Traveling due south from Dijon you come to the region of Morgon which is home to the Gamay grape. Here in 1973 Marcel Lapierre took over his family estate and almost immediately Marcel took up in the “natural wine” movement Marcel Lapierre Morgon. Decomposed granite comprises most of the eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style. Shortly after the 2010 vintage, Marcel passed away and the estate was passed down to his son. Mathieu Lapierre was already schooled in his father’s winemaking practices and he immediately took up where his father Marcel left off to ensure that his father legacy lived on. The result of all this is a wine that has a vibrant bouquet with perfumed dark cherries and red currant. On the palate, this wine made from 100% Gamay is nicely structured, yet not a hard edge can be found anywhere from its lively start to its subtle finish.
