar Specials for June.

Also, if you have missed this week's Wine Minute on our social media sites where we talk about Natural and Organic Wine, you can view it by clicking here; it's right under the Cellar Specials.

Summer Rosé - Pretty in Pink

2019 Aix Rose 2019 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rose 2019 Miraval Rose

The temperatures are rising and as the mercury goes up our minds wander to wines that will cool us down. Enter Rosé, whether it's classic Rosé from Provence or a New World Rosé from the states, it's always a harbinger of summertime and Francos Wine Merchants has your favorites in stock.

Provence produces that classic, crisp style we often think about when we speak of Rosé wines. The main grapes of the region are Cinsault, Grenache, and Mouvedre but certainly there are other grapes such as Ugni Blanc, Syrah, Clairette and Rolle. The variety and blend of these grapes is what makes Rosé wines so amiable a companion to such summer dishes as seafood, grilled chicken or even a simple salad topped grilled shrimp. Filled with seasonal fruit notes of strawberry and mango, the 2019 Aix Rosé ($19.99) is always a seasonal favorite. If you'd like a wine with fresh acidity and citrus nuance to it, then you may want to try the 2019 Minuty Cotes de Provence Rosé ($19.99). But if you are looking for a Rosé that boasts floral and melon aromas with a plump and fleshy style, then the 2019 Miraval Rosé ($24.99) is for you.

2019 Wölffer Estate Rose 2019 Wölffer Estate Rose Summer in a Bottle

Moving closer to home, right here from New York's Long Island are two excellent Rosés from Wölffer Estate Vineyards. The 2019 Wölffer Estate Rosé ($17.99) shows off a beautiful salmon colored hue in the glass while the floral and flinty aroma greets your nose. The smooth entry segues into the peach and apricot flavors which greet the palate while the classic dry finish rounds off this engaging Rosé. But if you are looking for a Rosé with a bit more body that shows off the season, look no further than the 2019 Wölffer Estate Rosé Summer in a Bottle ($25.99). This tight, crisp Rosé is a blend of primarily Merlot and Chardonnay with the balance being Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. This lively blend has a rich and elegant mouth-feel with layers of flavors and good minerality. Savory with a long finish, the classic chalk notes makes this the perfect wine alongside any of your salmon, shrimp and lobster dishes.

You can find all these wines on our Refreshing Summer Rosé link here or on our Home Page.

Muscadet & Sancerre — Break out the Lobsters!

2019 Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre

The Loire Valley has some great wine choices as the warmer weather finally descends upon us. Just in time for your Memorial Day Barbeque, Francos Wine Merchants has some new arrivals which are a perfect match for so many of your seafood favorites that may be on the menu this holiday weekend.

Let's start with a classic from the Loire, Sancerre, and with that we are happy to have back in inventory one of our favorites, the 2019 Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre ($25.99). The exotic fruit aromas of this wine makes for the perfect escape for your holiday weekend. The tropical nose of fruit and spice leads you right into the clean, fresh flavor which derives from the terroir of the clay and limestone soil in the vineyards. The well-balanced flavors simply beg for some fresh scallops or a meaty piece of swordfish grilled to perfection with a lemon-butter sauce. This is the way to kick off your summer.

2018 Luneau Papin Terre de Pierre Muscadet 2018 Luneau Papin "La Grange" Vielles Vignes Muscadet

But if lobsters or shellfish are the way you like to kick-off summer, then you have to look towards Loire Valley's second most well-known wine, Muscadet. This week we received from producer Luneau-Papin two of his Muscadets, the 2018 Luneau Papin Terre de Pierre Muscadet ($22.99) and the 2018 Luneau Papin "La Grange" Vielles Vignes Muscadet ($16.99). Both of these wines are organically produced and made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape. The 2018 Luneau Papin Terre de Pierre Muscadet ($22.99) has a fresh nose that offers up nuances of mint and fresh flowers. In the mouth, flavors of white fruit and grapefruit tantalize the palate while the bright, full-flavored taste leads you into a long and superb finish. The 2018 Luneau Papin "La Grange" Vielles Vignes Muscadet ($16.99) hails from the village of Le Landreau where the south facing slopes are bathed in sun. The 35 year old vines are grown using no pesticides and are hand-picked at harvest. Crisp and refreshing, this brightly flavored wine offers up lemon and other citrus fruit and while it works well on its own as an aperitif, it pairs perfectly with the briny flavors of both clams and oysters.

You can find all three of these wines on our New Arrivals link here or on our Home Page.

Tollot-Beaut Bourgogne — New Arrival from Burgundy

2017 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Bourgogne

Nothing beats the flavor of a delicious Red Burgundy and even better when it's at an attractive price. Unfortunately trying to hunt such a good value Burgundy down would give Orion a run for his money. But last week we had some luck from Domaine Tollot-Beaut with the 2017 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Bourgogne ($37.99).

The Tollot Family represents a long lineage of winegrowers when Francois Tollot began planting in the late 1880s in Chorey-les-Beaune. Jump to 1921 when his son Alexandre, continuing in his father's footsteps, married Aurélie Beaut and Domaine Tollot Beaut was born. Today, cousins Nathalie, Jean-Paul and Olivier Tollot are in charge and produce a range of appellations from a simple Bourgogne to a higher tier Grand Cru.

The 2017 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Bourgogne ($37.99) is an exceptional red Burgundy that shows a delicate profile on the nose with aromas of red flowers, cherries and sweet herbs. The appealingly fresh scent offers nuances of red berry and earth scents that leads into flavors of pleasant, brambly red fruit. On the palate the well balanced mouthfeel offers juicy cranberry and fresh raspberry with a dash of spice on the finish. Like many Red Burgundy, this wine can be quite flexible in food pairing. The medium alcohol, firm body, high acidity and low tannins make this wine in particular quite food friendly. One can go as fancy as a roasted game bird, but truth is, this wine will do just as well with a simple grilled duck breast or any dish where mushroom, black truffles or ingredients that are rich in umami take center stage. Add to this the attractive price of $37.99 and this wine will not last long in inventory, so place your orders online today.

As always, you can order any of the wines we suggest by clicking the wine link in our email.

Kistler Chardonnay for Mom

2018 Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay

Mother's Day is this weekend and while you may not be able to take mom out for her traditional Mother's Day meal, Francos Wine Merchants can certainly provide you with an excellent wine for the meal you are preparing.

Enter Kistler Vineyards where back in 1978 founders Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler followed their belief that California was able to grow Chardonnay of great character right in Sonoma, and they have spent the last 40 years doing just that.

The 2018 Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay ($59.99) is a study on its own of all Kistler's Sonoma Coast vineyards. It's a blend of five parcels of their land in Western Sonoma County including grapes from their famous Vine Hill Vineyard, Dutton Ranch and Trenton Roadhouse sites. Combine this with the small percent new oak used in crafting the Kistler Les Noisetiers and you have a wine that highlight the grapes' solid-driven character and the unique minerality rarely found in new world Chardonnay. With the 2018 Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay ($59.99), winemaker Jason Kesner has crafted a wine with a classic layered balance of juicy fruit and a mineral backbone. Aromas of white flowers and stone fruit lead you right into a full-bodied core loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear. The extremely long finish confirms that you are enjoying an absolute icon in American winemaking.

 Bohigas Cava Reserva

Also for Mother's Day, we did have one of our favorite Sparkling Wines return this week and it also may be a nice choice to add sparkle to mom's day, the Bohigas Cava Reserva ($14.99). Coming to you all the way from Catalonia Spain the Bohigas Cava Reserva is a blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada. The native limestone/clay soil lends this wine a crisp and elegant flavor that is zesty and dry.

If instead you want to transport mom to that tropical vacation she may have missed this winter, what better way to bring her to a relaxing day at the beach than with a delicious margarita made with one of our fabulous Tequilas selected from the Tequila link here or on our Home Page.

More Choices for Your Home Meals

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay 2017 The Arsonist Red Blend

Don't let dinners become humdrum while you are at home; there are always ways to spice up your meals and a tasty bottle of wine goes a long way in doing just that. Francos Wine Merchants will always be here with suggestions no matter what is on the menu.

We have been treated to a few nice days and if you have cleaned off the grill it certainly makes a nice escape from dirtying the kitchen. Maybe you saw some steaks at the market, or perhaps some delicious looking beef tips, or maybe you grabbed some sausage links and decided to grill them along with some peppers to help stretch the meal a little further. For any of those dishes we have a few choices for you. If you are looking for a wine with plenty of structure but a lighter mouthfeel, then take a trip to the Loire Valley by picking up a bottle of the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99). This wine is made from 100% Gamay and in a natural fashion and is soon to be certified organic. Winemaker Valérie Fougues harvests by hand, uses indigenous yeasts and bottles without fining or filtering. But perhaps you want a wine with a little more heft, if that is the case then look no further than the 2017 The Arsonist Red Blend ($19.99). A Bordeaux-style blend from California, The Arsonist is a bold blend of Petit Verdot (53%) with the balance being 28% Malbec and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Arsonist Red Blend is a dark ruby in the glass, with aromas of violets, blackberry and caramel intermingle with toasty oak and vanilla on the nose. Sweet wild berry fruit flavors on the entry moves to dryness as the wine progresses across the palate.

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

But perhaps you are in the mood to whip up some Grilled Asian Red Snapper or some Swordfish with a Ginger lime sauce, or maybe you even want to give everyone a break from cooking and support your local restaurants by ordering out some Sesame Chicken or Szechuan Shrimp. For any of those choices may we recommend the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99). This wine has a great flavor full of fresh fruit, and has pleasant hints of mineralization as well. Distinct tastes of green apple, as well as white pepper, and nuances of mango are all in balance to create a crisp finish, with a light spice to round out the palate. For those of you looking for white wine that is different, the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) is a great alternative.

What's on the Menu?

2018 Domaine Roger Neveu Sancerre Cote des Embouffants

Dinner has become a more creative effort lately. Since trips to the grocery store have basically gone down to once a week, we are often saddled with making dinner with what is at hand or maybe deciding to support our favorite local restaurant and do some takeout. However you are tackling dinner, Francos Wine Merchants has wines to make the meal more satisfying.

The fish market has been my salvation lately as you can easily grab something that is simple, such as Shrimp which has many options for preparation, or swordfish which is as tasty but more robust if you want to get more creative. Loire Valley white wines are always great pairings for most any fish and we are happy to have in stock the 2018 Domaine Roger Neveu Sancerre Cote des Embouffants ($23.99).

A classic Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, the vines for this Neveu Family wine are grown on an extremely steep southern facing slope. The limestone soil helps produce unctuous fruit with notes of zippy citrus in the bouquet. As a Kermit Lynch import, this wine is naturally produced which is evident when you not only see the beautiful, pale-gold hue, but you experience the fine aromatic expression of ripe fruit, white flowers and the long and elegant lingering on the palate rife with freshness, suppleness and minerality.

2017 Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

Some nights you need to stretch whatever ingredients you have at hand and pasta is always a good option, whether it's just a few mushrooms and some chicken, or perhaps a little more robust like some Italian Sausage. It could also be possible that you want to give the kitchen crew the night off and just order a few pizzas with your favorite toppings. Wines for your "At Home" meals

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay 2019 Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio

Currently we are all at home every night. Some nights we have made it to the supermarket and have everything at hand to follow a recipe, some nights it's whatever can be made with what is in the pantry, and some nights we are supporting our local restaurants and picking up take-out. However you are managing your meals there are always some good wine choices that can accompany them. Below are a few suggestions from Francos Wine Merchants that you may want to think about.

For White Wines, Francos is pleased to offer you the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99). Domaine Eden is a mountaintop wine estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains purchased by Mount Eden back in 2007. One of the stars of their lineup is the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99). Very Burgundian in style, this wine exhibits classic aromas and flavors of citrus fruit, anise, and fresh dill flower. Very open to a variety of foods, this California Chardonnay with its forward fruit flavor is a perfect match if you wanted to make a simple roast chicken to brighten up your mid-week meals.

If you have stopped by the fish market, or maybe you are keeping some frozen shrimp in your freezer to throw together a quick seafood stir-fry or perhaps a shrimp risotto, the 2019 Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio ($14.99) would be a terrific wine with which to pair. The straw yellow color shows off vibrant green hues. The floral bouquet is enticing, and is followed by a subtle undertone of spiciness. The palate not only offers a nice medium weight, but the fresh, crisp finish is what brings you back for another glass.

2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018 Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone

If you are venturing out to the grill, Francos has two red wine offerings which are perfect with everything from a delicious Rib Eye steak to a simple burger with all the toppings. The 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99) is exactly what you are looking for to accompany that steak on the grill. Made in a natural fashion with no chemical or pesticides, this scrumptious red wine if vibrant in both color and flavor with a fruit-driven and earthy flavor. If you are going to go simple and put some burgers on the grill, then look no further than the 2018 Kermit Lynch Côtes du Rhône ($13.99). A hearty wine full of classic Rhône characteristics, the deep, dark color with earth notes in the aromas paves the way into a wine that has mineral and spice nuances and leads into a developed and long/dry finish.

2015 La Valentina Montepulciano "Spelt" — Show Italy Some Love

2016 La Valentina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo "Spelt"

Italy brings us so much in this world, astounding art, fantastic food, and of course wonderful wines. The country has had a rough couple of weeks but what better time to remind us of what a dull world it would be without their fabulous wines, and we have one we highly recommend.

La Valentina was founded in 1990 on the hills overlooking Spoltore in the Pescara province in Abruzzo in Central Italy. Owners and brothers Sabatino, Roberto and Andrea Di Properzio along with winemaker Luca D'Attoma have been dedicated to becoming a leading example of the modern renaissance of winemaking in Abruzzo. In all their vineyards, the Di Properzios have made a strong commitment to sustainability avoiding the use of artificial or chemical products, ensuring maximum biodiversity and relying on minimal intervention in the land's natural process. To this end, all the estate vineards have been certified organic since 2016.

Enter the 2016 La Valentina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo "Spelt" ($21.99). Here in this vineyard location at an elevation of 150-350 meters, the vines — with an average age of 10-42 years — thrive in the medium clay soil known throughout the region. The wine represents a fuller-bodied version of this traditional wine for which this D'Abruzzo is known. It is made with the first selection of Montepulciano grapes from the vineayrds and is aged in wood. The result of all this is a wine that is more robust and complex in style. Made from 100% Montepulciano grapes, this wine shows off a bright ruby color, with clean aromas of red berries and herbs. On the palate, the balsamic/peppery nuances tempt the taste buds into wanting more and thus uncovering a hint of flint on the taste as well. All this eases into a finish that is long and pure and makes you realize what a truly lovely wine you are tasting. While it is very food friendly, you can always serve this wine with dishes traditional to Abruzzo such as Pallotte cacao e uova or Pasta alla pecorara.

As always, you can order any of our wines by clicking the wine link in our email.

2017 Petalos del Bierzo - Discover Northern Spain

While many wine lovers are familiar with Spain's more common wine regions such as Rioja, Navarre and Rueda, for the adventurous there is more to the wine landscape of Spain for those who are willing to travel a bit to the north.

2018 Petalos del Bierzo

Please join us Saturday February 29th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Petalos del Bierzo ($19.99) from Proprietors and Winemakers Alvaro Palacios and Ricardo Perez.

During the late 1980's Alvaro Palacios travelled his native Spain making a living selling French barriques to winemakers. But his journey had another purpose, to search out the best place to achieve a lifelong goal of becoming a great winemaker himself. Alvaro was soon joined by his nephew Ricardo Perez who had just finished his enological studies in Bordeaux as well as spending time travelling across France absorbing everything he could about grapes, terroir and winemaking. Their search soon lead them to a little town on Bierzo's western border named Corullon. This location had everything Alvaro wanted in a vineyard site - incredibly steep hillsides, distinctive terroirs and most important, an ancient vineyard of Mencia. Mencia is a unique red grape believed brought by French pilgrims to this area during the Middle Ages.

All this brings us to the 2018 Petalos del Bierzo ($19.99), hailing from the steep slopes of the Corullon. This incredible wine from Alvaro and his nephew Ricardo is made from an indigenous and ancient Spanish grape called Mencia. The cool northwest corner of Spain is particularly attractive to this grape along with its soil of a rocky mix, volcanic minerals and Atlantic influences. These hard to reach vineyards are worked by hand and the estate employs certified biodynamic viticulture methods. All this produces a wine that is replete with blackberry and violet aromas and a great herbal freshness. Positively dry on the palate with a touch of spice, this wine enjoys a long and crisp mineral finish which makes it very food-flexible and will pair with many menus.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So take a trip to Spain and please join us Saturday February 29th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Petalos del Bierzo ($19.99).

Jordan Cabernet & Chardonnay - Cross the River and Come for a Taste

What better way to energize a dull Saturday than a Wine Tasting with wines from one of California's signature vineyards. Francos Wine Merchants will have two wines from Jordan Vineyard & Winery open this weekend and we hope you will stop by for a pour.

Please join us Saturday February 22nd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Jordan Chardonnay ($31.99) and the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99).

In 1972 founders Tom and Sally Jordan set out to create wines that were approachable when young, but that would also age gracefully. Located in Sonoma's Alexander Valley, the Jordans set a standard for American wine quality that still holds true today. Now under the guidance of their son John, it is the Jordans' dedication that makes this vineyard one of the best in Sonoma.

2017 Jordan Chardonnay 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon

Let's start out with their signature white, the 2017 Jordan Chardonnay ($31.99). Showing off nuances of stone fruit and a vibrant acidity, this wine is the result of a blend of different vineyard blocks on the east side of the Russian River in Sonoma County. The exposed gravel deposits are what give this wine its elegance, a bright minerality and a lush lingering finish. It is this combination of Russian River Valley grapes, French oak aging and old-world winemaking techniques that helps create a Chardonnay that is harmoniously balanced to pair with a wide range of foods.

Moving over to Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, we find the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99). This wine is crafted with the focus remaining on striking the perfect balance between bold fruit, silky tannins and lingering finish. The cooler climate of the 2015 vintage added to the soft, silky style for which this wine is known. The vintage exudes a great fruit character and fine structure that the aging in French oak supports and elevates. This finely crafted Cabernet Sauvignon hits all the right notes. The 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) certainly lends itself to a classic pairing of a New York Strip, but its elegance also lets your mind wander to such dishes as herb-crusted lamb, wild mushroom risotto or duck confit.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday February 22nd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Jordan Chardonnay ($31.99) and the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) and come see why Jordan Vineyard & Winery maintains a relentless quest to improve with every vintage.

Rural Italy & France - Two Fabulous Wines for $11.99

President's Day weekend is ahead and for those of you who aren't able to get away for the weekend Francos Wine Merchants invites you to a quick trip to Italy and Southern France.

Please join us Saturday February 15th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2018 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno ($11.99) and the 2018 Château d'Oupia ($11.99).

2018 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno 2018 Chateau d'Oupia

First let's travel to the Marche in eastern Italy, located between the Apenne Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Here in the southern-most part we find the 2018 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno ($11.99). This wine is a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese with an emphasis on Montepulciano. Gianfranco & Carlo Garofoli named this wine after a beautiful mountain pass in Monti Sibillini National Park. This blend of 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese is aged in stainless steel tanks producing a bright, lively wine meant to be consumed in its youth. This wine shows a poignant fruit bouquet of good intensity. Notes of ripe plum along with delicate tannins produce a gentle structure in this wine that is remarkably easy to drink. This wine is a perfect pairing for Spaghetti coi Moscioli, a traditional dish from the region, or can also be enjoyed with any simple red sauce pasta dish or a delicious Pizza Margarita.

From there let's travel to Southern France to the region of Minervois. Once in Minervois if you journey to Oupoia, a small commune in the Minervois, where the Iché family follows its founder André's legacy of being an ardent disciple of natural wines. Here we find the 2018 Château d'Oupia ($11.99), another homerun by this famous family. This red wine is a blend of 50% Carignan, 40% Syrah, and 10% Grenache from 50+ year old vines. 2018 Château d'Oupia ($11.99) offers an earthy bouquet of cedar notes and an elegantly balanced palate flush with dark fruit that leads to an exceptionally long finish. This is the ideal wine to serve alongside grilled or roast game and other red meat dishes.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday February 15th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2018 Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno ($11.99) and the 2018 Château d'Oupia ($11.99).

Oregon vs. California — the Pinot Noir Debate Continues

Pinot Noir has two distinct camps, those from California and those from Oregon. Two unmistakable wines each with their own style traits. What better way to decide which one suits your palate than at our Weekly Wine Tasting where we will have two such Pinot Noirs open.

Please join us Saturday February 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) and the 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99).

2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir

Our wine tasting journey starts out in Oregon's Willamette Valley, home to Sokol Blosser Winery. This famed winery was founded in 1970 by Bill Blosser and Susan Sokol Blosser in the heart of the Willamette Valley on what had previously been old orchard. Delving head first into their passion for Pinot Noir they produced their first vintage in 1977. The 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) is one of their star efforts. This wine is a very ripe and fruit driven wine made from 100% Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that is very approachable and ready to drink. On the nose, hints of chocolate covered cherries blend with rose petals, as well as a little spice. On the palate you will taste bright flavors of red and jammy fruits, sweet cherry, and just a hint of toasty oak. Juicy and fruit-driven with a sophisticated silk, the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) has rich and round mouthfeel followed by soft tannins and a long and satisfying finish.

2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

From the heart of Oregon we now travel down to California to the far coast of Mendocino where we find the 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99). Twenty years ago Jason and Molly Drew started out with one clear goal in mind, to craft a pinot noir that highlighted the traditional character of the varietal. In 2004 they purchased a 26 acre apple orchard that was for sale in the Mendocino Ridge Appellation. While others saw a daunting task ahead them, Jason and Molly Drew only saw ancient oceanic soil, south facing slopes and a true coastal climate a mere 3 miles from the ocean. They planted their pinot noir vines and 10 years later they produced their first crop from this property. The 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) is known for the low yields and intense concentration. With their long standing tradition of sustainable farming practices they remain focused on traditional methods that include whole cluster and native yeast fermentation, hand punchdowns, and in most cases no fining or filtering. The grapes grown at this site are smaller in size with thick skins which help produce flavors with deep tones and a mouthwatering aftertaste. You first notice the rich color of this wine which is followed by the intense nose of black cherry, heirloom plum and the classic forest floor base you find in European pinot noir. Once in the mouth you are treated to flavors of pomegranate along with a hint of persimmon which leads into a balance and long mineral finish.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday February 8th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) and the 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) and you can decide if you prefer a Pinot Noir from California, Oregon, or both.

Duckhorn - Cade - Dunn - Battle of the Napa Valley Cabernets

Super Bowl Weekend is here and there will be many battle lines: football teams, chili recipes, wing recipes, etc... so why not wine? Join us for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pair off three fantastic Napa Valley Cabernets.

Please join us Saturday February 1st 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.99) the 2016 Cade Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($108.99) and the 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($149.99).

2016 Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Cade Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Our battle for the title begins back in 1976 when Dan and Margaret Duckhorn established Duckhorn Vineyards, starting off with a modest inaugural vintage of their wines thus starting a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today. They now offer the 2016 Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.99) as the current Cabernet in their star line-up of wines. Embodying a classic expression of Napa Valley style, this vintage of Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon does not disappoint. The bouquet first greets you with nuances of blackberry, huckleberry and black currants. On the palate the bright, juicy flavor shows off luxurious cassis and dark berry flavors with notes of fig, cardamom, clove and black pepper. The firm core of this wine is supported by dusty tannins that frame all the flavors contained within this wine and leads you right into a well-structured finish. While drinking excellent now, you can carry this wine all the way down the field to the goal line.

Staying in Napa but headed to its famed Howell Mountain, we come to the 2016 Cade Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($108.99). This stunning wine shows off its dark, ruby color that is followed by aromas of bright red berries and nuances of rose petals, mint and anise. Full-bodied, with a firm core when in the mouth, you will experience vibrant notes of crushed blackcurrants, cherries and dark chocolate along with a touch of spice such as cloves. The rock-solid frame, grainy tannins and seamless freshness leads into a finish of layer after layer of black fruit. Definitely a wine you want to open to cheer on your favorite Ribeye.

2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Remaining on Howell Mountain, we come to Dunn Vineyards, home to the 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($149.99). Since 1979, Randy and Lori Dunn have owned and operated Dunn Vineyards and continue to produce one of the most highly acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignons from Howell Mountain and the Napa Valley. The 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet is their signature wine and contains only fruit farmed by them from the vineyards on Howell Mountain. From the moment you pour this famed wine into your glass the black/purple color and dark, brooding bouquet tells you that this effort by the Dunns is one produced from relatively low yields. On the palate, the big, fat and juicy mouthfeel overtakes your taste buds. Flavors of crème de cassis, blackberry and licorice are all present in this multilayered wine. This wine is perfect to quarterback any dinner party.

CrossBarn Pinot Noir — The Other Side of Paul Hobbs

Paul Hobbs Winery was founded in 1991 and it was not long before Paul Hobbs became regarded for his innovative work as a winemaker. For almost thirty years he has continued to be a leading consultant winemaker around the globe working innovatively with new and historic sites and regions. One of his ventures is his CrossBarn label which we will be pouring this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

2018 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma

Please join us Saturday January 25th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample the 2018 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99).

Looking to expand, Paul Hobbs ventured beyond his estate properties but wanted to remain true to his ideals of sustainable vineyard practices and gentle winemaking techniques to create wines of exceptional quality. Taking the name of his 150 acre family farm back in upstate New York, CrossBarn became the name of his new label of wines from Sonoma California. CrossBarn began as one small lot in 2000 and one varietal, but due to its successful popularity the label grew to several varietals including Pinot Noir.

The 2018 Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma ($29.99) shows off its bright ruby-purple color as your pour it into the glass. Soon you are greeted with inviting scents of pomegranate, crushed raspberries and Bing cherries. In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied with bright acidity, firm tannins and a fresh, chewy finish. Forgues Gamay & Tascante Ghiaia Nera - A Quick Trip to Loire & Sicily

Expand your wine horizons without the passport by taking a quick trip to Loire & Sicily at our Weekly Wine Tasting. Francos Wine Merchants will have two terrific red wines that can easily pair with a casual weeknight meal or a comfortable Saturday night dinner party.

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera

Please join us Saturday January 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) and the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

We start off in the Loire Valley in the region of Touraine where we find the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99). Despite no viticultural or winemaking experience, Valérie Forgues found herself with a 16 hectare estate and need to figure out how to run it. After several twists and turns she followed some advice from her brother-in-law and two neighboring vintners she found herself on the right path. The wine presented here is 100% Gamay from vines averaging 20 years of age and grow in the clay-limestone soil for which the region is known. Working organically (and soon to be certified) she has produced a gamay that has a fresh, mixed berry nose followed by a pure, fruit flavored palate with a nice touch of acidity. When you decide to make an easy dinner of your favorite beef stew, this wine would make great company.

From the Loire, we travel to Italy to the island of Sicily. Mount Etna, which dominates most of the east coast of the island, is where we find the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99). Here in the volcanic soil in the Piano district of Catania the vines of the Nerello Mascalese grape thrive in the hot Sicilian sun. It is these warm days that gives this wines its fresh and ripe flavor and showcases the true personality of this native grape of Sicily. Upon pouring this wine you are greeted with its vibrant cherry red color. Once in the mouth you are treated to a bright, fresh taste and the soft tannins characteristic of this grape variety. It is the easy drinkability of this wine which makes it fine on its own, but also makes it very food friendly and perfect for any traditional southern Italian dish from a basic ragu to a delicious Pasta alla Norma.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday January 18th 1:00-5:00pm as we pour both the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) and the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

From, Spain we travel over to southern France to the Languedoc where we find the home of the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99). A product of the Iché family which was founded by André Iché, who remained at the helm until his death in 2007. Carried on by his children, André's legacy is being an ardent disciple of natural wines. André personified the region and was a leader in elevating it from a producer of bulk wines to a region of wines reflective of its ancient vines and wonderful terroir. Les Hérétiques is 100% Carignan grape and a thoughtful choice for those looking to expand their palate. It has a very floral personality and works perfectly many of your comfort food recipes that dominate winter menus. The holiday week leading up to New Year's Eve always seems to go by quickly, and you don't want to be caught short. If you still are in need of Champagne for your celebration then look no further than Francos Wine Merchants.

2012 Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee

If you want to celebrate in style, then 2012 Louis Roederer Cristal ($249.99) is how to do it. The 2008 is said to be their finest vintage since the much touted 2002, which is why they did not rush and aged it ten years before its release. Complex and intense, this wine shows off a bouquet of candied citrus, yellow fruit, pear and a hint of toasted almond. The 2008 is undeniably well structured yet the smooth entry gives way to underpinned freshness and a soft, velvety texture. Without a doubt, the Pol Roger Reserve Brut Champagne ($48.99) has been our biggest seller of the season. The beautiful straw gold hue sparkles in the fine bubbles of this terrific Champagne. The attractive nose of pear and mango lead into the light flavors of honeysuckle and white jasmine. Once in the mouth the bolder flavors of vanilla and brioche enter in a seamless harmony along with a pleasant freshness all while preserving the structure of this fine wine.

You can see your complete selection by clicking on the Champagne link on our Home Page as well as our Prosecco & Other Sparkling Wine link to view our other sparkling selections.

2016 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

We also have some fabulous white wines on tap that we will be tasting which include the 2016 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc ($51.99). This outstanding white Bordeaux is a blend of 20% Semillon and 80% Sauvignon Blanc which not only greets you with an intoxicating citrus fruit bouquet but the palate leads you to a lively thread of crisp acidity. If there is any fish on your menu for the holiday, this wine would make an excellent pairing. Also on tap to be poured is the 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99) — a classic pour from the Fevre portfolio. This wine with its flavors of wet stone and green apples is the perfect wine to keep chilled for when guests stop by unexpectedly.

2016 Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2016 Clemens Busch Vom Roten Schiefer Riesling

There are a lot of wines here folks, but I want to make sure to hit the highlights of the tasting first. Starting off in in California, it does not get much better than the 2016 Cade Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($108.99). This stunning wine shows off its dark, ruby color that is followed by aromas of bright red berries and nuances of rose petals, mint and anise. Showing provocative notes of black current and dark cherry, this wine offers up flavors of blueberry along with velvet tannins, depth and concentration all leading into a long weighted finish. One taste and you will see why this is the flagship wine of Domaine Serene. From there we go to Italy, and enjoy the 2016 Vietti Barolo Castiglione ($55.99). The soft introductory elegance of this wine leads you right into a palate that has the depth and density that you expect from this northern Italian gem. Another wine that absolutely deserves to be highlighted is the 2016 Clemens Busch Vom Roten Schiefer Riesling ($31.99). Here in the Clemens Busch vineyards, the red slate soil so prized by the vintners works its magic by bringing you a wine with expansive flavor, perfumed nose and subtle, rounded edges. If you are looking for a perfect food wine, it does not get much better than this.

2015 Ramey Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Flowers for the Table — Come Taste the Wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery

2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

While Thanksgiving seems to be far off, in all likelihood it will creep up fast on us, so it's never too early to start thinking about wine you will want to serve. In the coming weeks, Francos Wine Merchants will be offering a variety of wines to consider for your Thanksgiving dinner and this week we have two excellent suggestions from California's Sonoma Coast.

Please join us this Saturday November 16th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we pour two terrific wines from Flowers Vineyard & Winery with host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery you have to travel back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

The first wine Alex will be showing will be the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99). They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. Using only organic and sustainable farming practices, the wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific ocean. While the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) is a year round favorite to pair with many meals, it takes stage front and center when it comes to people looking for the perfect Chardonnay to pair with their Thanksgiving turkey.

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

For those of you who prefer a red wine with your Thanksgiving meal, many turn to Pinot Noir and there are few better choices than the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99).

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday November 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we welcome host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum & Sons as he pours these two terrific wines from Flowers Vineyard & Winery. Alex is one of our favorite Wine Representatives and has promised to bring a couple of other surprises from the Flowers Portfolio, so don't miss this fabulous Tasting!

An Incredible Tasting featuring Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet

2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Fall sees the release of many extraordinary wines and one arrived at our doorstep earlier this month which we will be pouring this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us Saturday October 19th 1:00-5:00PM as our host, Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum and Sons pours the 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($149.99).

Since 1979, Randy and Lori Dunn have owned and operated Dunn Vineyards and continue to produce one of the most highly acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignons from Howell Mountain and the Napa Valley. The 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($149.99), their signature wine, contains only fruit farmed by them from the vineyards on Howell Mountain.

From the moment you pour the 2015 Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($149.99) into your glass the black/purple color and dark, brooding bouquet tells you that this effort by the Dunns is one produced from relatively low yields. On the palate, the big, fat and juicy mouthfeel overtakes your taste buds. Flavors of crème de cassis, blackberry and licorice are all present in this multilayered wine. While the vineyard is not run by Randy and Lori's son Mike, you will notice that the wine is slightly riper than how his Dad crafted. Garnering an impressive 95 rating from Robert Parker this wine, while superb now, will drink well for the next 30 to 40 years. Do not miss the opportunity to taste this fabulous wine.

2016 Chanin Los Alamos Chardonnay

Alex will also have something for you Chardonnay lovers. If you travel a bit south to Santa Barbara, Alex will show you the 2016 Chanin Los Alamos Chardonnay ($36.99). After working at vineyards from California to South Africa to New Zealand, Gavin Chanin launched Chanin Wine Co. in 2007. The 2016 Chanin Los Alamos Chardonnay ($36.99) enjoys the sunlight from high elevations (900ft) to the cool marine influence of the Pacific. This yields a Chardonnay that shows off nuances of apricot and peach while offering buttery notes, smoke and chamomile in the mouth. If you are looking for wine to go with a roasted bird of any type, look no further.

2016 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir

We also convinced Alex to take a quick detour up to Oregon and pour the 2016 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir ($74.99). All you need is one taste of this wine and you will see why it is the flagship wine of Domaine Serene. This wine immediately draws you in with enticing notes of black current and dark cherry followed by velvet tannins. The structure, depth and concentration make it the perfect wine to consider for the upcoming holiday season.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday October 19th 1:00-5:00PM as our host Mr. Alex Meier-Tomkins, Fine Wine Manager of Slocum and Sons pours these fabulous wines.

Touring Old World Italy

2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Now that we have definitely settled into October, lets flip the page and start adjusting our wines and menus. What better way to do so than to visit Southern Italy and some wines that have some Old World Italian charm.

Please join us Saturday October 12th 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting as we as we sample the 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

Starting off in Apulia, Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain. Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Apulia.

From this historic property, the Falvo family brings you the 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). Verdeca is an ancient Apulian grape variety that is indigenous to Apulia. This wine has a terrific bright yellow color with subtle green shades that is intense fruity on the nose, with scent of tropical fruit, citrus, pear and fresh spices. On the palate you will find it to be a full, well balanced wine with a good acidity. The fruity, mineral and mildly spicy aftertaste would be perfect if you were whipping up a dish of Pasta al Limone, Cacio e Pepe or classic Pasta Carbonara recipe.

2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera

From Apulia we travel across Southern Italy to the island of Sicily. The highest peak in Sicily is Mount Etna, an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily. It is on the northern side of this mountain that we find the vineyards that produce the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99). Surrounded by olive, chestnut and oak trees, this biodiverse ecosystem plays a big role in the personality of this wine. Enter the Nerello Mascalese grape grown in the volcanic soil in the Piano district of Catania. The grapes grown here flourish and ripen in the hot Sicilian summer before being picked in mid to late October. It is these warm days that gives this wine its fresh and ripe flavor and showcases the true personality of this native grape of Sicily. Upon pouring this wine you will first notice its cherry red color in the glass and in the mouth you are treated to a bright, fresh taste and soft tannins. It is the easy drinkability of this wine which makes it fine on its own, but also makes it very food friendly. Our suggestion would be to dig out a traditional Sicilian recipe of Pasta alla Norma, Braciole di Manzo or a basic Ragu and you will instantly transported to Italy's most famous island.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday October 12th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

Fongoli for Fall

2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso

Now that summer has had its last gasp and the humidity is over, it should be safe to start looking towards our heavier reds as the nights get cooler. Francos Wine Merchants will have a one from the Fongoli Estate open this weekend and we hope that you will take a look.

Please join us Saturday October 5th 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting as we as we sample the 2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99).

The Fongoli Estate is located in Umbria amid the rolling hills of Montefalco in central Italy just north of Rome. The idyllic property comprises of 40 hectares of land sporting olive groves, oak trees, and 26 hectares of vineyards. At the center of the property sits the family home, a traditional Umbrian farmhouse, that stands adjacent to a newly renovated cellar. The Fongoli family has dedicated over 80 years to winemaking, and as such, grape cultivation and winemaking have become a passion, passed down through three generations to the vineyard's current owners, the brother and sister team of Angelo and Simona Fongoli. The 2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99) is estate-produced and bottled in accordance with the traditional winemaking methods of Montefalco that were employed almost a century ago. The wines are produced with respect and attention to environmental sustainability; all grapes are hand harvested, and the wines are aged in large Slovenian oak barrels for 5 to 40 years. The 2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99) is full of flavors coming from its unique blend: 60% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot and 10% Montepulciano. Carrying a bit more bite to it, this wine has a spicy yet fruity taste in the mouth which opens up beautifully in the glass and will really flourish with some decanting. While this wine is very adaptable to many foods, its true culinary home would be a pairing with some traditional Umbrian dishes such as pork with juniper berries or rack of lamb with saffron.

2018 Les Heretiques 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us Saturday October 5th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99). We will also be pouring two other wines that will be perfect for your Fall menu: the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99) and the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99), two wines we have tasted in the recent past but definitely worth a revisit.

East of Eden — The Wine of Domaine Eden

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

South of San Francisco in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains we find the home of Domaine Eden. Purchased in 2007 the vineyards of Domaine Eden were founded and built by the late Tom Mudd in 1983 when it was the former Cinnabar Winery, but now under the Domaine Eden label this winery focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Please join us Saturday September 21st 1:00-5:00PM at our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99), the 2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($39.99) and the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99).

Some exceptional complements include the first roast chicken of the fall paired with the many root vegetables which will soon be appearing at the local farmers markets. Or if you are a little more daring at the stove, some veal chops with sautéed mushrooms and late summer vegetables would be off the charts in terms of a perfect pairing. But no matter what your food taste the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99) has much to offer.

2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

Switching gears to their red wine, we are presented with the 2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($39.99). This wine greets you with aromas of mint and sweet red cherries and shows off a beautiful ruby red color in the glass. The flavors of black currants, spices, and dried herbs are all balanced out with a rich, textured feel on the tongue and a smooth finish. This intriguing wine profile pairs wonderfully with such elegant menus as roast duck in plum sauce, seared chicken with morels and tarragon cream sauce, or even a more simple garlic infused pork roast.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 21st 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay ($27.99), the 2016 Domaine Eden Pinot Noir ($39.99) and the 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon ($42.99).

Chateau Fouquet & Les Hérétiques — Country Reds of France

2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet

As September moves on the food blogs and fall issues of culinary magazines will start featuring many of the comfort food recipes we put on the back burner for most of the summer. As these casual meals come into focus we will also be in need of some casual wines as well. Francos Wine Merchants will be pouring two such wines at our Weekly Wine Tasting this weekend.

Please join us Saturday September 14th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99) and the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99).

Our first stop will be in the Loire Valley where we find the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99). Domaine Filliatreau presents a lovely example of Cabernet Franc from the heart of France's Loire Valley. Specifically this wine hails from the town of Saumur within the Anjou region of the valley; an area historically known for the Cabernet Franc grape. Rich earth, herbs, and vegetable notes dominate this wine, but not to the point of overwhelming the senses. While the earthy bouquet of the Chateau Fouquet is at the core of this wine, it retains a surprising medium body that goes down with remarkable smoothness. So while the cool nights enable you to enjoy the patio mosquito-free, why not pick up some simple Flat Iron Steaks, grill some late season vegetables, enjoy a quick trip to the Loire and introduce yourself to the Cabernet Franc grape.

2018 Les Heretiques

Traveling due south of the Loire toward the Languedoc we arrive in the region of Herault which is home to the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99). Winemaker André Iché was an ardent disciple of natural winemaking and while he passed in 2007 the Iché family has carried on his tradition. So for those of you looking for a wine made in the natural fashion you will find it in this bottle. Made from 100% Carignan grape, this wine is more versatile than you may think. This wine is medium-bodied with a strong tannic structure paired with aromas of raspberries and blueberries. So if you are thinking of enjoying a delicious grilled hamburger topped with the last of the seasonal tomatoes, this is the wine you want to be pouring.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday September 14th 1:00-5:00PM as we travel to the French countryside and taste the 2017 Domaine Filliatreau Chateau Fouquet ($18.99) and the 2018 Les Hérétiques ($9.99).

Evolution Pinot Noir & William Fevre Chablis — Land & Sea

2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Labor Day is here, and whether you are celebrating the holiday by the shore or in the back yard, Francos Wine Merchants has the wines you need no matter which destination you choose this weekend.

Please join us Saturday, August 31st 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99) and the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Chablis is a wine region with global renown, and Domaine William Fevre also shares the same notoriety among the world of Chablis. The 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99) are where the fabulous wines of William Fevre all start. This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. If you are thinking of lobster or shellfish for this Labor Day Weekend, the bright, crisp flavors of this wine would be a perfect match. This wine works because of the elegant bouquet and flinty flavors of wet stone along with the wine's beautifully clean finish which mesh perfectly with the briny quality of shellfish.

2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir

Moving over to Oregon we find the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99). This Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley is a very ripe and juicy fruit-driven wine and perfect if you are entertaining a crowd this weekend. This effort from Sokol Blosser was crafted to be an easy and very approachable wine that is ready to drink. On the nose, hints of chocolate covered cherries blend with rose petals, as well as a little spice. Surprisingly well structured with a sophisticated silk, the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) has rich and round mouthfeel followed by soft tannins and a long and satisfying finish. While there are many options for the holiday weekend, the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) would definitely be one to consider, especially if you are looking to satisfy a crowd.

2016 Valerie Forgues — Jammin' with Gamay

2016 Valerie Forgues Gamay

Francos Wine Merchants will be visiting Touraine this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting. This little tasting trip to this Loire Valley region will introduce you to one of the most prized appellations in central France.

Please join us Saturday, August 24th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99).

Valerie Forgues originally purchased the estate with her then husband, but in 2008 she was on her own. Driven by a desire to make a success of her venture, as well as to remain in the only home her children had known, she forged on. With the help of her brother and a close neighbor she decided to make some changes, the biggest of which was moving to working organically. But with the help of her brother she mastered how to properly work the soils all the while managing her vines and her yields. The result is an organically produced wine that is delicious and well balanced.

Organically grown and hand-harvested, the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) first greets you with flavors of vibrant raspberry, strawberry and wildflowers. These flavors are all present on the palate along with a nice undertone of limestone acidity that comes directly from the soil on her estate. What is great about the gamay grape is that should the temperature start to rise, you can put a slight chill on this wine which makes it quite refreshing.

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

For those of you looking for white wine that is different, we are also going to be pouring the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) from Austria. This wine is a great alternative to the more common white wines people typically turn towards. It pairs especially well with recipes such as a Peanut-Crusted Tilapia or Grilled Asian Red Snapper. It also pairs especially well with foods that have a little spice or heat to them. So as you pick out some of the seasonal hot peppers at the farmers market this weekend, keep this wine in mind.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday August 24th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2016 Valérie Forgues Gamay ($19.99) and the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99).

An Afternoon in Italy

2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Francos Wine Merchants will be celebrating Italy this weekend at our Weekly Wine Tasting. This little tasting trip will bring you from the Alto Adige up north, right down to the heel of the boot in Apulia.

Please join us Saturday, August 17th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour two distinct wines from our Italian portfolio.

First we will start you off in Apulia, a truly breathtaking coastal region, where we find 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). Verdeca is an ancient Apulian grape variety that is indigenous to Apulia. This reels you in with its terrific bright yellow color and subtle green shade. Intense and fruity on the nose, this wine with its scent of tropical fruit, citrus, pear and fresh spices is the perfect wine if you are looking for a white wine with a little weight to it. On the palate you will find it to be a full, well balanced wine with a good acidity that makes it incredibly food friendly. The fruity, mineral and mildly spicy finish will be perfect if you are going to grill some meaty white fish like swordfish or halibut along with some freshly grilled tomatoes and other seasonal summer vegetables.

2019 St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir

From Apulia we travel all the way up north to the Alto Adige where we are greeted by winemaker Hans Terzer and his prized wine, the 2019 St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir ($16.99). High up in the hills of the Alto Adige in the region of Tyrol, there is a sweet spot that gets a beautiful southwestern exposure, and it is there where the pinot noir for this wine grows. With aromas reminiscent of wild blackberries and raspberries, this wine with its garnet-red color provides an elegant and fruit forward wine. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in wood, this wine will be perfect with the red meats that are going on the grill this weekend, such as a perfectly cooked flank steak, skirt steak, and even a simple freshly ground burger with a juicy summertime tomato.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday August 17th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2019 St. Michael Eppan Pinot Noir ($16.99).

It's an Endless Summer with Wölffer Estate

2019 Wölffer Estate Rose

While we can now count the number of Summer Weekends that are left on one hand, you can still make it last with the wines from Wölffer Estate. While this famed Long Island vineyard produces several wines, they are most known for their Rosé wines both of which we will have open at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

Please join us this Saturday, August 10th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2019 Wölffer Estate Rosé ($17.99) and the 2019 Wölffer Estate Rosé Summer in a Bottle ($25.99).

For those of you unfamiliar with Wölffer Estate, it was founded in 1988 By Christian Wölffer and today is operated by his children Marc and Joey Wölffer and winemaker Roman Roth. The estate spans some 470 acres including the acclaimed 55 acre sustainably farmed estate vineyard located in Sagaponack, NY. The rest of their properties include another 52 acres on the North Fork of Long Island, 200 acres in Mendoza, Argentina, and 2.5 acres in Mallorca Spain. They also manage 160 acres in collaboration with North Fork growers. Their Rosés come from their Long Island vineyards, each wine with its own personality.

We will start off with the 2019 Wölffer Estate Rosé ($17.99) whose characteristics are the bright pink color and an elegance that is truly delightful. On the nose, aromas of fresh pear and apples are strong and enticing leading to a palate that has a clean, yet vibrant minerality from beginning to end. Made from 52% Merlot, 20% Chardonnay, 13% Cabernet Franc, 2% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Riesling, and 1% Pinot Noir, this wine tastes of ripe fruit, crisp acidity, and a nice, dry finish.

2019 Wölffer Estate Rose Summer in a Bottle

Next up from this winery is the 2019 Wölffer Estate Rosé Summer in a Bottle ($25.99). This wine is noted by the slight increase in lush and elegance throughout the drinking process. It is made from a blend of 48% Merlot, 41% Chardonnay, 6% Gewurztraminer, 3% Riesling, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Similar to its brother, this wine has a refreshingly bright flavor of fresh fruit but one immediately notices it carries a bit more weight and fullness. Both of these wines long to be enjoyed with any light meal off the grill whether it is chicken or fish.

Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner — The Influence of Austria

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

Summer is full of great recipes that make use of the hot peppers that pop up at the local farmers market or even your own garden. Often, many of them are grilled fish recipes with an Asian bent to them. These recipes require a wine that tempers the slight bit of heat yet brings out the flavors of your food — enter the Grüner Veltliner grape.

The country of Austria conjures up visions of Vienna and Salzburg and of course the hills made famous in song. But these hills are also home to some incredible vineyards and the wine most associated with Austria is made from the grape called Grüner Veltliner and we will be pouring one at our Weekly Wine Tasting Saturday, August 3rd 1:00-5:00PM.

If you happen to be familiar with this beautiful European country, you may know the most famous region is the Wachau which produces distinct wines that are crisp and dry. The Wachau is home to the renowned 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99). This wine pairs especially well with recipes that may have a little spice or heat to them. For those of you who are beckoned to the grill on these summer nights, this wine would be a great choice for recipes such as Grilled Asian Red Snapper or maybe a Ginger Lime Sauce that could be served over Swordfish or Sea Bass.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday August 3rd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) and see for yourself how fabulous this wine would be at your summer dinner table.

Small is Big with Jean-Paul Brun

2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

With the local Farmers Markets in full swing it's a reminder of how good products that are from a small producer can surpass anything that is grown for the masses. There is no comparison to a tomato that is grown on a small farm and hand-picked at the peak of ripeness to one that is not. This brings us to producer Jean-Paul Brun.

The wines of Jean-Paul Brun hail from a 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon where you will find winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties in a very "hands on" process where he creates some of the most fabulous wines in the region. Jean-Paul Brun is a master craftsman who focuses on making classically styled wines in a natural fashion with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and also no additives applied in the winery. All this effort brings forth a wine that is both the best of terroir as well as the varietal.

We will be pouring his 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday, July 27th 1:00 - 5:00PM.

While Jean-Paul Brun makes several wines, today we are going to focus on the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99). Back in 1989 Jean-Paul Brun was one of the few producers in the region to plant Pinot Noir and thus allowed him to release the wine under the Bourgogne appellation. The bright ruby-red clarity of the wine is evident the moment you pour the wine into the glass. The fresh and energetic nose entices you into that first sip which brings forth flavors of fresh raspberry and cherry flavors and a zesty mineral overtone. A spine of juicy acidity runs straight through the wine and lifts the fruit flavors through a long, seamless finish. Whether you are enjoying this bottle yourself or are having a small group over for some casual backyard entertaining, this is the wine you want if you are throwing a steak on the grill.

2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais 2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay

For those of you interested in the other Jean-Paul Brun wines that we have in stock, they would be the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99) and the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99).

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us this Saturday July 27th 1:00 - 5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99).

The Wines of Jean-Paul Brun — A Lesson in Natural Winemaking

2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay

Jean-Paul Brun is the unheralded Icon of Beaujolais. His 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon is where you will find him toiling away on his property under the domain name of "Terres Dorées." If you are unfamiliar with this region, the wines of Jean-Paul Brun are a great introduction. Long ago, Jean-Paul Brun realized the importance of working in a natural fashion, shunning the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, hand-harvesting his fruit, and using only indigenous yeast.

Please join us this Saturday, May 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour two of his wines.

First we will start off with the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99). Bright yellow with flavors of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, this Chardonnay offers flavors that come directly from the clay and limestone soil from which the vines grow. The ripe pear and apple flavors are followed by bright acidity and a clean taste that are obtained from their stainless steel aging. Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing with a Roast Chicken spiced with the first sprigs of spring tarragon that is currently popping up in the garden.

2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais

Next we move to the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99) which is made from 100% Gamay (a close cousin to Pinot Noir) offering a soft and elegant style. The average age of the vines used to make this outstanding wine range in age from 40 to 60 years old, hence the "Vieilles Vignes" designation. Naturally high sugar levels in the fruit due to late harvesting give this wine a deep color and a rich red-fruit aroma. This is a medium to full bodied red with a very flavorful, fresh taste and a long finish. You will recognize notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, and sweet red plum. The wine has enough structure to easily go with a full-flavored T-Bone or Rib-eye you are planning to christen the grill.

2018 The Chocolate Block

In addition to these two lovely wines from Jean-Paul Brun, we will also be tasting a South African red wine, the 2018 The Chocolate Block ($27.99). This wine from the Stellenbosch region of South Africa is made up of 64% Syrah grape, 14 % Grenache, 11% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and finally 1% Viognier. On the nose, it has a very a complex aroma of dark berries with a hint of white pepper while in the mouth flavors of dark, brooding fruit spring forward. For those of you who prefer a full-flavored red wine to go with your grilled steak, look no further.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join Saturday May 18th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99), the 2019 Jean Paul Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais ($16.99), and the 2018 The Chocolate Block ($27.99).

The Wines of Domaine de la Pépière — A Day in the Loire

2017 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

France's Loire Valley is home to many of the wines we seek out in the summer months including Muscadet. A discussion about the Loire would not be complete without speaking of the village of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre which houses the Domaine de la Pépière where winemaker Marc Ollivier has become a central figure in the Loire Valley winemaking world.

Please stop in this Saturday May 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste two of the wines from Domaine de la Pépière that have been created by master winemaker Marc Ollivier.

First a little background: Marc Ollivier has no formal winemaking lineage; all he knew is that he wanted to work outdoors and the wine trade was one of the options open to him. He went to Mâcon for a degree in viticulture and came back with a passion for winemaking. In 1984 his neighbor who was a vigneron died unexpectedly and he had the opportunity to buy his winery, which he did. At that time it was a 7 hectare estate which has now grown into a 28 hectare estate. His farming is all organic with all his fruit hand-picked and hand-harvested. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts, which makes his wines so sought after. La Pépière originates from the word "Pépie" aptly meaning "to be thirsty".

This now brings us to our first wine, the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99). This wine is made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape from vines 20 to 70 years in age from a gentle south-facing slope which allows the fruit to ripen to its fullest. The soil features a compressed form of granite as well as amphibolite rocks scattered throughout.

2015 Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine Clisson

Next we move to the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99). Also made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grape this is a beautifully charming and exceptionally delicate wine. The distinguishing feature on this special plot of land where the vines range from 50 to 110 years old is the soil type. This unusual soil is called granite de Clisson which is a particularly hard, compact granite with little clay and a lot of quartz. This helps produce a wine with an exceptional mineral quality that make it stand out from other Muscadets.

Both the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99) are wines that shine for your summer menus. When you pack up to head to the shore this summer and dream of dinners centered around seafood, most notably shellfish, these are the wines you want to have chilled and at hand.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us this Saturday May 11th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons ($18.99) and the 2015 Pépière Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson ($24.99).

Welcome Spring with 2017 William Fevre Chablis

2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux

Spring is moving along and we here on the East Coast have been treated to some classic spring days recently. Keeping the back door open in the evenings and enjoying the warmth as the sun sets is all a perfect time to reacquaint yourself with some wines that may have taken a back seat during the winter months. Once such wine is the 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday April 27th 1:00-5:00PM.

Chablis is a wine region with global renown, and Domaine William Fevre also shares the same notoriety among the world of Chablis. The 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99) is where the fabulous wines of William Fevre all start. This entry level Chablis from William Fevre is classically styled, delivering a fresh and supple nose with notes of mineral and green apple. The 2017 growing season was graced by beautiful weather in August and into September. This allowed the crop of the 2017 season to reach optimum maturity along with achieving perfect balance, great freshness and magnificent purity. So as the spring herbs such as chives and tarragon start to pop up in the garden, this wine would be a perfect match for herb-rubbed chicken either roasted or grilled. The bright flavors of this wine would mesh perfectly with the fresh clean flavors these herbs have to offer. The 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99) is also one to keep in mind as we progress into the warmer months as its elegant bouquet and flinty flavors of wet stone and a beautifully clean finish will pair well with any shellfish — especially one with a briny quality. The clean and crisp finish of this wine is just what you will be looking for as we creep into June and July.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join this Saturday April 27th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux ($31.99).

2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir — Evolve into Spring

2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir

Spring has been teasing us with a nice day here and there, but with the bounty of spring vegetables arriving at the store, the Spring Lamb in the meat case at the butcher and the perfect wine, you can give spring a little push in the right direction. One such wine is the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) which we will be pouring at our Weekly Wine Tasting this Saturday April 20th 1:00-5:00PM.

The Sokol Blosser Winery was founded in 1970 when wide-eyed young couple, Bill Blosser and Susan Sokol Blosser, found a beautiful old orchard around 30 miles southwest of Portland Oregon in the heart of the Willamette Valley and started the dream of owning a winery. Over the next several years this young couple not only made this region their home and started a family, but also delved head first into their passion for Pinot Noir with the goal to produce world class wines. By 1977 the Sokol Blosser Winery and vineyard was finally completed and they produced their first vintage.

The 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) is a very ripe and juicy fruit-driven wine made of 100% Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. This effort from Sokol Blosser was crafted to be an easy and very approachable wine that is ready to drink. On the nose, hints of chocolate covered cherries blend with rose petals, as well as a little spice. On the palate you will taste bright flavors of red and jammy fruits, sweet cherry, and just a hint of toasty oak. Juicy and fruit-driven with a sophisticated silk, the 2017 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir has rich and round mouthfeel followed by soft tannins and a long and satisfying finish. When perusing through your food magazines or recipe blogs and seeing the many spring lamb recipes, it is the pinot noir grape that should take center stage. While there are many options, the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) would definitely be one to consider, especially if you are looking to satisfy a crowd.

2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes"

Also this weekend we will be pouring the 2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($19.99). Jean-Paul Thévenet is the third generation to produce wine at his family estate in Morgon and his Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" is made from two parcels of vines, one 45 years old and the other 110 years old. Biodynamic and manually harvested, this wine which is made from 100% Gamay grape is harvested as late as possible in the season to achieve maximum ripeness. The result is a wine with a beautiful nose of cherry, pomegranates and slight floral nuance.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Saturday April 20th 1:00-5:00PM as we sample both the 2018 Sokol Blosser Evolution Pinot Noir ($17.99) and the 2017 Jean Paul Thevenet Morgon "Vieilles Vignes" ($19.99).

April Showers and a glass of Flowers

April has arrived and all it takes is a few degrees of warmth to change our mood. Warmer temperatures can also cause some horticultural madness in that we start to see the early spring flowers attracting our attention as we pass the nursery and gardening centers. While the tulips and daffodils are starting to bloom, Francos Wine Merchants has some blossoms of its own with the magnificent wines of Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Please join us Saturday April 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) and the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

For those of you unfamiliar with Flowers Vineyard & Winery, you have to go back to 1989 when Walt and Joan Flowers purchased 321 acres on California's Sonoma Coast. Up until then they had been nursery owners in Bucks County Pennsylvania, but decided to put their success in the nursery trade and their knowledge of plants and growing climates to work in the wine industry by founding Flowers Vineyard & Winery.

One of their prized wines is the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) which uses organic and sustainable farming practices. They carefully nurture this particular vineyard which enjoys the Pacific coast's bright sunny days, cool evening breezes and chilly evening fog — all of which ensures proper ripening, lively acidity and freshness of their fruit. The wine itself shows off a light straw hue along with expressive aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle. On the palate the aromas are heightened by well-balanced minerality and textural salinity very much influenced by the Pacific ocean. While the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) will pair nicely with a nice piece of halibut or swordfish, if you roast a chicken with the spring herbs of the season, you'd have a smashing pairing.

2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

From there we go to the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99). Also benefiting from the cool breezes and climate being on the coast of the Pacific, and from organic and sustainable farming, the Flowers Pinot Noir boasts a deep garnet color and aromas of cherry, spice and a pronounced flavor of red currants and cranberries all representing the best of what the vineyards of Sonoma Coast have to offer. Flowers Pinot Noir greets you with bright flavors of crushed fruit along with a gentle earthiness that carries through the core of this wine. Extending into a lengthy finish, you can easily visualize this Pinot Noir pairing with many of your spring menus such as baked ham, lamb and or course beef.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us Please join us Saturday April 6th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($41.99) and the 2018 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($44.99) at our Weekly Wine Tasting.

2015 Tascante Ghiaia Nera — An Afternoon in Sicily

2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera

Continuing on our tour of Italy this month, we bring you to the island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean just off the toe of Italy's boot. Sicily's temperature is moderated by the warm waters of the Mediterranean and mild temperatures that range from the high 40s in January to the high 80s in August. On this beautiful and wine-rich island there are multiple vineyards that have been around for many generations, each one rich with history and traditions. One of these great wine-producing families is the Tasca family, who has been producing wine at five different estates throughout Sicily for eight generations.

Please join us this Saturday, March 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we take a journey to the Tascante Estate, as we pour the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

It is these warm days that gives this wines its fresh and ripe flavor and showcases the true personality of this native grape of Sicily. Upon pouring this wine you will first notice its cherry red color in the glass and in the mouth you are treated to a bright, fresh taste and soft tannins. It is the easy drinkability of this wine which makes it fine on its own, but also makes it very food friendly. Our suggestion would be to dig out a traditional Sicilian recipe of Pasta alla Norma or Braciole di Manzo and you will instantly transported to Italy's most famous island.

Please join us Saturday, March 16th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the 2017 Tascante Ghiaia Nera ($19.99).

New Arrivals from Umbria & the Wachau Valley

2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel

While we wait for spring in this confusing month of March where one day is sunny and in the 50s and the next day is snowy and below freezing, at least there is the excitement of new wine arrivals. Francos Wine Merchants received three terrific new wines this week and we are excited to share them with you.

Please join us Saturday, March 9th 1:00-5:00PM for our Weekly Wine Tasting as we pour the following three wines.

If you're familiar with the beautiful European country of Austria you may know the most famous region is the Wachau which produces distinct wines that are crisp and dry. The Wachau is home to the renowned 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99). This wine has a great flavor full of fresh fruit, and has pleasant hints of mineralization as well. Distinct tastes of green apple, as well as white pepper, and nuances of mango are all in balance to create a crisp finish, with a light spice to round out the palate. For those of you looking for white wine that is different, the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99) is a great alternative to serve with various seafood dishes, or a variety of poultry menus. Although, if you are so inclined to dig out a traditional "weiner schnitzel" recipe that would be a classic match for this wine.

2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso

From Austria if we take a quick jaunt to central Italy we arrive in the region of Umbria where we find our next two wines from the Fongoli Estate.

The Fongoli Estate is in the center of the famous Umbrian wine country where the Fongoli Family has been producing wines for over 80 years. The property was first purchased by Decio Fongoli Calvani in 1927 and three generations later is currently owned by siblings Angelo and Simona Fongoli where they still practice organic farming methods on all their wines.

The first wine we will pour from this famous region is the 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99). This is a well-structured wine, with bright, ruby red color comprised of 60% Sangiovese grapes, and 40% Montepulciano grapes. The 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99) has a fruity taste that pairs delightfully with pasta dishes, especially traditional ones from the area such as Rigatoni All'Amatriciana.

2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso

The next wine from this famous property is the 2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99). A tad drier than its brother, this wine is full of flavors coming from the blend 60% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot and 10% Montepulciano. Carrying a bit more bite to it, this wine has a spicy yet fruity taste in the mouth which opens up beautifully in the glass and would flourish with some decanting. A great wine to have with cheeses, but its true culinary home would be a pairing with some traditional Umbrian dishes such as Pork with Juniper berries or Spring Rack of Lamb with Saffron.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on March 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Domane Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel ($16.99), the 2017 Fongoli Rossofongoli Umbria Rosso ($15.99) and the 2016 Fongoli Montefalco Rosso ($17.99).

Masseria Li Veli Verdeca & Passamante — an Afternoon in Apulia

2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca

Italy always seems to offer something out of the ordinary and this week our feature wines takes us to Apulia. For those of you unfamiliar with Italian geography, this region is also known as "the heal of the boot" located in the southern part of the country.

Please join us this Saturday February 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99).

Masseria Li Veli is located on an ancient Messapian site in the fertile and sunny Salento plain. Founded by Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco (1858-1943), it is now owned by the Falvo family. With over 40 years in the wine business, in 1999 they purchased and renovated the property and helped reinvigorate the long vine-growing tradition in Apulia.

First we will treat you to the 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99). The fruity, mineral and mildly spicy aftertaste would be perfect if you were whipping up a dish of Cacio e Pepe or classic Pasta Carbonara recipe.

2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante

Next we have the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99) made from the Negroamaro grape. Located beside the vineyard is a forest and in times past, lovers would walk by this vineyard on their way to the forest looking for private time with their paramour. Soon it became known as the Forest of Lovers and took on the name of Passamante from the words "Pass" (to pass) and "Amante" (Lover). But the wine itself has the essence of young lovers in that the nose of this wine is lively and intense with scents full of ripe red fruits as well as hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. This enjoyable, medium-bodied wine has a long and full grip, as well as an acidic touch, giving it a delightfully fresh finish. This wine is an excellent complement to traditional Italian pasta dishes such as Pappardelle with Roasted Tomato Sauce, as well as a delightful pairing for a piece of aged cheese.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 23rd 1:00-5:00PM as we open the 2019 Masseria Li Veli Verdeca ($19.99) and the 2017 Masseria Li Veli Passamante ($14.99) and perhaps you too can enjoy a taste of an authentic Italian vineyard, rich in history, and glowing with beautiful flavor.

When Iris Eyes are Smiling — 2015 Iris Pinot Noir

Our feature wine this week is once again a Pinot Noir, but this time from Oregon. Pinot Noir is a finicky grape that grows differently in various climates, but has adapted very well to Oregon's Willamette Valley and this week's wine is from a small vineyard located in this region.

2018 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir

Please join us this Saturday February 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99).

If you travel to the southern part of the Willamette Valley, you will come up an unassuming gate which brings you down a long, winding country road thru beautiful and peaceful woods. Immediately upon leaving the woods you arrive at a breathtaking view of fifty acres of vines that stretch out before you and you have arrived at Iris Vineyards. Named for the wild Douglas Iris that bloom here in the spring, this south facing, bowl-shaped valley is surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Oregon Coast Mountain Range.

Owners Richard Boyles and Pamela Frye are proud to bring you the 2018 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99). They began planting their vineyard in 1996 and their first vintage was in 2001. Their 2015 vintage is crafted under the watchful eye of winemaker Aaron Lieberman who joined them in 2008 and he is now going on his tenth vintage at Iris. What first strikes you with the 2018 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99) is the bright ruby color as it hits the light as it leaves the bottle. The aromas of raspberry, plum and blackberry are released as you pour it into your glass. In the mouth you are treated to a deep, rich flavor and a long palate which is what makes this wine so versatile with a variety of foods.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 16th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2018 Iris Vinyards Pinot Noir ($18.99) and you can taste the fabulous effort from Iris Vineyards for yourself.

Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir — A taste of Mendocino

While there are many Pinot Noirs to choose from the trick is to find one that give you a true flavor of this prized grape. Jason and Molly Drew started out almost 20 years ago with one clear goal: to craft pinot noir that highlighted the traditional character of the varietal.

2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir

In 2004 they purchased a 26 acre apple orchard that was for sale in the Mendocino Ridge Appellation. While others saw a daunting task ahead them, Jason and Molly Drew only saw ancient oceanic soil, south facing slopes and a true coastal climate a mere 3 miles from the ocean. They planted their pinot noir vines and 10 years later they produced their first crop.

The 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) is known for the low yields and intense concentration that the grapes produce at this site just west of the Anderson Valley. We here on the east coast have been lucky enough to be treated to some mild temperatures, so while the snow has melted and the path to the grill is clear, why not find that perfectly marbled New York Strip and open up this prized bottle from the Drew Family?

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday, February 9th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2019 Drew Mid-Elevation Pinot Noir ($29.99) and you can taste the fabulous effort from the Drew Family for yourself.

Jordan & Caymus - Super Bowl Battle of the Cabs

2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon

Whether you are a Patriots fan or a Rams fan (or even a Commercial fan) Super Bowl Sunday holds something for everyone. But at Francos Wine Merchants, the battle won't be on the field this weekend; it will be in the glass! We will be pouring two of our best-selling Cabernets at our Weekly Wine Tasting and we invite you to come and root for your favorite one.

Please join us Saturday February 2nd, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) and the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99).

Hailing from Alexander Valley, the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) is a consistent favorite among cabernet drinkers. Every vintage of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon strives to achieve that perfect balance of fruit and tannins and the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99), under the watchful eye of Winemaker John Jordan and Rob Davis, is no exception. Upon uncorking the bottle you are met with powerful aromas of cassis and black currants, as well as an intense fragrance of blackberries. Pour it in your glass and beautiful floral notes rise up to greet your olfactory senses and entice you even more. Your first sip reveals a mouthful of ripe cherry flavor surrounded by a solid core that is unmistakably Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich and seductive flavors are carefully entwined with the fine tannins imparted by the aging in new French oak barrels.

2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

From there if you travel south towards Napa Valley, you will find the home of the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99). This latest offering from Napa winemaking legend Chuck Wagner is a welcome sight whether you are a wine collector or simply a lover of full-bodied California Cabernets. Following in the footsteps of preceding vintages, this wine with its lush, rich flavors of dark Napa fruit all centered around a full-bodied core never disappoints those who love what Napa is all about. Winemaker Chuck Wagner practices a technique called "hang time" where he lets the fruit "hang" on the vine unusually long to develop the suppleness and mature tannins for which Caymus is known. The result of this is a wine with dense opaque purple color and stunning rich flavors of blackberry and cassis.

So for those of you straying from typical Super Bowl Sunday fare and maybe opting for grilling a New York Strip or well-marbled Rib-eye instead, either one of these two California favorites will be the wine to match.

Saturday Wine Tasting: So please join us on Saturday, February 2nd, 1:00-5:00PM as we pour both the 2015 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon ($58.99) and the 2016 Caymus Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.99), and you can decide for yourself which one will take home the trophy.

Saturday is also a great day to stop in for your other Super Bowl supplies, whether you need some Bourbon and/or Rye because you are mixing up some pre-game Manhattans (all on our Small Batch American Whiskey link), or maybe you need some Tequila because tacos and guacamole are on the menu. But it may be that all you need is some beer for your secret chili recipe, but whatever it is, Francos will be here to help. We will be open our regular hours on Sunday, Noon-5:00PM, for those of you who need any last minute supplies.

Join the Culture of Cool with the Wines of Jean‑Paul Brun

2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay

One of the most astonishing conundrums seems to me to be people who go out of their way to go to a market where the produce is known to be local and/or fresh, who examine to see where their beef or chicken originate from, or read up on how the hens are housed with the eggs they buy, yet they do not go to the same length of inquiry with their wine. The wines of Jean-Paul Brun hail from a 40 acre family estate just north of Lyon where you will find winemaker Jean-Paul Brun toiling away on his properties in a very "hands on" process where he creates some of the most fabulous wines in the region.

We've often talked of the wines of Jean-Paul Brun and this weekend we will be pouring two of them at our Weekly Wine Tasting on Saturday, January 26th 1:00-5:00PM. Jean-Paul Brun is a master craftsman who focuses on making classically styled wines in a natural fashion with no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and also no additives applied in the winery. All this effort brings forth a wine that is both the best of terroir as well as the varietal.

Easy to drink as well as being easy on the wallet, this wine is a perfect pairing for everything from a Roast Chicken with a simple Lemon/Butter/Thyme marinade to an easy mid-week meal of Chicken Thighs baked on a simple mirepoix bed and drizzled with a flavor infused olive oil.

2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorees Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Next we move over to the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99). A spine of juicy acidity runs straight thru the wine and lifts the fruit flavors thru a long, seamless finish. If it is too cold for some of you to make your way out to the grill, may I suggest you dig out you trusty cast iron pan and cook up a butter-basted pan seared T-bone or Ribeye and pull the cork on this wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Please join us on Saturday January 26th 1:00-5:00PM as we open both the 2018 Jean Paul Brun Chardonnay ($16.99) and the 2017 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées Bourgogne Pinot Noir ($21.99).

Heat up this Snowy Weekend with 2016 The Arsonist

2017 The Arsonist Red Blend

For those of us on the East Coast it looks like we are in for some snow in the coming days. So it's a good weekend to settle into some of the playoff football games and dig out a few comfort food recipes. What you will also need is a fabulous wine to pair and Francos Wine Merchants has one that is perfect.

Stop in this Saturday January 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we pour the 2017 The Arsonist Red Blend ($19.99) — a terrific blend from California.

Taking a break from straight varietal wines such as Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Malbec, 2017 The Arsonist Red Blend ($19.99) is a terrific option for those of you who prefer a Meritage or Bordeaux style blend. The Arsonist Red Blend is from the Matchbook Wine Company, a family-owned winery in the Dunnigan Hills region in Northern California. The Giguiere family came from Quebec City to Yolo County in the 1850s in search of land and open ground. Five generations later John and Karl Giguiere have a very intimate knowledge of the region's soil and climate. The Arsonist Red is a blend of primarily Petit Verdot (53%) with the balance comprised of Malbec (28%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (19%). Dark ruby red in the glass, the aromas of violets, blackberry and caramel rise up and mingle with the wines nuance of toasty oak and vanilla notes. Opulent and lush in the mouth, the flavors of dried blueberries and juicy plum tantalize the taste buds and then transition seamlessly into a lengthy finish. This full-bodied wine will have no problem standing up to a pan-seared Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon or a Peppercorn-crusted New York Strip Steak. But if it's a lazy Sunday afternoon and you have the time to braise some Short Ribs in tomato, this wine would shine beautifully.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Don't just dream about how nice this wine may taste, stop in on Saturday January 19th 1:00-5:00PM as we taste the 2017 The Arsonist Red Blend ($19.99) and see for yourself what a beautifully styled wine this is and think about some terrific food pairings.
