The Beaune Clos des Mouches vineyards are interesting among its Burgundy counterparts. One half of the land is used for Chardonnay, and exactly the other half is used for Pinot Noir. The Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir Premier Cru from vines as old as 39 years and that has been aged in 20% new oak barrels anywhere from 14 to 18 months. Exceptional and beautiful, the nose is intense, fresh, and aromatic, with aromas of red fruit dominating...Morello cherry (also known as griotte or wild cherry), raspberry, and blackberry, to be precise. Smokiness and licorice permeate the wine, as well as pepper, tobacco, hummus, and undergrowth. The palate has a fleshy, velvety texture, with a firm, well-meshed body that isn't rough or heavy. It is round and fresh with silky tannins.
